Will took a step from the transport onto the shiny floor of the small docking area. It was every bit as he expected, one of the smallest hanger bays he'd seen. It had little more than enough room to house just one squadron of fighters. He looked around, but didn't see anyone. "Hey, you sure this is the right place?" Will called back into the transport.

"Absolutely, Sir. This is the exact place communication told us to land."

"Alright." Will answered, and took a few more steps into the space. "Guys, let's go, we don't want to keep the pilots from their jobs."

"Are you talking to us about those pilots that brought us here or whoever resides in this place about us?" Cyleaf asked jokingly as he too lowered himself to the floor from the transport, followed by the rest of the squadron.

The second everyone was off the ship, the transport lifted off again, to whatever destination they were headed.

So this is what it's like to feel stranded in a place with no one else. Will thought to himself. "Let's see if we can find any living souls in this place. After that, the commander of this place, assuming we find him, is going to get a hell of a complaint." Will said as he grabbed his bag from the floor and headed for the nearest exit.

Half way across, the door hissed open, and two techs ran out from behind the doors, having a hard time catching their breaths. "Sorry sir. We were..."

"No need. Just show us to our quarters and we can settle everything else later."

"Yes Sir! This way please." The techs saluted, then motioned for the pilots to follow them.

Twelve hours before

"Lieutenant Willtconq." Commander Shazam began, "Kaph Squadron has been given a new tasking order. I presume you've read it the mission parameters?"

"Yes, Sir." Will answered.

"Anything you'd like to say or ask?"

"Yes, Sir. I was wondering what kind of enemy force we might be expected to encounter while on station."

Shazam lifted an eyebrow for a second before regaining his original emotionless face. "That, we can't be sure of. You're stationed there to defend it. That's is all we can tell you at this moment. I'm just your commanding officer, not a psychic, so I can't tell you what kind or how strong the forces you might face. It could be an entire fleet, or it could be nothing. Other squadrons have been stationed on near by systems. If you need reinforcements, they will come shortly. But it is the same to be expected from you. If they call, then your order will be to reinforce as well. Understood?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Anymore questions?"

"No, Sir."

"Good, go get ready, your transport leave at 0800 hours."

Eleven hours before

"I'm sure you all know what this means." Will said to the rest of his squadron. "I have here the new orders for us..."

"Finally," Hellkite chipped in, "I was getting tired of all those sim runs."

"...For the next month."

"Does that mean we're going to be stationed onboard the Tiamut?"

"No. We'll be stationed at, well, a station. And it's quite a small station, smaller than the Tiamut." Will paused for a second to see if anyone else wanted to interrupt him with questions or comments, when none was given, he continued. "The mission detail is as follows: We will be stationed there for a month, or until further notice. Whichever comes first. The station is a small aquatic base, floating on the surface of Mortain. Our objective is to defend the station and Mortain at all costs while we're there.

"Mortain is a small planet, in a series with a number of other planets. Squadrons of fighters have been, or going to be, stationed on them. If the need comes, they will come to aid us, or we will go help them. Mortain is a mostly water covered planet. The little parts of land it offers are near the poles, and are inhabitable. Thus, the Vast Empire has constructed a small base that floats on the surface. There have been no known living species on the planet. But that could change at any time."

"Any questions?"

"Uhhh, yes, we will be flying Avengers like we have been, right?"

"No, we will not. Fighters are available at the station. You can hope that they're not just Tie fighters. Anything more than that, I don't know. Anything else? No? Then go get ready, the transport leaves at 0800 hours, which is an hour from now. The flight is going to take ten hours. So whatever you don't have to do here, take it with you."

"Why do you get to be treated like loyalty when we get bunk beds?" Dredj complained.

"Because I am royalty." Will answered with a smirk on his face.

The Squadron Commander had been given a master suit on the base, one of a few reserved for high ranking officials or important personnel. But since there was no other high ranking officer on tour, he was given the honor. Everyone else, however, was assigned to bunk beds in the barracks one floor below. It was the morning after they arrived. They all had a few hours of rest after getting off the transport, but it was clear the mere rests on rock hard bunk beds weren't enough.

"So what's it like? Being back in boot camp and all." Will asked jokingly.

"I hope it doesn't stay this way for the whole months." Cyleaf said, avoiding Will's question. "Else it's gonna get extremely boring around here."

"So you'd rather we get attacked?" Will asked, accepting the new topic. "Regardless of the enemy we might be up against?"

"Yep, better than sitting around with nothing to do."

"Well, if you want, you can start with cleaning duties." A new voice said from the doorway.

"Hello there." Will said. "You must be Commander Cherbourg."

"That would be me." Cherbourg reached out to shake Will's hands. "I am the commanding officer of this piece of metal. I am sorry for not being able to greet you last night. But whatever you need, Lieutenant Willtconq, my men will gladly provide to our best extent."

"Good. Thank you Commander. I have nothing but one favor to ask at this moment."

"I'll see what i can do when i hear it."

"I'd like the ability for my men to roam this place. Make them at home, if you know what i mean. We will be here for quite some time. I think it will do them good knowing where they are. Don't you think?"

"Agreed. If there's nothing, then I shall excuse myself. Enjoy your meals." Cherbourg said with a slight, fake smile on his face and disappeared into the hallway again.

Than Sion poked the dull, brown mush inside his bowl with a spoon.  It was suppose to be bran flakes, but Sion got the feeling that if he bribed the kitchen staff they would confess it was strips of cardboard ground down and soaked in water.  He took a glance over at Dredj who was sitting to his right.  Dredj was the fifth of the five wingman he had flown with in his military career.  He knew that fighter pilots generally had a low rate of survival, but that was the ironic part of it, none of them were dead.  Ever since the Than and Kal days ended, he had a hard time keeping the same wingman for more than a single mission.  It was almost as if a higher being didn't want him to develop wingman chemistry with anybody.

The thought of the good old days brought back something else.  Demonic was gone.  The feeling of resentment cause by his promotion to 2 Flight Leader splitting up the Than/Kal element had eventually passes awhile ago, but Demonic still was in the squadron.  There was always the chance that circumstance would create a possibility that they would be able to work together again, if only for a short time.  But now that he had went out of active duty for personal reasons, Sion's deep down hope for that chance was crushed.

Which led to the next development; after Demonic went into the reserves, Sion became the new XO.  He only had one combat mission with his Flight Leader position and he was already XO.  But it wasn't like he was completely un ready for the position; he did after all accept it.  The seemingly 100 year long period where Kaph was on patrol duty gave him some time to hone his leaderships skills a bit.  Still, the whole situation went with the on going theme of a lot of advancement in a short amount of time.

It took only one look at his data pad to make him sigh and stand up.  "I have something to say to you all.  It seems to be that some certain recent additions to Kaph feel that their placement into the Elite Squadron of the Vast Imperial Naval Fleet makes them too good to get their reports in, not naming any names."

Satisfied with two new recruits nervous looks, he sat back down and started filling out more paper work.  It was amusing that he could install a slight edge of fear in the new recruits when he was once just like them.

"You know, it didn't seem like Will dumped this much paper work on Kal," remarked Skylla mischievously from across the table.

"That is because Demonic would never let him," replied Sion with a smile on his face.  "On the other hand I am not as strong willed around my superiors."

"I think the communication's officer on the Doashim would have something to say about that last comment."

"I'll rephrase that, I am not as strong willed in front of my superiors that have had their asses strapped to twin ion engines and have not been sitting comfy inside a flying bunker."

Skylla laughed.  "Just admit it, your ability to be conned into more paper work is directly related to your high loyalty and respect for the good Commander.  You would take a laser bolt for him."

"That may be so, but so would everybody else in the squadron," said Sion as Willtconq walked in with a plate decked with a crispy, buttery croissant and strips of some kind of meat.  "Though that just might change if he keeps on rubbing our faces in his real food."

*******Previously***********

Cyleaf sat at his desk in the Academy. As an Operator for the Vast Empire Naval Academy he was responsible for greeting recruits aboard the drop ship before the DI's came in to claim them. The Zabrak was no longer in active duty so to say as he still kept up with his Academy duties and drilled with the reserves one weekend a month.

Rubbing his eyes which had been sore from countless hours staring at a computer he stood up and walked over to the nearest window. Outside many recruits were rolling around on the ground doing pushups or calisthenics. Wonder what mistake brought this on? Cy thought as he grabbed his cover and headed for the door.

