(I tried to tell that to some one as well.  Centripital force is a force along a curve!)

Shazam ripped open the panel on his right, Chip asking if he could get control reminded him that maybe he could.  Shazam reached for the com and pushed the little 'talk' button.  "Well, I have an idea...  Maybe I can send some of that energy back to the engines, but you'll have to tell me where I'm pointing..."  Shazam was still aware that his men were under heavy fire and that he could be obliterated at any second, but he felt very comfortable messing with wires that could cut off his life support.

Hokay...  Blue or red was the hot wire?  Maybe I can just bypass it using some other wires...  Yellow is a breaker in the same system, if I can just find another...  AH HA!  Shazam found himself a grey wire to release the fuel hatch.  He quickly leaned over and scratched some of the rubber off with his fingernail.  Getting a good peice pulled back, he grabbed onto and ripped it off exposing the golden wires within.

"I'm glad I don't have to mess with that red wire, couldn've killed myself.  The red might have been part of the power that goes into my life-support.  Luckilly, I can just burn the fuel by opening the hatch for the engine.  It should burn automatically for exhaust, and If all goes well, I'll just fly in a straight line from where-ever it is I let the fire spout out..."  Shazam, almost talking to himself, told chip about his little idea, hoping that Chip would have something to add.

"Well, that sounds fine to me, just let me get over there with my men...  They should provide cover for your guys...  I can't tell what those things are yet, but man, they are furocious...  Looks like they're spouting out some kind of repeating cannon fire...  Maybe a bunch of B-wings?"  Chip queried...

"I tried to get a glimpse of 'em, but they were past me before I got a chance to see 'em.  By the looks of it, everyone is still alright though.  My guys have got some distance on them...  Just give me a couple more seconds to get all these little buddies nice and connected, and then I'll be able to use my yellow and grey like a switch.  I'm just ganna hook them into my trigger intstead of my throttle.  Throttle is full of wires..."

(This should be interesting, yes Chip?)

"Can you still steer? I'll get infront of you and you can just follow me by visual." Chip glanced up at his scanners, then down at his threat display. Shazam was only one click away now, and Chip would be infront of him soon. He started to drop his throttle some, so that he wouldn't completely overshoot.

"Sure thing." Shazam was waiting, still moving forward some to keep from becoming a stationary target, but it would've been easy to blast such a slow, straight moving thing anyway.

Chip eased in, and dropped in a quarter of a click infront of Shazam's nose. "See me? I'm right infront of you, zig-zaging a bit."

      "Yeah, I got ya."

"Alright, just guide on me." Two bolts passed Chip's canopy. "Gene, can you make sure this sucker doesn't catch me? I'm gonna look pretty juicy here for a minute..."

"Roger that Chip, come about .045 degrees to help me engage." Gene replied. Releasing the grip on his flight stick long enough to crack his knuckles, he watched as Chip's fighter came about slightly. As expected the NR X-Wing followed suit, making the rookie mistake of focusing too much on his target and ignoring his surroundings.

Easing on the etheric rudder pedal, and rotating his craft Gene slipped easily in behind the enemy fighter. The X-wing's astromech must have gotten the pilots attention, because as soon as Gene's lasers locked on, the X-Wing banked sharply left.

Killing his throttle to sharped the turn, Gene gave chase to the fleeing fighter. "You're clear for now Chip." Gene announced over the comm channel. "Panda, watch my six, I'm going after him."

A double click came over the comm to signify Panda's acknowledgement. Peeking over his shoulder, Gene saw his wingman's Assault Gunboat slip in to the left and slightly behind his.

Returning his focus towards the X-Wing, which was now desparately juking and banking in an attempt to throw off his pursuer., Gene fed more power to the engines, draning off some of his shields. But that's what Panda is there for He reassured himself.

The distance between himself and the NR fighter closed, and Gene finally got his crosshairs settled on the X-Wing. Squeezing the trigger, he sent round after round of green energy pounding into the fighter's back.

The X-wing tried futily to evade, but it was too late. A bright supernova of gas expanded, then disappeared as the X-wing exploded. Banking hard to his port side, Gene caught a glimpse of the battle between the big ships.

The Overlord was spouting flames on one side, but appeared stable enough. The Devastator looked unphased as it hammered away at the MC-40. The two CR-90 Corvettes were nowhere to be seen, presumebly destroyed by the two ISDs. The Nebulan B was in a few different pieces, as the tropedo runs of Three-Flight and the pounding it took fro theOverlord overwhelmed the outgunned frigate.

Checking his radar Gene found that the skies were mostly clear of NR fighters.

A new voice suddenly came over his ships comm system. "Two-flight and Three-FLight, this is Denethor, all capable craft rejoin One-Flight at the objective."

Swinging his craft around to once again face the planet, Gene clicked his comm switch twice to acknowledge.

(Well done Gene)

Chip guided Shazam's wounded craft back to the nearest cruiser with a hanger he could find.

Chip had to get clear of Shazam flight path because once Shazam fired the trigger he would fly in a direct line to his target.  A couple minutes of careful preperation and timing made them miss thier target by only a couple of meters, but the tractor beam did the rest of the work.

"Keep watch over my gus until I can get into another fighter here.  I'll see you later, man."  Shazam thanked Chip for going out of his way to lead him back to safety.  He was mostly modest though, leaving him with, "Watch your butt..."

Shazam was slowly pulled into the hanger and made a soft landing upon the floor with a 'thud'.  Some engineers half walked, half ran to his figher, a large claw connected to some kind of turning machine in one man's hand that resembled the "Jaws of Life."  Shazam looked around at the edges of his windows and realized that there were intense burn marks surrounding his seal to the cockpit.  They appeared to be burned intenselly enough to have melted.

Shazam threw his head back against the head cushion of his chair; they were ganna have to pull him out...

Gene's craft shuddered as he hit the atmosphere once again. The effects was much greater this time, as he entered the atmopshere at full throttle. Red flames began to form against his front shields as he rocketed towards the surface.

Checking his radar, he saw that Panda was keeping pace with him, still in covering position back and to his port side. Also on the radar were the familiar green blips from the IFF transponders of One-Flight, and the yellow blips of the freighters they were escorting. Unfortunately, swarming around them was a mess of red blips...Republic and THDF fighters.

The surface was suddenly before him as his gunboat cleared the cloud level. Pulling back hard on his flight yoke, Gene was pressed back into his seat as gravity sent all the blood from his head to his toes.

Gotta remember to dial-up that internal compensator next time  Gene reminded himself. Space fighting required him to turn it down, or the consant rolling and spinning would disorient him...ending in a very nasty, very firey end.

"Two Flight and Three Flight, this is Denethor," a voice crackled over the comm, "Freighters have landed at the target. Clear the skies and prepare to move to secondary targets."

Adjusting his flight path by about 5 degrees, Gene's gunboat shot towards the closest of the few remaining enemy fighters.

"Hey Three! Gene you aren't leaving without us are you?" Chip's voice came over the comm. Turning to look at around 7 o'clock, Gene saw Chip's and Jayzon's gunboats drop through the clouds. "Form up on me. Standard attack formation."

Easing back his throttle, Gene pulled back on his flight stick and rose to settle gently in behind and to the left of Chip. Jayzon was directly opposite of him, with Panda closing the diamond formation in the back.

