Trevor was thankful Jeg showed up to chase the E-wing off him. He had picked it up shortly after killing the last X-wing and flying too close to a pair of E-wings who had ditched their final wingman. One of them turned and followed him while the other continued on after the Dragon Squadron fighters who were in the process of tying up the X-wings. Trevor had been jerking the fighter back and forth in an attempt to avoid the cannons of the E-wing, succeeding for the most part but his shields taking a few various hits.

Jeg showed up after chasing off the E-wing and the two pilots formed up. It was then that Trevor realized they were the only two from their flight left over, and two of five pilots still circulating within the battle. Their numbers had declined steadily and the odds were starting to look worse and worse with each pilot they lost. Sure, they might have been able to defeat the uncountable numbers of fighters that the sim initially threw at them, but even if they did so, they’d just get swarmed by more and more. The whole point of the simulation was to see how long they lasted.

“Jeg, if we’re going to last any bit longer out here, we’re going to need to find some way to ditch this battle and get farther away from these fighters. We need some sort of support ship to help us out.” Trevor said, hoping and praying that they’d be able to find an escape from the battle that assured all of their deaths.

Rogue was still hadn't found the other E-wing that took out Rutian. That guy was still out there. But in the mean time, he had managed to nail yet another Y-wing and he was now working on another X-wing. He had lost count of exactly how many kills he had, but it didn't matter. The waves of holographic Rebel fighters just didn't seem to end.

One series then another, and finally a third, and the X-wing's shields gave, and the engines detonating. Rogue rolled his fighter to avoid the explosion and debris cloud, then started looking for another target. But suddenly, he noticed something other than the swirl of a dogfight on the sensors. A large number of the Rebel fighters were starting to pull out of the fight.

And everyone was a Y-wing or B-wing. Bombers. That meant only one thing. Somewhere in this fight there was a VE cap ship left, and it was about to die.  So that meant there was only one thing for him to do. He slammed the yoke hard over, stomped on the rudder peddle and sent the Interceptor spinning after the bombers.

It was going to be a tail chase since the bombers had a head start. But there wasn't a Y-wing or B-wing ever built that could ever out run an Interceptor at max throttle. He again played with the power settings, sending extra power to the engines from the lasers and shields.  After that, according to the readout, his speed was up to 135 MGLT.  Only an A-wing doing the same power dumping would be able to catch him.

They had us numbered over 3 to 1. But they suddenly pulled out instead of finishing us. Only an AI would do. They have programed to kill all the cap ships first. Its the only thing that makes since.

While he raced after them, out running any one trying to pursue him, he used one hand to try and adjust the focus and gain on his sensors. He fiddle with the knobs, trying to adjust it to get a clear reading, but all he could get was blips. At least one ship with a VE transponder was still out there in the distance.

“Five to Squadron. The bombers are breaking off to go after a bigger target. And I'm reading one last VE ship out there. I'm already in pursuit. But you guys might want to come along too.” Rogue sent over the radio.

Castor pulled his TIE into a tight spin, targeting an E-Wing with his cannons; this was his prize. He opened up with his cannons, blasting the shields away. Castor smiled as pale blue light shimmered where he made contact. The E-Wing juked left and right, looking for a passage with which to use as an escape. Castor wasn’t about to give it that chance; he had come too far to let a New Republic pilot spoil everything for him. Lances of green hit the hull of the E-Wing, sending off chunks of scorched metal and debris in all directions. Castor hit the left wing of the E-Wing, sending it into a spiral. Castor unleashed the final salvo, blasting the E-Wing into tiny bits. Castor turned back towards the group of TIE fighters. Polar squadron was gone; Both Nazgul and Dragon had taken some losses, Nazgul more than Dragon.

Castor’s TIE had taken some heavy damage over the course of the mission. There were carbon-scoring marks all along its hull. Castor looked at his radar: there were still quite a number of New Republic fighters, waiting for Castor to pick them off. And the threat of the Nebula-B Frigate loomed off in the distance. The last thing Castor wanted was to take on the frigate in combat.

Castor rolled to avoid a barrage of blaster fire from a surviving B-Wing fighter. Castor turned and got a bead on the slow bomber, priming his cannons for a devastating volley. The B-Wing opened fire, its triple cannons blistering the edges of Castor’s shields. Castor went into a spin, unleashing hail of laser cannon bolts, hitting the fighter right in its power generator. The shields wouldn’t hold, and the B-Wing splintered into fiery pieces across the skies. He checked his radar one more time and saw all of the blips. Castor sighed. Still so much work to do.

Trevor picked up on Rogue’s message and checked his radar. Sure enough, there was a storm of red dots leaving the dogfight, headed off in a direction towards something Trevor couldn’t quite tell. He checked his tail to make sure no one was following him then radioed Jeg.

“Let’s get out of here, we’re probably better off running for it and trying to save that VE ship. Might as well go down defending something instead of just randomly dog fighting.” Trevor said, dodging a pair of blasts from some of the still functioning guns on the Nebulon B.

Jeg nodded as he replied. “You bet. Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to get a hand from that ship too.” He said to Trevor as the two pilots turned their fighters away from the battle at hand to join up with the group of pilots who were heading after the B-wings and Y-wings. So far, Dragon squadron hadn’t joined up with them, and Trevor was about to request their assistance when he realized what they were doing. The AI squadron was programmed to provide a distraction, allowing Nazgul to escape without being noticed by the A-wings, X-wings and E-wings.

