Level 1, story 1: First aid
Akilaa smiled to herself sweetly, taking out her first aid box. She had been up and revising for a good few hours now and the effects were beginning to show. Her eyes were beginning to become heavy but she knew she couldn’t let herself fall asleep. Not now. She gently flicked up the catches on the box to open the lid, followed by her tipping the contents on the floor.
“Right, let me see now” she whispered in hope not to wake the other people she was sharing the barracks with.
“6 medium dressings… Check. 2 large dressings, check. 2 extra large dressings… Check” she thought to herself. She placed them neatly back into the box before continuing her checklist.
“4 alcohol-free cleansing wipes, disposable gloves, safety pins, plasters and bandages, a resuscitation face shield, scissors, tweezers, thermometer” she paused for some breath, thinking it was an awful long list, but there was still some items she needed to pack.
“Sterilised pads, crepe bandages, and finally adhesive micro tape. All checked, packed and in order” she sighed a sigh of relief before closing the catches and putting it under her bunk.
She sleepily dragged herself into a laying position, lightly propped up by pillows, and dragged her mass of text books onto her stomach. She dreaded tests, she thought they were pointless. Surely it was all about performance and not how well you test. Her eyes strained and focused on an example question: “What are the ABC’s in first aid and can you explain how to check them?”
“Right, A is airway, B is breathing and C is… Circlu…ation…”

The suns rays shone through a crack in the curtains, brightly reflecting into Akilaa’s eyes. She sleepily awoke with a stretch, causing the books that were resting on her stomach to crash on the floor. She glanced lazily at the clock, 8:48am. Class started at 9:30am so she was okay for time, but couldn’t revise anymore. She hopped into her shower, changed and grabbed her things. She was still new to the place so she stopped and asked for directions a few times before finally reaching the exam room, but it wasn’t what she had expected at all.
“Miss Akilaa Roellun I presume?” A tall, young man spoke out, turning round to finally face her.
“Y-yes, that’s me. Where are the desks and other people?” She questioned, taking a look around the strange room and machines.
“We do things… a little different here. You’ll be asked to step in here in a moment to do your exam. I presume that you’ve brought your first aid kit as asked in the message we sent you via comlink.”
Akilaa nodded firmly before being ushered into a small room to the left of where they were standing. The examiner stood on the other side of the glass sticking his thumbs up in hope of on in return from her. As soon as she returned the thumbs up, she found herself in the middle of a battle field. Luckily they had put her in some sort of armour first, otherwise she’d have been a casualty herself. She took a few moments to get her bearings and look at the situation. It wasn’t too long before she noticed someone bleeding from the upper arm.
“Hello? Can you tell me your name please? I’m Akilaa Roellun and I’m going to help you” she shouted over the noise.
“I-I’m Ray, I seem to have hurt my arm but I’m too scared to look. Please help me, I’m in terrible pain” he replied.
Akilaa nodded, reaching for her first aid kit and flipping it open. She knew she had to locate the bleeding and stop it effectively. She managed to find a large piece of wood sticking out from his arm. She winced at his pain, knowing that must have hurt a lot.
“I hope you’re not allergic to anything. I’m just going to talk you through what I do so nothing comes as a surprise okay?” She shouted, reaching for a pair of gloves and frantically trying to find a cloth. After no hope of finding some, she ripped off a piece of her trousers.
“Right, I’m going to minimise the bleeding now. Then I’m going to raise your arm. You hopefully won’t feel anymore discomfort than you are already in” she sympathised.
Akilaa got the torn bit of trouser leg and gently put it around the wooden piece, letting it soak up some of the blood, she then placed her hands either side of the wood and pressed against it, causing the blood flow to stop. Softly holding his arm, she raised it above his heart, promoting the blood flow to get to the brain. This would stop the man from feeling dizzy and sick.
“That’s me done. I’ve called for someone to get you. They will be here shortly.”
Amongst the people arguing afar, someone lay in the middle what looked like to be unconscious. Akilaa rushed over, shoulder barging the arguing people out of the way.
“I’m Akilaa, can you hear me?”
There was no response. She reacted quickly, thinking back to her text book. She checked the person’s airway by tipping the persons chin up, preventing the tongue to block the airway. She then checked for breathing by placing her head close to their chest, focusing on the smallest of breaths. There was nothing, so she began mouth to mouth resuscitation. She pinched his nose and made sure no air was lost between her lips and the casualties. Luckily there was a little response within the first few minutes, but it was then lost moments after. Checking for circulation was next, even though Akilaa had fallen asleep on this topic last night it was lucky she could remember it. She pressed against the person’s Adams apple with two fingers then slid them to side of the neck to check for a pulse. There was nothing, she quickly resorted to chest compressions. Where the casualties ribs met the breast bone she laid her hand flat, locking her other hand with the other she made her arms straight. She took a deep breath and began pressing firmly about 4-5cm. She did this for some time, only to get no response.
Akilaa sat back knowing there wasn’t much more she could do. She then found herself back in the glass room and being let out by the young man.
“You did well Miss. It’s not easy losing your first casualty, but I think you handled it pretty well. I have a few more questions to ask you for the theory part of the exam, then I can let you go” he nodded, flipping over the piece of paper from his clip board.
“What are the 3 P’s of first aid?”
She thought for a moment, pressing her hand against her forehead trying to think back and not let the situation get the better of her.
“Preserve life by making sure everyone survives; prevent further injuries by making sure those whose injuries could worsen get treated first, and promote recovery by making sure I do all I can to stop bleedings and pain if possible”
“Thank you, next and last question is explain to me the recovery position”
“This is the best position for an unconscious person or someone having a fit. It allows them to breathe easily and prevents them from choking. After checking the ABC, bend the nearest arm to you, putting the hand by the head. Then bring the far arm across the chest and hold both hands in one of yours. With your other hand pull the furthest leg up at the knee and roll the person towards you to lie in this position.” She sighed a sigh of relief. That was her best question to be asked.
“That will be all. I’ll keep you posted” he nodded with a smile, showing her out of the door.