Jayzon's voice echoed over the comm, "Good hunting fellas. Let's make this short and sweet."

In the history of the Empire, it was a particularly terrifying task to be the bearer of bad news to ones Commander... especially is the commander was a Dark Jedi. Today hopefully was not going to be a bad day for Captain Astoth

Striding nervously across the bridge of the Devastator Astoth approached the man gazing out the front viewport, watching intently as the Republic MC-40a blossomed into a brilliant fireball. A pang of remorse resounded in Astoth's conscious as he witness 1900 lives vanish in an instant.

As if reading his thought, Vice Admiral Japheth Cappadocious, Naval Commander in Chief turned and addressed him. "You have something for me Captain?"

Saluting, Astoth nodded in acknowledgement. "Admiral, the Republic task force has been routed. A few of their starfighters managed to escape to hyperspace, but all captial ships were destroyed."

Turning and heading for the ship's holomap, Japheth brought up their location. "Have you determined their exit vectors?"

"Yessir, our analysis determined that they will exit hyperspace at Fondor."

Japheth's eyes widened. "We have less than 8 hours to complete our mission here." Turning his back on Astoth, he headed towards the communications officer.

"Sir, if I may..what do you mean 8 hours?" Astoth tentatively inquired.

"Fondor is the site of a major New Republic shipyard Captain. with Thyferra under attack, they will send at least half their fleet here in the hopes of defeating us. HALF their fleet would destroy us before we even had a chance to leave."

Turning to address the communications officer, Japheth asked, "Any news from our planetary squadrons and freighters?"

Avoiding the Admirals piercing gaze, the young woman replied, "Yessir. Cheif Warrant Officer Denethor just reported in. Their freighter group has docked with the bacta facility. They are cleaning up the last of the remaining THDF fighters now."

"Good. Inform the Squadron leaders that they are to dispatch half of their squadron to commence the attack on the spaceports. This operation is not moving fast enough."

"Yessir." The comm tech replied, turning back to her console to complete her task.

Admiral Japheth returned to his original spot, staring out the front viewport. The MC-40 was now just a dead hulk hovering in free-fall. All atmosphere had burned up or dissipated in the vacuum, extinguishing the fires. Japheth suddenly was aware of a presence behind him.

"You are dismissed Captain Astoth." he said.

"Yessir, thank you Admiral." Turning quickly, Astoth retreated aas quickly as he could from the imposing presence of the Dark Jedi.

Left alone to his thoughts, Japheth mentally crossed his fingers that they could get out of here before the NR fleet arrived...

Whooping for joy as Three-flight destroyed the last R-41 of the THDF compliment, Gene shook his head to clear the sweat from his brow. Bringing his noise around, Gene formed up once again behind and to the left of Chip

"Head's up boys," Chip announced to the flight, "New orders from the Admiral. Three-Flight is to proceed to the spaceport and commence attack upon it."

Smiling, Gene activated his voice mic, "Time to blow sh*t up sir?"

"haha, yes Gene. And this time they can't shoot back...which is nice for a change. Alright Three's lets get to it. Bring all craft to sector 8 dash 24, point 3-5. Accelerate to full throttle."

Complying with their leader's orders, Kaph Squadron's Three Flight zoomed off.

Chip throttled up his gunboat and switched his shields to the bottom of his craft. He'd learned a few lessonsat the battle of Ugron, and wasn't about to let hidden gun emplacements blast the bottom of his craft out from under him. He still remembered some of the halucinations he'd had after getting shot down... Course there had been a good side to it: he'd killed the first man on his "list." What was he up to now, three down? Something like that. So, two left. They might have been dead already. Fighter pilots shot down or something. Or they could be living perfectly peaceful lives on any planet in the galaxy. But ah well. Chip had gotten about half, and he'd never expected to find any. If he ever managed to find those last two, then he could finaly end all this madness, and go see Sarah once again...

Chip could see some of the massive parabolic dishes at the spaceport up ahead. Their target was going to be the hangars first; make sure that any NR craft that might be left never had the chance to take off. That might have to be postponed, depending on the amount of ground and turret fire. "Alright three, shields to the bottoms of your craft. LEt's break formation some, remember to fly erratically: a straight path will mark you as gravy. Panda and I are taking the hangar to the right, I want Jay and Gene on the left. Soon as your assigned hangar goes, start clearing any turrets and ground emplacements."

Three voices came back with a chorus of affirmatives. Chip switched over to his torpedoes. He didn't have much left, but what was there would do just fine. Now if he could just get a direct hit on the fuel storage...

This time Shazam wasted no time getting back into action.  He almost sprinted to the deck office to ask to see someone about getting into a different craft.  He was immedietly sent to an officer standing at the bridge, an officer by the name of Gibbens.

"You need a craft, heh?" Gibbens chuckled at his idea and tried to send him away.  Shazam didn't wanna let it go this time though, something about this place, a lurking danger, Shazam could feel it...  He wouldn't let his men face it alone, whatever it was...

"I'll take anything."  Shazam said it abruptly but sternly...  Gibbens stopped chuckling.  The scruffy officer walked over to a panel with two men sitting opposite eachother.

"Trevor, what do we have in stock?"  The man known as Trevor recognized the voice and didn't bother to give a glance to either of them...  Instead, he pushed some buttons and brought up a depot screen.  Down the left side thier was a list of fully functional aircraft, on the left, in need of repair.

"As you can see, our functionin craft are down to the bare minimum.  I'm afraid we won't be lending you one..."  He turned away and began to walk away.

"Then we'll repair one."  Shazam said, staring after the officer.  The man turned and walked back to the console and checked down the side of the screen for repairable craft.  He looked back up at Shazam with pearcing eyes.

"Choose one."  Shazam stared at him for a moment, then looked down at the screen, Trevor sat still as a statue.

"Which one will take the least amount of time to get ready?"  The man clicked another button and a new list of some of the same ships came up.  On the top was a Tie Defender, next to it said 'Pending' and '40 Minutes-1 Hour-'.  "I'll take it.  Also, I'll be making some modifications..."

                                      *****

The hum of the engine was vibrant but callous to the silence of space.  Shazam couldn't help but feel some sense of urgency as he pushed the throttle of the ship forward.  The fighter was so toned, beautiful and sleek in everyway but extremely furocious.

Apparently the man in the ship had died from un-filtered air...  Otherwise, the ship was in perfect condition, brand new as he had heard, but broke into the point where the man had been making his own adjustments...  Shazam could feel the sensitivity in the controls as he guided himself away from the hanger, graduelly gaining speed.

The sound of the engines died away as the vacume inclosed around him and the planet his men had been sent to filled his veiw...  A dread entered his soul, as if it, whatever it was, was already happening.  It's beggining he told himself.  He held back no fears and let them run rampant in his mind, his imagination getting carried away with him, he wasn't sure?...

Chip cycled through his threat display, targeting the main fuel depot. He set his torpedoes to dual fire, and waited while the HUD targeting reticule glowed yellow. It wouldn't take long, being a stationary target. But what worried Chip was the lack of defenses. He just couldn't get over how strange it was. No turrets, no fighters, not even sucking old rust buckets. They had to have defenses. It would have been absolutely stupid of them to not have defenses. But where were they?