Strolling through the parade grounds usually brought some relief to his weary thoughts, though his body was rock hard from the training regiment he developed while in the brig his heart wasn't. Not a day passed that thoughts of his former squadron didn't interrupt his work. Sometimes while walking into the mess hall he could hear recruits talk about him. "There's Senior Chief Aehait, I heard he was one of the big four in Kaph," a Human male whispered. "Oh yeah, what's Kaph?" replied the young Zabrak. "Only the most elite squadron." The Zabrak nodded.

Today his wondering took him over to the hanger bay where they Academy kept decommissioned fighters.  His heart ached as he stared at the Interceptor, once it had almost become his grave but all he felt now was longing.

*****Two days before deployment********

Cyleaf stood in front of Lt. Willtconq's desk. Things had sure changed since he had taken a break from active duty and enlisted into the reserves. Torn between the Academy and flying with a little mix of personnel issues it had been for the best. But he couldn't stand it no more.

"Well Cy what can I do for you?" Will asked looking a little curious as to why this man was in front of him standing as rigid as a board. Stepping forward the Zabrak placed a piece of paper onto the desk and stepped back. Willtconq reached forward and picked it up, peering at briefly he looked up and stared at him as if he was string right through to him.

"Is this serious?" Will asked leaning back again and rubbing his chin. "Yes, that is if you and Kaph will have me back." "Well I am not too sure, there have been some recent changes made to the roster that you probly don't know about&" Cyleaf cut him off, "Yes I know Than has become your Executive Officer and Kal entered the reserves. Does that sum it up?"

The sheer shock on Will's face made Cyleaf chuckle inside, at least he could catch the old man off guard. "Where did you learn all this?" "Well I kinda used the Academy computer to check the squadron rosters, I know I know but I wanted to make sure that the squadron wasn't full." Will shrugged and sighed. Taking out his datapad he brought up the roster and tossed it to Cyleaf.

Peering down at the screen he noticed that there were a couple new names and some old ones. "See that spot open right under me." Cy quickly nodded, "Well seems that I need a new wingman." Will leaned forward placing his hands on the desk, "Can you handle that role or has being in the reserves made you soft?" Cyleaf slammed his hand down on Will's desk and shouted "You got your man Sir!!" His voice full of joy Will's jaw dropped, "Oops got carried away" Cy quickly added.

**** ***** ****

Cyleaf snuck over to Skylla and Than's table, he was carrying his own bowl of the beautiful breakfast and a small container. Placing it on the table and sitting beside Skylla and opposite Than. "Here put a little of this sugar on there, makes everything taste better." And with that he took a bite acting like it tasted awesome.

HellKite slowly walked down the flight of stairs that lead to the main dining area.  Than and the other squadron members were already there, playing around with their so-called "food."  He said down silently, not making eye contact with anyone as he passed and took a seat beside the tin can the squadron called a droid.  Well, at least that was what HellKite would've normally called it.  Today, on the other hand, it was not just scrap metal.  Nope, not a piece of crummy cybernetics, but C-3 , um.  HellKite stopped to think.  What was it again?  C-3XO?  Whatever, it wasn't like it mattered.  HellKite grinned to himself as he remembered what he would be doing in a few months.

"Want some good o' fiber?  It's raw!"  HellKite's grin quickly faded as he looked to the left of him.  Than's smile faded away as well.  "Nevermind, I thought you finally took some anti-depressants and gained emotions."  HellKite rolled his eyes, going back to his thoughts.  As Than turned away, he murmered something about "just wanting to connect with the rest of the squadron.  HellKite hadn't been in the squadron for long, though this wasn't the reason he had made no friends in it.  There was Krius, but he disappeared with HellKite's sister after the Tatooine incident.  That was about the only person HellKite got the chance to know personally.

A drop of hot butter fell on the surface of the table, right next to where HellKite had rested his left hand.  "Not going to eat?"  HellKite looked up and saw Will, who was obviously enjoying his royal breakfast.  At the corner of his eye, he saw Than make a face.  The pilot stayed quiet for a bit and then shook his head, looking back down.  "Suit yourself," said Will as he shrugged and walked away.  HellKite yawned, leaning back, catching a view of the scenery out the window.  Nothing but ocean and ocean.  It reminded him of Kamino.  Kamino.  HellKite frowned.  Stupid Kaminoan.  Had it not been for his old Kaminoan acquantance, the boy wouldn't have died.  Holding back a sigh, HellKite looked up.

"I need to be excused."  With that, he got up and left, leaving a few of the squadron members to watch the silent man leave, confused looks on their faces.  HellKite opened the barrack door and looked through his luggage.  Finding nothing of interest inside, he reached for the sword besides the luggage.  He had carried it everywhere he traveled now.  It had seemingly became an addiction.  HellKite carefully grasped the blade and unsheathed it.  It wasn't like he was going to use it, seeing as he was a pilot and all, but he couldn't help but become bewitched by the beauty of the sword.  The cortosis covered phrik blade shimmered it's radiant luster as it reflected the sun.  HellKite sheathed it again, holding it to himself.

    "You're getting married?"

HellKite jumped and turned around, finding Dredj at the door.  "How did you know?"  HellKite gave him a murderous look.

"What do you mean?  Something has happened.  Will told me to get you.  There seems to be a problem."

"Oh&"  HellKite shook his head.  He could've swore Dredj had found about his engagement.  With a sigh of relief, HellKite nodded and followed Dredj downstairs.

C-3PX2 walked around the hallways of the outpost; without even noticing it, he was inspecting the hallways for the quality of the outpost. He wasn't noticing it because his mind was still thinking about those messages he received, from the Corporal on Etti IV. He wanted to go to Etti IV, but he knew that was not possible, at least at this time. Instead he decided that he would have to focus on the mission. They where station on this planet for a reason, to defend it at all costs. It was quiet on the station, almost too quiet. He continued to walk through the halls alone. He was thinking while he walked, about a lot more than Etti IV. Mostly he was thinking about why he did what he had done. Why would a Combat Droid join the Imperial Navy? He was built for ground combat, skilled for ground combat, yet he joined a star fighter squadron. He knew how to be an expert marksman, but instead he flies TIE Interceptors.

He stopped in front of a door, pressed a button, and walked into the room. It was the squadron barracks; he sat down on the bunk and waited for his monthly update on the situation on Etti IV. He sat there for an hour, with no result. The corporal had never been late before. He began to look through the Holo Net, hoping to see if anything had happened. After not finding anything he got up, and he went back to walking alone through the halls. HE walked past many people in the halls. Not even noticing anything that was happening. The base was small, quiet and dark. But there was no action. In the end that's all he wanted, a good battle to break up the calm. He stopped for a second, scanned the area, and continued to walk down the halls.

(OOC: not my best post, but next time i hope to have a longer, better written post.)

Etan sat at the head of the table watching as the others ate. A wookie wouldn't be caught dead or alive with that stuff in his mouth.Besides, he had more rations than that, that were more edible in his carry-on baggage back in quarters.

Instead, Etan sat enjoying, watching the rest of his company, wondering how he might be able to reach out to some of his fellow companions, without seeming like he was overbearing. Many of them had flown together for a long time, knowing and trusting each other. If Etan was to fly with them he had to gain their confidence, not the other way around.

Etan hadn't been with the squadron long. He still felt like an amateur when it came to flying, compared to them. Of course he was a huge and loud, obnoxious wookie. He could squash anyone of them in a moments notice. But, that wasn't anything a blaster or an adept sword couldn't equal out in a nano-second. Etan knew that well. He kept that thought close to his heart. Wookies were virtually unheard of in the Empire and for all anyone knew, he was a traitor. A spy for all they knew. What really, did any of them know of him. How could he really tell his story to any of them? Sure most of them knew wookie and could understand what he was saying. But, could they really understand what he was feeling?

He sat and watched as Commander Will, as he knew him, enter the room, with his knowing ways. Moments later Hellkite entered in his brooding way. He sat next to C3PX2, giving him a dismissing look. Etan listened to what he considered playful banter, while he pulled out his aviator's guide. He started to study as the rest of the squadron ate and chatted. He glanced over at C3PX2 thinking of how, although he was a way more advanced being, he reminded him of a very trusted friend and droid that Etan had left behind.

Quickly, Hellkite arose in his brooding mood, leaving the mess area behind. He obviously had things on his mind. Shortly afterwards C3PX2 also left to find his way about the ship, as any logical being would do. Etan, while feeling the same, didn't have the luxury of being logical or brooding. He felt, he should stay and try to enjoy the camaraderie of his fellow pilots. Instead, he read his flight manual while Commander Will,XO Than and the rest traded witty remarks.

