== Character’s Background ==
Mal Calad was born poor, and lived poor his whole life. His familial background is limited. His parents, although loving and proud of his abilities, were unreliable, and Mal was left to fend for himself most of his life. This developed a loner personality in the boy, one that, when blended with his charisma, puts one off. At an early age, Calad took up a job in a repair shop to earn his own money so he could buy food and pay rent, the rent that his drunkard and occasionally spice-crazed parents could and would not pay. After a year of working in the shop, he was placed in the front because he could haggle better than any spacer and could see through deceit easily.
When Mal was 19, his mother had another child - a girl, Lena. However, the duties of motherhood eluded Ela Calad, and Mal was forced to take care of the girl and act as a surrogate parent. Mal was so fed up with his parents that he moved himself and Lena to Mos Entha, procuring more work as a salesman. However, Mal and Lena were forced to live on the outskirts of town - which were near a particularly active area for the Tusken Raiders.
The Raiders kidnapped Lena while Mal was coming home from work one afternoon.
He could see them (or at least he thought he could) in the distance, and he could not help but pursue them. He followed them for many miles, but upon approaching their camp, was shot in the neck, a wound whose scar he still bears. What chanced next saved Mal's life. Jawas, oddly enough, rescued him from the Tusken Raiders, and through a translator Protocol Droid, brought him back to Mos Entha where he could get proper medical care.
Mal notified the authorities of his home that his sister had been kidnapped, but they did little. He considered trying to buy help, but he would have virtually enslave himself to a small-time Hutt.
Consumed by grief, Calad deteriorated into what he disliked most of all: his parents. He drank away his earnings and almost lost his home. He neglected work and summarily lost his job. His life was a shambles, until a friend did what friends should do in that circumstance: he slapped Mal silly, and told him to clean up. He told Mal that he had potential to reach beyond the faraway stars, and that he should get off Tatooine and make something of himself.
For a poor young man, the military is sometimes the only way to leave a planet that holds many pains for you.
== Personality ==
Mal is quiet and reserved. A pessimist would say that he is terse with his words, but Mal does not say more than needs to be said. Oftentimes, people think he is mute because he can convey emotion with gestures and facial expressions better than most people can do with words. Mal is shrewd when it comes to people, and is wary to trust them too quickly. This being said, Mal is incredibly compassionate and giving, and works tirelessly to make others' lives better than his has been.