The HUD turned red. Chip waited a moment more, then called to his wingmen. "Fire." Five blue streaks left the gunboats. Apperently Chip had been the only one to set his to dual fire. The torpedoes zipped along in slow torpedoe fashion. They went over the runway, the hangars, and straight into point marked as the main fuel storage. The torpedoes detonated as soon as they hit the tanks... And that was all. No massive explosion. No rush of exposed fuel. Only...

...A hail of turret fire as the hidden turbolasers raised themeselves from the duracrete pads behind 3-flight.

Chip yanked the stick to the left, frantically trying to get a hangar or something between himself and the cluster of turrets. "Scatter! SCATTER! Everybody scramble for the tree line, NOW!" Chip zigzagged over the duracrete pads, trying to avoid the fire. One bolt contacted with the underside of his fusalage, while a second nipped his wing. He could see his wingmen heading balls-out for the tree line, seemed like most of the fire was directed at Chip. That is, until yet another turret rose from the pad directly underneath Jayzon...

"Jay, get oughta there! He's right..." The turret gunner blasted straight up in the air, the bolts tearing a hole in Jayzon's shields and blasting the wings off. What was left of the fusalage went hurtling into the trunks of the closest trees, erupting in a huge fireball that burnt the treeline like a case of napalm. There wasn't any time for an ejection...

Shazam heard an eruption of frantic yells and screams over the com, chaos had erupted only moments after his ominous thoughts had been dismissed.  Shazam couldn't go any faster, he was already being pulled into the planet's atmosphere and was pushing full throttle...  He could only hope that there were enough left to help him take down the fighters when they came.

The defender seemed to tense with every shrill cry that rang out from the com into the cockpit, as well as Shazam's ever  tightening grip on the controls.  The atomosphere seemed to be dense with smoke, but Shazam could feel his imagination getting a hold of his reality so he quickly locked back down on the radar, waiting for something to pop-up.  He could only assume they were in certain spots, the pilots had been split up into seperate divisions to attack different bases...  Then again, they were all probably being hit by surprise attacks...  He needed to find his flight though.

"Flight two, flight two.  Report flight two..."  Shazam continued to say this about every ten seconds for the twenty minutes it took him to get through the atmosphere.

Shazam found the sky again though, and made his calls even more urgent every time.  The defender was moving fast now, the panels feeling the pressure of the gravities full fury weighing down on it.  He descended faster and faster, slowly leveling himself out to the landscape of the planet, creating a horizontal orbit around the areas he would investigate.  Chip should be near my men, or atleast I'd assume they'd follow him, reguardless of positioning orders, Shazam thought to himself.  Everyone always gets scattered about when they are sent to different areas like this, especially when they're only about fifteen minutes from eachother...

Shazam directed his ship towards a place called 'Svendora Space Port.'

As he landed at Svendora Space Port, he heard one of his flight members, Jack Nebulax, screaming over the comm. "I'm hit, I'm hit..." was all he heard from him as he saw in horror his comrade's fighter streak down through the atmosphere.

************************************************

Meanwhile, in that same fighter spiraling down to the planet below, Jack Nebulax struggled with the ejection seat. He yelled into his comm "I can't eject" many times, but it was useless. The comm, as well as most of his cockpit, had been destroyed and was either still in space or heading down to the surface with him.

Finally, as he caught sight of a large mountain that his crippled fighter continued to head for, he got the ejection seat working. With one quick burst, he flew out of his fighter as it crashed into the mountain. Pieces of his fighter were everywhere. Now all he had to worry about was getting down safely. "Man, that was so close," he said outloud as he let out a deep breath he took as he ejected the craft.

**************************************************

Back at the landing platform, Shazam did the same thing - let out his breath as he saw his comrade was safe. For the moment, anyway.

Shazam felt he could do the work that needed to be done, he was already sorting it out in his head.  Three major space ports, the rest is connected to them, shut down the space ports, cut off...  Well that had already been sorted out in the breifing, he supposed.  Thinking back to what he knew, he realized the mission again, but just as breif as he'd heard it in the prelude leading up to his descent into the planet's atmosphere.  So far he'd only been through one ship, and it didn't look like he was going to be needing it anyways, he thought to himself thinking of the fighters that would be arriving any moment if this was indeed counter-defense effort of some kind.

Yes, a counter-defense he told himself.  The best defense is the best offense, so we'd better take control quickly, the thoughts were scrambling eachother in his head as the atmosphere became less dense and he felt some real gravity pulling on him.

Shazam checked his radar to see what he would have for a team, but only then did he realize what type of threat view he would have as well.  The turrents had popped up in the perfect spots, "Don't fire until you can see the white's of thier eyes," came to Shazam's mind; Shazam was now low enough to reach the canopy and see the foliage below the treeline that so thickly covered the small area.

Shazam purposefully let the ship drift a little, although the controls were so tight that he barelly had to touch them to let the ship 'drift'.  He felt that an angle was needed to come in right...  He was hearing conversations going on in the back of his thoughts, something about trying to escape up the middle...  Something connected.

A bottle-neck, that's what they were talking about.  Chip was smart, he could already tell they were going to lead an enemy counter so he was leading his men into the bottleneck of turrents.  The space port was basically a single track running along a mile's distance, seven large hangers and loading docks ran along side with a series of turrents lined it simetrically.  The hanger bay was in the center of the mile long runway, two runways really.  One running northwest, the other southeast, and the hanger was the launching bay that seperated the two.  The deep whole looked to go far down into a series of passage ways in the base.  Two large steal doors with corresponding teeth to fit eachother blocked the entrance leading down into the cave of fighters and military aircraft.  Two hanger bays sat beside and above that led out onto a taxi highway.

As he came closer, he could realize even better how perfect something like that would be...  Hopefully Chip was thinking the same thing, because if they started zigzagging then the turrents could take control and the fighters would be aloud to launch and gain a position.  As long as they could stay together, there shouldn't be a problem with it, Shazam thought to himself; the engines were emitting a loud rumble now that sound had been fully returned to the air...

Shazam reached the edge of the taxi-way as Chip's group was getting ready to run through the center of the bottle neck.  A silent tension was building up within the two flight leaders althought they hadn't even discussed what was going on.  The curve that led up to the fairway of roads and hanger bays was just far enough that the turrents would not be given a clear target until they would actually be seen coming around the thickly leaved trees.  There were several other turrents posted in the same semetrical position as those lining the double runway, except they ran farther north and south of the oringals, just spaced about half a mile apart.  Shazam couldn't imagine what was happening at the other airports if this base was so 'stacked'.

However, he couldn't image all the turrents up on a normal day of aircraft trade and transfer, the turrents would create a slight hazard for the landing and launching aircraft as well as a bit of a distraction for anyone in the area...  Thus they were hidden, for safety and satisfaction, he figured.  The pilot's hands gripped the controls a little tighter for a moment, then relaxed as he felt a surpreme rush of motion erupt around him.

Chip's group, which included both Flight 3 and Blah as well as Merkeva, came around the corner at full speed, flying at just about medium height to cut the other turrents fire out of the equation.  Coming at an angle would prevent certain turrents from firing as long as the fighters were level with them.  The group formed two very tightly nit V's.  Shazam pulled in a tight circle that emcompassed half of the mile, making him level with the underground chamber...  Several A-Wings at the ready, they would be faster than the gun boats and be very able to take advantage of thier apparent 'lack of speed.'  Shazam couldn't help but think of the destruction that would come about from such an easy target retical...

