Skills/Professions Glossary

Within Star Wars Galaxies, players will be able to choose from a large assortment of professions, and skills. Its is planned to have 700 skills and over 40 professions. What is a profession? Professions, in Star Wars Galaxies, are comprised of certain skills which compliment each other.

Players start out with a set number of skill points which they will not be able to distribute until they obtain new skills. They will obtain new skills by actively using the ones currently available to them. There will be restriction to how many skills a player can learn, and how far they can advance in each one depending on how many skills the player is learning.

Architect - This profession combines skills from the architecture and general crafting disciplines. A player in this profession can build structures including player venues, installations, and municipal structures.

Botany - The Botany skills can be used to develop better plants for farming and for the creation of chemical and medicinal materials.

Armorer - This profession combines skills from the armor design and general crafting disciplines. A player in this profession can create armor for players and structures.

Bounty Hunter - This elite profession combines skills from the investigation, slicing and combat disciplines. A player in this advanced profession can hunt down other players with bounties and is an accomplished combatant.

Chef - This profession combines skills from the cooking and general crafting disciplines. A player in this profession can create all kinds of foods. Foods are not necessary but are quite useful for temporarily improving a player's attributes.

Combat Medic - This profession combines skills from the medical and combat disciplines. A player in this profession can both hold their own in a fight as well as heal those who are injured in the field.

Commando - This profession combines skills from both the ranged and melee combat disciplines. A player in this profession is dangerous both at range and up close.

Creature Handler - This profession combines skills from both the combat and creature handling disciplines. A player in this profession can tame and train animals. A tamed animal can be sold to other players who have sufficient skill to control the creature.

Dancer - Players who choose this role will help players by buffing up a their run speed or help them regenerate faster. Player run cantinas will also want to hire these players to help entertain their customers.

Healing - There are several skills and professions related to healing. There is a Doctor profession that draws most of its skills from the medical discipline. These skills allow players to heal damage to the primary attributes as well as wounds and shock wounds. In addition, the entertainer (music and dance) skills can provide benefits that allow players to heal more rapidly. Finally there are many support professions that provide materials for healing such as chemistry, resource harvesting, and crafting (for medical equipment).

Image Design -  The Image Designer profession combines skills from the body customization and tailoring disciplines. A player in this profession can modify the way other players look as well as create clothing.

Linguistics - The linguistics discipline grants a player's character the ability to learn new languages. Each language has a difficulty rating and in some cases species restrictions. As a player progresses up the skill tree, they will gain the ability to learn more complex languages while at the same time increasing the total number of languages that they can speak. Players of this profession will be very useful in helping to translate for players who do not speak a certain language, such as Shyriiwook ( a wookiee dialect ).

Warmaker,  these aren't the correct professions. I don't know where you're getting all of this information, but quite a bit of it is outdated. Check out www.starwarsgalaxies.com for the real deal.

So sorry. But I had better things to do.
Here is the corrected and updated information about skills and professions in the game that Warmaker is not going to play.

Unlike many traditional roleplaying games, there are no "levels" in Star Wars Galaxies. Instead, your character's advancement is much more flexible. Star Wars Galaxies is built around a skill-based system, in which the skills you possess largely define your character's abilities and relative strengths.
Skills, Disciplines and Professions
At the beginning of the game, you will choose a starting profession for your character (Artisan, Brawler, Entertainer, Marksman, Medic, or Scout). A profession is a collection of skills that represent a particular role or activity. Each profession begins with a few basic skills, and then branches upward into more specialized skills. All skills are organized into various disciplines (a tiered group of related skills). You have complete control over which skills you select, what disciplines you advance through and which professions you become.

Acquiring New Skills
Acquiring skills is not simply a matter of "buying" the skills you desire with the skill points you have available. Instead, access to most skills is restricted until you've fulfilled various prerequisites. Before purchasing a skill, you might be required to complete a specific mission or quest, gain experience with another related skill, or achieve a certain status. Training in many professions will also cost credits.

You may decide to make your character a jack-of-all-trades by learning many different professions, though each time you add a new profession, the skill point cost for gaining new skills increases. Instead you may concentrate on just a few areas for specialization, achieving mastery in just one or two professions. The higher-tier skills are generally more expensive to acquire, in both skill points and credits; they also have more rigorous prerequisites. Every character has a maximum learning capacity (pool of skill points) so no character will be able to master every skill at the same time.

Changing Your Skills and Professions
Once you decide to learn a skill, you are not stuck with that skill for the rest of your character's life. You may give up skills you no longer want in order to free up skill points, which can then be spent on new and different skills. For example, if you find that you do not enjoy being a mechanic and would rather try your hand at galactic politics, you may "sell back" your mechanical skills and begin reassigning the freed up skill points to political skills. You will still need to satisfy any prerequisites the new skills require, but no skill points are lost in the reallocation.

Current List of Professions
Star Wars Galaxies will include over 30 unique professions. Note that certain professions are considered "Elite" and will not be available to starting characters.

I think his point was that people sit around all day bitching about the lack of things to do and picking apart those who actually try to find new ways to get this club active.

Basically, if you have nothing better to do than gripe about out of date information in the first place, you definitely have time to correct that error instead of being sitting back, contributing nothing and trying to be smug.

A day or so late and a dollar short, but at least you came along and gave the updated info.  Which is better than most would have done.  So thanks for that at least.

Someone takes a stab at me me, I'm gonna stab back. That's all. And if you had learned anything of my character over the past two years, you would know that I was being sarcastic. And still am, somewhat.
Now, seriously. If I had it within my power to delete the incorrect information and post the correct data, I would do it. But I don't. At least I took the time to point out the error. When I get more time, I will read all of them and post corrections as needed.
But I do have a life, and right now my college life takes precedence over this one. So excuse me for being a day late and a dollar short. I thought that was the new trend around here, though.

Excuse me if I missed something but you by your own admission pointed out the problem and over a series of posts with Warmaker never bothered to correct the problem.  Instead you found the time to repeatedly jump on his back instead of just doing what you offered as a solution in your first reply.

You may think that makes you the target of attack.  You may also think that all this is funny, which over time it probably will be.  But complaining about stuff and trying to fix it are two different things.  You have exhibited both in this thread to both my chagrin and gratitude, respectively.

I think what frustrates me more is that I know you are adult enough to both know better and to have a thicker skin about some of this.

As for jumping on anyone's back about the timing of things, I think everyone has real life adventures going on right now.  Some of us, however, have to take the heat from the rest of you for it instead of saying, "oh well, I'm busy."

Wow, it must really be boring for you not to jump into the fray.  That settles it, if its too banal for Swomz to give his two cents, it must be extra dull.
