First off, Windows Defender is free.
What you should do is get either Malwarebytes or Spybot Search and Destroy and install.
After that is installed do the following.
Open up the run prompt. Start > run...
Type in: msconfig
Click the boot tab at the top, near the middle of that window you should see a heading "Boot Options" and just under that label a check box that says "Safe Boot." Check that hit apply then ok.
You will be asked to restart your computer. Do so.
This will put you into safe mode. When you are back into the system. Run the program you chose earlier. Scan and fix problems. Assuming you don't have a something as evil as a kernel-level rootkit this should fix you right up.

Yeah, I got something like that a while ago. Basically, windows defender, the one you think you're buying is probably the virus. I got it where it would helpfully tell me I had between 50 and 200 viruses, then offer me a £50 version of windows defender. I twigged because a) my virus count went down anyway and b ) because the whole window is a link, including the areas that shouldn't be.

In my opinion, the computers themselves aren't that bad, and that's not just because my dad works there. Its mostly just all the HP update, HP advisor/ ect apps that give them such a bad rep. Anyway, I screwed up my PC really bad a while ago. Really bad rootkit virus that disabled half of windows, including Internet Explorer and Task Manager. After spending a bit of cash of anti-virus software that didn't help at all, I finally found the freeware ComboFix. I'm not trying to advertise it or anything, just honestly it was the only thing that worked. One hour of working, and the computer was completely clean. Bit hard to find a download for it, but definitely worth it.