The team of imperials were at full throttle, making the occasional bumps and quick movements to avoid getting taken down by a turbolaser or two...  The gang passed through the center of the runways without being touched do to the lack of mobility in the turrents...  Four were only able to be fired at a time because of the bad locationing and very slow movements of the twisting heads...

The A-wings were launched immedietly after the group passed over, and the turrent fire was ceased, interupted by the fighter intercession.  The enemy aircraft formed a little X pattern, picking up speed.  One half of the X raised about twenty meters above the other, and the bottom half sat at a slight tilt, ready to seperate, chase down and destroy any opposing craft.

Shazam took advantage of his oportunity and swung in from his dubious angle, sweeping in right behind the A-wings.  He linked his ion's and normal cannon's and took aim at the poor little bugger stuck in the middle.  He sent out a shot, then another; two right behind eachother in a perfectly straight line.  The bolts hits smack dab in middle of the rear, cause the back of the A-wing to pick up for a moment...  Charcoal black smoke came pouring out; the small agile fighter slammed into the craft sitting below and to the right, which in turn clipped the one following it.  The bottom right half of the X had suddenly been faulted by a couple of single linked blows.

Since the runways were surrounded by turrents, the only way to go was up, but the second half of the X was in a fall-back position, slowly letting the bottom half of the formation pass underneath, and then that half would slowly rise.  Basically, the man who designed it was too much of an artist, and not enough of a strategist.  The formation was too fancy and took too long.  An imperial fighter taking such easy control of a group of about fourteen A-wings was just shameful...

The small group of fighters made a few quick jerks to try and regain control but fell to the lack of space provided to them.  The center fighter suddenly burst into a firey explosion as Shazam let out another couple of burst to the bottom left side of the coreographed formation.  Instead of creating a little chain reaction and beating down the aircraft next to it, it simply dropped and skidded across the runway, peices of it flinging off into dozens of little peices...

The concrete road ended grassy plains and random turrents seemed to fill the void in a sudden and dramatic contrast to what Shazam had been taking advantage of only moments ago...  Shazam pulled out from behind them and retreated to find Chip's group that had thankfully made it through untouched by turrent nor aircraft...

Shazam suddenly remember Jack.  Where was Jack?

Chip was having enough of a time dealing with the fact that Jayzon was dead. But when he heard the crys about Jack being stranded on the ground, the news slammed him like a brick in the gut. The first thing that flashed to his mind was memories of Ugron. Chip had lost two or three TIE's there, and he and Shazam had even been stranded on the suface of the planet, behind rebel lines. Sithspawn, Chip still had nightmares about that... There wasn't a snowball's chance in Hell that Chip was going to leave Jack high and dry.

He switched his gunboat's comm systems to transmit on handheld commlink frquencies. "Jack, this is Chip. Are you there? Are you alive? Look, we're coming to get you. Can you give us some coordinates?"

Nothing. He must not have a commlink on. That had to be it. That had to be the reason! Chances were that Jack probably had a concussion, maybe some broken bones. If they could get to him before the rebs did he ought to be fine. But the locals would probably be all over the crash site in no time flat, enjoying their sweat revenge. Chip looked down at the ground, and sure enough there was a crowd of about a dozen and a half locals brandishing some sort of spiked poles and blaster pistols, running full tilt for the smoking trees that marked Jack's crash site.

He brought his gunboat around about twenty degrees to the right, and nosed his guns down just behind the crowd. He poured cannon bolts at the people, sweeping his aim up through the crowd. The heavy fighter cannons didn't actually hit more than a handfull, but the energy and heat radiated out to cook most of the group alive. Heh. That should hamper their efforts a bit. Stupid rebels. In the back of his mind, Chip vaguely wondered if any of those locals had been people on his special "list?" Ah well. He'd never know: they were so horribly burnt that noone would ever be able to identify them visually. Chip chuckled somewhat when he thought about what the viewing at their funerals would be like.

"Gene, Panda, I need you to watch our backs. Shazam, Do you have any visual on the crash? It's not going to be long before more locals start heading over to get their filthy hands on Jack..."

Jack suddenly got up to the sound of laser blasts. He heard the footsteps of the locals drawing closer admist the screams of what sounded like people burning. What could he do? Just then, he looked at his hand. Despite being covered in blood, and his arm feeling like it wasn't even there, he saw a comlink in it. "Smashed," he said. "Great. What now?"

Then he realized something. The spare power pack in the gunboat. If he could reach it, avoid being captured or killed, and get up high enough, he might be able to send a clear transmission if he got the comlink working.

He started to run in the direction of his destroyed craft. "Wait a second. The footsteps are coming from the crash. I got to get out of..."

"Here," an angry native said. "You're not going anywhere. Now get moving," he said with a strong voice.

Jack thought quickly. He still had a small standard-issue scoutrooper pistol in his belt. In a blink of an eye, he pulled out the pistol and shot the angry native. "Maybe I should join the DJO someday," he said as he rushed off, holding his numb arm.

Shazam circled around the airport once more, before finding Chip's group getting ready to make an attack run.  He'd managed to pass over the crash sight to find a body laying outside of it.  Shazam's heart stopped for a moment before he realized it was one of the locals...  Jack must have run off, Shazam thought, he could see some light tracks as he flew along at about medium throttle.  The turrents were still raised to the threat was still very real.

Chip's ominous voice suddenly pinched the silence,"What did you find?" He said it almost demandingly.  Chip didn't like to see good men go down, his or any others...

Shazam paused for a moment, falling into formation behind the group, they were getting ready for an attack run, through the bottleneck of course.  "I assume he's fine.  For now..."  Shazam breathed it out, hesitantly at that...

Going through the bottleneck and forcing the fighters to come after them would prevent turrent fire along the runways...  The tactical art had been so heavilly flawed that it was imparing the defenses of the seemingly undeafable fortress.  Shazam decided he'd come in on the runway, but then turn of at the taxi ways and see if he could prevent and other aircraft from getting out.  As long as they could keep the air control in thier favor, and keep the defense inmobile, it would be a simple,'pick and shoot'...

Shazam's thoughts were interupted by Chip's weary and emphatic voice once again...  "We need to get Jack back up here with us..."  It was no longer a command, but a fact.  Shazam didn't say anything, but simply looked down at his display.  The taxi was was a simple side course taken by launch and landing aircraft.  They would follow the pattern of thin lines, and then be slowly led into hangar bays where they would be loaded or unloaded...  The process seemed long in head, the swift motion of winds encircling his craft as he split through them made a wispy noice that relaxed him.  The silence was tense as always...  Shazam had the sneaking feeling that Jack was up to something.  It drove Chip crazy when he didn't know what was going on...

When Jack made it back to the wrecked gunboat, he found about a dozen or two bodies burned to a crisp. "Chip," Jack sighed. "Figures. This looks like his work."

He searched through his wrecked gunboat for any equipment left behind. A medkit, a blaster, a few food bars, and a recharger unit. "Great. I can use some of this stuff," he said as he put it all into a bag as he left for his trek up the hillside.