If they were real, I’d call them brave sons of bitches. Because they aren’t, I’m going to thank the programmers. Trevor thought to himself with a bit of a smirk on his face. He soon had caught up with Castor and Casca, but Rogue was leaving them in the distance. Good thing he caught this, we might have never found a way out of that mess. Trevor thought to himself. “Come on boys, let’s clean up these bombers.”

He had managed to close the range on the combined group of bombers. Now the Y-wings were the slower of the two types, but many of them seemed to be the two seat models with the turret and its twin light ion cannons under the control of a gunner in the backseat, instead of the more common single seat A4 model.  So with a gunner and turret, that made them more dangerous to attack from the rear. Now the B-wings only had forward facing weapons, but they had a lot more of them, and they could turn faster than a Y-wing.

The rest of the squadron, all four of them, were racing after him, but for the next several minutes it was just him and the bombers.  But he had to give up some of his speed in order to get enough power to fire his lasers.  And his shields were now down to squat as well. But he had to have laser power and speed. He would have to do without the shields for a bit.

He adjusted the power settings and sent power back to the lasers. His speed dropped, but the indicator for the lasers started glowing again. He hoped the AI would keep them heading to their target and not have any break off to engage him. That would only make him vulnerable to their turrets, and fancy flying would have to keep him out of their lines of fire. He cut the yoke over, and squeezed the trigger as the reticle came to bear.

A huge formation of Y-Wings and X-Wings cut in on Trevor, Casca, and Castor from the side as they attempted to catch up to Rogue. Lasers began to fly everywhere, and it was all they could do to avoid being torn to shreds. Castor winced as he watched his shields drop from green to yellow, and then from yellow to red.

"I'm taking serious fire over here, Nazgul One," he called out.

"I think we're all in a little trouble," came Trevor's reply. "Five, get your ass back here and give us some cover!"

"Be there as soon as I can," Rogue answered.

  "Two, where are you?"

"About a click behind you, One," came Jegora's response. "I got tangled up with some A-Wings, but we're on our way now."

  "We?" Casca asked.

"I've got most of Dragon Squadron with me. Just hang in there, everyone!"

Castor's spirits lifted slightly. Nazgul and Dragon Squadrons were heavily - heavily - outnumbered, but if they could all get together maybe there was some way they could win this thing. He didn't have much more time to think about what they could do to win, though, because he was having to give almost all of his focus to the task at hand - evading the X- and Y-Wings' laser fire.
And then, there they were. TIE Avengers streaked past him, their lasers firing. He couldn't help put grin as a pair of Y-Wings exploded in front of him.
He opened his mouth to congratulate the Dragon pilots, then thought better of it. Wouldn't do any good to congratulate a simulation, I guess...

"This is the opportunity we were waiting for," Trevor announced. "All Nazgul pilots, form up on me. We're gonna trail in behind Dragon Squadron and pick up their leftovers."

"Roger that, NazgulOne," Casca replied. "I'm -"

Nazgul Eight didn't get a chance to finish his sentence. Red lasers sliced his TIE Interceptor's right solar panel off, and his ship spun wildly out of control. A few seconds later a Republic X-Wing swooped in and finished off the job.

"Dammit!" Jegora swore out loud over the comm. "We just lost, Eight."

"I saw it, Two," Trevor replied. "Stick with the plan - everyone form up on me."

Castor frowned, but did as ordered. He wanted to go after the X-Wing and get revenge for Casca, but he knew obeying his squadron commander was more important. Hopefully one of them would be able to vape the bastard later on...

The tall officer with the dark aura on board the Atrus smiled slightly. Nazgul Squadron was down to only four pilots, which meant it was almost time for him to take a more ... active ... role in the training exercise.

He motioned the pretty young lieutenant over. "Lieutenant, I'm going to leave the bridge in your capable hands for a moment."

  "Sir?" she asked, obviously surprised.

"I'm sure you'll keep everything under control."

"But ... but where are you going?"

"Why, the same place as the Admiral did. I'm going to take place in the simulation."

She nodded, regaining her composure. "Yes, sir. It's an honor."

"Be back shortly." He gave her what he hoped was a reassuring smile and headed for the simulators. She seemed slightly unnerved by the whole thing, and he was not surprised. Years ago, he might have been considered charming, dashing, handsome - and more. But time ... and certain events ... had changed all that. Putting those thoughts aside, he began to focus on the task at hand.

Nazguls, I'm coming for you. Hope you're ready.

The Y-wings' turrets had started to have an effect. Some had the light ion guns replaced with lasers. So Rogue had been forced to divert power from the engines to the shields.  He had managed to nail two of the Y-wings before the rest of the squadron caught up. So far none of the Rebel escort fighters had even come after his fellow Nazguls. They had stayed engaged with the remains of Dragon Squadron.  That was a break for them.

Now they just had to take out these bombers before they reached whatever it was that was their target. So far, his sensors still had yet to give him a clear determination of what their target was. Whatever type of ship it was, it was now showing as three ships. His job was to stop the bombers, but his mind wanted to know what kind of ships those were. And with the jamming going on, the only way to find out was to dump all power to the engines and get out in front of the Rebels.

Guess I could risk it. Be worth it to find out what we are racing towards. The rest of the guys can handle these...