It seemed that all he was doing on the base was roaming the halls. C-3PX2 walked from one end of the base to the other, he was patrolling the hallways. He walked into the mess hall, which was ironic because a droid has absolutely no use for a mess hall or the food in it. He walked in and sat down at one of the small tables. He pulled out a data pad, and began to look at the data on the closest systems. He looked through the trade of the area, the planet in the area, and the amount of ships that pass thought the area. He looked for anything that could be a possible security risk. He found nothing that would be a risk. He sat there for about a half hour doing nothing at all, and then he got up and left to walk the halls again.

After again walking through the hallways of the base, C-3PX2 stopped in front of a cargo bay, and entered it. He sat down on a cargo container and pulled out a combat knife. He then pulled out a sharpening stone and began to sharpen his blade. He spent time making it perfect. Then he detected something sneaking up on him, he readied hid blade, and the moment he saw it he threw the blade at it. He then got up, walked over to it. He removed the blade from what appeared to be an R-4 unit, though it was now badly damaged, and he exited the cargo bay to again roam the halls.

The whole squadron, in flight suit, plus Commander Cherbourg were now huddled around the holo table in the middle of the giant, floating dumpster's cramped excuse for a briefing room. Though Willtconq and Cherbourg kept their composer, it was easy to tell they were nervous about something.

"We have a possible situation on our hands," announced Cherbourg. "Long range scans have picked something up on the edge of the system. The problem is that our outer sensor array can only tell us that there are two small, capital sized ships sitting out there. They could be anything from badly damaged VEN vessels that limped their way to our system, to pirates or smugglers, to the New..."

Alarms silenced the officer in control of the floating station. A voice came over the PA. "New Republic ships have jumped near Mortain, one Lancer Frigate and a squadron of X-Wings... Wait, we now have a CR90 and a squadron of A-Wings to deal with too!"

Commander Cherbourg pressed a button on the command table and started barking orders. "Everyman to their battle stations, bring all defenses on line, send out a message for help...Why are you all still standing here, get the hell into your fighters!"

"You heard the man, Kaph, LET'S MOVE!" ordered Will.

The group didn't need any more of an invitation; they ran as fast as their legs would carry them to the hanger. They passed through the blast doors and onto the turbo lift platform that took them up to the TIE racks. As soon as the blimps had shown up on the radar, the techs had begun the start up sequence on their Interceptors, so they were all ready to go when Kaph got there.

Than pushed on his helmet as he dropped into his fighter. He brought the hatch down, strapped himself to his flight chair, and hooked his helmet up to the fighter's oxygen reserve. After everyone called out that they were all clear, flight control gave them the immediate green. The squadron of Interceptors shot out of the hanger.

"This is Kaph 1 to Kaph Squadron, switch to tactical frequency three. Kaph, try to stay clear of that Lancer off the bat. Its sole purpose of existence is to shoot down fighters like us. One flight, our target right now is that CR90, but we don't even have a chance at that until we thin out some of those fighters. Two flight will act as our cover when that time comes. Everybody's objective right now is to thin out those fighters."

"I copy that, Kaph Leader," replied Sion.

A transmission came over a non secure channel. "This is Captain Loc Manson of the Lancer Frigate Gunblade to the Mortain Imperial Station. If you wish to survive you will call off your fighters and surrender. If not, you will all die. We will be taking the station for the NR either way."

A new voice came over the same channel. "This is Commander Cherbourg of the Mortain Station, we will not surrender. We all would rather die standing up here than be executed by your kind later."

Will chimed into the conversation. "This is Kaph Leader to Gunblade, I think you've gotten a little big for your breaches. It is not certain that you will succeed."

"Kaph Leader, do you really think that a squadron of Interceptors and a handful of turret defenses are going to stop me?" mused Loc. "Your nearest help is 36 hours away. You are all doomed unless you surrender.

Than Sion smiled under his helmet. The idiot has no idea what he is up against. Let's teach him a lesson about making assumptions...

(OCC: There is no reason for me to control this step by step. Will made this story with the intent that you guys could have side plots and be able to move the main plot along with in reason. This will probably be our only practice before Chapter 9, so make the best of it. I would very much like to see a major increase in posting this week.)

Etan sat motionlessly as the alarms went off. He watched as commander Will and the rest of the Kaph squadron lept into action.

Commander Cherbourg of the Mortain station snapped orders that the Kaph squadron move into action as Commander Will re-emphasized those same commands.

Everyone moved as a sychronized unit, boarding the loading platform and making ready for flight. Everyone except Etan. Two others had remained behind. Not being able to squeeze onto the loading platform and waiting for Etan.

Hellkite remained behind with commander Will both barking commands at Etan to ready himself for flight.

Etan calmly marked his spot in the Aviator's guide, rising to join the rest of 1st flight. Etan had planned his movements to precisely time with the departure of the rest of Kaph squadron. He knew that by the time the platform had returned flight two would be in space and that he and the rest of flight one would be shortly behind. If only Cy, Will's wingman, were present. Then they would be a sight to see.

By the time Hellkite, Etan and Will had entered the hanger bay, second flight had already left. First flight knew what it's mission was. To knock off the CR90, but first there were some fighters to deal with.

Etan made a few preflight checks as Commander Will soared of to join the fight. Hellkite was the next to follow his ramps into space. Etan used this time to reflect upon the great pilot's he was flying with and the great pilot's that came before him. He was to be no different. Etan was destined to become one of the Empire's great pilot's. With that in mind, Etan thrusted his engines soaring off the ramps looking for greater glory in the destruction of enemy fighters.

That didn't take long. It seems as though second flight had out flown the X-wings and were well on their way to the A-wings, while Hellkite had already flown past and then turned around to bear down upon the same squadron of X-wings that had Etan in their sights.

Etan immediatly made evasive manuveurs. He came out up and above the X-wings while Hellkite bore down upon them from behind them. Two immediatly bore up and towards Etan while the other two sped on with Hellkite right on their exhaust.

Etan sped on, not knowing what to do. Making a few barrel rolls, he kept the rebel scum off his back.

Hellkite signaled Etan " Etan dive down and come back around straight at me."

Not knowing what to do, Etan did as Hellkite commanded. Suddenly they were bearing down upon each other. Face to face Hellkite versus Etan. " Pull up. Pull up." Hellkite was screaming into Etan's headset seconds before they collided.

Etan pulled hard up, while Hellkite dived nearly avoiding collision.  " Now shoot them bastards." Hellkite ordered while his blasters took out an approaching X-wing.

Etan rolled towards the attacking X-wings, gaining one in his sights. Seconds later, another X-wing was snafued.

"Hellkite" Etan offered." My communication array has been....." That was the last Hellkite would hear from Etan till he got back to base. His communications were out. Hopefully he would pick up on Hellkites manuevers and co-ordinate from there.

See Kaph squadron post? Hellkite include me in your posts until further notice. Thanks man!!!!!

"Kaph 5 to 2 Flight, it seems that 1 Flight is a little behind us.  Let them deal with the snubs, we'll take the A-Wings."

The delay between his last time in a dog fight and now had been uncomfortably long.  Even though he had logged a lot of simulator time during the same period, he was slightly afraid that he had become rusty.  Can't afford for that to be the case when the odds are so stacked against us.  Have to stick around so I can help my fellow pilots stay alive.

"Two flight, divide into elements," ordered Sion.  "You're going to have to fly smart out there if you want to see those hard bunks again.  That means to take Kaph Leader's advice and try to stay clear of that giant, metal, flying 'toy' of death.  Call out kills as you drop them."

The Chief Warrant Officer opened up a private channel with C3.  "Eight, make sure that Seven doesn't get vaped out there."  He would have been less blunt with a living pilot, but C-3PX2 was no living pilot.  It would have been a waste of his time to try to reinforce anything with emotions since the droid didn't have any.

"I copy that Kaph 5," replied C3.  "I'll make sure she isn't destroyed."

They succeeded in making One Flight "a better target" for the X-Wings and were almost in firing range of those fighters' faster counterparts.  Sion prepared for a head on battle, transferring power to his forward, deflector shield.

"ETA in 10 seconds," shouted Two Flight Leader.  "Let's try to take as many down as we can in the first run."

Eight...Seven...six...five...four...three...two...one...The space between the two squadrons opened up with red and green tracer streaks.  Sion began to pivot in a random pattern.  He let out a burst of fire to the left of one of the A-Wings, forcing it to go right.  The pilot never learned of his mistake.  The poor pilot slid right into Dredj's fire.  The fighter exploded in mid flight.

