Let down? or much potential?

Halo: Reach is going to be the final instalment( at least that's what has been said) that Bungie will contribute to a game series they started way back when. Then 343 industries will take over(basically Bungie's fill in at Microsoft)

So, my question: waht are you thoughts on the Game since it's beginnings and do you think Halo : Reach is worth it? And when 343 industries does take over, will Halo be ruined? or has the series gone to far already?

Basically this is an opinion thread. SO let's get this party started!

An overrated, overhyped game series at best, should have been originally for the PC.

Halo 1 was good. Solid Console FPS in an age of dodgey console FPS's. Saved the Xbox a treat, though whether thats a good thing or not is debatable. I'd go as far to call it the Half-life 1 of the console, if Goldeye hadn't of existed (And goldeneye was superior in every respect)

Halo 2 sucked. Too ambitious. Arbiter was a gimp. Also too contrived. Though it made a few improvements here and there on the first, but it still couldn't compete.

Halo 3 was good. Better storyline with better pacing. Looked good, felt good. Coming off the back off a 'meh' sequel probably didnt hurt it either. Dropped the two angle story and stuck with the chief and all his doom-marine glory.

Halo wars sucked. Face it. All console RTS's fail.

Halo: ODST was just halo 3 from what I heard. I'd never played it, looked alright. I liked the idea, at least.

Reach feels like one of those contractually obligated games. It'll probably meet expectations, maybe, but for me the Halo series ended with 3. Everything else is just, as they say where I'm from, F**king a dead horse.

Which... isn't a surprise given the raging hard-on that the industry has for churing out sequels instead of taking risks on new ideas. But, you take what you can get I suppose.

Probably look at moving on after reach. When the original creators decide to call it quits, its best you do too.

Halo was one of the best game series I have ever played. I was a teenager when Halo 1 came out, so it was all the hype. Halo 1 was the best that the XBOX had to offer when it came out, if I remember correctly it was the game of the year. All of the original maps... Sidewinder, Blood Gulch - Those were the days.

Halo 2, in my opinion, was the best game in the series. I played the campaign over and over and over and over. I love the story line, as well as each seperate character within. Multiplayer, I played online for like 3 years. I slayed. TEAM SWAT, Snipers, you name it, I played it.

Halo 3, not so much. Everything became a bit too advanced in my eyes, but thats just me. The campaign was a good play, though, but multiplayer just seemed like a big mess.

Halo Wars - sucked.

ODST - Very good game play. It gave the series that "realism" that was never there. No shields, and most of the time you were on your own and not working with a team. Fire Fight was an awesome game play type - pretty much the same as Horde on Gears of War 2.

I realize that Bungie has milked the hell out of the Halo project itself, but it's all worth it. I do agree that this should be the last game, and that they should just shut it down for all it's worth. You can only do so much.

I agree to some degree with you Jaden.

Though, I found Halo 3 to be alot more simple than Halo 2(that could be the fact I played all three on 360.)

Halo 2 was enjoyable cause you go to play both sides of the story, saw through the eyes( or somewhat) of the covenant as well as keep with the Chiefs story.

Yes, i also think they should shut it down, because after what happened with Halo Wars, I think Microsoft will plainly make them for the profits(and we all know microsoft does that already) and I have a feeling that Halo will turn into another Movie game, basically thrown out cause they know it will sell.

Halo is the Star Wars if you will, of the Video Game industry; at least at this point and time.

Don't be surprised if the stories about the Halo movie is true... it's gonna happen. Just look at Prince of Persia( although that's a whole different discussion)

Halo: Reach I think will be the climax. I mean from what I've seen they've pulled out all the stops, and have created a game that might finally beat out CoD for years to come.

I'm just going to start off with this... : Halo Wars wasn't made by Bungie... So whether it sucked or not (I enjoyed it at least) should directed to the now non-existent Ensemble Studios.

Anyways, Halo: CE (the first one) Was the best. It was the original, and always will be the best, in my eyes. The original Star Wars movie is my favourite, so on, so forth.

Halo 2 was half a game, the result of Microsoft pushing Bungie for a release.

Halo 3, while Bungie did an excellent job on it, (the campaign portion... not a huge fan of the multiplayer), it seemed too much like a recycled Halo 1 (story-wise).