He ran into a few dangers - wild animals, rivers, a few canyons, all sorts of things. Half way up, he felt a stabbing pain in his right arm. "A blaster mark," he said. "Must have been shot by a native when I was knocked out."

He continued on his long walk. About three-fourths of the way up, he stopped to eat a ration bar and drink some Tatooine blue milk which gave him energy. Still nothing cured the pain which had taken over his numb right arm.

The second he reached the hilltop, he tore open his bag and got out the recharged comlink he had found. Putting in the private channels for both Kaph Squadron and the Navy, he gave out his distress signal.

"Can anybody here me?" he began. "I'm about a mile away from the crash site on top of a mountain. Can anybody here me? I repeat, I'm on top of a mountain and severly injured..."

(Are there mountains on Thyferra?  Don't know too much about the planet myself...  Oh well, lets just go with it.)

A mountain?  What the hell?  Shazam stared down at the little blinking light on the comlink.  The signal wasn't very strong, some wiring problems probably, but someone was talking about a mountain.  It sounded like Jack, but what the hell...  A mountain?  Jack hadn't crashed that far from them, was he halucinating?  Shazam certainly hoped not...

The channel started to become clearer, and he could hear Jacks cracking voice, "Hello...  Anyone out there, I'm on the top of a mountain somewhere, about a mile from the crash site..."  Chip's voice rang in suddenly...

"This is Chip, we're coming to get you pal..."  There was silence...  "Jack, can you hear me?  Jack!"  Electric static filled the com for a moment, then it returned to silence.

"What do you think?"  Shazam quearied.  For a couple of moments, the two of them pondered on the same thought; was Jack halucinating.  The two of them could look around and be pretty sure there weren't any mountains...  "Maybe it's not a mountain..."  Shazam didn't quite know where he was going with it, but he felt like he was on the right track.

"He's in the airport," Chip said.  Shazam blinked, trying to understand how he could walk into the airport...  "He must have crashed near a turret.  All the turrets are connected underground, how do you think they got us so easilly.  Apparently they're mechanically controlled though.  It's the only way I can think he would get into the air port."

"he must be on the top of the tower or something," Shazam thought to himself.  However, now he felt like he was getting off base...  "Actually...  Maybe he's in the airport, except, he's not on top..."  Silence filled the com again.

It all made sense in an instant, all the turrets had to be connected underground in order for maintenance to be done on them, Jack must have crawled into one of the turrets thinking it was a cave?  Shazam wasn't quite sure, but their was a steep incline on the opposite end of where the imperials had been making thier attack runs...

Shazam got an image in his head of Jack crawling into some underground chambers...  How goofy would that look?  Shazam almost laughed at the thought of his friend struggling through enemy territory, dying...  It had never occured to him, but he wondered what the rebels thought them?  The pilots anyways...  Shazam realized how stupid and cruel such a thought was and dismissed it.  The rest of his thoughts collected together and announced unanimously...

"He's underground somewhere, we'll have to find him...  Who knows how deep that hole goes..."

Jack hoped his signal had been heard. He stood there for a second or two, waiting for his rescuers. He took a few steps to look down the mountain, but before he was able to see anything, he fell into a hole in the mountain and landed in a cave.

"Hold on a second," he said. "This isn't a mountain. This cavern seems odd - it doesn't even look like a real one." He took a few steps back because of a noise he heard and stumbled into something hard - a metal rectangle sticking out of the floor. But this wasn't just a "metal rectangle."

It was a door.

He walked through the door into another familiar place, and suddenly it clicked. He was in the captain's quarters of some type of bulk cruiser. A crashed bulk cruiser covered in plants and vegatation. Wow. It all made sense now - the steep drop was really a giant dent or cut in the surface of the ship. And the water he saw - it wasn't water, but fuel. Fuel of a broken-down ship stranded here for months. Or years. He didn't know.

He didn't care.

As he walked through more rooms, he stumbed upon a factory. Or at least what was left of one. Giant cranes no longer in use. Workers' consoles not powered up in what looked like a thousand years. And droids - such strange droids with reinforced armor and blasters. And then something else clicked. This ship was here for a long time. This ship dated back to the Clone Wars.

And those strange droids were Super Battle Droids used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

On the ground he spotted blood. Puddles of dried up blood. Apparently this ship crashed here after a major battle. Rust-stained white armor was everywhere - what was left of an Old Republic clone unit. He had studied the Clone Wars as a kid, and admired the designs of weapons and starships from the time. He picked up a set of a clone commander's uniform. He stuffed it in his bag - to keep it as a reminder.

Before long, he felt a stabbing pain in his arm again. "I should call for help..." was all he could say before he was knocked out by a stun charge.

(Like it?)

(Hokay, uh...  Well, might as well go along with what I said before, I'll hit a dead end, but why don't you just meet me there?)

Shazam couldn't remember the last time he'd actually taken his time to find a power source to a major system like an Airport, but now he seemed to have all the time in the world.  The turrets were having a hell of a time sorting themselves out, assuming they were run by some kind of system, and since they were encumbered by the ways of reasonable science they would not allow themselves to fire unless cleared by the other turrents.  It was complex but reasonable.  The rebels were trying hard to stay up to date, but apparently hadn't given a beta test to these particular items.  In fact, they'd decided to install an entire line of them.

Shazam made his way to the outer rim of the airport, repositioning himself so that he would have a fair enough angle to judge how the system was actually connected.  Looking from the left side, there were a series of taxi ways connected to the main runways, the turrets lining the sides.  Surveying the landscape, he saw some odd buildings just off the horizon.  Shazam thought to himself, what were those buildings... Most of the time an airport has an independant source of power as well as a backup in case of some accident or malfunction in its electrical highways.  Assuming that those buildings were the backup facility incase of an emergency, Shazam sought out to find the real power source, the something that would force the rebels to switch to a backup power system; Chip's group was making another run through the turret covered track.

Shazam thought for a moment...  Maybe they're underground as well?  If they were underground then they would have a problem, because there was no way Shazam would willingly just jump out in the middle of a crowded rebellion airport.  He could imagine the surprise on the smug faces of his enemy as he piled through the hanger bays and passageways, making his way underground and coming to a large boiler.  Shazam slapping his head at the thought of reaching the heater system instead of the energy source; boilers, he wasn't even sure anyone ran on those anymore, but some advanced systems still used boilers for other purposes than heat.

Either way, they needed to cut off the energy so they could shut down the turrets.  If they could get the turrets down then it would just make the takeover instantaneous.  Just gotta find the power sources, Shazam thought to himself over and over...

Chip circled around the crash site. He could see some mountains in the distance, but nothing close enough for Jack to have gotten to. Maybe he had been seeing things? Chip made another orbit. Hmm, there were a few hills. Maybe Jack had meant one of those? He decided to do more thorough scans of the hills. The first two had nothing remarkable, no people. But the third seemed metallic and hollow... Huh? He focused his scanners and repeated the pass.

"Shazam, this is Chip. You wanna come over this way and confirm what my scanners are telling me? This one hill is two klicks from you at 284 degrees from the planetary north. I can't quite figure this out..."

      "Why, what is it?"

      "I'm not sure."

      "Alright, just a sec."