"Scratch off one A-Wing," said Six.

"Make that another," remarked Warmare.

"Add one more to the destroyed list," buzzed the electronic voice of Eight.

The destroyed A's wingman had made it through the head on battle and was vectoring to starboard right before Than was about to pass him.  He immediately zeroed his shields, banked his fighter starboard too, and hit his right rudder pedal hard.  He began to get tunnel vision and to see spots, but he was going in a straight line and leveling out again before any damage could be done.  He knew with out looking that Dredj was not right behind him.  Six was a pretty good pilot, but he hadn't had enough time yet to build up a G-force tolerance of Sion's magnitude.  He got into the elbow of the targeted A-Wing without much effort.  The enemy pilot was panicking, his maneuvers were choppy and had really no purpose.  But the fact that the pilot was green meant nothing in the terms of mercy.  If it has guns and is against you, destroy it..  He followed through with his philosophy, pushing down the trigger and pumping a quad burst into the sorry A's tail.  The A-Wing's aft shields gave out, making it obvious the enemy pilot hadn't equaled out his shields after the head on, and the burst punctured the enemy's fuel tanks.  The A-Wing and its pilot were obliterated back into their simple building blocks.

(Than I take it you want me to write Will into my posts somewhat as I am his wingman or are you gonna control him?)

Snapping on his helmet the Zabrak was ready for action, cinching up the pilot's seat harness he began a reduced systems check. As he was only checking important systems the weapons, engine and shields lights winked green. Powering up this Interceptor he acknowledged his status.

"Kaph 2 good to go"

As the rest of the squad acknowledged Will opened a private channel to Cy,

"Are you sure you're ready?"

"I wouldn't have asked to come back if I wasn't Sir!"

Cyleaf let the emotion extenuate his voice.

"Let's do this then, I am counting on you."

I won't fail you, not like I did Than, Cy still hadn't forgiven himself for that crash. As the fighter launched the familiar sensation of G-forces pushing him back into his seat brought butterflies to his stomach.

"Ok guys see those X-wings out there, that's our target" Will came over the flight channel.

"Copy that flight leader" The Zabrak replied, followed by Etan's muffled roar and Hellkite's acknowledgement. That was one thing that made it hard for Cyleaf's translator chip, the helmet distorted the Wookies speech.

"2 we need to thin out these fighters before they overwhelm our greener pilots." Will again had opened a private channel. Cyleaf had an idea.

"Hey Will let's play bait and switch."

A double mic click signified that Will understood, reaching for the throttle Cyleaf increased it to full. Ok let's just get one to bite, if two so the better. Increasing his shields slightly to the front Cyleaf's fighter had taken the lead, this would hopefully catch them slightly off guard.

Engaging his lasers green tracers spewed forward peppering the front fighter's shields. Slowing and pulling up hard he hoped to set the bait, it succeeded as two fighters followed. His left hand moving over the computer console he diverted all power to his rear shields and began to rotate his fighter, if eight cannons peppered his shields he wouldn't last long.

Rocking hard he was taking hits, shields were draining fast. Come on hold together, give Will just a little more time, Cyleaf had great faith in his Commander and like everyone else would die for him.

An explosion rocked behind him as Will took out one of his followers, the second fighter's assault had instantly cut out due to realizing he was in danger. Looping around Cyleaf saw Will giving chase, if he didn't have the helmet on he'd wipe the sweat off his forehead.

Cy set his shields back to default, well what he had left of them and waited for the full charge to come back.

The young Wookie pilot, Etan, was flying by instruments.

His companion Hellkite flew back around to accompany Etan back to base. Those last few A-wings were still out there, while Etan was basically defenseless.

Fight leader Will and his wingman Cy seemed to be keeping them occupied, but Hellkite was taking no chances. Who knew what else the rebels had in store.

Etan, flying by the seat of his pants, veered off. Will and Cy looked as if they might be getting the best of the A-wings, but Etan didn't have time to worry about that.

Hellkite, following Etan just into the upper atmosphere announced,"Etan, struggle back to base. We have this under control.", as he turned tail to rejoin the rest of the squadron.

Etan did as his friend had told him. He reached the hanger bay with little trouble. For quite some time he sat waiting for tech support. It seems as though this station wasn't quite fully equipped. To be continued....

"This is Kaph 7 requesting private channel with Kaph 5."

"Permission granted," replied Sion, hitting the com controls that fulfilled the request.  "What is up Seven?"  Two Flight Leader scanned for another target as he said this.

"Requesting to speak freely, sir."

"Spit it out Seven, those NR fighters are not going to get anymore docile."  Sion cursed to himself when he saw a fighter maneuver into Dredj's six to his own eleven.  He lightly hit his port ruder petal to get Six out of the mess.

"It is about your Lancer Frigate comment earlier.  Was it really necessary?"

"I don't think my comment was out of place in any way.  Nine probably picked it up and she hasn't tired to contact me about it.

"I'm not saying I am offended by it as a sexist issue but an over all issue with trivializing combat."

Sion slipped behind the A-Wing fighter in pursuit of Dredj.  The enemy pilot must have had tunnel vision at the moment since he made no attempt to evade the Interceptor behind him.  Sion switched to quad fire and let two bursts rip.  The first took down the shield and the second hit the A's starboard engine.  The ship spun out of control toward the atmosphere.  Sion didn't notice if the pilot had ejected or not.

"Thanks Five," said Dredj.

"No problem Six," said Sion.  He switched his output back to the private.  "Now, I'm not sure what they are teaching you in the Academy these days but out here, in the thick of things, we use this thing called humor to lighten our stress to a bearable level."

Than Sion knew it was over with that.  Her profile from the academy had made it clear that she would never get in an argument with her superiors.  To believe I was just like her in that sense not so long ago.  Always being so tight in combat that I came across as a hard ass.

Despite the valiant efforts of Kaph Squadron,  the battle was being pushed back closer and closer to the atmosphere.  Willtconq's voice came over the com set.  "Men, this isn't working.  We have only knocked about one flight off of each squadron.  But I have worst news than that.  The Lancer is almost in firing range of us and those fighters aren't letting us keep our distance in space.  We need to take out the Corvette first if we want any chance of surviving that frigate.  If we retreat into the atmosphere we will be able to buy ourselves some more time to do that."

"I copy that Kaph Leader," replied Than.  "Two Flight, form up on me."

Sion didn't like the idea of turning tail and running, but they had no choice.  The enemy simply out numbered them and had more fire power.  By putting distance between the fighters and their capitol ship support, they could try to even out the odds a bit before the big ships trudged their way through the atmosphere.  The reasoning doubled for taking out the corvette since it would arrive quicker than the frigate.

All things considered, I am amazed we haven't yet lost anyone.

(OCC: Yes, Cyleaf, you control what Will does in the story.  Now for the whole squadron, the enemy nor Nazgul is getting any less docile.)

Hellkite frowned as he watched Etan back to the base, bearing a worried look on his face.  "Hope he's going to be ok."  Hellkite stopped himself suddenly.  Why was he worrying so much this mission?  It wasn't like him to care about things like this.  The pilot adjusted himself in his seat.  It was a bit uncomfortable for he had spend months outside the cockpit.  In fact, he was used to hand to hand combat after tatooine, occasionally flinching and moving his body as his fighter moved.

A stray bolt snapped Hellkite out of his thoughts as it bursted seemingly from out of nowhere and barely missed the fighter.  The pilot snapped up, feeling a rush of adrenaline.  The fighter dipped to it's left side, breaking further away from Will and Cy.  It seemed the A-wing was more focused on the other two TIE interceptors.  Taking the element of surprise, Hellkite appeared behind the A-wing, fire rapidly.  The A-wing just rolled to the right, cruising smoothly as it avoided the shots easily.  Hellkite's interceptor on the other shook unsteadily in flight as he struggled to combat his panicking.  The A-wing diverted it's attention, flying head straight at Hellkite.  It closed in quickly as beams of laser shot towards Hellkite.  Sharply maneurvering his fighter, jamming the controls left and right, he managed to avoid the bolts but found himself almost right in front of the A-wing.  Without thinking, he fired at it at point blank.  It began to explode and even though HellKite had tried to fly away, part of the fighter was caught in the explosion.

