Operation Slug Hunt

Background

The intelligence material Jester had recovered on its previous mission has revealed traces of illegal weapons supply by a Hutt syndicate. While the Hutts are politically apathetic to the current state of war between the Empire and the New Republic, they have found it profitable to conduct gun-running operations for various insurgency groups currently operating within Imperial space.

Intelligence agents, facilitated by recent evidence uncovered on Severin, has pinpointed a specific base of operations where a Hutt syndicate is currently located. The planet Ashvaka in the Mirwais system, a desolate backwater, hosts the headquaters of the drug lord Barzini the Hutt. Barzini has a well-armed mercenary force that protects several key investments of his on Ashvaka; his syndicate runs several weapons production plants and well producing illegal narcotic substances to finance his profit agendas.

Due to a negligible Imperial presence in the Mirwais system, Barzini the Hutt has succeeded in monopolizing the entire economy of Ashvaka. Arms and narcotics are the planet's primary exports alongside products such as animal pelts and foodstuff. Barzini is essentially the de facto ruler of the planet, and his mercenaries frequently enforce his harsh rule over the local populace, extorting and exploiting them do his bidding.

The destructive impact he brings has led to the creation of a small resistance group, the Peshargas. The Peshargas aim to counter the debilitating effects the illegal Barzini syndicate has on the Ashvaka society and economy. However, their efforts have been largely futile due to tactical deficiencies such as a lack of modern weaponry and manpower. Their guerrilla operations nonetheless has seen noted success against the Barzini drug syndicate and they pose a formidable challenge.

Mission Task

Army High Command has devised Operation Slug Hunt to remove the Barzini drug syndicate from power in the Mirwais system and to shut down all arms and narcotics production under his charge. A Task Force, codenamed Jude, shall be dispatched to execute the aim of toppling Barzini.

Units of Task Force Jude

Ground Components
  • Jester Squad

  • Bravo Company, 501st Infantry Regiment

Naval Support Components
  • Strike-class Medium Cruiser Vehemence

  • 3 TIE squadrons attached to Vehemence :
    WartHog Squadron - TIE/sc Scimitar Assault Bombers

    Hind Squadron - Standard TIE Bombers

    Kilo Squadron - Standard TIE Interceptors

The Vehemence shall be the command headquarters of Task Force Jude. The force shall launch from the cruiser on immediate notice.

Jester Squad and Bravo Company will assault and secure an airbase located at latitude 18'55 N and longtitude 158'48 W, codenamed Objective Rhino. The two units will then utilize it as a base of operations with Bravo responsible for base security. Once Rhino is secured, contact and liason should be made with the Persharga resistance to facilitate our developments. Jester squad will utilize their assistance to conduct reconnaissance missions that aim to wipe out key targets using aerial strikes from the Vehemence's TIE Bombers or direct orbital cannon strikes. A raid will then be conducted to assassinate Barzini and key lieutenants within his structure to ensure that his syndicate shall be effectively decapitated from power.

Operations Order

Phase I
  • Assault and secure Objective Rhino

Phase II
  • Contact local resistance forces
  • Locate and destroy weapons factories
  • Locate and destroy spice mining operations

Phase III
  • Assassinate Barzini the Hutt and key lieutenants

Field intelligence reports that the headquarters of the Barzini drug syndicate is located in a complex system of caves, rendering aerial strikes impotent.

Ashvaka Planetary Data

Type: Terrestrial satellite
Temperature: Continental
Atmosphere: Type I, inhabitable
Hydrosphere: Arid
Gravity: Standard
Terrain: Deserts and mountains
Length of day: 19 hours
Length of year: 254 days
Sapient species: Humans
Starport: None
Population: 0.7 billion
Government: Anarchic crime lords and tribal factions
Tech level: Primitive
Major exports: Illegal arms and narcotic substances, animal pelts, foodstuff
Major imports: Negligible

The planet is largely a mountainous landmass with few rivers and seas. The terrain is largely desert dotted with the prime geographical features being rocky highlands and caves. The economy before Barzini's take-over was sustained through simple industries such as farming. If conditions are stabilized through Operation Slug Hunt, the planet has the potential to be a priority for development by the Empire for its hitherto untapped rich resources.

The members of Jester squad looked substantially worse for wear. They had only been allowed 24 hours to rest before being called to their next briefing and the majority of them had effectively used that time to once again plunder the stores of all the bars in the immediate vicinity of the barracks. Kami had already been subjected to a polite drilling by the officer in charge of the barracks mess, who despite the differences in his rank and hers, had been incensed enough to speak his mind about the state the common room was now in. Thankfully, Kami had been able to dispatch 3D to deal with him. Although the droid had an annoying habit of being underfoot no matter where she went, he had already taken it upon himself to play the role of quartermaster and return a ‘degree of organization to the rabble of Jester Squad.’

“Alright,” Kami stood at the front of the briefing room, choosing not to employ the podium and projector she had used for the last mission. If she had learnt anything at all on Severin it was that Jester wasn’t an average squad, and that they didn’t need to be guided through the process of a mission like most regulars, “Intelligence have gotten what they wanted from Yegor, so give yourselves a pat on the back for resisting the urge to kill him.”

She paused briefly, flicking her gaze upwards as the door to the briefing room slid open. A young woman and a slightly disheveled man entered, wearing uniforms fresh enough to have come straight from the packet.

“Apologies Sergeant,” The woman said, fixing intense blue eyes on Kami, “We got lost.”

Kami waved away the apology with one hand, “Take a seat. Jester, these are our two newest members, Senior Sergeant Aeos and Private Vasili.”

“The flyboys?” Eviscares turned in his chair to fix a baleful eye on the two newcomers, “I hope you two know which end of a blaster to use.”

“They wouldn’t be here if they didn’t,” Merrick interjected from where she was seated casually on the edge of the podium.

Kami cleared her throat, “Back to the matter at hand. Yegor squealed so we now know which Hutt syndicate took it upon themselves to provide arms and funding to the Severin Rebellion.  We’re headed to the planet Ashvaka in the Mirwais system to hunt down the drug lord Barzini the Hutt and stir up the little empire that he’s made for himself there at the expense of the local population.”

She glanced at her chrono, and then back to her squad “A more detailed briefing has been forwarded to you all courtesy of Hashi, for you to review during flight. We leave in an hour, we want to strike before Barzini gets wind that we’ll be coming.”

Heads nodded, and Jester came to their feet, trailing out of the room to make the necessary preparations for their next foray. Kami intercepted the two recently turned soldiers as they made to follow their new squad mates, “You’ll have an extra file detailing what went on during our last mission. I take it you’ve been seen too, received weapons, that kind of thing?”

It was Aeos who once again answered, “Yes Sarge, we’re all set.”

“Good,” Kami offered them a smile, “Glad you two are finally here. Don’t mind the others, they’ll warm up to you as soon as they realize you can kill as well as they can.”

“There you are Sergeant!”

3D came tottering through the door, his legs moving impossibly fast for a droid series that was renowned for its sluggishness, “I must insist that you respond to my pages,” He snapped, unceremoniously shoving Vasili aside to reach her, “I have more than a few administrative matters for you to see to before you leave.”

Kami resisted the urge to groan aloud. She gestured leave for Vasili and Aeos to depart, then gave her full attention to the droid, who was wearing a strangely reprimanding expression despite the permanent cast to his metallic features, “Alright, lead on.”

“You are a eff' up, you do know that, right?”
“Whatever you say my lady,” was the sluggish and cocky reply from the man beside her. The latter, however, seemed more appalled at idea of a droid shoving him out of its way as if he was a droid as well, or some other form of a low life placed at the bottom of the social ladder.

Aeos sighed as she wiped fallen strands of copper hair away from her eyes. Vasili, next to her, payed no heed to her grunts and growls of frustration as he flipped out his datapad, and continued his search on the loaded map for all the local bars and cantinas.

“Vee, you have no pay...just in case you forgot.”
“But, you said-”
“I said, I'll give you some if you behave,” she snapped as she pressed two fingers to her temple.

“What about, I'll behave on the mission if you give me now?”
“What about I place a burning blaster hole through your lifeless brain if you screw it up once,”
“Still angry bout what happened in Doashim?”
“Damn right I'll kill you, now run along and get your gear for this mission, no matter what Garet said, I ain't your babysitter.”

The slightly aggravated female quickly made her escape from Vasili and made her way to her newly  assigned quarters. Upon entering, another sigh followed as her gaze fell upon the stormy contents piling about the small square of living space.
“Still need to settle right?”
Warm grey eyes chuckled at the chaos that piled about. A vivid image of the same familiar set of eyes accompanied with a face flashed across her thoughts.

“Sergeant Eviscares? Right?”
“Well, well, no need for introduction then, I'm your Assistent Squadleader, feel free to direct any questions to me, if you find Kami or Merrick unavailable, welcome to the squad,” he muttered as he rested his hand comfortably on the petite carbine that hung from his side.
Aeos chuckled at the sergeant in front of her.
Kami was right, they warm up very quickly, she mused to her self.
“Thanks Evis,feels good to have my feet back on the ground,” she replied curtly yet friendly.
“Oh yeah? I can imagine that,” replied Evis jokingly. Aeos glanced around uncomfortably, suddenly realizing they were making conversation in a hallway.

“Listen, lemme grab some gear, I assume you're packed already and I'll meet you with Vee at the bar, I prefer making conversation in style,”
Aeos grinned as she grabbed the ends of the loose hair that fell on the back of her ears. A habit she picked up when nervous or shy.
“Conversation can wait, I'll talk to you and Decem when we board, I think the Private will need another briefing,” replied Eviscares as he gave a small pat on the butt end of his carbine.
“Sounds good, I'll see you then,” called Aeos as Eviscares left.

Humming softly she turned back to the chaotic state of her room.
“Now, this simply won't do,” she muttered while flipping her wrist around to see for the time. About fifty minutes were left, she could make a quick job of this.

Rather than trash the local bars with the rest of Jester, Merrick had spent the past day catching up on her own piles of administrative disarray, sleeping and generally recovering from their previous mission. She couldn’t help but laugh as Kami walked past her in the wake of the droid they’d picked up on Severin, which gained her a venomous glance from Kami. Merrick had taken to thinking of the droid as Mule rather than 3D; he’d proven to be more stubborn than any of the members of the squad, and just about as cheeky. At least he couldn’t get drunk and destroy the place.

Merrick was a little apprehensive about having two navy grunts crash their party. Aeos was well spoken for, but Vasili was with them as a form of punishment for going AWOL from his navy duties. At least with a friend in the squad, Aeos, she hoped he would have some motivation not to be a total screw up. He’d passed all the basic proficiencies for being a stormie, but she had liked the idea of not having to hold any of the trooper’s hands on any of their missions. She sighed, shrugged and picked up her gear just as Vasili exited the Jester barracks carrying his own. “Private, a word?” Vasili spun around and looked at her, dropping his gear at his feet. Unlike the rest of the squad, he clearly had no wish to salute her. Merrick raised an eyebrow. “Let me make something clear before we even get underway. I have no problems with leaving you out there to fend for yourself if you screw up, so don’t get left behind. Until you prove otherwise, regardless of what Kami has said, you’re still a flyboy a long way from home.”