Chip made another pass, until Shazam confirmed the findings. "It's like there's some old, abandoned ship. Almost looks like a veteran of the clone wars. Think that's where Jack is?"

"Maybe." Chip switched channels. "This is Kaph 3-1, calling any Army support available, over."

An assualt transport responded. "This is Gold-5, we've got twenty troopers on board. What's the problem, Kaph?"

Chip explained the situation, asking if the army boys could help scout the cruiser. "I'll set down with you, Jack'll recognize me. Chances are he's probably got some head injury, may give him an itchy trigger finger."

"Roger that. Meet you at the coordinates you sent."

Shazam and Chip set down at the edge of the "hill." Chip let the rest of his flight know what was going on, and that they were to give the rescue operation air cover. Chip opened his cargo compartment, and pulled out his belt of grenades first. He'd gotten himself a nice collection at Imperial Center, including a handful of frags, some flashbangs, and a few white phosphorous or "willy-peters." Next was his blaster pistol, some first aid gear, and the shotgun that he loved so much. Shazam walked over with his own gear, just as the army transport landed.

(This'll work I suppose, I'll just save my idea for the end, of this base anyways...  *Turns up 'blues traveler')

Shazam felt the airport pulling at him, but he ignored the feeling, it would have to wait.  Shazam told Blah to keep watch on the airport while they were gone, Shazam figured he wouldn't be gone for more than an hour or so.  Any longer than that and he'd be straying from the mission; Shazam wasn't quite sure what the rebellion could do in a half hour, that is as long as Blah and a couple others made sure there wasn't any aeronotical uprising...

All Shazam had for gear was a Pilot Pack, a Ryyk Blade, and a his duel Kylan-3 Heavy Blaster Pistol.  Those were just the things he carried on him at all times though.  He had two extra things he'd managed to grab a hold of though; IR-5 Intimidator Repeating Blaster Pistol was in an extra holster, and he had a couple of Nacht 5 Smoke Grenades in his Pilot Pack.  Shazam glanced over at Chip who was considerably loaded for a pilot, he liked to be just a little safer than everyone else, he thought to himself.  However, Chip was wise, but he was also anxious.  Shazam was anxious to get back into the defender and get this base taken care of, but he supposed that they'd better make sure to have Jack before it was too late.

After the little scuddle with the natives that Chip had taken care of considerably well, they seemed to be pulling out all the stops.  The Army men seemed to be surprised as well at the amount of ammo the two Navy men were carrying.

Shazam had already taken off all of his flight accesories, as well as some of the protective gear that was required for safe travel in case of emergencies, and now he was only wearing some loose clothing.  He wore simple Navy outfitted pants held up by a belt, a sleevless jacket went over his figher vest, a few little gadgets stuffed inside,(comlink, couple of food packages, and some other casual items...), covered his body.  Underneath his fighter vest, he had a long sleeved white shirt with a spice companies name and emblem on the front, one of the designer T-shirts he'd picked up on vacation while hunting on Kubini.

Luckilly, they would not be in the heat, because otherwise Shazam would have most definetly fried.  Thyferra wasn't quite supernova hot, but it was a hell of a lot hotter than most of the places that the Navy men had been sent to in the past.  They could only assume it was a bit colder in the cave, they couldn't quite be sure as to how deep the cave went down just yet, but Shazam had the idea everything was connected in the area...  All part of an intricate system, he thought to himself, maybe that would work to thier advantage...

(Chip, you can kind of lead us in since you seem to have an idea of where we are, I'll post like regular reguardless of what's goin on though...)

Meanwhile inside the Clone Wars-era bulk cruiser, Jack suddenly remembered what had happened - the bulk cruiser, the droid factory, and then darkness. As he fully awoke, Jack realized that he had been drugged. He could have been out for hours, days, weeks, months, or even years depending on the amount of drugging.

"What - what happened?" Jack managed to say. No response. Either his capturer wasn't here, or he didn't respond on purpose. Jack managed to get up, and surprisingly the pain in his arm was gone. He looked down at his arm. His new arm, really.

Attached to a stump of flesh was a super battle droid arm, complete with blasters and all. It looked brand new as if he pulled it right of a battlefield during the Clone Wars. He had to be dreaming. "How the hell is this possible?" he screamed outloud.

"I'd thought you'd like it, Nebulax," a voice replied.

"Who are you, and how do you know who I am?" Jack cried out in disbelief.

"You don't remember me, do you Nebulax? I've known you for a while," the mysterious voice said. "Honestly, Jack, how can you not remember me? Back at Yaga Minor, before you joined the Vast Empire. Durga the Hutt payed big money for you."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Jack asked.

Before he could get his answer, he heard the sound of blaster fire not to far away. The mysterious figure picked up a comlink. "Luhas? Derye? Are you there?"

Then he quickly remembered his super battle droid arm and it's two blasters. With a blinded shot, he blew the comlink apart. The man ran through a doorway, but before Jack could catch up he was gone.

He them heard the faint sound of a stormtrooper speaking into his comlink. "Let's check down here," was the only thing he heard. Then he yelled out a desparate cry, "Help!! I'm down here!!"

Scout groaned.  What the hell was going on? How could fuel tanks take a direct hit from a barrage of torpedoes? Things didn't quite fit here, and he didn't like it.  This stuff was hard, unlike the janitorial duty he had been on...

Never mind that, it's combat, now, and I need focus to stay alive, the thin line of smoke coming off his fighter told him that much.

"Chip, do you need support down there on the ground?"
"That's ok, we've got all we need right now. Just keep any craft off our heads," responded the flight leader.
"Sure thing, boss, I'll do what I can," scout replied, taking another look at the trees below.

Jack slowly walked in the direction that he heard the stormtroopers fire. As he walked closer, he saw two figures aproach from the shadows. Charging his droid arm, he prepared to fire.

"Stop!" came a cry from the shadows. Shazam and Chip had come to rescue him.

"Man, guys, am I glad to see you," Jack said in relief. "Thanks a whole lot."

"No problem," Shazam said. "Where did you get that arm?"

"Long story," Jack responded.

"Well, as long as you're okay, let's get out of here," Chip said.

As he ran out with Shazam, Chip, and the stormtroopers, he couldn't stop wondering about that man that gave him his new arm. As he made it to the medic shuttle, Jack spoke up.

"Hold on a sec," Jack said. "I have some unfinished buisness to attend to. You stormtroopers," Jack began, "come with me."

"Yes, sir," came the reply.

Shazam and Chip looked worried. "I'll be fine, guys. I just need to find out something."

"Okay," Shazam said as Jack rushed off with the stormtroopers back into the bulk cruiser.

Finally Chip said to Shazam, "I have a bad feeling about this..."

What had possesed Jack to run off back into a mysterious and ominous cave was a bit above Shazam at the moment.

Chip and Shazam looked at the entrance for a few moments, and then the two looked back at each other.  "Jack knows what he's doing," Shazam said, trying to condole Chip a little.  Chip nodded his head solemly, then glanced back at the cave.

He sat for a couple of seconds, then started to slowly shake his head.  He said, "He's going to be needing some backup."  Shazam couldn't help but grimace at the thought of entering the cave.  Sure, he had all of his equipment on, but he had a responsibilty to take care of at the airport.  There were still a couple of other major bases that were being taken down, and here they were sitting around picking thier battles.  Chip recognized the look on his face, and held up his fist for the 'pound it.'