It was pitch black for a minute, just pitch black while Hellkite's interceptor shook violently.  The smoke cleared up after a while, Hellkite however seemed to be miraculously alright.  He began to head back to the squadron when his ship faltered again, making distorted sounds that sounded like a dying animal.  A frown fell upon his face as he turned back for the base.  Looks like Etan wasn't the only one who needed reparations.  This really wasn't his day.  He let out a sigh as he cruised towards the base.

(it's a bit short, sorry.  I'll get a longer one up soon)

Than Sion brought his fighter up into a immelman over the Mesjo Ocean.  The aqua marine color would have been breath taking in any other situation.  Well it still was breath taking, but with a more literal meaning for a shot down pilot.  It was a miracle that the two pilots that were down were able to limp back to base.

"Six, I'm going to take on that X-Wing harassing Seven," informed Than.  "You split and take on another target of your choosing, but stay close."

"I copy that Five," replied Dredj as he broke starboard.

Than Sion barred down on the X, releasing a hail storm of cannon fire as he came into range.  The energy aurora around the fighter became visible with the touch of his green streaks.  Sion was coming in too fast.  He reduced throttle and brought himself into a roll.  He leveled out and turned port to get himself on the six of the X-Wing.  The enemy pivoted immediately, keeping Sion from getting a clean shot off on him.  Without warning, the X-Wing pilot banked starboard hard.  But it didn't throw Five off, he followed it flawlessly.  You don't end up in the Elite Squadron at random.

"Dredj, what's your status?" asked Sion.  "Because I need you over here."

"I helped get two more of the A-Wings along with 2 Flight, Duce Element," replied Blake.  "I'm heading your way."

The enemy fighter went into a sudden, sharp dive.  Sion grinned under his black helmet that bore the crest of Kaph Squadron.  He followed into the dive.  Sion brought the fighter into a cork screw around the enemy's flight path.  He throttled back midway and leveled off, right behind the enemy.  Got to love the spiral dive.

The enemy made a valiant effort at evading Sion further, but it was hopeless.  Two Flight Leader was in the X's elbow.  He had pounded the shields until the display showed them to be red when all of a sudden the X-Wing slid  to the right.  Damn... The X-Wing exploded as Sion rushed past it...Dredj gets the kill.  Oh well, that was exactly the point of having him here in the first place.

Sion remembered back to his first operation.  During the mission he had been shot down by an X-Wing fighter.  How things had changed since then.  He left the icy surface of Bokura V as a Crewman and now had the highest rank achievable without commission.  He went from being a recruit, fresh out of the academy, to the executive officer of the most elite squadron in the VEN.  Yes, he had come a long way since then.  Now if only I could keep a stable wingman and I would be all set.

Ahead of him he watched Warmare's Interceptor take out one of the X-Wings.  Now that I have "grown up" it is my turn to look after the "children."  It is the responsibility of the veterans to teach the rookies how it is done.  If we like it or not, they are the future of the squadron.  We might as well make the best of it.

(OCC: Still five left guys.)

dred's  tie banked hard right as he evaded an enemy ship that was attemptting to suiicide into him. Dredj shook his head and pulled back hard on the yoke, and forced his ship to loop backwards and jump on the 6 of the enemy ship. Dredj locked and showed this green  horn what a reall pilot could do. "Dredj!" " Get over here, i need you here now!" Than sounded excited. Of course all pilots got excited in the middle of comba, the rush of flying at almost super sonic speed past enemy fighters and capital ships. This is what dredj lived to do.

Dredj accessed his wrist computer and activated his Adrenaline rush program. He knew the dangres that it beared but he still did it, Than was the only one to know, besides top military officials, about dredjs"special condition"He was used as the test subject for the only model of adrenaline adaptors ever made by the special engineering corps of the navy,

Dredj floored his throttle and flashed past an allied ships and headed striaght to Thans 3. he had to stay with him or else he might have all the fun. Dredj smiled under the helmet of his crimson armor. "Time to kick some ass. and I really hat ethe3se New Republic scum "Six to five" AE (Adrienal Excellarator) system has been started."

"I told you not to do that, you know whatwill happen if you over-use that system, it will take over your mind and you wont be the same." Than blew up 2 enemy fighters while saying this.

"I'll deal with this when we get back."

Dredj murmmered to himself "My dreams say i won't be able to come back." Something really bad is going to happen today"

(OCC: glad to be back in the action.)

The enemy's squadrons were now reduced to a flight each.  It was then, as if on cue, that the hammer like form of the CR90 poked out of a patch of clouds.

"This is Kaph Leader; it seems that the plan worked.  Three Flight, keep those remaining fighters off of the rest of the squadron's back; we're going in.  One flight will take the first run, quickly followed by Two Flight's second wave.  We'll repeat this pattern until the Corvette falls into the ocean as a pillar of flames, this doesn't mean you shouldn't cover your own skins if you get in a sticky situation with a fighter.  That would come first; we can't afford to loose too many of us this early in the battle against the capital ships.  The key is to do this quickly since we will not have a lot of time before the Lancer shows up."

The key phrase is "this early."  Sion knew it wasn't only he that picked up the significance of those two words.  The chances were that not many of them would survive the Lancer's fury.  May it be that our skills help us beat the odds.

It began.  Flight one came into range of the CR90's cannons.  The guns shifted as they picked a target and began to fire.  The fighters in One Flight broke apart from their diamond formation, attacking from multiple angles on the ship.  Willtconq was the first to get a hit.  The shield turned a bluish, purple around the concussion missile's explosion.  Waves of superheated atmosphere shot out from the small ball of fire that was against the CR90's port deflector shield.  It would take much more than that.  The enemy ship took a couple more missile hits before Flight One's run was over.

"Ok 2 Flight, it is our turn," shouted Sion.  "Be quick with making a lock and watch those guns!"

Let it be that they were all listening.

Kaph 9

It was the same position in the same squadron, yet Skylla couldn't shake the feeling that she was starting over.  It beyond doubt had a lot to do with the fact that there were no familiar faces among her flight.  In Kaph's last battle, 3 Flight had been reduced to only her.  Two were killed and one turned out to be a defector bent on revenge.

She had turned to drinking after they returned to Abrae for she believed it had been her fault.  At the climax she was pretty much never sober.  That is when Than stepped in and saved her from herself.  To believe at that moment she hated him for it.  In her alcohol induced fog she saw him as the man trying to take away the one thing that numbed the pain.  She thought that he too blamed her for the deaths of her flight members and that he was trying to punish her for it by taking away the bottle.

But when she sobered up she realized that he didn't pull here out of the Enlisted Club because he was livid about what "she had done" but because he loved her.  He was not there to hurt but help.  And I had the nerve to "bite the hand that saved me."  Yes, it was not he who hurt me but I that hurt him.  Thank God that he is an understanding and forgiving man.  Thank God that he helped bring me back from the shadows and brought me back to the right path...

(OCC: Thanks for posting Dredj.  Aristoc, for now you are Kaph 11 in 3 Flight.)

The corvette had one hell of a shield. Hit after, hit, the shields flared as it stopped the incoming missiles and blaster fire. The ship answered back with its enormous turrets and concussion missles. Dredj's  special operations fighter, the StarViper Assault Fighter, shot into action. This ship was only allowed if Will or Than allowed it.

In this case they approved the use of this ship. He was told to use ti as a means to draw attention away from the main squad, a sort of diversion. Dredj formed up with a bombing squad and headed straight to the port side of the corvette. The ships turrets took notice of this and began to fire on them. They broke formation and attempted to get as close as possible without being shot down. Dredj's ship sailed through the blasts like a bird through a cloud. But suddenly the ships turrets interlocked their blasts and it became very difficult to avoid them. Two ships were hit almost instantly.

"Six to five, we are facing heavy fire over here, i've lost two of the attack bombers and i think that if we don't get relief soon we will get shot down too. I dont want to retreat, this is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity to take the enemy's ships down."

"Five to six, were too are facing heavy fire and suggest that you move back are far as possible so that your ships do not get destroyed. We must keep them alive as long as possible. We must take out the shields and the ship!"

"Copy that five, moving back, i will give supporting fire while the ships fall back. Dredj pushed his throttle down and flipped his ship onto its side to avoid being hit. Then dropped it back down and fire his first of three salvos of topedoes. These hit the shield, causing it to flare a purplish red color. Dredj held his laser trigger and blasted the shield with all he had. But then the corvettes turrets turned toward his ship and opened up on him. A missle exploded just left of his ship causing he shields to flare and his ship to lose control. This threw his ship directly into the line of fire, so he had to either bank or pull hard up. He evaded the blasts and banked.

