Story 1: Basic Electronics/Wiring

Zaric awoke in cold sweat on his first day in the Academy and glanced over at his clock. The clock defiantly displayed the time as 2:38 AM rather than 6:30 AM, the time he had to be up to make it to his class. He sat straight up with no light present but the red glow of the clock and a few lights from the hallway that dimly snuck into his room from dirty window that sat in the upper center of his room’s door.

Another nightmare about Rakgouls Zaric thought dejectedly. He had been having nightmares about these monsters of Taris’ past ever since he was small and heard tales of them from the many homeless that he happened upon over the years. Tales of how vicious they were and of their mutagenic properties that turned whoever was bitten by one into one of them was enough to frighten him even up to now. Nevertheless he fell back into his standard issue bed and double checked his clock’s alarm so he wouldn’t be late and fell back into a light slumber.

Zaric’s alarm sounded off in the annoying beeping that comes preset with most clocks signaling it was 6:30 AM and time to officially start the day. Reaching over, still half asleep, he hit the ‘off’ button on the clock, got up, got dressed in his standard issue uniform, and made his way to the mess hall for breakfast.

After a less than filling breakfast Zaric returned to his room to check his time and to get his datapad and other supplies for his class. After getting everything packed into his pack he looked back over at the clock which displayed 6:40 AM which gave him plenty of time to make it to his classroom. Before heading back out into the plain, durasteel colored halls he checked his datapad to make sure he knew which class he was headed to. “Class 124A-Combat Engineer Course 1-Electrical Systems” the datapad displayed once again as it had for the past few days when Zaric had check. After tucking his datapad into his pack he headed out into the halls and to the classroom.

When he arrived at his destination few other cadets were present as well as the teacher, who, from Zaric’s estimates, was a six and a half foot tall Trandoshan. Zaric took a seat at a table near the front, hooked his datapad up to it, and began to study up on what he could before the class actually started.

As time continued to pass few cadets actually entered the room and when 7:00 came by only around 16 cadets were present in the room. Zaric suspected that Combat Engineers weren’t exactly the most sought after choice in the Empire.

The Trandoshan teacher stood and cleared his throat and spoke with a slight hiss in his voice. ”Welcome cadetsss to Course 1-Electrical Systemsss. I am your instructor, Drakrukk Felnorr. Today we are covering Basic Electronicsss and Wiring. Now if you would all hook your datapadsss up to the table we can begin.”

Drakrukk explained many of the basic layouts of most circuits and how the wiring affects each part of the circuits. He then began pulling up diagram holograms of several simple droids and of older models of speeder bikes and began explaining the basics of how to troubleshoot on wiring of each to get it fixed in a certain situation as well as going through each circuit in it to familiarize the cadets with basic electronics.

After what seemed to be hours to both Drakrukk and the cadets examining the holograms, a droid entered through the door with several parts as well as tools on a tray atop its head. Drakrukk promptly shut the holograms down and turned his attention to the droid. He pointed to each table and the droid followed depositing a part and kit at each of the tables before leaving the room as quietly as it had entered.

“Alright cadetsss,” Drakrukk said from the front of the class, “This is your first test. These partsss need to be fixed and if you had been paying attention.” Drakrukk then eyed several cadets who he spotted chatting or attending other matters. He then resumed, “Thisss test ought to be simple for you. Begin.”

Zaric opened his kit and began to open the front plate of his part. He examined it further after he got the frontal plating off and concluded it was from an old speeder model. Following each wire he determined which went to power and which were control systems. After correcting the power problem he fine tuned the control wires and activated it. The machine beeped and green lights sprung to life on the top, Zaric had fixed it.

Several minutes later many beeps and green lights went off in the class with only a few cadets unable to fix their parts. Drakrukk once again took his place at the front of the class and congratulated the cadets who had completed their tests in a timely manner while rebuking those who had yet to finish. Once he had finished Drakrukk dismissed the class and each cadet went back to their rooms free for the rest of the day.