He snapped the Interceptor around again and once more threw all power to the engines. He raced right by a Y-wing, moving too fast for its turret to track. A quick and lucky pilot might be able to tag him with a missile lock, but he would be out of range fast. But the AI's weren't smart or fast enough, and let out a sigh of relief as he hit the one kilometer mark. Whoever these ships were they were certainly a good ways out.

Suddenly, another group of Y-wings and X-wings appeared cutting in on the others. He could hear Trevor ordering him to get back to the others, but he was already so far out. He transmitted that he was coming, but he didn't alter course. Then he heard Dragon Squadron was following Jeg. They were a lot closer and would be a lot more help than he would.  He could best help the squadron by getting to those ships.

Trevor threw his shielding to the side that the new attack was coming from, hoping the rest of his squadron did the same. To his dismay he saw Casca’s ship explode when it got shredded by a series of shots from some of the new X-wings, but he was the squadron’s only loss from the new attack. Trevor was getting frustrated with the amount of fighters that were now swarming his squadron, wanting to desperately get out of the dog fighting for five minutes or so.

Well, we could always ditch this group to Dragon and try to catch up to Rogue. I guess it doesn’t matter if he turns back to give us a hand or not, a single fighter isn’t going to turn the outcome of this swarm. Trevor thought to himself grimly as he noted that Rogue’s blip on the radar wasn’t turning back, but instead shooting past the other Y-wings and B-wings.

“Alright, Nazgul Squadron. Let’s leave these to Dragon and hope for the best, we need to get up and help save those ships that the B-wings and Y-wings are chasing. Disengage whoever you’re tangled up with and let’s go.” Trevor ordered, cutting hard in the opposite direction the X-wing he was tailing was flying and looping himself around the smaller dogfight to head after the Y-wing squadron still headed for the VE ships.

“Rogue, what’re you up to anyways?” Trevor asked, noticing that the dot on his radar that represented Rogue was still fleeing.

“Going to check out what it is we’re trying to save.” Rogue explained, and Trevor left it at that. I hope whatever it is, it can give us some help. Trevor thought to himself as the rest of Nazgul formed up on him, Dragon squadron doing their best to slow the X-wings and other Rebel ships from following.

Rogue was still racing hard for those ships. He hoped he wouldn't get busted for disobeying orders, but hey it was only in a simulation. He saw Casca's blip disappear off the sensors, that meant he was gone. So only he, Castor, Trevor and Jeg were left “alive.” It was going to be close.

The ships he was trying to reach were finally coming into range for his sensors to get reads on their types. But what they came as was surprising. The lead ship was showing as a Corellian CD-710 Heavy Destroyer with a CC-6500 Heavy Missile Frigate and a DP-20 Gunship as escorts.

Those are Corellian ships. The VE doesn't use them or so I know of. I heard we were getting new ship but man! Those things are putting out some fire power.

His sensors showed one, then two then three missile salvos race out to engage the Rebel ships that were racing to surround them. Each ship had fired its own salvo of concussion missiles. He could help but laugh as an entire squadron of Y-wings he read in the distance disappeared off the sensors. Trevor and the others had to know about these babies.

“Five to Squadron. You won't believe this! The newcomers are Corellian ships. Big boys riping with firepower. And the flagship's got a hangar bay. Looks like we just might make it through this one. ” he radioed to the others.

Suddenly his sensors screamed of a targeting lock. Someone was about to shoot a missile at him. He threw the fighter into evasive maneuvers, looking for the shooter.  He spotted it coming from the same direction as Trev and the others. A single A-wing going for broke. Someone had turned up the AI on that one. It must have dumped all power to the engines like he had done in order to reach missile range.  With no shields, no lasers and no time to charge them, this one was going to be close. Very Close.

Trevor heard Rogue’s comment over the comm. and had to check his ears to make sure he had heard correctly. Corellian ships were fairly strong and definitely going to give them a hand. Trevor could see the Y-wings in the distance all get wiped out, but had a sick feeling in his gut that someone out there was probably just trying to get their hopes up that this would be some sort of savior. Nazgul was getting lightly pelted from behind but so far none of the X-wings or Y-wings were able to catch up. Trevor blinked as an A-wing ripped past him and he tried to get a lock but failed.

The A-wing was completely hauling, and Trevor dumped some of his power from his cannons to his engines to catch up. He was still losing ground though, and the A-wing could be seen flying in a style that indicated it was attempting to get a lock on Rogue. Trevor saw Rogue’s fighter whip around in the far off distance and fly back towards the A-wing. Assuming Rogue had used a similar power control as the A-wing to gain all his extra speed, Trevor figured both ships had a very small amount of shielding, if any, and very low cannon levels.

The battle was on as the A-wing got within shooting range, trying to open up on Rogue’s fighter, having abandoned or lost the missile lock. Rogue’s fighter twisted and spun around, evading all the shots the A-wing could muster. The dance was incredible to watch from a distance, and Trevor knew it was as dangerous as it was beautiful. Rogue was close to being eliminated though, and Trevor didn’t want that to happen.

Slowly her saw the tide of the fight turning though, as Rogue managed to perform some fancy maneuvers and trip up the increased AI of the A-wing. He got behind it and opened fire without aiming, correcting his shots as he went. Finally he struck home enough times and Trevor confirmed the kill.