But he banked too quickly and was forced upward, dredj flet the rush and pressure of the high speed manuevers. HE knew these newbies wouldn't be able to hit. He had simulation fights with than at these speeds and Than much quicker than these guys. Dredj saisd " Hey Than lets show these scum how a true pilot fights.....

Etan listened to the com. chatter, as the single base technician and two droids worked feverishly to repair his Tie. It seemed as though it had been hours since he had been grounded from his flight by a single error in movement on his part. In fact, it had only been minutes. Twenty two minutes and fifteen seconds to be exact. He knew this because he kept constant watch on the chronometer, while those bumbling idiots did virtually nothing to get him back in space.

The technician climbed out of the cockpit. Approaching Etan warily, the wookie roared. Not knowing wookie he stood outside the reach of the frustrated Etan. " I'm sorry sir, but I can't isolate the problem. All you primary flight and engine systems seem to be in working order, but your secondary systems, what we call support sys....". Etan cut him off, yelling wookie obscenities. Etan strode towards the disabled Tie. This particular wookie had worked on numerous spacecraft and was an accomplished technician himself.

He climbed into the cramped Tie fighter cockpit. Oh, how he missed his Advanced Tie fighter. Now, that was a craft to be reckoned with. On it there was plenty of room for a larger being such as himself. This was a most efficient craft, but never the less a cramped one.

Sitting down his elbow hit a breaker located just below and to the right of his right elbow while he tried to make room for his large furry body. Immediately, instruments came to life. Secondary systems came on-line. The technician watched in amazement as though the wookie was a master technician. Etan bellowed towards the technician " You dumb--- it was only a breaker disengaged..." with many expletives in between, as he closed the hatch ready for battle. The droids quickly backed away from the enlivened Tie fighter as Etan fired the engines ready to make his way back to his flight. The technician ran towards the controls for the hanger bay doors, giving Etan the thumbs up for launch as they slowly opened.

Donning his head gear, to get up to speed with the rest of his squadron, as he soared through the atmosphere, Etan accidentally hit the breaker with his elbow again. Secondary systems went offline. He was flying blind with no instruments again. Reaching over with his left hand, he flipped the switch. Communications, instruments and all secondary systems were back on-line. He had to remember that this cockpit was much smaller than he was used to and to not do that in the middle of a combat situation.

With everything in mind he soared towards the upper atmosphere to rejoin his squadron. This time would be different. He had made his first kill with the help of his flying partner Hellkite. Univeral translators automatically engaged, Etan called to Hellkite trying to locate his position.

"He's a pirate, sir.  One of them Behemoth people.  They were never too popular but they've done impressive damage for such a tiny group.  Anything else you want about him?"  The man questioned his captain, staring up at the bulky man.  It had been his first week and all he was assigned were grunt work.  To be honest, he really hated it but complaining was a no no.  The captain grunted, which caused  the man to flinch.

"Yes, get me everything about him.  I said every little detail on every pilot of that squadron.  Didn't you hear me the first time?  Or shall I send you to the medical room for hearing disorders?"

The man gulped and shook his head.  "No sir, that won't be necessary."  With that, he ran back to a group of people working at computers.  He sat down on his seat, sinking in slowly.  At least the chairs were comfortable.

The captain himself looked on at the group, looking through the databases for any information.  Why he wanted the info?  He had his own reasons.  The brutish man grunted again, raising his huge shoulders and turned around, heading out of the room.  He continued onto the hallway, treading with heavy noises caused by the beating his boots gave to the polished floor.  The outside halls of the station was as busy as the inside rooms, full of people running in every direction.  A droid stopped in front of the captain suddenly, stopping at the halt violently.

"Sir, another one of the pilots is heading back."

The captain looked up before answering.  "Lead me to him."  The droid seemed to sway in response and headed towards an unknown direction.  The captain followed.
-------------------

"Hellkite?" a voice clicked on the comlink.  Hellkite looked down at the machine as he flied his fighter wobbily back.

"This is Kaph 4, what's wrong?"

"Where are you?  I've just gotten this dang thing fixed."

"Better you go on by yourself, I'm heading back for repairs."  No response followed.  Hellkite shrugged and turned his attention back to flying his crippled interceptor.

The fighter landed smoothly in the dock surprisingly, powering down as droids rushed towards the fighter.  The pilot hopped out of the fighter, telling the mechanics what had gone wrong before leaving the area.  He had a good half an hour or two before things were done.  The man took his studying the area.  He had passed here earlier but it was rushed.  There wasn't much architecture to appreciate though, it was built simple.  Sighing, he leaned against a wall and watched as sparks lit in the distance from the tools the droids used.

Sudden footsteps began to approach him, but he didn't turn back.

"Pilot, I want to talk to you," came a gorilla-like voice.

Than Sion gripped the handles of his flight yoke tightly.  He shouldn't be so nervous going up against the CR90, especially when it would be followed up by the Lancer.  But for some reason he was; probably not for himself but the others.  Some of them were not yet very experienced in the art of fighter combat.  But he couldn't let these emotions get the better of him; he would die if he did.

He pressed down the thumb with the green button under it as soon as he heard the soothing sound of the missile lock confirmation beep.  He pivoted left, just missing one of the turret's mark.  He didn't stay around to see where his birdie ended up.  He immediately pulled is fighter up in to an Immelman.  In the 5 seconds flat that it took to initiate the maneuver, the battle had progressed greatly.  Most of one of the missiles energy had made it through a week point on the shield, slaging the turret on the highest point of the Corvette.  At least one other of the turrets had been taken out and the shields had received a tremendous amount of damage, especially the aft deflector shield.  Having that in mind, Sion dove on the CR90 in a barrel roll to avoid the enemy's fire.  He ended his spinning and oriented himself toward the Corvette's engine block slightly before his flight path intersected with the tail end of the CR90's.  He quickly got a lock on the heat signature and let two of the mighty projectiles rip.  He then got his ass out of their before the enemy gunners could lock onto him and commit an act of retroactive retaliation.  The birdies smacked the shield hard, so hard in fact that it couldn't handle it.

"Kaph 5 to Kaph 1, I opened the back door for you."

"Thanks five," replied Will.  "Now let's finish it, 1 Flight, before they get the gerbil to run on the wheel hooked up to the generator again."

"How is 3 Flight doing with fighter cover?" asked Sion out of curiosity.

"We're doing just fine with out you boys' help," stated Skylla.  "The A-Wings are no more and the X-Wings are down to a single element.  It is all a matter of a mop up operation now."

Than was glad to hear that Skylla was back into the game for this mission.  He had feared that she hadn't gotten over last mission's incident.  Thank God she is strong.

"For this part of the battle maybe, but not for the next," said Will, interrupting Five's train of thought.  It isn't over until the fat lady sings.

If one were to observe the battle from a decent distance away, one would see that it took only three points of light from the clutches to pull the plug on the CR90 Corellian Corvette.  Gravity didn't give the Imperials the pleasure of seeing the ship break in half as it would in the void.  It crashed into the ocean on its starboard side shooting water a hundred feet into the air.

It happened not a moment too soon, for its bad tempered sister had finally made it to the show.  She was not alone.  In the Lancer's wake followed a fresh squadron of X-Wings and two assault landing craft.

"There is going to be a hell of a battle ahead, sir," remarked Sion to Will.

"No," replied Will. "Because hell isn't this bad..."

"Look at me now, mom," Enzadi Malko, the Strangler as he was named, thought, Crewman Malko, now. What a wonderful feeling it was to be called such. It made a certain pride swell in Enzadi's heart, being a member of the most prestigious, elite fighting forces in the entire Galaxy. Yet it also brought him shame. His mother, Uma, had never lived to see him become that.

"No time for that now," he thought glumly, his fingers clutching the flight yoke of the TIE Aggressor in sequence. Pinky, ring, middle, index, thumb. That's why he was the Strangler. Always clenching, unclenching. Enzadi didn't fret over edging the yoke slightly; the Aggressor was in hyperspace, a convenience he probably needed to enjoy while he could. It must have been luck: he graduates from the Naval Academy, is assigned to the Kaph Squadron of the Phoenix Wing, and low and behold Kaph Squadron is stationed in an avenue for space traffic. A squadron's worth of TIE Aggressors was needed elsewhere, and Mortain was a waypoint for the itinerary, so Enzadi got to pilot one, for the moment. A wonderful turn of events, as it cut out much of the time waiting for some dull craft to pick him up and probably drop other recruits at their various stations. The very thought of such a thing happening made Enzadi gag just a bit.