Vasili’s expression didn’t change and he made no reply, but Merrick had already left to head for the hangar. Kami would probably have a polite word with her about not tearing down the troopers right before they were deployed, but she figured Vasili would now either strive to prove himself, or die trying.

After all the bar trailing, Jester boarded their ride for the Mirwais system with heavy hearts and hangovers. They had only barely gotten out of action before Army Command decided they needed to be in the thick of things once more. They gazed longingly at their barracks, pining for their bunks, before resigning themselves to fate and higher authority.

The journey to Mirwais was an uneventful one. Exceedingly dull, in fact. Time seemed to crawl slowly in the small confines of the Lambda-class shuttle they were being ferried in.

"We're dropping out of hyperspace in ten minutes," informed Kami after a hours had passed.

Several members of the squad shifted restlessly at the announcement, while others groaned, irate at being awakened from restful slumbers. Some cleaned and assembled guns, a few played sabacc, others stole shots of stowed away liquor when they thought nobody was looking. Hashi himself was lounging lazily, drifting in and out of hazy sleep. He opened an eye and found himself looking at the disheveled newcomer, Vasili.

"Oi. Private. I have something you might want," whispered Hashi in conspirational tones to the man, beckoning him with a hand.

"What is it?" inquired Vasili, his curiosity stirred.

Hashi slipped out a bottle from his duffel bag, careful not to reveal it to the rest of the squad. He had an irrational fear that his every belonging would be stolen at the first opportunity, especially with characters like Remluf around.

"The finest. Savareen brandy."

Vasili's eyes glowed maniacally at the sight of the golden brown liquid.

"Lemme have it."

"Sure. Fifty Imperial Credits."

"Don't have that much."

Snorting, Hashi waved him off. The dejected Vasili turned and shuffled a few steps away. Hashi took in the shrunken shoulders of the former pilot and reconsidered his rejection. Sympathy welled up in him. It seemed that the man's affinity for alcohol was strong enough to affect his performance in combat. A depressed soldier can never be a good soldier. He called out to the man, halting him mid-step.

"Hey! Alright. You can have it. Pay me off later," grunted Hashi as he passed the bottle over. Vasili grabbed with surprising vigour and retreated into a corner of his own.

A shudder rocked the shuttle as the white lines of hyperspace disappeared. In the dark abyss of space, the Strike-class cruiser Vehemence floated serenely in Ashvaka's orbit. The planet itself was a barren tan globe that seemed devoid of life and activity.

"Jesters! Listen up!" exclaimed Kami as she emerged from the cockpit. The squad stopped their various activities and formed a small circle around the lady. "We'll be in the Vehemence's docking bay in a couple of minutes for the rendezvous with other units of Task Force Jude. Time now is zero four hundred hours zulu. Synchronize your chronos now. We'll have roughly three hours before our final embarkation. In the meantime, ready yourselves. Make sure all individual and squad gear is properly prepped up."

Kami paused to give them all a long and hard look.

"By the way, it will be a long time before we see home again. Take that as you will."

There was a metallic clank as the shuttle settled itself in on landing. The pistons lowered the ramp down and Jester marched down to a beehive of activity. The rest of Task Force Jude, Bravo Company namely, was crammed into the small staging area. Platoons were forming in ranks. Officers were briefing their men, running over the ops brief over and over again. NCOs hurled abuse at those who were slow at the pace. Big guys hauled heavy repeaters up shuttles earmarked for the landing force.

The Jesters stood out in their Scout Trooper armour.

"Glad to see we'll be having company down there," quipped Sergeant Eviscares.

OOC:
Hehe, hope this goes good for you guys, Kami lemme know if Gando was not a bright idea, a NPC Im creating from Bravo Company. Mostly babble crap, enjoy,

“Righto, ready Vee?” asked Aeos as she pulled on her gloves. Her gaze grazed over his already untidy manner in which he carried himself. HE grinned at her from underneath his shades and threw a cocky thumbs-up. Aeos could only imagine that his hidden eyes were doing a wink as well.

“Ready to kick butt yeah!”
“Idiot,” Aeos rolled her eyes as she plopped down on the small seat available. With a small motion of her arm, she managed to drag her carbine closer and with small circular movements she set her self to giving the lethal weapon some more shine.
“Ya bin cleanin that thing for hours darling, if it ain't clean yet, all it needs is some spit,”
Vasili made a grab for her blaster, but at that point Kami decided to speak up, much to the relief of Aeos.

"Jesters! Listen up!"
“Come, on” Aeos stood up brusquely and grabbed Vasili by his arm as she dragged him towards the small circle forming around their squad-leader.

A pause followed, before she continiued, Aeos' eyes were occupied in the manner of rolling them at  Vasili's antics.
"By the way, it will be a long time before we see home again. Take that as you will."
A sudden, but small jolt shuddered through the shuttle as it finally made its landing. The small circle scattered from each other.

“You got your chrono checked?”
“Why would I need a chrono if I had you?”
“Sod off, I'm serious Decembrist,”
Something resembling a grunt was all reply she managed to hear before she turned away from the Private to attend to some last-minute preparations before she finally slung her bag over her shoulder and joined the rest of the squad as they stepped off the shuttle.

"Glad to see we'll be having company down there,"  she heard Eviscares murmur as they gazed over the chaotic order taking place about them. It felt good to be back again, despite her doubtful thoughts about the Army. Serving Jester Squad, under the command of Merrick and Kami changed everything however.

“Beautiful ain't it?”
Aeos cocked her head to the side as she looked at Evis. The man grinned almost boyishly as he in gave his carbine another fond pat. She suppressed a laugh, and diverted her attention to the rest of the squad, pleasant yet rowdy bunch. Living right up to their reputation. A rough diamond, the whole lot of them it seemed.

There was Remluf, whom Vasili chose to hang out this moment with. A bottle, half-empty of its contents were passing between their hands ever so often. Hashi, an old battle veteran, Merrick, a woman of her age yet so much more and Durandal, another Sergeant in their midsts.

“Come people, lets not hang around wasting our precious weights on this spot,” muttered Hashi as he prompted Kami to lead the way.
Aeos paused a moment, and allowed Vasili and Remluf to catch up. A lop-sided grin appeared on the pilot's face, but it fell as quickly as it was created when Aeos grabbed the bottle of brandy from his hands.
“Shame on you for not sharing Vee,” she muttered and  tipped the bottle into her mouth, emptying it of its contents.
“Savareen brandy? You ain't got this style Vee, who gave it to you?” she asked  as she handed him the bottle to dispose of.
“Hashi-”
“Nice, remind me to ask him where he got it, won't you?”
“Your'e an evil bitch, you know that?”
Aeos chuckled,
“I heard Colonel Merrick gave you an speech earlier, seems she already knows which way to hang you,” she muttered happily as they passed another table, at the head a burly man shouting at the men around the table.

She heard men right behind her chuckling at this scene, and paused waiting them in, it was the same men who were with them in the shuttle.
“Bravo Company?”
“Yep? The illustrious Jesters?”
“Indeed, Senior Sergeant Aeos,”
Aeos extended a gloved hand at the man beside him.
“Sergeant First Class Gando, pleased to meet ya, first mission with them?”
“Yep,” replied Aeos as she gazed over the backs of her squad-mates up front.
“Nervous?”
“Nah, something tells me, its going to be blast with them,”
“Literally of figuratively?” asked Gando chuckling as they kept walking.
“Haha, funny,” muttered Aeos as a smile twitched at the corner of her mouth. For a moment they kept walking in silence in which Aeos took the opportunity to excuse her self to catch up with the rest again.

Merrick had been watching Vasili through their flight and had seen the exchange of words, and alcohol, between him and Hashi. They both knew it would be their heads if their inebriated state caused the squad any trouble through the mission, so she decided to wait and see what would come of it. She wasn’t even surprised when Vasili and Remluf made friends quickly. Maybe the fly boy could keep the psycho under control... maybe.

She’d always hated being among the regulars. Despite the obvious signs of her rank, she was always getting repetitive comments like “who’d you steal the armour off?”, “aren’t you a bit short to be a storm trooper?” and “lose the armour and show us what you really look like”. They just didn’t seem to be able to wrap their heads around such a young, especially female, army XO. With a nod to Kami, she headed straight to the common room that would accommodate them until it was time to depart. Seeing Aeos, she quietly pulled the other woman aside and suggested she keep a close eye on Vasili. He’d be sure to find several among Bravo who would share some kind of liquor with him. Aeos groaned but nodded. Merrick got the feeling she didn’t like being made a babysitter.

Merrick hadn’t been in the common room long, reading more about the target planet and its operations, before the rest of the squad arrived. Aeos was dragging Vasili behind her, who was protesting about not being permitted to make friends with the members of Bravo. He stopped struggling against Aeos and looked at Merrick as she put down her datapad and spoke to him.

“You aren’t here to make friends Private. I’d suggest you keep a low profile until you’ve done something worthy of keeping a position in this squad. Kami might be nice and accommodating, but make no such assumptions about me. If you do anything else wrong you’ll be gone so fast even Hashi won’t be able to smuggle you more brandy.” Hashi looked up at the mention of his name and suddenly looked like he wished he wasn’t in the room.  Evis and Durandal tried to make casual conversation as if they, and everyone else in the room, hadn’t been silently watching the public reprimand. Merrick had already returned her attention to the datapad.

Kami sat down next to Merrick and smiled at Vasili. “Best go and sober up flyboy. We’re sure to need everyone at their best for this mission.” He saluted Kami sloppily, whispered something to Remluf and they headed off in the direction of the mess hall. Aeos sighed and sat down opposite Kami, yet again going over her gear to make sure everything was in order for the mission.

Merrick didn’t look up this time. “Don’t sweat it Sergeant. You’re not answerable for his actions. If he screws up it’s all on him. I have no doubt you’ll be an asset to the squad.” Kami nodded her agreement and Aeos relaxed a little. Now at least she was only nervous about her own performance on her return to active duty with the army.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I hope to keep this short. You will have no doubt thoroughly gone through the various operations orders. Once, twice and likely more. I merely wish to reinforce a few key principles for this mission," said the captain of the Vehemence, a man for whom urbane and eloquent speech rolled easily off his tongue. He addressed his audience with the air of one gently reminding them of the dress code for a cocktail party. It belied the ruthless and violent nature of the operation that was only a mere hour away.

His audience for the moment in the tactical combat centre of his ship consisted of the various leaders that were to spearhead the operation. The commanding officer of Bravo and his various subordinates were present. So too were the squadron commanders of the craft designated for ground support. From Jester, Platoon Sergeant Kami, Sergeant Eviscares and Colonel Merrick were the command representatives in attendance.

The plan was mostly set. They were merely there for the confirmation brief and the official wave-off. Computer stations lined the walls, overhead lights illuminated bulkheads adorned with maps, reports and schematics. A hologram of Ashvaka took centre-stage. Over by the entrance, rifles were stacked like wet umbrellas left to dry.

"Commanders at all levels are to remind their warriors regarding the mission statement, launch code and various ground signals, recovery plans and the rules of engagement," smiled the captain, as if apologetic.