“Good one Rogue, now lets see how we handle these NR bastards with a few helpful ships on our side.” Trevor said, his voice seeming empowered by the excitement he was feeling.

Castor dived to dodge the barrage of an X-Wing’s laser cannons. He swore as he took some heavy hits to his shields. His dived turned into a roll as he weaved through a nest of fighters blasting at each other for dear life. Unfortunately, the X-Wing tailing Castor wasn’t so easily dissuade, and continued his assault. Castor kept up the chase for quite a while, even managing tight turns and letting off a few salvos from his cannons. But, then the worst possible thing happened: the X-Wing got a missile lock. As Castor started to juke out of the way, a voice came in over the comm.

“This is Dragon Five. Hang in there, kid, I’ve got him.”

The TIE Avenger opened fire with its main cannons, tearing the X-Wing apart in a torrent of singed and crushed durasteel. The Avenger came up along Castor’s port side and gave him a salute of the wings. Castor followed suit and they broke off to find new targets. Castor’s newest target was a lone A-Wing making an attack run on one of the Nazguls. Castor didn’t give it the option; he ripped into the A-Wing with his cannons, shredding the shields in mere seconds. The A-Wing broke off the attack, and Castor gave chase. The A-Wing attempted to dodge left and right as Castor’s cannons rained death upon him. Unfortunately for the pilot, he failed to notice that Castor had gotten a missile lock. As the A-Wing turned hard to starboard, Castor released the missile, blowing the A-Wing apart. He turned back and went to the raven’s nest.

Jegora spun his TIE around. An X-Wing was flying off to his starboard, and he thought that now might be a good time to blow it up. The simulation was reaching impossible odds but at this point Jegora didn’t really care. For him it was a race against time to see how many of the NR ships he could blow up.

Firing with his cannons on stutter got the X’s attention. It spun around and flew right at Jegora, a move that he wasn’t really expecting. He threw his ship into a roll and banked away from the X-Wing. A head on confrontation was not what he had in mind.

As he rolled away another X-Wing came in from behind, firing. Jegora rolled away again, barely avoiding the cannon fire. Now both X-Wings were on his tail. Jegora smiled to himself. This was getting interesting.

Attempting a move for what seemed like the thousandth time in this simulation, Jegora slammed on the brakes. It didn’t work quite so well this time, though. Programmers must have made some adjustments, Jegora thought to himself.

Instead of over shooting Jegora like they were supposed to, the X-Wings simple peeled off in opposite directions. Jegora was dumfounded. He couldn’t figure out what the maneuver did for the X-Wings, but he knew it had to be advantageous for the NR ships. He quickly throttled up and sped off.

Before long the X-Wings were back on his tail, firing with all of their lasers. It was a miracle Jegora didn’t get blown out of the sky. He was, however, taking hits. A bolt had completely drained his rear shields and his right solar panel had taken a glancing shot.

“Uh, this is 2. I could use some assistance,” he said over the radio.

Then he started to pray.

It had taken some really, really fancy flying, but Rogue had managed to turn the tables on the A-wing while dumping power to his lasers. Now he was once again hunting bombers. Since he was out in front of them, it didn't require a whole lot of speed, so he had the lasers and shields at max recharge.  At those settings and a little skill, he could go head to head with the Y-wings if he had to.

He steered right for the nearest Y-wing. Due to the moves needed to beat the A-wing, he was coming in on it from a side angle. Hopefully the AI wasn't smart enough to “see” him coming in before he got the first shots off. He made sure he had the throttle all the way forward, then mashed the trigger. Double green lasers streaked out.

The Y-wings shields glowed under the damage his lasers were inflicting, but it held its course. So Rogue held his. He held down the trigger, sending pair bolts out as he watched the laser power meter start to dip. Gaps appeared in the shields, and he watched bolts start to impact on the fighter's armor. But still the Y-wing maintained its course.  Whoever was running the Y-wings much have gone to the refresher or something.  Finally one of the engine nacelles gave up and the fighter exploded.

Rogue simply barrel rolled to clear the debris and started shooting at the next Y-wing in line. He was almost directly behind it, and slightly below, so the turret couldn't bear on him.

Ha Ha Ha. Take that!

Finally Nazgul Squadron, what was left of it, had gotten back alongside Rogue. This was partially because Rogue had flown back to them to help out with the fighters, but also because when he had finally reached the support ships he had stopped advancing. Trevor’s guess had been right; the support ships were no longer firing missiles at the advancing group of NR fighters. Once they had reached the range of the ship’s guns though, a firefight broke out once more.

Glad those are on our side though, but they aren’t really doing much. Trevor thought to himself as he noted that the support ships seemed to be missing more often then not. He shrugged and put both hands back on the control yoke, turning back into the battle going on near him. Dragon squadron and Nazgul squadron were working closely together to destroy various fighters, and doing a rapid job of it to.

Trevor spotted one of the E-wings straggling around, having been damaged at some earlier point in the battle. He didn’t even bother trying to sneak around it, just counted on it having no shielding and not being able to react quickly. He squeezed the cannon off in stutter fire, grinning when he noted that the E-wing didn’t have any shields. It began to return far, but far too late. It had gotten off a small salvo of shots that weakened Trevor’s shields to 50% before it was blown apart by the devastating green bolts of the TIE Interceptor.