A generic wide-range message announced, "We are in range of Mortain. Begin your deceleration from hyperspace."

Enzadi obeyed, fiddling with control buttons. He didn't really know how to work the more-advanced Aggressor controls, but he learned very fast. Stars lengthened as the craft left hyperspace, and planet Mortain came into view.

"Nice, I guess," Enzadi said out loud. Since his mother's death, that was just a habit he had taken up. Talking to himself eased the pain. He was his own friend when he needed it. As the squadron approached the planet, Enzadi started to think about his assignment: Kaph Squadron. "Will I get along with these guys?" he thought anxiously. "What if they think I'm too much of a soft mamma's boy, hm? Nah. It won't happen. I'm Enzadi Malko, damn it! Everybody likes me!"

His thoughts were interrupted by the bark of someone at him over the com. "Adjust your pitch! Look how close you are to me now!" Enzadi looked. It was true. He let his mind wander, and with these bulkier Aggressors he had lost control a bit. He pitched down, returning to formation.

"That's better. Don't let it happen again though, or we'll both be lost." Enzadi replied with an apology, and his lecture ended. Now they were quite close to Mortain, practically ready to begin their descent. They all down-pitched, and Enzadi followed suit. They continued at this for a few minutes, when the apparent commanding officer barked a new, more exciting, command over the com:

"Looks like we've got a bit of trouble, now! New kid gets to see his first real action in an Aggressor. Lucky you!" The rest of the squadron agreed, offering boisterous laughter and hearty congratulations as they changed course and velocity. After making a couple jokes to only minimal laughter, Enzadi switched off his com receiver.

"Yeah right. Lucky me," he said to himself.

((OOC:I don't know if that would be the proper naval thing to do in a reinforcement situation, so I improvised. PM me if you need a fix.))

What was going on in Sion's head could be most closely described as a super nova.  The time in which this "explosion" begins is with the destruction of the CR90.  This could be called the point of origin.  Then out from the point of origin comes the Lancer Frigate with its unexpected entourage and the arrival of the reinforcements.  Each example is on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum, one brings pain when the other brings joy.  But this is no balance; no Ying Yang for the later over powers the emotions of the first.  It installs a feeling that every being needs but many lack, hope.  But like all things that have a beginning, the super nova has an end.  It is with the fiery ball that was issued out to a Kaph 6, Dredj.  This point of light crashed into the shielded, tool of squint death.  But like a super nova which shoots out far into the void and then goes black, there is no emotion of pain.  It was almost as if the event was trivial and was the precursor of the more important event.  Sion flipped a switch on his communications board.

"Kaph 5 to Mortain Base, is there anyway you can send out a sea base search patrol?  I think one of our boys is in the water."

"Considering that you fly boys have the NR force's hands full, that shouldn't be too difficult."

"Thanks control."

They called it pilot intuition, the ability to understand something with little logic to support it.  Sion had learned a long time ago to trust it for it had saved his life on more than one occasion.  He just hoped it wouldn't fail him this time.

"Echo Leader to Kaph Leader, what is the situation?"

"I copy you Echo Leader," said Will.  "You don't know how happy we are to see you; we've been holding our own for a long time now.  We have taken many of the New Republic forces out but a Lancer Frigate, a squadron of X-Wings, and two assault shuttles still remain."

"Seems that we should have brought more than a squadron," stated Echo Leader.

"It may be a difficult battle, but with our combined fire power we should be able to defeat them."

"I never thought that was the issue, the issue is how many we will loose in the process of doing so."

It was what everybody was thinking but no one would say until now.  They built the Lancer solely to destroy fighters.  With twenty quad guns it lived up to that purpose.  Plus it had fighter support.  If only we had a capital ship of our own.  Then the Lancer would be the one in hot water, literally.

"It doesn't matter what the issue is now, the X-Wings ETA is in one minute."

"Then let the blood bath begin, may what ever god or gods you worship have mercy on us."

This is what it boils down to, two squadrons of fighters (1 being the most elite in the VEN Fleet) against an anti fighter capital ship and a squadron of fighters.  Who will come out of this show down is unknown, what is known is that many will die for their banner to fly over the Mortain Base.

Enzadi's gripped tightened on the control yoke as he flew in his temporary Echo flight. His eyes darted about the sky as Echo Squadron continued to descend in formation. He chuckled a bit.

"Soon I'll be a Kaph," he thought. "Soon."

Echo Leader sent out a squadron wide message. "This is Echo Leader. We will begin making our attack vector shortly. Except for you, Eleven." That was Enzadi. The dwindling numbers of the VEN had led to not every squadron being full, or even have a full numbers worth of pilots. Echo Squadron was no exception. "Echo Eleven, you will be linking up with Kaph Five. He needs a wingman." Kaph Five's, a pilot named Than Sion, wingman had been shot down, and apparently he noticed the unevenness of Echo Squadron, so he contacted Echo Leader requesting a wingman. He must have been surprised to hear that, by fate, his squadron had been escorting a new kaph pilot. After this somber announcement, Echo Leader's tone changed from that of a briefing superior to a boisterous uncle once more. "Let's give it up for Kaph...Six!" he shouted over the squadron com, to the rest of Echo Squadron cheering for Enzadi. He smiled.

"Thank you, Echo Leader. It's been great flying with you guys."

Enzadi chuckled again at what had transpired. In his mind, he saw himself entering to the Squadron at rest, getting to know everyone at ease. Joking with his wingman. Bonding with the element, that was the term they used at the Academy But now, here was thrust into battle in a fairly foreign craft, having someone he didn't know have to cover his tail.

"Life is strange," Enzadi thought. He was interrupted once more by Echo Leader.

"Alright, Kaph Six. Take point. We'll escort you until you meet up with your wingman."

"Copy that, Echo Leader."

He flew into the point position, Echo Ten covering him.  He tuned the Aggressor's communication into the Kaph specific channel. He cleared his throat, planning his words carefully.

"Kaph Five, this is Kaph Six. What's your current position?"

"I Copy you Kaph 6," replied Sion to the Strangler.  "According to my display I am about a kilometer or two off your eleven.  I guess you're my wingman now, welcome to Kaph Squadron."  And welcome to hell in the sky.

"Thanks Kaph 5, I will not let you down," stated Enzadi.  What number is he, six or seven?  Why can't I keep a wingman for more than one mission?  Like I've said before, God doesn't want me to develop elemental chemistry with a wingman.

"I am happy to hear that you are confident in your abilities, Kaph Six, because you're going to have to be against that big bug zapper in front of us.  Prepare for the head on with the X-Wing squadron.  Once we make it through the wave you'll cover my six.  Am I clear?"

"Crystal Clear, Kaph 5."

There was no more time to talk, Sion shunted power from his engines to his cannons and concentrated the majority of his shield power to the forward deflector.  The firing range was reached, immediately the fire storm of green and red began.  One of the X-Wings fired a missile.  Sion's laser fire intercepted it only three meters from the enemy fighter.  The X's shields were taken out and its hull was badly fire scorched.  Five pivoted randomly to avoid the damaged fighter's retaliation.  He then neatly fired a single shot through the canopy, basically vaporizing the NR pilot inside.  The ghost fighter dropped into the vast ocean.

An enemy fighter to Sion's ten exploded after taking heavy fire.  No doubt the kill was credited to his wingman.  Hmm, not bad for a greenie fresh out of the academy.  Most new recruits are too busy trying not to piss their pants during their first head on to get a kill.

The Sion/Enzadi element broke through the wave.  Sion quickly equalized his shields and shunted power into his engines.  He then banked hard to starboard to pursue the snub fighters.  He ended up gaining on one of the X-Wings but was at too bad of an angle to get a good shot off.  The enemy pilot had his eyes on a member of Echo Squadron and break turned in pursuit.  It was exactly the opportunity Five was looking for.  He pulled his fighter around into a high speed yo-yo and back behind the snub fighter.  He was farther away but had a nice shot at the enemy's six.  Sion opened fire without mercy and with extreme prejudice.  The X-Wing pilot tried to evade destruction, but the Interceptor and Sion were too quick, he rapidly ended up in the snub fighter's elbow.  It was all over not long after, the ship went down like a flare over the ocean.

Sion's fighter jolted for a second or two before he felt an explosion slightly push him forward.  A red dot blinked out on the radar display at the base of the control yoke.  What it represented had been behind him.

"I'm glad you know how to listen, Kaph 6," said Than.  "Thank you for covering me."