"Of course, the rules of engagement are non-existant within this scenario. They are a cumbersome formality. You are invited to fire upon anything that you deem remotely hostile. However, please avoid excessive civilian collateral damage. It would run counter to the Empire's public relations image."

A few polite chuckles echoed in the silence.

"I now hand the stage over to Second Lieutenant Shirzai. The lieutenant here is an intelligence analyst and for the past recent months, represented the only Imperial presence in the system. He has been working on Ashvaka, closely monitoring the situation and working with local resistance groups. He will give us all a brief update. Shirzai, please."

The captain waved his hand in a flourishing gesture to a young bespectacled man of about twenty-one. The intelligence analyst appeared apprehensive and even nervous at addressing such a sombre crowd. He was dressed not in military fatigues but was instead clad in a torn utility vest and cargo pants that were stained with mud and dirt. A holstered pistol hung loosely from his belt. Despite the grime and weapon, he very much looked like an earnest student presenting his report to class.

"Thank you, sir," muttered Shirzai awkwardly. "My analysis reveals that the Barzini crime syndicate has been planning contingency plans to counter any incursion by outside forces, whether Imperial or other rival syndicates. Activity has seen a spike in recent weeks, even though there is no evidence to suggest that they have forewarning of our operation."

He paused to push up his glasses, which had slipped down the bridge of his nose.

"As such, my prediction is that Task Force Jude will be facing a highly efficient fighting force, with strength levels at an optimum high.."

Shirzai rambled on for another ten minutes. All he had to report was depressing news. A few shifted uneasily at his words. When he was finally done, he shuffled away from the spotlight of eyes. The Vehemence's captain looked on at them with an expression of sympathy. He could only feel pity for the grunts, of course, being far removed from battle and pain, safely away from carnage from his orbital vantage point.

"Right then. I can only wish all of you the best of luck. Any questions?"

Only dead stares replied him.

"Very well. H Hour is approximately forty five minutes away. Mission launch code is Adeline. Dismissed."

His eyes closed he leaned against the ship, waiting for the dust off, another 30 minutes away, his helmet was under his arm and his equipment was packed and on the floor, he was smoking a cigarette, and watching the smoke wisp away.

His hands were shaking as he tried to keep his calm, and for the love of his life he focused on nothing but a black dot in his mind, hoping to stop thinking. It wasn't working. He sat down, glad he was alone, and given the chance to recover, he finished his cigarette moments later and tossed it away. and inspected his equipment for the fourth time this morning, finding something to do to distract him.

He heard the sound of the door sliding open across the hanger, (it was a big door, and even though there were a lot of people working in here it was still the loudest thing in there at the moment.) and Kami walked in. He could tell it was Kami cause he knew the way she moved in her armor.

As she approached, he stood up and saluted, his helmet replaced back on his head.

She shook her head slightly and returned it, "You of all people should know you don't need to salute me Durandal, I've no idea why do it when you do it half the time."

Durandal just smiled behind his helmet and grabbed his pack as she entered the ship. He stowed the things he would need away and walked back out, waiting for the others, and Kami came out to join him quietly.

He looked down at his gauntleted hands,felling the thickness of his fingers and shaking his head. Even though the scout armor had smaller gloves for more dexterity they still felt weird sometimes.

He looked up to see the rest of the team start to crawl in in one's and two's. Everyone looked tense, but that was normal, Durandal himself felt tense and he had seen his fair share of battles and crazy operations...

it wasn't till the crap hit the fan though, so to speak that he got his calm and everything was all good. He sighed and waited, for whatever small pre-flight prep talk Kami might give, or a signal to get on board, he wasn't sure which would happen, but he kept his eyes out.

He started to stretch a little, bending down to crack his knees and jumping slightly, to get his legs working.flexing and moving his fingers to get the blood through them, make them quick.

As part of Task Force Jude, Jester was going to be a key role, he looked over a small datapad, double checking the mission info.

The 501's infantry regiment was going to be there, or at least part of it, Echo, Delt and Fox Platoons. He had a few buddies in fox that he met in training, hadn't seen them in forever, they were said to be pretty good at their job though, Delta, he'd only heard stories about, and all were good, Fox... he knew absolutely nothing about Fox, but he was sure they would be good. They were all around the hangar, moving stuff about and getting ready for departure. He for one, was glad to have them there, even as a distraction.

He sighed, letting his shoulders finally drop in ease, and looked to Kami as the team collected near the ship.

“Ae, you may wake up now,” a sharp elbow met with her ribcage, jerking the female Sergeant to an conscious state. She stretched comfortably as she yawned before checking whether her duffelbag was still occupying the same spot where she left it on the floor next to her chair.
“Good boy,” she muttered, patting the brown leather.

“Aeos, why on Tadath, sleep during a briefing?” asked Gando who sat next to her. His fingers trailed through his raven hair, ending in a small scratch at the back of his neck. He shifted uncomfortably in the scout trooper armor as he relaxed his gaze on her face.

“Briefings is about shit,” she muttered grinning. He quirked an eyebrow at this.
“Keep casualties minimum, kill bad guys, play politics, my job is to hold a blaster in my hand and pull the trigger at some slime. Period.”  she continued flippantly.
“Yeah, your logic makes sense, but knowing those extra detail, can really add in the boost of your career,” muttered Gando. She chuckled.
“You sound like my brother, this is the reason why I'm a Sergeant, and you, First Class. Now, if you will excuse me, my squadies are gathering around,”  Aeos tossed her hand at Gando in a casual wave as she stood up and ventured herself to the Jesters.

“Hi, what goes?” she asked reaching their vicinity.
“Nah, we're just gathering around, celebrating our funeral early, Second Lieutenant Shirzai  decided we are dying, or was it the Captain The Lieutenant guy seemed a bit weak in the bones, don't he?” Hashi shook his head as he smirked.
“Ag, no matter nothings policy, we still remain replaceable to the Empire,” muttered Aeos as she made a cutting motion across Vasili's adams apple. The Private however failed to notice this, his attention diverted at one of the female Corporals from Bravo.
“Death smiles at us all. All we can do is smile back,” muttered Durandal as he entered the conversation shortly afterwards her.
“So make sure to keep that pretty teeth of yours sparkling darling,” said Vasili as he slung an arm sluggishly around her shoulder.
“Yeah Vee, check I'm smiling...at you,”  replied Aeos grasping one of his fingers between her index and thumb as he was some disgusting insect.

Eviscares rolled his eyes as he turned away from the conversation, and pretty soon everybody was heading of to their own thing. Aeos was heading of the common room assigned to Jesters. She might as well kill some time and check through Holonet for some games. Her attempt to find a good, decent game however failed miserably as only news was being aired. As soon as Luke Skywalker's face flashed momentarily across the hued screen, Aeos lost it and deactivated the viewing device.

“Aeos, get your gear, we're landing fifteen minutes, I'd like to keep you guys together now,” called Kami, as her raven head poked through the open door.
“Cool beans, lemme grab my bag and nifty old carbine,” replied Aeos bolting from her seat.
She was joined outside the room by Durandal, and they made their way together across the floor to where the rest of Jester stood, most comfortably next to her bag. She squatted next to it, and gave it another fond pat.

Vehemence

Hangar Bay

0720Z Hours

"Any of you here screw up, I will personally shit on your corpse and mail the bodybag to your mom," warned Merrick sternly. Being the most senior soldier in the squad, she was prone to exhibit motherly behaviour in the loose sense of the word. Her stare lingered on Vasili.

"And as for you two," glared Merrick, her attention now fixated on Hashi and Remluf. "No playing grab-ass till we get off this planet."

Hashi grumbled and fiddled with the safety of his carbine while Remluf sighed audibly.

"Alright boys and girls," Kami spoke up, glancing at the chrono on her wrist. "Not much to say. You know your orders. Get down there and do your jobs. I'm sure we'll all be fine. Wouldn't want to see any of you dead and with a turd on your chest. Let's go."

The Jesters moved up into their waiting battle ferry. Behind them, Bravo company was getting into their own shuttles. All of them were laden with heavy packs for the long campaign ahead. There was a quiet and tense seriousness in the air beneath all the banter. They joked as much as they lied, but it never really gave them comfort. Not by a mile.

"Good morning ladies and gentlemen. My name is Ensign Stewie and I am your captain for today. I am sorry to inform you that this Lambda flight enforces a strict no smoking policy in compliance with federal regulations. Weather reports suggest we might encounter turbulence on the way down," cackled the voice of the pilot dryly as the squad settled themselves down. "Please  ensure that you buckle yourselves in. Our in flight attendants will be serving your meals shortly. As usual, the air sickness bags are located to the side of your seats. Thank you for flying Imperial Airways."

There was a general laugh.

They appreciated the black humour that was so incongruous within their context.

It was positively and refreshingly defiant.

Five minutes to take off.

Command Bridge

0728Z Hours

The Captain of the Vehemence gazed out of the viewport, his gloved hands calmly nestled in the small of his back. He was taking in Ashvaka. The planet seemed serene and tranquil, as if untouched by disturbances of violence. The situation was about to change very soon.

"Rejoice o young man in thy youth," he sighed under his breath.

"Sir. It is time," called a voice from the command pit behind him.

"Very well then, lieutenant. Commence the missions," he said without turning his back.

"All units Adeline. Repeat. Adeline."

In unison, three Sentinel-class shuttles and a single Lambda glided out of the hangar bay, bearing Task Force Jude within their compartments. The Captain watched as the ships aimed themselves at Ashvaka. He saw them slowly disappearing into the atmosphere of the planet.

Planetside

0740Z Hours

"Holy shit, this is a helluva rough ride!" laughed Hashi maniacally as the shuttle rocked violently.

Hostile missiles were exploding in the air around them and sirens were blaring. In reply, the crew worked madly to fire off chaff flares. The forward Taim & Baik twin KX5 laser cannons of the craft opened up too in retaliation, rocking it even harder as they frantically sought to silence the unfriendly greeting. It never seemed to subside though. The volume of fire only intensified as they steadily dropped thousands of feet down from the sky.

"On your feet!" barked Kami.

The Jesters rose, their fingers simultaneously flipping off the safety mechanism of their weapons. A direct hit sent them scattering and they struggled to retain balance. The shuttle's defense shield system took it in its stride, and they remained intact.

"Sixty seconds!" screamed the pilot, all traces of his former humour gone and fear palpable.

The Jesters raised their weapons, ready to face the mad rush of combat once more.

"Don't we have a war cry?" yelled Hashi over the din of it all.

"Yeah. We do," replied Remluf.

"What is it?"

"It's business time baby!"

"Touchdown! Touchdown!" screeched the pilot, signaling the time has come.

There was exhilarated whooping all around as the shuttle landed with a slam and the ramp came flying down. They rushed out and a hail of indiscriminate fire greeted them. In that instance before they faced the shooting, time seemed to slow for them, as if they were trapped in an all consuming vertigo. Their vision could be framed by the second, each frame bearing the likeness of a photograph burned into lasting memory. This ethereal moment nonetheless was a fleeting experience.

In a blink of an eye, their whole word was fast-forwarded.

"Suppressive fire!"