Rogue finished off the second Y-wing and rolled in on a third. Either something was wrong in the programming, or someone felt like giving them a break. Despite losing two already and a third under attack, they were still maintaining their course toward the Corellian ships.

Number three took hit after hit, but finally something in the center of the fighter detonated. It quickly spread to the engines and took the rest of the fighter up with it. That was one third of the Y-wings he had opened up on. But still they went on. Trev and Jeg as well as the remaining Dragons were working on the other remaining fighters. He saw the blip of an E-wing disappear from in front of the blip of Trev's Interceptor.

He rolled in on the fourth Y-wing and opened fire. Since he had the majority of his power going to the shields and lasers, his engines were running on less. So now the Y-wings had managed to open up the range a bit. He had to reduce the recharge rates to seventy five percent to get some speed back.  He had to hurry if he was going to finish off these Y-wings in time. The B-wings were still out in front, so they were almost in torpedo range of the ships.

His speed had increased, but he was only barely closing on the Y-wing still. Blue ion bolts raced by, the turret gunner was trying to get a lucky hit. But Rogue didn't feel like obliging him. He mashed the trigger again and mercilessly blew the Y-wing out of space.

Trevor had given up on the battle going on with the other snub fighters. It was annoying him to no end how he’d just pick one target after destroying the last. He blasted past Rogue and his group of unflinching Y-wings, bringing his cannons to bear on the B-wings that were leading the group. The Y-wings behind him were taking the occasional shot but none seemed to hit him very hard, and he felt that if the difficulty had been eased up, he didn’t know why. Something much more difficult must have been coming up soon.

He attempted to get a lock on the rear of one of the B-wings, but for some reason found his targeting computer to be malfunctioning. It wouldn’t adjust no matter how he twisted the targeting knobs, meaning that he must have been right about something harder coming up. The targeting computers had been knocked out, and other things might still be coming their way.

“Guys, anyone else having a targeting computer working?” Trevor asked, tapping his monitor sharply incase the screen had frozen. When it did nothing but fuzz and unfuzz as he smacked it, he began to feel that it had in fact frozen.

“I’ve got none either, commander. I think it’s our newest challenge, to kick some ass without targeting systems.” Castor said with a grin that Trevor couldn’t see. The new challenge was definitely going to make things harder. We jut can’t get a break in this, can we. Trevor thought to himself.

Castor kept in tight next to Rogue as Trevor came up alongside them with Jeg at his wing. Their targeting computers had switched off, and Castor smiled. It was just one more thing about this impossible exercise that he was coming to enjoy. Dragon squad was doing well, ripping into a small flight of X-Wings that were about a click ahead of them. Trevor’s voice came over the comm:

“OK, guys, look at your radars. It looks like we have some B-Wings making a run for it. Let’s not give them the chance. Pick your targets. With our targeting computers gone, make it a line-of-sight shot; if it looks good, take it. OK, Break up; keep with your wingmen and fly safe.”

Trevor and Jeg flew off to port, leaving Castor and Rogue to make up their plan.

“OK, Castor, we’re gonna have to do this carefully, so we don’t attract any unwanted attention. Just stick by me, and when I say take the shot, do it.”

“You got it, Rogue. I’m with you. Take it away.”

Castor kept off to the left of Rogue’s TIE as they closed in on the B-Wing. Castor’s heart was pounding; he could feel it in his head. His hands were shaking, and he could anticipate the shot coming. The Rogue gave him the order:

“OK< do it now!”

Rogue and Castor opened fire in tandem, unleashing bolts off green death on their target. The B-Wing managed to dodge a few bolts, which wasn’t a big feat, considering that the Nazguls had no targeting computers. However, within a few seconds, the B-Wing’s shields were gone, and soon after, so was the rest of it. As Rogue and Castor turned around back towards the main fight, Trevor’s voice came over the comm.

“Nice shooting, boys. We got ours too. Now let’s go back and help out the Dragons.”

"Nice shooting, boys. We got ours, too. Now let's go back and help out the Dragons," Trevor directed.

Castor smiled to himself. There were only four Nazgul pilots left, but with the timely arrival of the Corellian-made Imperial ships, they still had a fighting chance in this thing.

And then all hell broke loose.

*          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *

Rogue was still smiling, appreciating his handiwork in taking out that B-Wing, when it happened. His TIE Interceptor was rocked with green laser fire. Wait a second - green?

"What the hell?" Jegora shouted over the comm. "Where's that fire coming from?"

Oh no, Rogue thought. He was dumbfounded. If he wasn't seeing it with his own eyes, he wouldn't believe it. But...

"Nazgul One, we're in trouble. Looks like Dragon Squadron has turned traitor."

*          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *

"Sythspawn!" Trevor cursed, not caring who heard him now. TIE Avengers were flying all over the place in front of him, and it was all he could do to avoid their laser fire. He grimaced as he watched his shield indicator light begin to change colors. There's no way we can get away from these guys ... we just can't match their speed or maneuverability.

"What the frak is going on, One?" Castor asked.

"Just another part of this slagged simulation, Eleven," Trevor responded. "I guess whoever's running the show thought we were getting a little too comfortable?"

"Comfortable?" Rogue's voice was tight with concentration. "Those Corellian ships have switched sides, too, One. They're pounding the fleet."