"No problem, happy I could assist," replied Enzadi.

"Now that I think back, that is a flight between the two of us so far."

"Maybe we should be nice and leave some for the others."

Than Sion just laughed.  I like this guy already and I don't even know what his face looks like.

Watching the enemy ship crach into the ocean gave dredj an overexcited feeling. He could hardly contain his happineess that for a second he let go of the controls, *bad idea*. He quickly grabbed them and smiled. WOW, that was  a stupid idea. He looked around and saw the second enemy ship, The Lancer. He had been waiting for this ship to arrive. He turned his ship towards tthe lancer and shot straight at it. He flew to Thans 3 and they wen in fast hard.

This was going to be a really good battle.

"Leading Crewman HellKite I presume?"  HellKite simply nodded, staring off into another direction.  "Sir, you should make eye contact when someone is talking to you."  The pilot sighed and rolled his eyes, turning his head to face the bulky man and raised his brows for a second before turning back.

"Happy?" asked HellKite, watching as an astromech droid repaired another interceptor.

"Good enough," the man answered with a glare.  "While your ship is being repaired, I want you to tell me a little about Kaph and yourself."

"Not a good idea.  I'm pretty new to the Imperials, I don't know much.  As for my past- ," HellKite said and then paused, turning back to look at the man.  "We won't have enough time for me to finish."

"Say what you can fit in."

"Nope."  The plain and simple worlds rolled off his tongue quickly.  He then got up and started to walk away.  "Looks like repairs are done already.  Sorry, you."  HellKite turned back and grinned before walking back to his fighter.

"Hey! Next time, you ought to be more respectful to your superiors.  If you were one of my men you would've been dead already.  It's captain to you!" screamed the captain as the Kaph pilot walked away, seemingly apathetic to the words the captain had screamed.

The seat was still rigid and cold, his whole body felled encased as he sat down.  The engines started smoothly though, the interceptor seemed to be working better.  At least those repairs did something useful.  HellKite took a deep breath and began flight again.  The interceptor whizzed out of the port, taking flight in a loud soft hum.  The nervousness had left him then, he sat back, his body relaxed.  Still, for some reason, he didn't feel as comfortable as he usually did.  There was something in the back of his mind that bothered him.  Hoping it wouldn't be too much of a distraction, he readied himself for battle.  First thing on the list, regrouping.  HellKite tapped on the box that had been installed in the interceptor.

"This is Kaph 4, anyone want to catch me up?"  Nothing came for a moment.  Then a buzz of static came followed by some clicks.  Etan's voice came over right after.

"It seems we have a new squadron member.  Hurry up and get here, I think you can see us from your fighter.  We'll be needing as much backup as we need.  Let's show these people what Imperials are made of."  The wookie roared a battle cry before he stopped talking.

"Interesting.  Remind me to welcome him after this is over."  There was no answer though it wasn't necessary.  There must've been something important though if Etan felt the need to concentrate on something else instead of answering.  Squinting, he could make out a few dots in the distance.  Assuming it was his squadron, the Interceptor glided towards the dots to join them.

Enzadi gripped the Aggressor's yoke a little bit tighter.

"Cover him," the Strangler thought. "That's fine with me."

Enzadi's eyes scanned the scan, to his instrument panel, back to the firmament that lay outside, to his wingman, to the instrument panel, which indicated the approach of an X-Wing bandit on his and Than's tail. He could Split-S into an Immelman, but Than would be dead by then. Which meant court-martial for him, and most likely a dishonorable discharge.

His mother's words rang in his head. "I hope my only son will one day do something with his life." Mother. Uma.

"I will not let you down," he thought. Thinking fast, he reached for the yoke which controlled the back turret of the Aggressor. He manipulated it until his hand seemed used to it.It was a little weird, and he had to improvise for lack of training at the Academy. He sighed. He was glad to be off of Abrae. He shook himself, not letting his mind wander. The controls of the turret were reversed, and Enzadi had to both manipulate the turret and navigate the hybrid bomber.

"What are you up to, Kaph Six?" Than asked over the com. There was a bit of wariness in his voice.

"He must be troubled by my lack of maneuvers," Enzadi thought. He glanced to his intrument panel, and the rear radar installed in the craft marked enemy cannon fire heading for him. He made his move. He pulled into a Barrel Roll, and let loose a fury of cannon fire from the rear turret.

"What the hell are you doing, Six?" Than roared at him.

"Hold on, Kaph Five!" he yelled back. Yet having to defend his thinking didn't break his concentration. With moderate accuracy, the rear turret fire struck the bandit's cockpit before he could reconfigure his shields to deflect rear fire. Enzadi couldn't see, but the cockpit glass shattered, and the pilot was killed. As the X-Wing fell, Enzadi righted himself from the roll, yet he continued to send salvo after salvo of cannon fire at the bandit until he couldn't anymore.

"That was a nice trick, Kaph Six," Than said after he righted himself.

"For my next one, watch as I pull a Super Star Destroyer out of my ass," the Strangler replied, smiling a bit. Than laughed.

"We might actually work, him and I," Enzadi thought, looking to the renewed offensive of X-Wings.

Sion was trying with all his might to summon back everything he had ever learned about a Lancer Frigate.  Unlike some of the other trainees that tried to just get by in the Academy, Sion had paid attention and tried to learn and retain everything he could in order to use it against the enemy later.  See most of those who enrolled in the VENA had done so because they had delusions of making a name for themselves.  Than was there for deeper reasons because about five years ago his parents had been killed by drunken NR soldiers in an act of pointless violence.  He hadn't enlisted to chase after glory, he had joined to help drive the New Republic into the ground.  In one second it all clicked.

"Kaph leader," said Five over a private channel.  "I think I know how to take this beast down."

"I'm happy you have something because my mind is too crammed to get beyond the 'fighter killer' fact," replied Willtconq.  "Lancer's are usually associated with the Thrawnists, I would never have thought one would show up on the NR front on the other side.  Thus I don't have the details about one on top of my head.  Might as well put it on the general Imperial Channel."

"Sir, wouldn't you rather relay it just incase you need to make revisions to the idea?"

"Did I just not tell you I have been drawing blanks?  Part of being an XO is that one is responsible to take over if the SC is no longer able to command for any reason from diarrhea to death.  I made you XO because I can trust you to fulfill that duty, thus I trust your judgment...There isn't time to jabber like this, get it out before it is too late!"

In war there is a many occasion where a soldier goes beyond himself and completely merges his heart and soul with those that fight at his side.  Now was one of those moments as Sion flipped a switch on his communication board.

"This is Kaph 5 to all Imperial Forces fighting for their lives, their way of life over this watery grave of a planet.  As you know we lack any form of strong central command, thus we don't have them to tell us the most effective way to destroy the Lancer.  But what we do have is our minds, and my own has come up with a plan.  The ETA on what is an Armageddon machine to us, in this situation, is less than three minutes, so I'll have to make this quick.  On both sides of the bridge is a tear drop shaped structure which are the shield generators.  We will concentrate our fire at those two points in order to drop the deflectors the quickest.  The next target after we take out the Lancer's shields is the dorsal point just ahead of the engine block.  If we can knock a big enough hole in that area we will be able to activate the frigates auto shut off function, effectively knocking out the ships ability to move.  But not everyone will concentrate on that point.  The dish like structures are the targeting sensors, if Kaph and Echo 1 Flights can each take one out the gunners' accuracy will be greatly depleted since they will have to depend completely on their own targeting skills.  Finally, when we have them sitting in one placed and numbed up a bit we'll hit the final target.  On the dorsal side of the ship there is a structure near the engines which acts as a blow back system if the generator is taken out.  If someone can get a well aimed missile into the box we can take out the generator, effectively knocking out all twenty of the guns on that thing.  See there is the fatal flaw, they all draw their power from one source.  After that they are a sitting duck.  It is still highly risky and no doubt some of you will die, but you will die so that the flag of the Empire will fly over Mortain tomorrow, so that many others will live, so that the disgusting blue crest and white stars of the New Republic WILL NEVER FLY OVER ABRAE!"

Than Sion was panting, it took a great effort to blurt out so much information clearly, in less than two minutes and with so much emotion.  The fact that he had to keep on fighting while doing it added to the difficulty level.  Then it came, the war cry of every man and woman in the two squadrons and the command room of the Mortain Station.  He could tell that everyone  of them would fight till the threat was obliterated or until the last man fell.  Which was good because the station would be on its own when it came to the assault shuttles and the troops they carried...
