Heres a small history lesson:

Back in the day when I joined (Sept. of 2000), there was actually a checkbox on the Join Form that you could check to join the Dark Jedi Order. Obviously that's changed because we didn't want the Elite Division to have a bunch of irresponsible people roaming around who weren't even up to par with the DJO's standards. (Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong).

In the previous years, the requirements to join the Dark Jedi Order have been riding a dynamic wave. First it was 8 months of active duty service before even applying, then 3 (I believe), and now 6. You must also have one recommendation from the following people: 1 individual from the Army High Command, 1 individual from the Navy High Command, and 1 individual from the Dark Jedi Council itself.

The Dark Jedi Order is the Vast Empire's most elite division. We do have our gaming aspects (JO, XWA, and a few others), but we're mainly based and focused on writing. In fact, it doesn't even matter if you get those recommendations from two of the three individuals (except the Dark Jedi Council individual, because he/she knows what is expected from you), if you cannot write. You must have excellent writing in order to join and stay in the Dark Jedi Order. You must also have a history of being respectful to your superiors and peers. The DJO takes in responsible, respectful, and mature individuals.

Due to these requirements and demands, the Dark Jedi Order only has a handful of members. And those who have the talent to actually stay in the Dark Jedi Order are seen and respected by all. Our midnight black and brown robes immediately strike fear and attention to those around us.

Cos summed it up nicely. And the checkbox on the join form was to let them know you wanted to join. It wasn't automatic.