Trevor tried not to look as an Imperial Star Destroyer began to break apart in the distance. "We can't worry about that right now, Five. We've just got to try and stay alive."

"How?" Petty Officer Fal was audibly upset. "We can't outmaneuver these TIE Avengers much longer, One."

"He's right, Lead. I hate to say, but I'm getting rocked over here."

"Just hang in there, guys ... I'll ... I'll think of something," Trevor blurted out. But what?

(Before Castor's post)

Rogue finished off the fourth Y-wing just as he caught sight of an Interceptor  “screaming” by and opening up on the B-wings.

Trevor. Has to be Trevor.  Trying to up stage me huh?

Then the suddenly his targeting computer cut off. He reached out and slapped it to make it kick back on but it stayed off. Trevor and Castor came over the com reporting theirs were out too.  But at the speed and range the remaining Y-wings were at, he didn't need the targeting computer. He lined up by sight and raked each of the remaining five Y-wings one by one until they exploded.

(After Castor's post)

Rogue lead Castor back toward Trevor and Jeg. Only two B-wings were left, but the Corellian ships could handle them easily. It was time to finish off the remaining X's, A's, and E's so they could win and end this sim. The Dragon's were holding their own, but it really was a deadlock with AI fighting AI.

Trevor lead the four of them now as one flight back into the swirling dogfight. Trev and Jeg split off to go after the remaining E-wing, while Rogue lead Castor to engage the A-wings.

Really wish I had some missiles left.  But we used them all up on that Neb-B.

A pair of A-wings spotted them lining up on them, and broke around to engage them. Killing them without the assistance of the targeting computers would be difficult. But trying it in a sim was a lot better than having to do it in real combat.

Castor saw the A-Wings coming, and he was ready. He opened fire with his cannons, but the A-Wing merely dodged. He broke off at the same time that Rogue did, waiting until the A-Wing was in the center of the window before opening fire. But the AI of this particular enemy was quite high, and dodged around his bolts without a second glance. The A-Wing turned around and opened fire with its cannons again, shedding away Castor’s shields. Castor swore as he pulled hard to starboard to avoid the cannon barrage. He watched as some red bolts flew around his field of vision, going off aimlessly into space. He went into a tight spin to try and throw the A-Wing off, and it worked for a time. He managed to let the A-Wing pass him enough to get in some good hits to its aft shields, watching as little blue blips brought his enemy that much closer to death. Castor looked at his shield; they were only about 50 percent alive.

The dogfight was now becoming desperate. Castor’s spins were working, but he couldn’t get a good enough shot to really bring him down. Soon enough, the A-Wing was on top of him again, hitting his aft shields with laser fire. Castor juked left and right to avoid the blasts of fire, and he managed to throw off some of them. Then Castor had an idea: He hit his breaks, stopping the Interceptor in mid-flight. The A-Wing overshot Castor and he opened fire, not stopping until he got a kill. And the kill came in the form of a massive fireball. Castor gave a silent victory, and it soon ended when Castor looked at his HUD: the A-Wing pulled the ace with a missile lock. Castor merely stared out as the white-hot projectile came towards him, and he smiled. Well, this was fun, were Castor’s final thoughts as the missile slammed into his TIE, blasting him into oblivion.

Jegora watched as the missile streaked towards Castor. Nazgul Squadron was down to three members, and had no allies that could help them out. To make matter worse TIE Avengers were now attacking them, along with several dozen NR ships. Jegora felt like kicking something.

It was bad enough that Castor had been killed, and that Nazgul was down to three pilots, but now they were turning an already doomed situation into a blood bath. The fact that Dragon squadron had turned on them made the situation so crazy that Jegora almost had to laugh. Except that he was too focused on avoiding the cannon fire, both green and red, to laugh.

At the moment Rogue was by himself on the edge of the battle. He was hanging in there, but Jegora knew that if the three pilots were to have any chance at all they had to group up. His theory was soon proved correct with the arrival of Trevor’s voice in his helmet.

“Alright 2, lets go help Rogue out,” Trevor’s voice said.

“Roger that Lead,” Jegora replied.

There was a lot of space and a lot of enemies between Jegora and Rogue, and Jegora knew that it was going to be an interesting journey. Together Trevor and Jegora kicked their TIEs into full throttle and made to cut right through the center of the NR ships. There only hope was to go bold, and hit hard.

“Alright Jegora, were going in hard and fast. Let’s blaze a trail.” Trevor sounded eager to dust some more ships.

Jegora was more than willing to participate. He followed Trevor into the fray, full speed and guns blazing. They caught an X-Wing loitering around and quickly blew it to bits. Jegora let out a tight smile in the simulator cockpit.

“TIE Avenger, 1 o’clock,” Trevor said. “Let’s take him.”

Jegora didn’t bother to acknowledge the order. He adjusted course slightly, and targeted the Avenger. It would seem as if the Avenger was inspecting a wreck of one of the TIE Interceptors.

Odd behavior for an AI unit, Jegora thought to himself.

He didn’t ponder it long, though. The combined linked laser fire of Trevor’s and Jegora’s cannons quickly put an end to the inspection. But now the NR ships and the Avengers were swarming them. And the two pilots still had a little over halfway to go before they reached Rogue.

Things were getting interesting.