Half of Jester dropped to one knee while the remainder behind remained standing, allowing for the latter to fire safely over the heads of the comrades. They created a wall of blaster fire of their own. Hostile fire was coming in from all directions. They had landed smack in the middle of the airbase, and the control tower loomed ahead of them. Behind them was the command centre. The enemy was everywhere. The Jesters did their best to aim methodologically. A burst of fire cut down a Trandoshan engaging their right flank. A perfectly choreographed pivot saw them gun down three Weequay warriors who had committed themselves to a suicidal headlong charge.

Two Sentinel craft ferrying Bravo company landed near their proximity, the platoons of Stormtroopers hitting the ground running as they desperately fought to secure their landing.

The third and final shuttle however, suffered a different fate. As it made its landing run, a shoulder-launched missile impacted into the top wing. The men on the ground could only watch in open horror as the shuttle careened wildly before it crashed violently into one of the airbase's barracks. The resulting explosion knocked many off their feet.

The time then was seven forty five.

It was all going perfectly to schedule.

The battle for Objective Rhino was well underway.

“Ag, at least they went down with fireworks!” muttered Eviscares over the shower of blasterbolts that reigned from their trained hands.
At least...
Slow thoughts flashed across her stoic mind as her actions turned robotic and practiced. Another from their flank found his life splattering on the tar beneath as a bolt teared through his chest, the aroma of burned flesh flogged its way up her nose despite the protective head gear she wore.

“Guys, get cover, get moving, and get rid of them!” ordered Eviscares. Already covers was presenting itself by means  of small craters forming or pieces of buildings scattering away from its foundations due to explosions, or in the destroyed shuttle's case, exploding ships. A haze of smoke already layered the base as Aeos jumped over the limp frame of the trandoshan who walked earlier among them. She fell flat on her stomach, keeping the barrel end of her blaster at target level while using the broken tar to rest her carbine on. She stole a quick glance around her at the rest of the squad. The volley of blaster fire never ceased or paused and the expertise of the Jester stood out greatly as they kept their pace, never giving the enemy ease.

Hashi was down on one knee, he kept his head low, behind the smoldering boulder, recently born. He was fiddling with his carbine, a cigarette in his mouth, still needing to be ignited. Whatever gave him reason to cease his fire, soon dissipated as he brought his head up along with carbine and continued the onslaught from behind the boulder. While his focus remained up front, a brave chap from the enemy line ventured himself close into their vicinity, till he stood almost next Hashi. He paid dearly for his mistake however when Kami open-fired upon him. Her aim was secure and agile never hesitating about the risky presence of another squad-mate so close to the target.

The soldier's knees gave way and he fell dead next Hashi who looked down in slight surprise at this. Shrugging, he bent over the dead soldier, and lighted his cigarette with assistance from the dead soldier's slightly smoldering garments.
“Thanks for the light Kams!” he called out, throwing a thumbs-up at her. He turned around, his focus re-established on what really mattered.

Remluf, who previously had seemed rather queer to Aeos, now proved this assumption with flying colors as he picked up a rock, looked at it and cocked his head as if questioning it before he rammed it down the throat of a dying soldier lying nearby. If that wasn't enough he placed the barrel of his blaster in the bloke's mouth and pulled the trigger.  Vasili on the other hand seemed a little off-road by the action. He was merely pulling the trigger, never taking aim.

Aeos crawled on her stomach to him, leaving her carbine where she held on her own previously. Her hand, now clutched a simple hold-out pistol, deposing of a soul on her way to Vasili.
“Hey, take it easy Vee,” she called out to him and grabbed him by his collar, pulling him down.
“Sithspit, Ae. This is not a damn cockpit, if I knew this is where I'll end, I would never have gone AWOL.” muttered Vasili, sagging in his breaths, his chest heaving heavily.
“You get used to it, but Vee, when you shoot, make it count. You are not making it count, don't screw this up, and please don't hit one our guys,” muttered Aeos giving him a hard pat on the shoulder. The soldier could do nothing but nervously nod at everything she said. Aeos hesitated at leaving him, feeling pitiful, but soon these thoughts  were replaced with the raw instinct for survival of her own.

Bravo, Jester clear! Grenade!”
Something small and compact flew from Zafo's fist, it curved through the air almost gracefully as it parted through the smoke and haze disappearing in the distance shortly afterwards. A few seconds passed before a sonic boom resounded and trembled through the ground following with battle cries converting to cries of fear and death.
“Bravo,move out and clear the bunkers, keep them busy!” ordered Kami sharply as she fell flat on her stomach and rolled away from a renewed storm of blaster shots raining through the air at them.
“Jesters, move out to the communications tower!” followed Eviscares' voice soon afterwards. Several grunts of acknowledgments met his order as the Jesters changed their path and focused it on the tower up front.

Bravo was making headway. They moved forward, their expressions hidden behind the stoic expressions of their helmets, never faltering as wave after wave of enemy fire burnt into their ranks. Gleaming white bodies fell, only to be trampled seconds later as their comrades acknowledged their sacrifice by gaining another meter of enemy soil. Kami felt the barest flash of sympathy for the men they advanced upon, until drawn back to reality by a stream of blaster fire that swept dangerously close by her head.

“Son of a bitch.” Kami swept her rifle around and shot the offending enemy mercenary, silently berating herself for losing attention for even the slightest moment. In a firestorm, a lot of people could die in the space of a second, and she had no wish to join the trail of corpses that was quickly on the rise about her.

The communications tower rose before Jester as they continued to advance, an unimpressive building that belied the importance of its existence. Zafo reached the door first, gunning down a pair of Rodians taking pot shots from the doorway without breaking his stride.  Kami followed on his heels as they moved into the room beyond, quickly taking stock of the interior of the tower. She gestured to Durandal and Vasili, “You two hold the doorway. I don’t want to get stuck in here.”

She glanced at the small diagram showing the tower layout on her left, noting the main communications room and its corresponding level, then somewhat wistfully at the lifts nearby. Resisting the urge to sigh, Kami turned and booted open the small door to her left, “Stairs. Quickly.”

The remaining members of Jester moved past as she took a step back, bringing up the rear as they moved quickly up the six flights of stairs to the top of the tower. Blaster fire greeted them as they reached their destination, raining down from above in a deadly shower.

“Thank god for spares,” Another grenade flew free of Zafo’s hand, rebounding off the ceiling and into the narrow corridor in which the mercenaries were located. There was a short lived stream of curses before the landing above shook with the force of the explosion. Hashi shouldered forward before the smoke cleared, mercifully ending a still burning mercenary’s life with a shot to the head as he went.

Kami allowed herself a brief glance again at her chrono as she trailed Remluf. They had bare minutes to secure the comm tower and move to the command center and hangar, and there was still a hell of a lot of the enemy to kill before they got there.

Crazy bastard
Aeos could only imagine the child-like grin that would now grace Remluf's face beneath that expressionless mask. He took to the mission, like a farmer would to slaughtering his sheep.

“Lets move Jesters, running out of time!” called Kami taking the lead from Remluf. They moved through the corridor systematically, breaking down all resistance, in a haze of practiced tactics and battle smoke lingering about the narrow space of their path. Aeos, alongside Eviscares covered the rear ends of Jesters, always keeping the barrel ends of their carbines  in the direction they just came from while the rest cleaned up front. Something petite and round caught Aeos'  eyes trailing through the air in a very familiar curve from the direction they were covering.

“Jesters, incoming boom! Move!” she hollered as she grabbed Eviscares by the little fabric that served as a collar. The grenade sped neatly in her direction, and with little gathered wits, Aeos let go of the Sergeant and waited it in with her carbine. She failed to hear the sound of the two objects meeting above the symphony of blaster fire  reigning up front. She swung her carbine forward, tipping the weapon and using it as a bat to throw the grenade off-course back in the direction it originated from through the smoke. The explosive however triggered in mid-air throwing both the Jesters and the source of the grenade on their backs.

“On your feet! We're not on vacation!” ordered Merrick sharply, the first alongside Kami to recover and continue their assault with their backs pressed against the steel plated walls of the corridor.  Eviscares and Aeos, however, took a bit more time recovering since they were closest to it.

“Come crazy girl, up on your feet,” she heard a male voice muttering, a strong grip pulling her on her feet. Her head felt thick yet light at the same time, bloated. Shaking the stars away, Aeos stumbled to her feet. Eviscares dropped his grip on her arms as she got up. He on the other hand was already sending a grenade back at the small group that managed to regroup at the back.
“Well that should sort Jester's ass for the moment,” he called to Aeos who was still trying to get rid of the webs clouding her focus.

“Kams, how does it look up front!”
“Busy, keep tidy at the back!”
“Roger that Sarge,”

“Aeos, get it together,” ordered Eviscares, both of them knew that if she failed to compose herself in time, she would pay dearly with her life.
“You just keep doing your job,” she mumbled, holding her carbine limply as she leaned against the cool steel, while keeping the barrel end where she suspected more enemy fire would start. Miraculously, with assistance from Eviscares covering her life as well as the ass for Jester, Aeos managed to find time to recuperate and shake her head clear. They were covering ground fast as Jester created a bloodbath, and finally it came down to end of their journey in this particular building.

“Guys, let's get those doors down, we need to get this place secured under two minutes!” ordered Eviscares sharply as Remluf ran up to the door, banging his fists angrily against the doors that would hand them entrance to their objective. The Jesters took no time setting small explosive yet powerful explosions, tightly packed on each other against the sides of the doors. Aeos had a small suspicion that these explosives were a small concoction of Merrick as she called out the orders, setting it up in a rather queer manner, different from what she was taught in basic.

“Aeos, drag Rem's butt away from here, he fails to see the difference between ice cream and a explosion,” ordered Hashi who was lighting up yet another cigarette, pushing the Private at her. It took Aeos a while, but at last she managed to get soldier away from the door, convincing him  that the piece of rubble she held in her hand, was in fact a rock. It didn't take Aeos long to figure out more or less what Remluf was capable of, and what he was not capable of, and he seemed to be incapable of logical thinking, though he proved himself to be a genius in the art of slaughtering. Noticing everybody taking a few big paces back, Aeos braced herself for the explosion to follow. It was big, yet small enough not to touch the Jesters who didn't hesitate, or wait for the smoke to clear as they stormed the cleared entrance of the Comm Tower.

Jester Squad

"Frag out!" hollered Eviscares as he kicked the door down and forcefully flung a grenade in. Jester had rapidly cleared the flights of stairs leading up to the final level of the communications tower. The shrapnel evidently tore into living flesh as shrill cries could be heard from within.

"Coming in left!" called out Hashi as he stormed in, his carbine up to his shoulder. His weapon sights immediately aligned with a large Wookie whose leg was a bloody massive stump. Pumping a few shots finished the beast, who snarled before his final breath.

"Next man in, right!" shouted Hashi again.

"Coming in, right!" replied Remluf who fanned in behind him immediately. Two bursts of fire eliminated two surviving mercenaries, a Bothan and a Devaronian who had shielded themselves behind an overturned desk.

"Clear!" signalled Eviscares to Kami, who was standing fast with the rest of the squad.

The Jesters found themselves in the midst of charred computer stations and scorching flesh. Kami focused out the windows. They now had a bird's eye view of the firefights raging below them. The squads of Bravo company were desperately trying to eliminate the bunkers but fire from the guard towers and the e-web emplacements were suppressing them such that advancing was an impossible feat. Already, medics were dragging their wounded comrades back into covers. The casualty toll was mounting by the minute.

