Serpent Personal Story: The Brilliant’s New XO
May 14, 2013 3:39:07 AM    View the profile of Serpent
The Trang Robotics Duellist Elite Droid (named ‘Twister’) came at Pherik ‘Serpent’ Zail with a series of thrusts and jabs.  The human parried the blows in swift succession, his vibrorapier a blur of motion in his hands.  The weapon, a gift to him, felt light yet solid in his grip.  The elaborately carved hilt and steel-blue blade, evidence of keen artwork and skilful creation, gave him a sense of pride that spurred him on to be that much better.

Twister was relentless in its attack.  Zail had spent a lot of money on the machine, but there was no better training partner available on the droid market.  Serpent’s topless body glistened with sweat as he fought off the implacable assault, the constant exertion of a solid hour’s training evident from the way his muscles cried out in agony with every motion.

Finally, inevitably, he slipped.  He missed a block by the slimmest of misjudgements, but it was enough.  The droid’s blade found the gap, passing under Serpent’s guard and slapping the blunt vibrorapier against his exposed torso.

Zail grunted in pain at the hit and staggered back, clutching his side.  “Enough!” He called.

“Compliance,” Said Twister, withdrawing into a ready stance.

Serpent stood there for a moment, leaning on his sword and breathing heavily.  He was alone in one of the VSD Brilliant’s training rooms.  One of the advantages of being Captain of his own Star Destroyer was the ability to book out entire recreation rooms for Zail’s exclusive use.

Deciding he had trained enough he said, “Twister, return to my quarters and power down.”  As the droid went off to comply, Serpent cleaned his gorgeous vibrorapier (its keen blade undiminished by the ferocious training of the last hour) and then went to get a shower.  When he emerged, he donned not his regular grey uniform, but his high-collared official dress uniform.  The plethora of awards upon it stroked his ego as he admired himself in the mirror, and he attached the vibrorapier in an ornate sheath to his belt.

Zail glanced at the chrono on the wall and realised that it was almost time.  He headed for the bridge at a brisk pace, and when Serpent stepped onto the command deck of the Brilliant he saw several other of his senior staff tending to their duties, also dressed in their very best uniforms.  He strolled down the command walkway to his Second Officer, who stood before the Star Destroyer’s massive viewport admiring the view of Qualdeen 4 in the distance.

The glorious sphere of the Vast Empire leaning neutral world rotated gently on its axis, and Zail’s eyes flitted across its stunning vista of emerald and sapphire.  Serpent was just in time, the Brilliant must have only just achieved orbit.  “Everything ready, Mr Quinn?” He asked his temporary XO.

The human nodded.  “Yes, sir.  Chef reports that the food is coming along nicely, and servant droids have finished decorating the officer’s mess for the occasion.  We are fit to receive royalty Captain.”

Zail smiled.  “The Ambassador is not a noble, Farish, but I’m sure she’ll appreciate it.”

Quietly competent Farish Quinn had been Serpent’s Second Officer since his days on the Courage, and Zail respected the man’s dedication and competence.  He had stepped up to the role of temporary First Officer admirably in the wake of Vagen Eosel’s death (see Counterpunch: Death), but Serpent still missed Quinn’s predecessor.

Just then one of the personnel in the crew pit spoke up.  “Sir!  A shuttle by the name of Shining Sun is approaching.  They say that they have Consul Denaron aboard and seek permission to land.”

“Right on time,” Said Serpent.  “Permission granted!” He told the young bridge officer, then called his senior staff over.  “People, let’s go meet the Ambassador!”

-----

An honour-guard of Stormtroopers flanked Zail and five of his most senior crewmen as they stood, parade-ground straight and immaculately dressed, on the polished hangar bay deck.  The Lambda-Class Shuttle touched down before them, and no sooner did the roaring engines power down than the boarding ramp descended.

The Ambassador’s own Stormtrooper honour guard emerged first, followed by the diplomat herself.  Consul Sharna Denaron looked just as Serpent remembered, a vision of regal beauty in robes of gold and scarlet.  Her small face, pretty if not gorgeous, was set to a pleasant smile, and today she had let her flowing auburn locks loose to fall playfully about her shoulders.

“Ambassador,” Said Serpent, bowing deeply.

“Captain Zail,” Said purred with her Esselian accent, extending a hand to him.

Pherik took it, and kissed it lightly.  He then rose to meet her face.  “It’s been a while, Sharna,” He said, and with a slight sideways glance saw the surprise on the faces of his senior officers.  He had neglected to mention that he and the Ambassador were already acquainted.

