The Pilot

Tactical Training Assignment: Cali'reharn

As asked I have prepared a report on the definition and usage of two tactical maneuvers. I shall be looking at Low Speed Yo-yo and Countering the Low Speed Yo Yo.

Low Speed Yo-yo:



The Yo-yo in both its high and low form is a maneuver which allows the attacker to exchange speed for a better position for attack in regards to the defender. It is also useful for avoiding the overshooting of a target.
Having piloted a Xg-1 Star Wing in the past I rarely found I risked the possibility of overshooting the target,  given the gunboat's inferior speed in space superiority. In an environment with an atmosphere and having a higher speed of 1,050km, however, I found it useful on several occasion to implement the Low Speed Yo-yo. By sending my gunboat into a tight dive the craft's speed would decrease but I would be within a closer range of my target once I had brought my craft back up onto a similar altitude to my enemy. This increased the enemy's surface area thus allowing me to have a wider weapon envelope with which to get a lock on.


Countering Low Speed Yo-yo:



The countering of the low speed yo-yo is itself a valuable maneuver to have within any pilot's repertoire. As a defensive maneuver this allows the defending craft to evade the attacking craft's attempt to close the gap between them. The defending craft, in order to correctly execute the maneuver, has to dive during the middle of turn and break towards the attacker thereby meeting them on their altitude.
Admittedly due to the speed of Star Wing I have often found myself required to counter the low yo-yo as faster craft are only to willing to get close and personal.
I am optimistic, however, that in faster more maneuverable fighters such as the Interceptor it would be possible to turn such a defensive counter into an attacking advantage given the turning circle was tight and sufficient enough. This is something I look to put to task once I am within the cockpit of such a machine.

Cali'reharn's Report: April 08th 2009

Activity: This week I have enrolled into the Imperial Navy's Flight School and am currently undergoing training for the Aviator's Exam. I posted my biographical information as well as researching the basics of piloting.

Upcoming plans: I hope to soon sit my Aviator's Exam and with some luck pass and be assigned to a squadron and get to grips with Navy life. Is currently reading Adar Tallon's Treatise on Starfighter Tactics for study.