"Hashi, get on your radio. Call in the bombers to get rid of those towers," ordered Kami.

"Roger that boss," replied Hashi as his free hand grasped for the headset of the Omninode comms set he was lugging on his back. He was appointed as their provisional signal specialist seeing how the squad did not had a dedicated comms technician.

Hog 71

Circling high above at ten thousand feet and a mile out from Objective Rhino, Lieutenant Commander Dak Wynn of Warthog Squadron was leading his flight of Scimitar assault bombers over the desert landscapes of Ashvaka. Rural villages, oases in a wasteland of sand and rock, engulfed his view from the cockpit.

"Hog 71, this is Jester squad. Task Force Jude under heavy suppressive fire. They got us pinned down. Request bombing run over," radioed in the voice of Sergeant First Class Hashi from the comlink.

"Copy that Jester. It's a case of extreme danger close down there though," replied Wynn hesitantly. "We don't wanna risk any blue on blue here."

"They're cutting us to pieces down here. We need those guard towers taken out. Bomb those sons of bitches to hell. Do it!" answered Hashi tersely.

"Get me coordinates," gritted Wynn.

"Roger. Six four niner. Four Zero two. Danger close. It's our call."

"Affirmative, standby," Wynn replied, nodding to his bombardier beside him before getting back on the comlink.

"Hang tough down there you damn grunts. Hog 71, first call of the day. Echelon formation and pass on zero niner. Lock on my target. Expend two stacks of concussion missiles."

Two more Scimitars formed up on either side of Wynn's craft.

"Coming down on descent heading one two zero. Do you have visual contact?" checked Wynn.

"Affirmative. One mile, very low," confirmed his wingman.

"Copy that. Commencing bombing run."

Bravo Company

"Garcia, get your fucking head down you twat!" spat Sergeant First Class Gando as he yanked the novice trooper and dragged him down into the dirt.

Chaos raged around him. Already, his platoon had suffered three killed and three times that number injured trying to force the enemy from two armoured bunkers. He was witness to the spectacle of horror in the immediate stages of the assault when he saw that Sentinel shuttle crash. The searing heat of the explosion charred the metal of the shuttle from an immaculate white to a crisp black. He had led his squad to the crash site in hopes of evacuating survivors but there were none. Forty men wiped out at a glance. The armour of the Stormtroopers melted into a grotesque fusion with human flesh. Moments like these did not form a feature in recruitment ads.

He spared a moment to turn an upward glance at the comms tower. Blaster fire had erupted within the confines of the tall building earlier. By now, Jester Squad should have secured that objective.

"Peconte, I want your T-21 fixed on that e-web!" yelled Gando, swinging an arm down to indicate direction. "Left flank, fifty yards. Fire!"

Long bursts of deadly red darts erupted from the heavy blaster rifle of the young Private Peconte. Gando meanwhile had turned to the rest of his squad. They were largely green to combat, and they cowered at their virgin experience.

"Men, you're having your cherries popped here. Nothing like a good rod up your assholes to get the blood going," remarked Gando grimly. "Time to let your training take over. Alpha team, support Peconte with your fire. Rest of you boys, on me."

"Where the hell to?" one inquired, his voice trembling.

"We're gonna flank and drop into that bunker. Standard fire and maneuver boys. Hooah!"

Emboldened by the rough and ready leadership of the inspirational Gando, they rose to follow their squad leader to the gates of hell. Just as they were about to move out though, a single piercing shot thundered. Gando fell to his knees, clutching his neck. Blood was flowing freely from it, staining the pure white of his armour. The E-11 he had been grasping slipped out of his hand and fell to a thud, kicking up dust.

Black dots seemed to dance before his eyes. He was distantly aware of his boys screaming his name and his arms being dragged from under him as they desperately tried to drag his stricken body back to cover. The world was going gray and the cacophony of battle murmured down to obscure background noise. The last thing he saw was the shadow of Lieutenant Commander Wynn's Scimitar assault bomber streaking above him. Oblong objects jettisoned from the racks of the Scimitar and streaked towards the guard towers before colliding with the strucutres, sending down a rain of metal and fire.

"Hell of a shit place to die," croaked Gando.

The white of his eyes finally glossed over and his body finally came to a complete still.

“Now what?” Remluf held his helmet firmly by both hands, his carbine slung over his shoulder as they gazed through the shattered windows of the Comm Tower. Up ahead flew the air support, creating a beautiful scenery of war, completing the picture perfectly for battle.
“Hold on Rem, message coming through,” muttered Kami bring her Comm-Link to her face.
“This Senior Sergeant Frytz, ASL for Bravo, we lost Gando,”
All those who paid attention to this message could hear the strain of hate, regret and anger vibrate in the man's voice as he broke the news to Kami.
“Keep strong Frytz, we'l give the send-off he deserves. Jester is about to head for the Command Center, what's your status?”
Aeos turned away from the conversation and walked about the room, waiting for her Squad-Leader to finish. Hashi was down on his knees, searching the burned body of a technician.
“Looking for some smokes?” she asked dully as she took off her helmet.
Hashi straightened his posture at the sound of someone addressing him.
“Oh, tis you,” he muttered recognizing her. He stooped back down to the dead trooper. His seemingly futile search was rewarded as a pack of cigarettes made its appearance in his hand. He checked behind his back, and making sure Merrick didn't notice him, he emptied one of his ammunition pouches at his side and replaced it with the cigarettes

“Somehow she always knows though,” he muttered flippantly as he stood up and allowed himself the comfort of a stretch.
“Guys, come lets move!” called Kami's voice strong in the air. Hashi grabbed the one loose strap that hung from the communication device on his back and secured it tightly on it's proper place.  Another cigarette hung limply from his lips, and as they started gathering towards the door he kept patting himself on various spaces and pouches for where he might have placed his zippo. Shaking her head, Aeos forced her legs into the sprinting pace Kami up front has set.

Off they went down the same flight of stairs, remnants of their destruction still dying, or already dead.
“You boys okay?” asked Kami giving Vasili a pat on the shoulder. The trooper gave a confident nod as he stepped to the back to join  Aeos, with Durandal short his tail.
“Lets give them some hell baby,” called Remluf giddily out as he clutched his carbine close to his chest, his helmet forgotten upstairs.
Hashi killed the little fire of his zippo and stashed it in a random pocket.
“Now I'm ready, lets go people,”

"It's more personal ain't it?" grinned Hashi as he took a quick drag on his cigarette. "From the ground level."

"Definitely so," nodded Aeos.

"You're adapting well, sweetheart!" said Hashi as he stood up and took aim at an offending sharpshooter perched on the roof of the command centre. He missed wildly and slunk back down into cover before the sniper could zero in on him.

"Damn," he muttered.

"Nice going, marksman," cackled Vasili.

"Shut up, asshole," grunted Hashi. His fingers trembled as he inhaled once more on the cigarette that was perennially sandwiched between his fingers. A gun in one hand, a smoke in the other.

Jester Squad was hunkered down behind a low row of crates that served as their provisional defensive position. Twenty yards ahead of them lay the command centre, a drab low-lying building of four floors coloured a drab tan. Snipers and men armed with repeaters were stationed at the roof, severely restricting movement. For now, sprinting across the whole of the twenty yards of open ground meant certain death. Bravo company was occupied with their own problems south of them. It was a delicate tactical situation.

Remluf suddenly rose to his full height and began a thrusting  motion with his crotch at the enemy. There was a stunned silence that seemed to stretch into eternity as both sides attempted in shocked awe to react to this new development.

"My ding-a-ling, my ding-a-ling, I want you to play with my ding-a-ling!" he sang to a suddenly quiet battlefield.

A tackle by Eviscares sent the crazy man tumbling down. Eviscares raised his fist and was on the verge of punching Remluf before he sighed and relented. It was too much effort to restrain him now. Perhaps they will all be better off if he was killed, whether by enemy fire or by their own. The enemy at that point had recovered their senses from the incongruous spectacle and returned fire indiscriminately. Remluf's actions, admittedly, served to lift their morale for the moment though dragging them further in lethal danger.

"Here's the plan, squad. Three Fs. Fix, flank and finish," explained Kami after the chuckling subsided. "Eviscares, I want you, Hashi and Durandal as a fireteam to fix the building with suppressive fire. Merrick, stay with them and provide sniper fire. The rest of you, on me. We're going to locate an alternate entry point."

"You mean a back door?" asked Vasili.

"Yes. And I know some of you just love going in by the back," smirked Kami. "Weapons and ammo only. Drop all your other crap."

Eviscares and his men readied themselves to take up positions.

"Ready? Go!" Kami grunted.

She popped a smoke grenade into the open space in front of them. There was a hiss as the grenade landed. Soon after, the entire ground was enveloped in a dense gray fog of war. The Jesters assigned to assault the building rose and started to sprint into the misty haze in a wedge formation. Kami formed the tip of the wedge and the remaining four fanned out behind her.

"Covering fire!" shouted Eviscares.

The rifles of his fireteam opened up in a blaze of fury at the command centre, targeting shadowy shapes in windows and at the roof. Their enfilading fire protected the movement of the rest of the squad who had dashed across deftly and were now flanking the eastern end of the building. The precise fire of Merrick shifted from target to target, carefully and methodologically.

It was beautiful to see the gray smoke contrast with the pink mist of blood spraying gently from the heads of shot enemies.

Grekar was not happy.

Charged with the frequently tedious task of keeping Barzini’s mercenary forces from each others throats, he had now been awoken from a relatively sound sleep by the news that Imperials were assaulting his airbase. And if there was one thing Grekar hated more than his command, it was Imperials.

He roared in fury as one of his subordinates, a twitchy human male with a foul odour, reported that a number of guard towers had been taken out by Tie Bombers. Resisting the urge to tear out his throat, Grekar slammed a clawed fist down on the nearest console, “Contact Barzini. This has gotten out of control, we’ll need his help.”

“Uh…we can’t Grek,” his subordinate responded, his fear clearly evident in his eyes, “They’ve taken the communications tower.”

Grekar hissed, lashing out with his right hand and slashing deep into the man’s unprotected chest. Claw tore easily through bone and sinew, the human’s warm blood spilling down and over his scales as the subordinate twitched violently in his death throes. The mercenaries standing about the Transdoshan commander stilled, watching silently as Grekar straightened and pulled his soaking arm free of his kill.

“No more failure,” He snarled, his lips drawing back over his teeth. He turned to his most senior ranking captain, “Turn the tide or I’ll personally skin you.”

The captain regarded him calmly; threats were as much a part of a mercenary’s life as killing, before responding “What will you be doing?”

“Finding the men who are doing the real damage,” Grekar growled back, slinging a large rifle over his shoulder.

He turned to the various aliens standing calmly at the rear of the room, all of whom were clad in a uniform dark armor that contrasted starkly with the mottled assortment worn by the rest of the mercenaries in the main command room, “Come, we hunt.”

Without waiting to see if his men followed in his wake, Grekar pulled in a deep breath that tasted of smoke and death, and swept from the room.

