Reason for joining the Empire: Way to spite rich sexist mother and shoot stuff.

History: Varnetta’s father kissed the top of her head, saying his goodbyes and leaving the 17 year-old at her mother’s doorstep. She glared at her mother’s home as if it would help her get back to her beloved father, she hated staying with her mother and she hated that the old-bag had left her father 2 years earlier and yet he’d given her half of all he owned. The old guy had really loved her.

--------------

Varnetta held the knife to the long dark-brown plait her hair was pulled into and listened to her mother warbling on about how the army is for men and women should be concentrating on marrying well and looking pretty. Cutting the plait off below her ears she threw the knife at the table beside her and it stuck a few centimeters into it and made a poing noise. She tossed the plait at her mother and left for her room to pack. She was leaving and she was never coming back.

---------------

15 months later: some planet. “I’m sorry, but if you can’t pay …” Was the line that Varnetta was hearing everywhere she went on this strange new planet. She was alone and starting to regret the decision to never use her parents’ wealth again. She crouched by the corner of a market stall and began drawing in the dirt. She wanted at least some credits before she joined the army; just how she’d get them she was unsure. “Varny?” A familiar voice said, causing Varnetta to stand from her crouched-in-the-corner position. It was her beloved father. She looked up at into his blue-grey eyes, the same as hers and wished for a moment that she’d gotten his height as well as his eyes. At a measly 168cm by age 18, she was at least a head below the other humans. She jumped into her fathers arms and told him everything, the argument with her mother, the cutting off of her hair, the hitchhiking, the scabby jobs for measly pay and her plans to join the STC. He smiled kindly when she was done, commented on her new short straight hair, gave her credits (even after she refused a million times) and left. She knew that things would look up for her from then on.

-----------------

Even though her father had given her credits, Varnetta found a decent paying job that didn’t require hugely long hours and going through hell every day to get the feel for supporting herself and living independently. A few weeks after she started working, she was sitting in the cantina, sipping away at a mildly alcoholic drink once the day’s work was done, when a man stomped in, gazed around the room and plunked himself down across the table from her. She really didn’t feel like talking to him, so Varnetta just tried to ignore him and looked into her drink, letting her hair cover her face. After a few minutes of silence, the man attempted to make conversation with Varnetta. “Uhm… Hello...What’s your name…?” –long silence- “I’m... uhm…. Jenthert…” he stuttered, looking at his feet. Varnetta mumbled her name and skulled the remainder of her drink, her grey-ish eyes peered at him for a split second through the mask of her hair. Jenthert wasn’t sure he’d heard her name right, so he just made a wild guess at it when he repeated, getting it completely wrong. “Well… Hello… uhm… Valmet…” he muttered, causing Varnetta to look up at him. “Valmet…” she repeated, almost at a whisper. “I like the sound of that…”

---------------

Varnetta warmly hugged Jenthert. He and his buddies had become close friends whom she would dearly miss while she was gone. “Have fun shooting stuff!” Jenthert shouted to her as she left for her training. ‘Valmet’ laughed, she would always introduce herself as Valmet now, it had become her new self, the independent, light-hearted self she’s always wanted to be. “I will!” she shouted in reply. She would see him again one day, but now she was off on a completely new adventure…. -----------