Rogue was dogfighting the A-wing he had picked up while Castor took its wingman. Suddenly Castor's Interceptor exploded from a missile hit. Then to make matters worse, the odds changed to being against them again, as the Avengers of Dragon Squadron suddenly opened fire on the Interceptors. So now he not only had 6 angry A-wings to deal with, he also had 3 T/A's out for him.

Might be time for us to just cut in run. Run for the ships, dock and just end this.

But a quick peek at the sensors showed the Corellian ships now coming toward them. And leading them was the two B-wings that had gotten away.

Looks like they turned too. Frak. That means no place to run.

He had to hook up with the others, and he heard Trevor call out the same idea to Jeg. They were going to fight their way to him, so he had to the same.

He sent more lasers racing after the A-wing while trying to stick to its tail. He had to kill this one and watch his tail to make sure no one dropped in behind him. If they did, he was toast. It was going to be busy and pain filled next few minutes. Even in a simulator, pulling some of the moves still hurt thanks to the grav generator built into the simulator.

He finally got the A-wing to hold straight and level for long enough for a pair of lasers to hit and punch through the shields. Several more of the stutter fire bolts hit and at least one hit the cockpit and the A-wing started tumbling. But he didn't have time to pay it any more attention. A T/A was already lining up on him.

Trevor couldn’t believe it when he saw green cannon fire headed towards him. He couldn’t dodge the original burst but had time to roll out of the way of the other stuff. The surprise change of sides for the TIE Avengers was frustrating, but definitely not something he could honestly say was ‘surprising’. He was expecting a huge change sooner or later, and now was later.

The plan was to join up with Rogue and create a flight of three, allowing them to provide themselves with the best chance of survival. To Trevor’s dismay though, every one of the remaining twenty-six fighters was after one of the three pilots. If the battle lasted another five minutes, Trevor would be seriously impressed. He snapped off a series of shots t the final E-wing in the battle, hardly able to believe his luck when the craft broke apart and a chunk of the hull crashed through the shielding and into the cockpit of an X-wing attempting to gain ground on the TIE Interceptors.

“This is going to be pretty damn crazy, Jeg. Well, even with this being a sim, I’ve always wanted to say it. Live fast, die hard. Let’s save Rogue.” Trevor said, a grin spreading inexplicably across his face. The distance between them and the fighter that was Rogue’s was still huge, but Trevor had a feeling they might at least be able to form up together. The Corellian ships were nothing to worry about yet because they couldn’t seem to hit anything anyways, but the chance that they still had missiles was unnerving. It was going to be an incredibly long, short battle.

Rogue was flying like he was fighting for his life. Which technically he was. But if he died in this, all that happened was the sim ended and he could go get a beer. But he didn't like to loose. Ever.

He had given up on killing specific fighters. He couldn't take the time to focus that much. All he could do was keep turning and moving, trying to head toward Trevor and Jeg. If an enemy got in front of his guns, he sent lasers racing at them until they moved, or someone dropped in behind him and he had to go evasive.

I am so going to need a massage after this. My neck is killing me.

The “viewports” that normally would be there in a real squint were still there, they just had holograph screens in them to simulate showing the aft and side views. So he still had to lean and twist to see out of them like he was in a real Interceptor.

At least I've got this open faced helmet. Its lighter and far cooler than the standard closed in models the others wear. And I can wipe the sweat off my brow.

Speaking of sweat, it was now pouring off him. The cooling unit couldn't seem to keep up. And the simulators were always colder than anywhere else due to the cooling units to keep the computers from over heating. But he was still sweating.

He hit another Rebel fighter with rapid fire single lasers until it took damage and got out of his way. He was starting to see a pattern it seemed.

Its almost like the AI is aware of what the three of us are trying to do. And as if they are trying to herd me away from the others.  Stupid nerf-header computer techs!

Jegora cringed as a bolt rocked his TIE. They were just about half way through the enemy ships, but they were getting swarmed big time by the NR ships and the renegade Avengers. Jegora was pulling crazy maneuvers just to remain unharmed. He was also making himself sick.

Jegora lined up an X-Wing that was in his path. He threw his ship into a wild roll, making him almost impossible to hit. It also made it impossible to hit anything. It did, however, create a giant vortex of green lasers that scared off most of the AI. In their path.

Jegora’s threat alarm went off. He was being tailed by one of the Avengers. He couldn’t out maneuver the Avenger, and he couldn’t outrun it. He would just have to try and not get shot.

“Lead, this is 2, I got a TIE/A on my tail,” Jegora said after a minute.

There was a pause while Trevor checked his radar. “I see em. Hold on, I’m gonna try something.”

With no further ado Trevor cut his throttle to nil. Jegora flew past, along with the TIE/A that was chasing him. Trevor sped up, and was now behind the traitorous Avenger. After a few seconds Jegora pulled up sharply and Trevor ripped the renegade fighter apart with his lasers.

“Nice shot-” Jegora began. He was interrupted by laser fire coming right at him. He didn’t even have time to get a targeting lock. An X-Wing was flying right for him, guns blazing. Quickly he depressed his fire trigger, sending green lasers lancing towards the heavy NR fighter.

The X-Wing’s shields absorbed most of it, but a few bolts got through and ripped one of the wings off. The X-Wing went into an uncontrolled spin, crashing into another X-Wing. Jegora smiled to himself. It looked like he still had some luck

One of the B-wings was pelting Trevor with its ion cannons, sending his shields through rapid drops. He’d just helped fend off a TIE Avenger for Jeg, but at the same time had allowed a B-wing to get onto him. He was aiming to do some fancy flying, but with the amount of enemy pilots around, fancy was beginning to become a little less spectacular. He could only roll so far without almost running into another fighter.