"I know," Shazam said.  Chip, nodded and walked into the cave.  Shazam turned to the sky and smiledwrily; this is how it always worked, Shazam thought to himself.

Walking back to the defender, Shazam took a final look at the cave.  Things were going to happen, but atleast Chip would be at their heals.

                                      *****

Atleast it wasn't the normal army, Shazam told himself, he hadn't always had the greatest time letting the Army into the equation of a search and rescue.  Then again, the VE was a lot different then the other military venues, they seemed to have a lot more of a interdependance, and Shazam could respect that.  He left it at that.

By now, defender was high in the sky and slowly picking up speed.  The heat was immense when he had lifted off, however, mid-day was already passing, before long, the planet would be shrouded in darkness.  They needed to get things done quickly, he knew.

As long as business was being taken care of, Shazam would be happy, but the entire VE Navy had been almost idle in the area of the space port.

Now picking it up to about seventy-five percent throttle, Shazam was trying to ease the engine back into use, he approached yet again, the mile long track of concrete and steel.  The turrets were no more active then they had been before, and all that had happened was there seemed to be some movement on the ground.

Blah, as hospitable as he liked to be, didn't waste any ammo on those foolish enough to let thier guard down and attempt an escape.  Shazam admired his determination to destroy anything that was flying; like a rockstar trying to destory the drumset with his guitar.  Good man.

Making sure he was comfortable in his seat, Shazam pushed the the throttle back a little, bringing it to about sixty percent.  He made a quick fly-by of the airport, at a bit of a higher altitude than normal.  Shazam consistently felt like he was overlooking something when it came to fly-bys.  However, he always felt it was easier to see things when they were farther away.  So he flew high, very high.

Blah, continuing to sweep around the area, queried," What you up to?"  He sounded curious, but he seemed to have the tone of a man who could sense an idea being conceived.

"Well.  I'm not sure yet.  I keep thinking there's a factor that we just can't see.  Something easier, fast.  I mean, you'd think they'd have been doing something while we were just sitting around on our butts...  But they seemed to just be sitting on their butts too..."  There was silence.

"They're hiding something," he heard Blah say.  "It makes sense, they didn't move much because they don't want to avert our attention and have us seeing to thier little treasure bank..."  He chuckled vendictavly.

"I was trying to figure out earlier where thier power sources would be, ends up what I thought were back-up power stations..."  Shazam stopped.  His back-up energy!  He had it.  But he was just there...

"They were power stations..."  Chip had the main power source at his hands...  Shazam switched channels quickly to catch Chip.  Blah seemed to know what was going on.

He said, "It won't work, too much interference, it's that ship.  It's either got an active com jammer, or its just the immense mass of metal.  Either way, you'll be out of convo with anybody over there until there out."  Shazam lowered his head in defeat.

"Very well...  The least we can do here is find the backup generator..."

Jack, leading the stormtroopers, rushed into the destroyed droid factory. He heard the clank of uncompleted droids as his nemesis fled. For a moment, Jack caught sight of him behind a crane, and Jack quietly told one of the stormtrooper to blow up the crane.

"Yes, sir," came the equally quiet reply.

A heavy weapons specialist took out a portable missile launcher, and, with a quick blast, blew the crane apart. Still the mysterious man continued to run as the ship shook because of the explosion. "Wait a second," Jack said. "The ship shouldn't shake like this if it's embeded in the ground. Which means... he's headed for the cockpit!" Jack yelled.

They all ran in the direction of the cockpit. Lone behold, the cockpit door was shut and jammed. The door was blast-proof, it could even stand against a PLX-2 missile launcher.

Suddenly, with a roaring sound, the engines came to life as the ship slowly pushed out of the fake ground that had covered it. Soon, the ship, the pilot, Jack, and his group of stormtroopers were heading for space.

"If we get out of the atmosphere, the ship will detonate," Jack said. "This ship will break apart. We have to get out now!" Jack finished as he and his group headed for the escape pods. "I hope Shazam and Chip know about this," Jack thought...

(Hokay, another idea.  I'm just sayin this, but we need to get a bit more organized, because we are everywhere...)

Shazam's search for another power source was limited, and he couldn't help but feel a little failure slipping into his mind.  The base was basically defenseless because Blah and a couple of others got tired of sitting around and decided to go for the turrents themselves.  So, going on ahead and finding the second power source wasn't really an objective any more.  Shazam finally admitted it to himself.  "I'm bored."

However, to his surprise, 'bored' was almost like a magic word because he heard a loud blast coming from the north-east.  Shazam pulled the defender around to see something that was absolutely stunning.  For a second, it looked like the rocks were in the middle of having birth, but upon looking closer he realized there was an actual ship, an extremely large ship, rocketting out of a cavity in the rock.

Shazam was only stunned for a few moments before coming back to his senses.  Jack and Chip had been in there, what had become of them.  If Chip was still in the rock portion of the cave, he would surely of been burnt into a crisp.  Jack was more than likely inside the ship though, moving quickly seemed to suit him.

Blah made some obsenities into the com before he to realized that it was a ship.  The two of them jetted off; a few lone aircraft remained to guard the airport and wait for Army groups to come down and infiltrate the base.

Rocks were blown high in the air, slowly falling back to the ground.  The fire erupting from the sides of the craft were simply enormous, flares exploding out from underneath the craft signified the absolute size of the ship.  The fuel that had earlier encompassed the craft was now set ablaze by the awekard takeoff.  Over time, the rocks had slowly draped the ship if it weren't already covered, so it was being held back by natural forces...

Shazam couldn't quite tell what type of ship it was, but it seemed to be the second source of power to the airfeild, because any and all lights were suddenly dead.  The faint buzz of a backup generator could be heard at the airfeild, deep into the planets crust.

The ship was slowly rising into the air though, and Shazam was still stunned by how collosol it was for a clone wars era ship.  If he didn't know any better it had been made by the empire in its early years...

(I'll let you take this one...)

Scout's hud lit up suddenly. He let out a groan.
"Those damn A-wings.. how could I have forgotten.  Panda, we're cleanin' up, man."

The two gunboats banked and flew in at their incredibly high speeds in the curved and wobbly path conductive to longevity in a turret field, even when the guidance systems don't seem to be operational. Apparently the base defenders had been too busy with the suddenly disappearing defender to worry about a couple of gunboats in the distance and didn't notice them, especially coming in at lower speeds.

"Switching shields to forward and bottom, still gotta watch those turrets." At the back of his mind Scout just wondered why those ISD's sitting in orbit couldn't just slag this planet and simplify things.

With his fire-linked lasers and ions, Scout opened fire at the middle of a leg of the 'X' formation, alerting the bogies to his presence but lighting one of the craft on fire and sending it out of control and just past another one, breaking the formation and leaving some scorch marks along its hull. Pandaman was no slower on the trigger and claimed one himself, dragging down another in the confusion.
With only a couple A-wings left to wipe out, the whole engagement seemed like cake when, they pulled up and away from their aggressors, almost seeming like a retreat.  Scout soon followed, taking a not quite straight or patterned path, while Pandaman stayed closer to the ground.