Halo Wars I went over... so;

Halo: ODST was awesome. It mixed the thrill and intensity, (not to mention the partially risky take on the Halo series), of Halo: CE, with the pacing and quality, (engine-wise, graphics, gameplay, etc.), of Halo 3.

From what I've seen of Halo: Reach, it seemed like an attempt to almost simplify Halo gameplay, by putting an interesting twist on it. While fun, it did seem to bore quickly, and the party that I was at, instead of playing the beta, ended up playing a large tournament of Starcraft, which came out more then ten years ago (I think).

Also, Bungie has announced that they will be moving on to other projects that they've had on hold for some time now. I personally am more exited for these other projects, then Reach... that's just me.

PS. Microsoft only prefers sequels because they know they can make money off them. You can't really blame them though; for example, Gears of War 2 is an awesome game (I like more them Halo 2, and 3 combined...)

Antways, my 2.5 cents.

I believe that all the halo games have been good.  I started out playing the first one on the computer which was great. Now i play the other four on the 360.  I honestly think that they were all good.

Halo 2 was sick because, as RK said, it was both sides of the story.

One was awesome cause it was the best first person shooter out then and that was cool.  It had great multiplayer.

I'm going to have to disagree with you about Halo Three though Stewart-Power.  I think that the multiplayer on Halo three is the best.  Even if it is exactly like the first one the enhanced graphics and new weapons make the storyline and the xbox live play even better.

Unfortunately, while I've never played the actual games, I have played a few demos. I know that demos aren't an accurate representation of the overall game, but they were good from what little I played of them. But while I haven't played any, I can still have an opinion on the overall series and . . .
Jager wrote:F**king a dead horse.

. . . is probably the most accurate representation of my views on the subject. The series was basically over with Halo 3 because, in my opinion, all they did was edit a few things in ODST, slap a new look on it and ship it out.

Halo: ODST, seemed, to me, a worthwhile use of the Halo franchise... At leas that's what I think.

I regretted ever buying ODST. The whole point, and it's mentioned several times in millions of press releases, was emphasising that you were not an all powerful spartan, you couldn't run off on your own killing everything and you HAD to work as a team to have any chance of survival. So why is the main bulk of the game played on your own, with the occasional support character? I was promised squad based gameplay which added a little more realism than was in Halo 3. It was a complete and utter lie.

And playing as an ODST was no different than as to playing a spartan. I still found the best technique in most situations was to charge and melee the hell out of anything in your way. You're supposed to be little more than a highly trained soldier, a punch would be ineffective as hell against a heavily armoured alien that's twice as big as you. It was also funny you were strong enough to rip turrets from their foundations, but not hold two pistols at once.

Reach, I have my fingers crossed will be pretty good. The multiplayer beta was impressive even though I didn't play it as much as I would of liked. Although ODST has destroyed any idea in my mind of Bungie actually understanding what 'realistic' gameplay is like. If it's another arcade shooter I'm officially calling anything with a Halo name on it quits.

Meh, I never really liked Halo. But it could be because of several factors. The first being that I am a hater of the XBox systems. I'm not trying to turn this into a which is better argument, but I've always believed that the PS3 exclusives are better. Another factor could be that I didn't like the overhype. And usually when a game is overhyped it instantly becomes a bane to my existence. Now I'm not saying that some games deserve some overhype, but Halo just seemed way beyond that level.

And the third factor is sequels. The Halo series has been pumping out sequels every year to two years. The fact that the series has so many tells me that people are way too into the series. And the fact that it takes a year or two for them to release indicates to me that Bungie is just copying-pasting-and doing a spit job on the first game to create their sequels. "So yeah, the level looks the same, but the walls are a different color." Yeah, that's a good job.

I guess you don't play them much, Skarr. The only levels they've ever copied are the top couple of multiplayer maps and that by popular demand. In fact, if you compare Halo 3 to Halo 1, for example, the environments are nothing alike. The controls have actually changed a good bit since the first game, too- more so than most series' controls do. While not everything's unique to each installment -which I challenge anyone to point out a chronologically-based series in which everything is- there's plenty to differentiate each game from the ones before.

In short, don't judge a book by its cover- or its hype. Halo, the first one at least, really raised the bar on FPS games during a time when there weren't many good ones. No matter what you prefer to play today, you've got Halo among some others to thank for it being as good as it is.

Yeah, I get what you guys are saying. I just think it's my frustration with sequels and FPS's in general that leaked into this argument. I just think Bungie should've stopped at the first Halo.