Remluf ran far ahead of the rest of the squad, his two pistols at the ready.  He turned one corner and saw four enemies.  Without thinking, he leaped through the air and opened fire.  Before he hit the ground all four of the men targeting him had smoking holes through their head.  He rolled gracefully to his feet and continued searching for more prey.

Before him lay a doorway.  Remluf knew what was on the other side, and gave a wicked grin.  He removed a flash grenade from his belt and rolled it through the door.  The grenade went off and Remluf rolled through.  He opened fire on the group of men that were set up in defensive positions around him.  It was like everything was in slow motion.  Bodies were falling left and right with well placed shots that always found their mark.

Time stood still as Remluf killed person after person.  The smoke finally settled with bodies lying in heaps on the floor.  Remluf checked his pistols and began walking back towards the rest of his squad.  He suddenly turned and pointed his pistol at the last remaining life form in the room.  After he focused on who it was, he slowly lowered his pistol and took off his helmet.

Without saying a word he strode over to the beautiful female twi'lek and grabbed her around the waist.  "Give me some sugar, baby," he said as he leaned in to kiss her.

*SLAP*

Remluf looked around dazed, then his eyes focused on Kami.  "Why did you hit me?" he asked, incredulous.

"Stop zoning out, we have a mission," Kami said to him.  "Come on, follow me."

Remluf let out a small sigh and followed his squad leader.

Kami dragged a reluctant Remluf along with one hand, pulling him along the corridor leading from the small entrance on the eastern side of the command center in which Jester had entered. Aeos and Zafo were on point before her, while Vasili trailed casually along in her wake, his helmet dangling from his belt and his infernal aviators back on his face. Despite her personal knowledge on how effective her ragtag squad was in combat, Kami allowed herself a brief shake of her head at the bizarreness of it all.

“Incoming!”

Aeos’s shout sounded bare seconds before a fresh wave of blaster fire streamed down the hallway towards Jester, directed by the mercenaries they had been attempting to circle around and flank. Cursing their sense to employ men to cover their rear, Kami shoved Remluf down and to the left into the meager cover provided by a doorway. Squeezing off a couple of wild shots with her blaster, she threw her back to the wall, quickly taking in the position of her squad and the relative advantage of the mercenaries further ahead. She briefly considered doubling back; only to discard the idea at the thought of the rest of Jester becoming entrapped the longer that they held their defensive position.

Gritting her teeth beneath her helmet, she popped out from behind cover, her rifle steady in her grip, “Advance!”

Jester moved as one, all five soldiers standing tall despite the deadly storm flying erratically about them. They advanced steadily, laying down a stream of fire that seemed lacking in volume, yet lethal in accuracy. Kami took a blaster shot to her upper chest as she gunned down two mercenaries, the force of the bolt knocking her backwards into Vasili. The private steadied her with one hand, shouting out a stream of insults at Barzini’s men as he continued to push forward with his comrades.

Then abruptly… it was quiet.

Zafo turned to Kami, helping Vasili lower her momentarily to the ground. She glanced down at the charred mark on her breastplace, wincing at the intense heat now burning into her chest.

“Goddam lucky Kams,” Zafo let out a low whistle, “That should have been a killing shot.”

“I’m alright,” Kami pulled in a painful breath, “We need to keep moving.”

Zafo nodded, clasping his squad leaders hand and pulling her to her feet. Kami steadied herself, then refusing to allow herself reprieve, strode ahead to take Aeos’s place at the head of the squad. They pressed on over the remains of the mercenaries, branching out into a larger room which allowed access to the roof. Flicking a grenade free from her belt, Kami moved over to the nearest ladder, casting it up and through the small opening at the top. A mercenary’s head appeared above them, his eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the still living troopers, only to have the grenade smack him squarely in the forehead.

Kami heard Remluf giggle before the grenade blew, disintegrating the man and any of his companions that had been unlucky enough to be standing close enough to the impact. She was up and over the ladder in seconds, Aeos at her shoulder, and together the both of them quickly dispatched snipers still stunned from the blast. Abruptly the rest of Jester were there, calmly gunning down mercenaries who wildly attempted to swing repeaters about to take in the new threat. One mercenary managed to line up Vasili in his sights only to abruptly pitch forward, blood pouring from the neat hole now in his neck. Silently praising Merrick for her accuracy, Kami personally finished off the last of the enemy, before activating her comm. to the rest of the squad, “Get up her guys, coast is clear.”

There was a brief pause, before Merrick responded, an edge of alarm in her voice “You have visitors.”

Kami spun on her heel, her warning dying in her throat as dark clad mercenaries swarmed up the ladder behind Jester. She saw Zafo stumble and fall as a large Whipid bowled him off his feet, taking a blaster bolt to his hairy chest as he did so. The alien shrieked, pitching forwards and slamming into Kami at full force. The world spun fiercely above her as she hit concrete, her helmet cracking as her head snapped back. Rolling free of the giant creatures dying mass, she made to get to her feet, wildly looking for the rest of her squad only to have a powerfully built Transdoshan step forward. The lizard man’s teeth bared in a predatory smile before he slammed her rifle from her grip, taking full advantage of Kami’s disorientation to slam a clawed fist into the side of her head.

The sky spun, red tingeing the corner of her vision as Kami went down again…her world abruptly turning to black.

Hashi pumped shots into the chests of a Bothan and a Gamorrean who  had committed themselves to charging headlong into his line of fire. They fell soon after. His attackers were certainly not lacking in bravado but were rather limited in the intelligence department. Just as he had finished dealing with that particular threat, another shadow emerged to his flank, carrying a large object on his shoulders. Before Hashi could react to the danger, the new enemy, a human male, had knelt and fired a round from his PLX-2 missile launcher.

"Shit," was all Hashi could bear to mouth.

He could almost see the round twirling straight at him. It dipped at the last second and landed five yards to his front, blowing him off his feet with an explosion that left him slipping into blackness. A cloud of dust settled on him. There was a sharp ringing in his hears gradually growing fainter. The taste of blood streaking down his face was warm on his lips.

As he prepared to sleep, his shoulders were roughly shaken.

"Dude, you okay man?" cried out an indiscernible voice.

Someone was unbuckling his scout trooper helmet.

The blackness seemed to fade into gray and back into the harsh sunlight of the cruel morning.

"You're one ugly son of a bitch now," exclaimed Eviscares as he flung the helmet aside. "But you're still alive. Durandal! Keep pouring fire at them!"

The remark was well-deserved. Hashi's face was a bloody mess with shrapnel lodged between his left eye and part of his left ear cut off. Blood was flowing profusely from his nostrils and eye sockets. He could still the hot metal of the shrapnel burning skin and flesh. He raised a hand to touch what remained of his face. His fingers peeled off black burnt skin that crumbled in his palm.

"I'm cutting the balls off the bitch who did this to me," said Hashi calmly.

"He's already dead," gestured Merrick to a man who laid in between the open ground of the command centre and their position. "I got him in the head for you Hash."

"We need to get moving. Kami is in trouble," shouted Eviscares. "Move out!"

They rushed out from their cover position behind the crates and dashed into the open, evading potshots along the way. By now, the enemy defenses had been reduced by their suppressive firing. Hashi zig-zagged towards the corpse who had gained his offense and personal enmity. As the rest of his fireteam moved on ahead of him towards the command centre to regroup, he took thirty seconds to whip out a vibroknife and emasculate the dead man. The blood as a result of the botched castration was mired with black pus and white semen. Thankfully, his hands were shielded by gloves for the dirty job.

Hashi unceremoniously stuffed the decapitated scrotum into the man's open mouth, which was gaped in frozen horror to greet death. A single red dot was at the centre of the man's forehead where Merrick had put a clean round through. The thin, fragile skin of the scrotum sack tore at Hashi's rough handling and the testicles slipped down the throat of their very owner. As a final act, Hashi wiped his gloved hands on the cheeks of the deceased to remove the stains of the bodily fluid.

"God. I hate this place," commented Hashi.

He raced to catch up with his comrades.

Fireteam Alpha darted along the yard trying to reach the Command center for relieving Fireteam Beta.
The sprint they made provided some protection against the unaimed Blaster fire, but it was only a question of time until someone got hit. They had already torn out quite a chunk of the defenders force and by now the repeaters were silenced.

“Keep your cool! Keep your cool!”, Evis ordered himself, in a futile attempt to quell the roaring emotions inside. Hashi was badly wounded and would need medical attention anytime soon. Fireteam Beta was out of sight on the building and Kamis signal had just blacked out, meaning that she was either unconscious or dead. Then it occurred to him. Kami was out. That was where he came in.

“Ok Jester Squad, I'm taking command as of now. Merr, Duran I need you to keep them busy.”, he commanded as calm as he could over the com, his voice still shaking despite his efforts.

“Understood, Smoke out!”, Duran answered, throwing himself into the first cover that came in sight, the body of the dead Gamorrean, and tossing several smoke grenades towards the enemy lines. Merrick on the other hand didn't answer at all, but just simply dropped to the floor and started shooting away.

They quickly made it around the command center and allowed them one second of rest before going in.
“Hashi, as soon as we are in, you get yourself to a vantage point and cover this exit. I don't want to have those mercenaries in my back once I get up the roof.”, he said now a bit more composed, as there was finally something like a plan forming in his mind.

Brief nods were every answer he got and then Hashi counted down from three with his fingers. As he clenched his fist the two of them went in, letting loose a hail of blaster fire. The three mercenaries in the room went down like flies, not being prepared for another attack from this direction.
Evis didn't feel too bad about shooting them in the back. Inside him the anger was rising and there were countless other ideas he had about what to do with those mercs instead of simply shooting them. Hashi took up his position position overlooking the door behind a flipped over desk and gave him a thumbs up.

By protocol he shouldn't be going up into the unknown alone, seeing that he was the commanding officer of Jester at the moment, but the concerns about Kami simply made him black out on this. He  ran through the corridors, following the trail of corpses Beta had left behind while on the way to their roof. Here and there was a mercenary who was either catching a breath or running towards the roof as well. Either way they were disposed of in a brutally efficient matter, either with a shot to the head or simply a volley of shots into the back by Evis.

“It's getting hot in here, we're retreating into the building.”, Merrick announced over the com, seeing as their distraction had served their purpose.

Finally the ladder to the roof came in mind, Evis dropped carbine to the ground and pracitcally flew up. When he got out on the roof he couldn't help but be taken in by the scene below them. He could see the  remains of Bravo Company battling it out with the original owners of this airfield and next to the command center he saw Merrick and Duran running for their lives towards the back door. On the roof Aeos, Vasilli and Remluf were in hand to hand combat and even for the rookies it looked quite good. Remluf seemingly had snapped into battlemode again and was taking on three enemies at once. Taunting them in one second with obscene gestures just to put a fist into their face in the next.

Then he saw Kami, she was on the ground, her helmet splintered and Evis couldn't tell how severely the injury was. Above her knelt the Trandoshan who had just pulled a Vibroknive out of his pocket and seemed to be thinking about how he could best make the last second of her life most painful.

Evis grabbed the first thing that he got hold of on his belt and threw it at the Trandoshan. It happened to have been his canteen, and even though it didn't really hurt the Reptiloid, it sure did bring his attention towards the enraged Stormtrooper. The alien got to his feet again and fully turned around to take on this new prey. Eviscares lodged into a full sprint again, determined to tackle the Trandoshan of the roof. To his surprise as he crashed into the massive alien it managed to hold onto him and drag him above the edge as well.