The gun emplacements laced out lethal red bolts from everywhere down below it seemed to Scout, as he gained altitude.
"Figures, they led me into a trap, since the turrets couldn't get a good shot at quickly moving targets too close or too low... gotta get down."
He jerked and jinked his craft into a lower position to try to avoid some of the turretfire, some connecting with his shields every now and then, making him grateful for the downward concentration. As he descended, the fire thinned out, since fewer turrets could get an adequate angle of fire.

The A-wings, disappointed that their ploy had not worked as planned, swooped down on the slower gunboats and tried to take advantage of their speed and manuverability, but scout and panda both, cut throttle, wheeled around and opened fire on the craft, softened by the force of friction on the hull of the fighters.

Scout smiled at the fireball, when suddenly he saw a huge mass rising out of the hills, letting out a string of surprised expletives.
"What in the empire is that?"
"Dunno, but it's big... and old." replied Pandaman, the closest pilot.
"Whatever it is... I don't like it."

(Sorry, Shazam. Is it my fault that I can thing of cool new ideas for the story?)

Jack and the stormtroopers rushed toward the escape pod bay. Scattered around the area were the clone trooper bodies he had seen before. In the hanger they found a fully-operational shuttle with everything except the life-support systems working. "Great," Jack said outloud. "We'll never get out of here alive."

"Sir, maybe if you wore my suit you could survive the trip down," a willing officer said.

"No. You've served the Empire longer than me. You deserve to fight longer," Jack said.

Then Jack thought of something - the clone trooper armor! He still had it in his bag. If he could suit up and the life-support worked, they could all get out of here alive.

"Everybody, hold up a second," Jack ordered as he grabbed the armor from his bag. He quickly put it on. All systems worked.

"Sir," a stormtrooper began, "we have five minutes to get in the shuttle, power it up, and escape from here before this transport hits space and blows."

"Okay, men. Get aboard now and power it up."

"Yes, sir."

Suddenly Jack saw his enemy enter the room. "The ship's gonna blow. We can take my shuttle and escape," he said. Obiviously he didn't know about the life-support being offline.

"No," Jack said. "But I will let you on if you tell me who you are."

"My name's - " His sentence was cut short by the deafening sound of the cockpit exploding. "Please let me on!" he cried.

Jack's softer side kicked in. He might be his enemy, but he could also become his friend.

"Okay," Jack said. "Put on a set of operational armor."

"Why?" he asked.

"Because your shuttle has no life-support. Hurry!" Jack said.

The man left the room and came back with armor on. "Let's go!" he yelled.

They all rushed on the shuttle. It was already powered up, so they shot right out of the docking bay while it was still in the atmosphere. The shuttle slowly descended back toward Thyferra as the bulk cruiser and all its contents hit space and blew up.

The shuttle slowly made its approach to the spaceport where Shazam had landed earlier. He was greeted by Chip and the medic team.

"Chip. Man am I glad to see you," Jack said.

"Me too, Jack. Me too," Chip said.

(Man, I don't mean to come down on you, and trust me, I used to do it all the time...  Well, just look at the series of events we just went through...  Oh well.)

Shazam watched the horrendous explosion in the atmosphere, and shyed away from the scene...  However, it appeared some one had escaped because he could see a small white pod depart from the ship just before the monstrous fireball erupted into the sky.  Maybe Jack was on there.  Hopefully Chip was okay as well, he wasn't quite sure what was all going on, but he decided he'd finish it.

Shazam kicked around in the defender and put it back to full speed, passing by the airport once.  "Guys, we have other places to go, so lets get going.  For the most part, their arial defense seems to have been decimated, and thier turrets are seemingly incapable of any actual assistance, so lets leave the rest to the army..."  He heard some 'okays' and 'lets get out of here'.  "I heard a generator come on when that thing flew out of the rocks, apparently they were getting some kind of energy from over there, must of cut out or something.  We split up, shoot down anything that flies and make sure anything that can upset our army buddies is taken out..."

Shazam was at full throttle so he slowed down, and he just started playing a little game of pick and shoot.  Since any and all defenses seemed to be down, Shazam could have sat in one spot and taken out everything.  The gun boats took out the remainder of the turrets and Shazam made sure to watch for aircraft though, and it seemed to be pretty cleaned up after that...

(Man, I'm just ending this one, because we have to go somewhere else;just trying to move it along...)

When Chip had felt the floor rumbling, he had made a mad dash for the exit. And had just managed to dive out in time, as the cruiser had lifted out of the ground. Humph. The "mountain" had really been a depression, with a big dirty cruiser in the middle. Well. Chip had tracked the thing with his gunboat. He couldn't quite figure out how the hell some clone-era cruiser had been able to sit in the ground that long and still remain operational. The dang thing was liable to tear itself apart at any moment. Chip let out a sigh of relief when the shuttle rocketted out of the bay, half a minute before the engines ripped off and went zipping like chickens without their heads. The massive bulk of the cruiser was still generally intact, but now lacked anything to keep it in the air.

Smoke poured from the holes where the engines had been as the big thing began losing it's rate of climb. The shear inertia had kept it moving upward for a few moments, but now it was sinking fast and headed straight for that damned spaceport. Well. Chip didn't really mind the cruiser-bomb that was barreling straight for the rebbies. Heh. Chip could imagine the way the rebs were gonna get ants in their pants when they saw the cruiser coming at them. He chuckled. Damn rebbies. They deserved it.

He followed the shuttle, setting his gunboat down alongside it and radioing for a medical team. "Hey Jack. Listen, we got orders to head back to the Devestator. Something about being all cleaned up here or something. Wanna ride?"

Jack sqeezed in. "Sure. Let's go."

      *      *      *      *      *      *

Chip flopped down on his bunk, so depressed it was making him feel physically weak. They were driving for the Core, but in all honesty it was probably the most unrealistic goal the boys in high command had ever come up with. What depressed Chip was that he so wanted to see Corellia again! Not so much for any friends or family, but for Sarah.

Again he fingered the ring on the chain around his neck. He hadn't expected to be in the VE this long, had planned to serve a simple enlistment term and go home with his feelings of revenge for what had happened to Sarah quelled. They had been going to get married after he got back. But things just never seemed to go Chip's way. In a way it was his own fault, if he'd never joined the VE, she'd probably still be alive. No, it wasn't his fault. It was those damn rebels on that shuttle...

He never should have let her go on that trip with her sisters. It was too close to the front lines, too full of anxious, scared... and lonely... young men. He would have gone with her, should have gone with her, but her sisters had had a hissy fit: insisted that it was a girls only trip. Sort of like a girls' version of a bachelor party. It had been on that trip that their shuttle had been stopped by a rebel patrol.

Chip sighed, and cracked open another SunDrop. He tried to read one of his novels, avoid thinking about Sarah, but his concentration was shot. He hadn't been home since he joined the VE, since before Sarah left. Even his own family didn't know where he was. Not that they would even care. For all practical purposes, his father might as well have disowned Chip. They were all staunch supporters of the New Republic, and Chip was so conservative that some might even consider him a reactionary. He hadn't kept his service in the Empire a secret for his own reputation, but had been afraid of what might happen to Sarah if word had gotten out that she had been engaged to an Imperial pilot.

Chip started tapping a pencil against the soda can. Here he was supposed to be using what little time he had to rest, yet he was wound tighter than a spring.
