I was personally a big fan of how the squadrons in the EE had a consistent, lore-friendly naming scheme; species names worked pretty well, but not the only category that could work.

I'd personally love Hawk-bat squadron, but I'm biased.

Actually, I like that. I like that a lot. You could even split it by 'element':

TIEs: Wildfire, Flare

Interceptors: Hailstorm, Blizzard

Bombers: Thunder, Quake

The pun master in me wants an Interceptor squadron named Thunder and a Bomber squadron named Lightning.

Typhoon Squadron sounds much more menacing than Hurricane or Cyclone Squadron. :P

Don't forget Eclipse Squadron, though I think it was used in the past.

As long as we avoid using elements on the Periodic Table, I think we'll be good

Twister Squadron or Tornado Squadron?  Or is there another word for it?

Also, folks, I'd like to announce that I'll be serving as the initial Squadron Commander for our new squadron.

Given our relatively low numbers at the moment, and the shuttering of the Fleet side, I need some stuff to do in-story too. And it'll help keep things simpler OOC as well.

So I'll be introducing a new character to fly with the squadron, likely a nephew or cousin of Drac's because I'm an ancient old codger and nostalgia must be served.

I'll be putting together the official roster in the next day or so. If you have wingman requests, please let me know.

@Raigen: The story is essentially a refresher for us, since either a good majority of us have either been away for a long time, been in that weird dead zone following the previous reboot attempt, or are new.  Plus, it's something to do while High Command gets a proper story worked out for us. :3

I'll take a gander, having a summary of what's going on will be nice.

Raigen, if you'd like to cast a vote? I'll give it another day or so before I wrap up the voting. I'll announce the initial roster then too.

Also, as a heads-up, we'll be re-instituting weekly reporting. However, my goal is to make it as fast and painless as possible. I'll provide a link to a Google Form each week, and you'll go fill it out. And it's just that simple. Very little typing required, and it should take no more than 2 or 3 minutes.

There's no need to send individual reports to flight leaders or the squadron XO (who will all be announced with the roster). Filling out the google form will be the only reporting necessary.

Now, as to how we're going to handle the squadron XO and Flight Officer positions: This time around, we're going meritocratic. Rather than simply giving those positions to some of our more senior active pilots, I'll be deciding who gets those positions based on individual activity and merit. This is partly an acknowledgment that we're in different stages of our lives right now and rank doesn't necessarily equate to availability. But it's also born out of the desire to find the very best leadership setup possible for our unit instead of making assumptions based on old data.

So, if you want it, all you've gotta do is earn it.

You can do that by 1) actively writing (including the VENA story, any personal stories, and our forthcoming squadron story), 2) being consistently active on the ComNet and in Discord, with bonus points for keeping in touch with our Army brethren, and 3) showing leadership qualities while doing numbers 1 and 2.

What else...? Ah, yes, I do believe I mentioned a squadron story? We're not going to repeat one of the mistakes of last year's effort by being paralyzed by waiting too long. As such I hope to have the first post of our first mission up tonight. So get ready to jump in and sink your teeth into some action! But don't forget to keep being involved in the VENA story as well, and remember that you're more than welcome to write personal and character development stories too.

So keep an eye out in the next 24 hours for Wildfire Squadron: Running Wild!