”Sithspawn!”, was the last thing the young Sergeant managed to think before they hit the ground and all air got forced out of his lungs. The Trandoshan had clearly cushioned his fall and taken most of the force of the impact, but his movement suggested that he was still able to put up a fight. Evis rolled of him and got back to his feet, still feeling a bit dizzy and watched in reluctant respect as the mercenary got up as well, still sporting his damn grin. Somehow a fuse in Evis head burnt out as he had to see that grin again and with a yell he was once again in range, before his enemy could react.
“Why don't you just die?!” he shouted, reaching for the aliens head with his cybernetic arm and then ramming into the wall as hard as he could. With a sickening splat the mercs head transformed into something that more resembled a melon dropped from 10 metres height than the remains of head.

And to his own disgust Eviscares didn't only feel satisfied, he felt extremely pleased with his 'work'.

“Kams?”

The voice seemed to drift in from all sides, strangely familiar despite the constant ringing in her ears.

“Kams, can you hear me?”

She opened her eyes. Pain exploded in the back of her head at the sudden movement, causing a cry of pain to rise unbidden from deep within her chest.  The smoky sky above her wavered, then stilled, the concerned face hovering over her slowly coming into focus.

“Evis?” Kami’s voice emerged as a croak as she recognized her ASL.

“You got smacked pretty damn hard,” Eviscares pushed dark bangs back from Kami’s temple in a familiar gesture, his gaze focused on her forehead, “The helmet took most of the blow, but you’ll need stitches. The bleeding has only just begun to slow.”

Abruptly, the memory of the assault flashed to the forefront of her mind. She sat up suddenly, provoking another wave of intense pain from the searing wound of her head. Leaning heavily on Evis, Kami doubled over, heaving up the contents of her stomach on the concrete.

“Geezus Kami, stay still for three seconds would you!” Merrick’s voice pierced through the pain, and suddenly hands were on her head, probing her wound. Red flashed before Kami’s eyes once again, seemingly causing the solid concrete beneath her hands to heave.

“It looks pretty bad,” Merrick’s voice again, cutting through the fog, “We’ll need to bind it.”

“Evis,” Kami closed her eyes briefly, mentally willing the pain to still for a moment. Flicking her green eyes back open, she clasped at Eviscares chestplate, pulling him towards her with a surprising degree of strength, “The others?”

“Fine Kams,” He answered, his concern for her openly displayed on his features, “Hashi and Zafo are wounded, but they’ll live.”

“Listen to me,” Kami paused as white dots threatened to obscure her vision, before forcing herself to continue, “Leave me.” Evis opened his mouth to protest, but Kami spoke over the top of him, “Clean the wound, bind it, and leave me. Take the others, and secure the command center. Then take the hanger.”

She paused again, her grip on Eviscares breastplate faltering, “Bravo is still out there. Secure the objection, you hear me? That’s an order.”

She saw Eviscares hesitate, then decline his head in affirmation. Kami opened her mouth to reassure him, to tell him that she would be alright, but she was already falling back into the comforting world of oblivion. Letting her fingers uncurl from Eviscares armor, Kami slumped forward and finally gave into her pain.

Jester Squad

Kami was evacuated from the building by Zafo and Durandal. She was out of the fight for now. Eviscares signaled for a medic from Bravo Company to attend to her injuries and ordered the rest of the squad to continue clearing the command centre. This they did with a new-found vengeance for the wounds they have been inflicted. They stormed down a hallway leading to the main operations room with Eviscares in the lead. Only a few stood in their way now, the dead and wounded littering their passage.

Bursting through into the operations room, they found a few survivors of their initial assault huddled in it. One of them, a Bith, was on the verge of raising his arms in surrender when he was gunned down. The rest of his comrades were too shocked to react and were slaughtered where they stood. The barrels of the Jesters' rifles were smoking when the killing concluded.

"Clear!" called out Hashi as he prodded a corpse with a foot.

"We have a live one!" Aeos pointed to a still moving human writhing silently. "Prisoner?"

"Not after what they did to my face," grunted Hashi. He strode over and systematically bashed the skull of the lone survivor using his carbine. As he wiped the brain tissue from his butt of his weapon, the comms set on his back cackled to life.

"Yo. Bravo has secured the bunkers and pretty much wiped out tall opposition outside," updated Hashi on the progress of their fellow Stormtroopers.

"Roger that. Tell them we're headed for the hangar soon and we'll consolidate the objectives by the next twenty minutes," affirmed Eviscares.

"Bravo, Bravo. Jester actual. We have secured the communications centre and will be proceeding to engage the last targeted objective. Standby for phase one stand down in the next half hour," spoke Hashi into the headset.

"What's the status on Kami?" inquired Merrick.

"The medic says she's in a stable condition. Just took a really hard concussion. She'll be alright in a few," answered Hashi.

"Right guys. One last rush," said Eviscares, gritting his teeth. "Check your ammo and frags. Hope you haven't run out for the final showdown."

The ferocious fighting of the past few hours in the morning had made them all run low on rounds. There were a few clips and power shells to be shared, and thermal detonators and other fragmentation grenades were looted off their fallen enemy.

Strike-Class Cruiser Vehemence

The Captain slowly poured the amber liquid of his gin into the small glass. He drank it neat and savored the warm slush of it gushing down his throat. Lighting a cigar, he inhaled on it and puffed out the smoke. It was a smooth flavour, the burning leaf emitting an aroma that sunk him into a contemplative mood. At that moment, there was a knock on the door of his personal office within his ship.

"Enter," he said.

A young ensign timidly passed through the doorway and saluted him. "I have the situation report you requested, sir."

"Well then." He tapped the ash of his desk casually onto his desk. "How is the ground assault doing?"

The ensign cleared his throat before beginning. "Bravo Company has suffered approximate thirty percent casualties, dead and wounded included. One of their shuttles was shot down by anti-air missile fire during the landing and they lost Fox platoon. Warthog Squadron has los Lieutenant Commander Dak Wynn from ground fire, too, along with another Scimitar assault bomber in his flight. Jester squad leader Platoon Sergeant Kami is also amongst the wounded."

The voice of the ensign trailed off under the widened eyes of his superior officer. The grip on the cigar trembled as the Captain spoke.

"Continue, young man."

"Despite the high casualties, the assault on Objective Rhino is proceeding with moderate success. Key buildings and structures are being seized as planned. Bravo CO reports that Jester is on the verge of concluding the assault. He estimates that the operation will be completed on schedule." He looked up from his datapad where he had been reading the report. "That is all, sir."

"Aye," sighed the Captain. "Very well. Dismissed."

As the ensign marched out of the office in relief, the Captain turned towards his personal viewport and gazed at Ashvaka. Resistance was turning out to be as solid as predicted. The intelligence reports were not understated. They were indeed facing a highly efficient fighting force. The Captain took another drag on his cigar before stubbing it out. He smiled wryly as he realized that he had forgotten that it was bad form to smoke before victory was achieved. There was still a long battle ahead.

Evis laid on top of the Command building, the battered remains of Jester next to him. They had been observing the Hangar for half an hour by now. The defenders inside held still, knowing that they were the only pocket of resistance left of objective Rhino. Around the building Bravo Company had built up a defensive ring that allowed noone inside to leave.

By now the base was bathed in sunlight and heat, the air already shimmering above the ground. Evis had taken off his helmet and was instead wearing a battered fedora that he had taken off a corpse, as well as a pair of sunglasses. Throwing away the butt of his cigarette he stood up and walked downstairs, Jester Squad closely behind him. By now they conveyed an even more bizarre impression. Everyone was either sporting his own weapons or something he had salvaged from the dead, their armor had already gotten so dusty that it was almost yellow and instead of their helmets Jester squad wore hats, bandanas or simply let their wild hair run free.

“Time to end that Samarian standoff, folks!”, Evis announced when they began walking around the Hangar in the direction of its Main Gate. From behind he could hear how his Squadmates were readying readying their weapons. Hashi upped his pace a little so that he was going next to him and pulled out a pack of Lung Blasters and held it in Evis direction.

”You want one?”, he asked still managing to pull of a smile in the mess that had been his face. The Sergeant nodded in reply, and pulled one out of the box, lighting it with a match, inhaling several times before he spoke again:”Thanks Hashi. Are you ready to repay those scumbags?” It was a rhetoric question. Of course he was. Just like the rest of Jester he was eager to repay what those mercenaries had done to them.

~~~~~
A tense tranquility had fallen over the great Hall in which Reyf was hiding out with what was left of his men. The Imperials had hit them hard in the early hours of the morning and by now had taken in the whole base with the exception of the Hanger he and his men held. He cursed. What had brought them here in the first place after all? Until now they had had quite a good life for mercenary standards in this base. But suddenly out of nowhere some Imperial remnant came and started blasting the base into pieces.
”Or maybe not into pieces...”, he thought and it took him another minute until he had realised what he had missed before. Those guys were killing his men, but they left the base intact. They had even undertaken a risky aerial landing instead of simply bombing them of this blasted rock.
He had his second bright moment for today, ”They are needing this base. And when they need it I might be able to trade my way out.”.
“Riv! Get me a white flag!”, he yelled at his aide and when his orders were executed walked towards the large broken window overlooking the assembling squad of Scouttroopers on the outside.
“I know what you want Imperials, and I must inform you that I have planted explosive in this Hangar! If you don't let us leave I will blow it up. We are simply mercenaries we hold no personal grudge against you.”
[i]”What was the click just now?”
, he asked himself.
~~~~~

While the Bothan mercenary commander was still speaking Evis beheld a grenade  that someone had thrown from behind. It made its way in a beautiful arc that ended inside the large window and approximately between the Bothans feet. The canine alien finished his sentence and it seemed as if he hadn't notice what had just come in through the window. In one second he looked at them with a puzzled expressen, in the next he got engulfed by an explosion.

As Evis looked over his shoulder he could see Remluf shrugging who then said in a childish voice:”I hate it when they lie... lying is evil...” The rest of the Squad shrugged as well and then they made their way towards the hangar doors. On Evis signal a heavy weapons trooper opened fire upon the door with his PLX-2 and blasted it right out of its hinges. Jester fell into a sprint and made its way inside the large hall.