“This is Lead, I’ve got a B-wing on me, could use a hand before he breaks through the shielding.” Trevor said calmly, weaving to and fro to avoid the shots of the B-wing. Jeg’s reply was delayed and at first Trevor couldn’t tell why, then he realized the pilot was attempting to escape from some X-wings.

“Can’t do it, lead. I’ve got my own problems. Best of luck with that B-wing.” Jeg said before attempting a rolling loop to get behind his opponents. The move wasn’t very successful. Trevor sighed and decided to try his own maneuver to avoid the B-wing. Sweeping wide on a turn, he came damn near to flying into an X-wing. Using precision handling only the TIE Interceptor had, he avoided the collision and hoped the B-wing would either have to turn wide enough to avoid the collision that he could get away, or if his luck held, crash into the X-wing.

His luck held and the two New Republic fighters collided in a fiery explosion, sending debris everywhere behind Trevor. I realize this is on a hard difficulty, but the enemy maneuverability obviously hasn’t been put up past ‘average’. Trevor thought to himself as he went to give Jeg some help.

Jegora cursed to himself. He had two X-Wings on his tail, and he had just executed a maneuver that had no apparent affect on them. He heard Trevor ask for some assistance, and Jegora vaguely remembered saying no can do. That stuff didn’t seem very important as laser bolts flew past his TIE.

Jegora was desperate. He pulled a three hundred and sixty degree turn, facing both X-Wings. He knew what he was doing was suicide, but the whole simulation was suicide. He quickly let loose with his laser cannons, clipping the shields of one of the X’s.

After successfully evading the X-Wings, he turned to see if he could help Trevor out. The commander seemed to have it under control, however. Jegora turned his ship back to where Rogue was going crazy with his TIE and pressed the throttle forward.

It was going to be a tight race. If Jegora and Trevor could get there before Rogue was swarmed by the NR ships and the TIE Avengers then they might, they just might have a sliver of a chance. If not...well, things were looking bleak already.

Jegora saw a lone A-Wing out of the corner of his eye and made a split second decision. He jerked his fighter towards the lone NR ship and locked on. The A-Wing seemed to be trying to decide between going after Rogue or intercepting Jegora and Trevor. Jegora ended the AI’s debate with a quad linked laser blast. The blast tore the shields apart and blew the A-Wing into space dust.

“Nice shooting, 2” Trevor said.

Jegora acknowledged the compliment and pushed on.

The two pilots were having some luck trying to get across the battlefield to Rogue. Eventually though, it was like a door opened and the fighters seemed to part for the two blazing Interceptors. Rogue was in the midst of killing off an X-wing when Trevor and Jegora finally managed to join up with him, completing the flight of three. Rogue hadn’t even noticed them until a pair of green bolts shot past his fighter and finished off the X-wing he was hunting.

“Whoa, good to see you guys.” Rogue smiled; finally glad to have a bit of the team back with him. Trevor had to admit that they were all going to be killed off shortly, but none of the three had any sort of plans to let this thing end easily. They were going out kicking and screaming, to the best of their abilities.

Trevor found himself having to wipe his hands on his pant legs every few minutes to rid them of perspiration, and found that the cockpit of the simulator seemed to be getting terribly hot. His body was beginning to feel worn from all the forces that the grav replicator was putting on him, but did his best to ignore the oh-so-familiar feeling. About time I got warmed up.

The trio formed up into a classic formation and turned their combined cannon power on the remaining B-wing who had chosen to fly too near the deadly trio. Jeg’s cannons dealt the killing blow, while Trevor’s and Rogue’s helped out along the way.

“Let’s finish this thing up within the next little while, hey?” Rogue said, his voice sounding strained. “I’m starting to feel the effects of this stuff now.”

“I totally agree, Rogue, let’s get it done.”

Jegora was happy to be back in some semblance of a flight. The three pilots could now support one another, making them much more lethal. Because all they had to rely on was their speed, they had to move fast and stay sharp. Jegora was starting to get tired of the simulation.

As soon as the three pilots had rejoined they dove back into the fight. They realized that their only chance was to attack as aggressively as possible. Jegora flew beside Trevor in formation as they targeted another X-Wing. The X-Wing pilot was good, but under the combined fire of all three TIEs he didn’t last very long.

Jegora’s threat warning went off. The TIEs had broken away during the chase. The only ships fast enough to keep up with them, a trio of A-Wings, was now hot on their tail. Jegora opened a link to the flight and reported the aggressors.

“This is 2. We have three A-Wing profiles coming up aft,” he said.

“Roger that,” Rogue said.

“I see them 2,” responded Trevor.

Jegora waited for one of the more senior officers to make a decision. He was still new to the Navy, and his tactical experience was limited. As shots flew past his ship, he hoped they would make a decision soon.

“Alright, let’s pull a 360,” Trevor said.

Jegora grinned. It was a classic interceptor move. Slam on the brakes, spin around 180 degrees, shoot, spin another 180 degrees, chase whatever was still left. Jegora rested his hand on his throttle, waiting for the order.

“Now!” Trevor said.
