Heavy Weapons Specialist
Level 1: Cover tactics
Level 2: Indirect fire operations
Heh, I almost forgot about my spec. Been so long since I last took a course, almost a year, just shows how hectic life is now. What am I even doing today? thought Jamasis. He came out to one of the outdoor firing ranges, greeted alone by Sergeant Major Syldren.
"Good you could spare the time to get on with your spec," said the Sergeant sarcastically. He was clearly irritated by having to come out on an early morning for a private session.
"Sorry about this. I had to do some more specialty training, and I don't get much time in Wraith anymore," replied Jamasis.
"Eh, I don't blame you. Proper soldiering gets hard when the high-ups want something doing. I'm pretty happy with my position actually. Not much chance of getting shot," the Sergeant clapped his hands together,” Are we getting on with this? Its cold and I don't want to be here to be honest."
"Yeah, sorry. What am I doing?"
"You are taking a basic course in artillery fire, hence the firing range. There's a fairly basic artillery piece behind me. It’s labelled; you should be able to figure it out. Targets will appear as soon as you fire, try and hit them. They'll appear at a fairly consistent rate. When you've got the hang of it, go down to the simulation room. You know where it is?"
"Yeah, in basic training we used it once or twice."
"Good. I'll meet you there."
Jamasis walked over to the artillery piece. Like the Sergeant had said, everything was labelled. It was an EAW-25/4 Chimera, according to the labels, and Jamasis crouched down behind the gun. It wouldn't be hard to figure out without the instructions. The gun itself swivelled, not just left to right, but also up and down to a certain extent. There were two triggers, one on the left span the gun upto speed and the right, Jamasis guessed, fired. There were some plain iron sights, but really the gun was pretty simple. The workings looked complicated, but the actually usage of the weapon couldn't have been simpler.
After making sure he could move, aim and spin up the gun easily, Jamasis tried the right trigger. Nothing happened. Puzzled, he tried again, holding the trigger down. The gun slowly span up, before a burst of blaster bolts erupted from the gun.
Oh yeah, you have to spin it up first, he thought. The first target had already appeared, and Jamasis lined the gun up and fired. The first target went down, another appeared, and Jamasis pulled the gun over to the second target and fired, but he had pulled the gun too far, past the target.
Aw crap, Jamasis moved the gun slowly back to the target. Then he pulled to the third target, taking care to not pull too far, but with the result he moved slowly. He hit it, but was unhappy.
Uh, this is surprisingly hard. If I move quickly I miss, if I don't miss I move too slowly. He spent at least thirty minutes simply aiming, firing and aiming again. The gun was fine to work; he could use it pretty quickly and easily by keeping the gun spinned up and pulling the gun to each target. The problem was the aiming. After about twenty minutes he could aim at each target fairly easily, with time. At thirty he was doing it at some speed. At forty he could move fairly quickly and hit all but the furthest targets with the first burst.
"Might as well finish then," he said to himself. Jamasis left the turret and came inside, walking down to the simulation room.
"Hey, 'bout time you learned to fire the turret," said Sergeant Major Syldren.
"Took a while to aim and move well."
"You feel okay with it?"
"I would rather have someone else fire it, but I could if I have too."
"Fair enough. You've got two levels to complete. Both are fairly basic, the first is just infantry, the second is total realism," the Sergeant smiled, "Nobody expects you to complete that one. All you have to do is make some sort of impact before you die. Ready?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, inside there's another Chimera, hooked up to the system. Basically you use it like you did outside, and everything will register on the system."
Jamasis entered the simulation room, and crouched down behind the artillery piece. Within seconds, the simulation flickered to life. A quick look around showed groups of enemy infantry advancing on a fortified VE position. Jamasis spun the turret up, before opening fire on various groups of advancing enemies. It was fairly simple; occasionally blaster bolts came fairly close but nothing too dangerous. About five minutes in the opposing forces had been all but wiped out, simply because they had no way to effectively counter the fire from the empire's position.
"Right, you've completed level 1. Level 2 features infantry, snipers, speeders, tanks, and occasional enemy bombers. It's unlikely, but you complete it through total annihilation of enemy forces, or twenty minutes of survival," said the Sergeant Major over the simulation system.
"Simulation starts... now!"The simulation flickered back too life. It was fairly overwhelming, a group of Y-Wings were coming in to bomb the imperial lines, and Jamasis opened fire, taking one of them down. Then he moved the turret down, fired on a group of infantry, scattering them. Then he moved onto an enemy speeder, followed by a second infantry group. Then he looked around for another target, even though, ironically, there were hundreds of enemy tanks, speeders and squads in front of him. Jamasis aimed down at a tank before the simulation blacked out.
Jamasis left the room, and walked over to the Sergeant. "Know what got you?" asked Syldren.
"No idea."
"Sniper. Snipers will target you on a turret. If you were going for a more advanced level with artillery that would count as a fail. But this is a basic course, and you managed to cause enough damage to the enemy. If you ever had to use a turret at this stage, it would be against a much smaller amount of enemy forces; that or you already know you're dead. Basically, you did well enough for this basic course."
"That all?"
"Next time, try and do your specialty training at the same time as everyone else. I really don't like private sessions; I prefer to lie in," the Sergeant grinned, and left.

- I like it Jamasis, next time spend more time on the actual practical portion where you were engaged in the test. I know how tempting it is to do tons of character development and spend your time there then when you need to pass the test you rush to the finish seeing the end in sight
Take your time, break up the writing so that you are writing one part one day and then wait till the next day for the next part. Keep it up. PASS