“Time to kick rump”, Aeos said before the carnage began.

~~~~~
Time: 1230Z Hours
Eviscares was standing in the makeshift commando central that elements of bravo had erected in the last few hours. These piled boxes and antennas would serve as the HQ of the entire operation until the  real command center was once more in a working status.
“This is commanding officer Sergeant Eviscares, Vehemence can you hear me?”
“This is Vehemence, we hear you loud and clear. Deliver your sitrep now.”
“Objective Rhino is secured. I repeat, Objective Rhino is secured. We we are ready to fortify this as a base of operations. Deployment of additional resources is safe.”
“Very good Sergeant.”, the officer on board the cruiser replied and then asked the question that Evis had feared. “How high is the casualty rate, Sergeant?”
“Too high”, was everything he could answer before putting down the com and walking over to the barracks that were now Jesters home. Out front he saw Vasilli and Aeos playing some kind of dice game with Remluf who was absolutely clueless about the rules. Merrick had wandered off to find some food for the squad in an almost spooky way of motherliness. When Evis headed inside he could see the four wounded members of Jester Squad lying on the beds that were now theirs but had belonged to men now dead not even 6 hours ago.
He sighed, pulled out another smoke, lit it and then let himself drop behind the only desk that stood inside of the barracks. It was time for him to go through the next orders. Hopefully Kami would be back on the track soon.
“So...how was it?”
“How was what?”
“Your first ground mission, silly!”
Aeos placed a fist square on Vasili's left bicep as he blinked at her. Well, one could only asume he blinked since his sight was constantly kept under a neat pair of shades.
“Fine, just as you are baby,” he said cockily as his hand ran through his caked hair.
“I do believe you and Rem is related,” muttered Aeos dryly as Remluf came running back to them. Clutched in his fist, was the dice he threw away in child-like anger as he failed to grasp the concept of the game they were trying to teach him.
Vasili's mouth drop in feint shock as Aeos turned her back on him and ventured herself across the floor where some of the other Jesters were.
“Hashi...I'm bored...”
Hashi simply raised an eyebrow at the young female in front of him.
“Don't you have a gun to clean....or shoot someone?” he muttered in a mumble, his speech slightly limited by the cigarette fumbling between his lips as he tried to light it up in the breeze that passed through the open windows and gaps of the building.
Aeos yawned, ignoring the cloud of smoke that suddenly exploded her way as Hashi managed success with his zippo.  A thick crimson substance that glistened in the light across Hashi's glove caught her eye.
“Hashi, your arm.”
“Baby, relax...”
“Fuck Hashi,” laughed Aeos as she took his arm in her own small hand for closer inspection.
“You mind girl? Trying to smoke here in style...”
“Hashi, please get it looked at, this blood is way to thick...”
“Yeah, yeah,”
Hashi scurried off as soon as he could, forcing Aeos to look for an alternative time-passer. Finding none she turned back to Vasili and Remluf with a sigh.
The two morons of this squad, and I'm stuck with them,
Eviscares was off with arrangements due to Kami being out. The rest was also suffering from some form of injury that required attention. For some reason, the two oddballs which was Remluf and Vasili, managed to get by without losing something which surprised Aeos.
If only Vasili could grow up... she thought heading back to them. At the last minute however, Aeos changed her mind set it on exploring her surroundings a bit.
It was a decent set-up the bastards had as she ventured through the barracks. Nice and cozy. Rich. A small door at the back drew her curiosity. She closed in on it. Her hand curled around the steel handle which allowed the mechanism to lock it. Placing weight forward on the door, Aeos opened it and pleasant sun beams met her face along with the smell of burned flesh and spilled blood.
It was a small exit from the barracks into a very narrow alley filled with a few, yet rather large holders which Aeos only assumed was trash cans. Suddenly, however, her danger senses went off like an alarm sniffing fire.
Aeos spun to the right, but only too late as a set piece of stone came hurling to her face, she turned again in a haste attempt to dodge it but it was too late as the small piece of concrete met with the side of her head, hard enough to knock her out.  While numb and limp, she somehow managed to pick up the sound of blaster shots and a string of curses before someone scooped her up from the ground.
Nothin' much, but I got it in!
Hey... you ok?
“What? Huh...?”
“You've quite quite the nasty bump on your head... don't worry, it doesn't take anything away from your face.”
Aeos squinted at the man speaking to her. The bright must've been painful, she had been out for hours. “You alright there, darlin'?” Vasili reiterated. “The nurse said you would be fine, but how are you doin'?”
Aeos managed to pry her eyes open more. She groaned as the light entered her brain. When she was able to look without squinting, she saw the man that was talking kneeling beside her bed.
“Ya?” Vasili grinned at her liveliness.
“V... What?”
“You don't remember, then.” He stood up and in his hand was a bottle with ribbon on it. “I borrowed this from somebody's room, I er, got you this.” Vasili held the golden bottle towards Aeos, who seemed to be lost. “It's whiskey.” Aeos still looked confused. “I still owe you from that time in the Navy. Remember?” She didn't say anything. “No...” Vasili placed it on a small table next to her bad and kneeled down again.
“You were hit by a chunk of concrete. Some freakin' injured soldiers ran out of ammo, apparently....”
Vasili watched in curiosity as Remluf tried to bite the dice the two were using. “Take it easy there, brother. Don't choke.” Remluf looked over innocently as he gnawed on the piece of plastic. Vasili shook his head, smiling, and looked around for someone to enjoy this display of insanity with him. He noticed Aeos heading towards a door alone. “Perfect,” he murmured to himself and he got up and followed her.
She stood outside, on the top landing of a small staircase. Vasili wanted to surprise her so he closed the door quietly behind him. He was about to speak up when Aeos suddenly jerked away and was met by a chunk of a heavy looking something. Vasili rushed out, grabbing the shotgun from off his back, and seeing the blood coming from Aeos, looked in the direction of the throw. Leaning on a wall was a bloody looking man, obviously someone Jester had failed to finish off. The man screamed, “Shit!”, and tried to run but fell over immediately from injury. Vasili lifted his shot gun and in retaliation fired a round at the man, who dropped. Just for reassurance this time, Vasili closed the distance and fired at the downed man. “Bastard!”
He returned to Aeos, lifted her up, and brought her to a bed to be taken care of by someone who knew anything about medicine.
“... and so here you are. And I am.”
“Ahuh...” She still seemed just a little out of it. Aeos rubbed her face, moving her hand up to the wound and touching it gently.
“Easy,” Vasili didn't want her to agitate the broken skin. He grabbed her wrist softly and brought it away from her head. “Just sleep for now. The rest of Jester's got things under control for a while. I'll be here mostly if you need me, I gotta do my part around here.”
He patted and squeezed her shoulder nearest him for a moment and nodded. Aeos gave a small nod of her own and closed her eyes.
Bravo Company
Major Otto Skorzeny was a hardened veteran of many battles. Yet, as commanding officer of Bravo company, it broke his heart to see his fallen men being carried off the scene of carnage around him in black body-bags. The airbase had been taken, but at great cost. Overhead, shuttles bearing logistical and medicals supplies for Task Force Jude were slowly descending on the small landing strip which had taken so much blood to capture. Pride was salvaged in knowing that the compound was now a key base of operations for the mission. He walked by to where the body of a deceased trooper lay. Carefully, he removed the helmet and set it gently beside the man's head. He sighed as he saw that the fallen warrior was barely out of his teenage years. Twenty perhaps, maybe even eighteen. Far too young to have his life snuffed out abruptly.
"Sir." One of his platoon commanders interrupted his silent mourning. "The defense perimeter is up. I have two squads on the south ridge set up with e-webs. Another squad is taking up security roles on the north line."
"Good job, lieutenant," answered Skorzeny, nodding his head. "What about counter-surveillance?"
"Fire teams have been sent on foot patrols to monitor for any suspicious activity. We have also established a listening post to drop in on enemy signal transmissions."
Major Skorzeny swallowed the assessment of the lieutenant. His men were tough. They quickly recovered from the loss of their brothers and engrossed themselves with the task at hand. Their job here was not finished yet, not by a long shot. They had to get back up on their feet and prepare for any contingency that might arise. Supplies were being flown in to ensure that ammunition did not get depleted, wounds were not left untreated and dead men replaced by fresh reserves.
"Issue a fragmentary order to warn all units to be on high alert for possible counter-attacks. This show ain't over yet," ordered Skorzeny tersely. "What is Jester currently doing? A third of them are down, no?"
"Jester has sent a three man patrol out to establish contact with the Peshargas resistance. There have been reports that these local forces have been roaming in the area. They'll be back for the ops briefing for phase two of the assault."
Skorzeny nodded and stared off into the desert beyond the airbase. A vast expanse of sand stretched as far as they could see into the horizon.
Jester Squad
From a bird's eye view, if indeed there were any living avians in the sky, three white pinpricks were moving across a backdrop of dust and rock.
"Just what the hell are we doing here?" grumbled Hashi as he trudged along under the weight of his rucksack. "We're in the middle of nowhere looking for a bunch of nerf herders. Plus, my stomach is upset. I have to take a shit, and I'm guessing nobody minds if I leave a present for this shithole of a planet."
"Cut the bitching," laughed Eviscares. "Besides, what are you doing here? You should be back at base licking your wounds."
"You don't say. I'm fricking stupid, that's why," said Hashi sourly. "There was some blond bombshell from the medical team attending to my tender body, for your information. I was about to have boob pie for lunch until you called me out here."
"You volunteered," countered Eviscares indignantly.
"Hold up. Movement, ten o'clock!" called out Durandal, who was on point for the patrol. "Two men. Armed. They're coming towards us."
All three men immediately swung up their carbines and pointed it in the general direction of the approaching pair. Hashi's index finger fondled the trigger guard of his carbine. The afternoon sun bore down harshly on them. A slight breeze swirled the sand around his feet. He raised his carbine up to his cheek and aligned the sights at one of the men, ready to pull the trigger if there was one wrong move. The adrenaline from a morning's worth of combat had not been flushed from his system yet and he was ready to kill again at the slightest provocation. Warm blood was still trickling down from his ghastly open facial wounds.
"That's close enough!" yelled Eviscares as they closed to within twenty yards of the Jesters. "One more step and I'll blow your balls off."
"I am Lashkar Gar! No shoot!" cried out the man, raising his arms laterally to show he meant no harm. His Basic was huskily accented and he spoke haltingly, revealing a limited command of the language. His clothing were drab desert robes designed to keep out sand. A black veil covered his mouth and the lower portion of his face. A rifle was slung across his back, and two belts of ammunition pouches criss-crossed his chest. His companion was outfitted likewise.
"Who the bloody hell cares who you are!" raged Hashi. "Drop your weapon or we'll cut you down faster than you can say awww shit!"
"I am Pesharga! Friend of Empire!" Both men unslung their rifles and bent their knees in petrified slow motion. They laid their weapons on the ground and rose back up, trembling. "No shoot! Imperial very good! I make love for Imperial! Friend of Empire!"
The three Jesters looked at each other with bemused expressions. Hashi moved forward to check them out while Eviscares and Durandal remained behind, never lifting their sights off the men. Kicking their rifles away, Hashi did a quick body search and rummaged through their pockets. He discovered several documents that were largely written in a strange alien handwriting. These men spoke Basic, but they have obviously been far removed from the rest of the galaxy for quite a while. More importantly, Hashi found a sheet bearing the Imperial logo on it.
"I think these are the guys we're looking for," said Hashi. The other two lowered their carbines and cautiously joined him. The Peshargas looked immensely relieved for finally being recognized as friendly forces. They relaxed and picked up their weapons, before breaking out what seemed to be the local variant of cigarettes and sharing it with the Jesters.
"God, this stuff is awful," coughed Hashi as he took a drag. "Tastes like rat shit. Heavy stuff."
"Alright. They're coming back to base with us," said Eviscares. "Need to get these folks debriefed by intel. It's gonna be a long walk."
The three Jesters and their two new allies started the hike back to Rhino in single file.
