Well, I figured we could just make one sticky topic for all IRC issues/questions/complaints/comments.
To start things off, the server is having some downtime as the hosting company is moving their servers. FT should be down no longer than a half an hour. -----------------------

Perhaps try the following:
Start -> CMD -> Ping irc.fossiltechnology.com
Change YOUR settings accordingly as Talon already has his. -----------------------

I've left Kad a message to have him update the VE's domains pointing to the server. At the moment irc.fossiltechnology.com is the only one that works. -----------------------

If you are using jIRC you might want to try typing /server irc.fossiltechnology.com, it might work. -----------------------

I'm not using Java chat. I'm using mIRC (Java has to little features, and doesnt support scripts. Besides, I've been using irc much longer then I have been a member of VE) -----------------------

Same thing. The only solution seems to be to connect to one of the alternate servers. -----------------------

I checked out the JavaChat today and was able to get on just fine using irc.imperialnetwork.com. I noticed that the irc.vastempire.com wasn't pointing to the correct IP address (even though it was configured correctly), so I went and changed it again. It should be updated in about 24 hours or so.
If people are still having trouble with these, I also added the irc.fossiltechnology.com link which should be ok as well.
If there are any other problems, let me know. -----------------------

Well, the server managed to sht itself right after I left. Sorry about not having services guys. Everything's back up and running. You may need to re-register some things... I know my nicks/channels dropped while I was gone. If anyone has any problems, let me know. -----------------------

Both Javachat and mIRC say you need to register. Neither really force you. Just ignore the money grubbing and it'll work just fine. -----------------------

I have a problem...a big one. I just joined and before I get all gung ho about this place, and get my hopes up, I need to know if talking on IRC is required to be a member here. It simply does not work on my computer, and besides that I work two jobs and don't have time to sit and chat (not that I wouldn't love to! It's just the whole gotta make a living thing  )
I do have YIM, although again I don't just sign on and chat. I have to be scheduled to go online. So the best way to contact me is through email, and then from there I can schedule a time to be on YIM and chat if necessary. Involved and a giant pain in the tucas I know.
So all of that just to ask the question...do I have to unsub from this place if I can't participate in IRC chats? I really hope not because so far I *love* this place, and would hate to not be able to participate. -----------------------

It isn't mandatory to use IRC, though it is extremely helpful and fun. YOu can still communicate through e-mail and comnet here, and it doesn't hinder your stories.
IRC is simply the easiest way to stay in touch. Again, you don't need it, but it's alot of fun. -----------------------