“It has indeed, Pherik,” She returned, and then looked at the Commander's rank insignia on his uniform.  “You are a full officer now, I see.”

“Told you I was good,” He said with a confident wink.

“Evidently,” Denaron agreed, looking around at the cavernous landing bay.  “This is quite a ship.  I’d love to see it.”

“You will,” He promised.  “Right after dinner.  If you’ll walk this way, Ambassador, I shall introduce you to my faithful crew...”

-----

The Officer’s Mess was a cosy, wood-panelled room, clean and warm at the best of times.  Today, however, it had been added to with elegant candles and decorative glass sculptures on the massive table in the centre.  That table, itself a finely carved work of art from Kashyyyk, was covered in food brought in especially for the occasion.  Serpent had used his own money for this, sparing the Navy the expense of his grandiose reception.

As Captain, Zail sat at the head of the table, with Consul Denaron sat at the place of honour to his right.  On his left sat Farish Quinn, and continuing down that side of the table were his senior officers, Ysanne Samasl, Kol Yandeer, Dev Mishima, and Xela Fendar.  Opposite them were the Ambassador’s staff, high level attachés to the Consul who were to join her on this trip.  They were all top level members of the Diplomatic Corps, on Qualdeen 4 in order to secure that planet’s allegiance.  They were now on an official mission to report back to the capital, and it was Zail’s job to transport them all back to Lotaith.

“How are things on Qualdeen?” Serpent asked between courses, sipping at Kuati wine (one of Sharna’s favourite drinks that he had requested especially for her visit).  “When I was there the planet was leaning ever more towards full Vast Empire membership.”

The Consul drank of wine, clearly savouring the taste, and then replied, “Its going very well.  I was actually headed to Lotaith to discuss what I can offer the government of Qualdeen by way of concessions for joining us.  Like any planet they have questions about how much the VE plans to alter their laws and economy.”

“And?” He prompted, curious.  He was a VENI Agent as well as a Captain, and planetary politics held a certain interest for him.

Denaron shrugged.  “There is little to change.  Their political system is fair and relatively free of corruption, and their economy engages in no business that the VE deems illegal.  If they agree to VE membership we will simply install a planetary Governor to keep an eye on things, but generally they’ll be left to it.  We need only work out what portion of their taxes goes to Lotaith and the rest is a done deal.”

“And what about you in all this?” Asked Zail.  “What happens to you when your job is complete?”

“Well,” Said Sharna, dropping her voice as if to impart a secret, “I did make it clear that the leaders of Qualdeen would prefer to work with someone familiar.  Choosing someone new to the planet as the Governor would be a serious mistake.”

“Someone familiar,” Mused Pherik with a smile.  “Like you, maybe?”

“My father was a Governor,” She replied, “And he didn’t get his post by lacking ambition!”

The two burst into laughter at that point, and clinked glasses before drinking deeply of the wine.

-----

Down the table, Dev Mishima, Com Chief, was lost in thought.  Normally he would have been making quips and trying his hardest to wind up anyone with a rank above his, but not today.  Instead he quietly picked at his food, saying little.

“Still taking it hard, huh?” Asked his best friend, Kol Yandeer.

Mishima nodded.  His eyes fell to the recently received award on his dress uniform, earned for his part during the chaotic events surrounding the fall of the Imperial Dominion.  “I’m not in a celebrating mood.  With all that happened, Vagen’s death...”

“Don’t dwell on it,” The other urged.  “Trust me, you aren’t the only one feeling the loss.  We are all suffering.  Give it time, and you will get it over it, my friend.”

Dev nodded, and looked over to the Captain.  Zail was hiding it well, but Mishima could see that the other was feeling bad too.  He knew not how his CO could keep it so well concealed, but he endeavoured to follow the other man’s example.

-----

After the lavish dinner, Serpent gave Sharna a tour of his vessel.  It felt good to show off the Victory Star Destroyer that was his pride and joy.  He had worked hard for his command, and finally being able to share his achievement with a friend who was not themselves a member of the Vast Empire Navy made the whole thing feel more real.

For her part, Denaron seemed quite enthralled by the mighty warship.  He recalled her love of military history, and their shared visits to the ship museums of Qualdeen, so she was quite in her element.  Sharna asked insightful questions and happily chatted with random crewmen about their work.  Zail noticed how effortlessly she moved around and how charismatic she was with his people, and began to wonder if more frequent visits by high-ranking diplomats might be good for morale.

Eventually the tour ran its course, and he escorted her to elaborate guest quarters where her own Stormtroopers stood guard.

“Thank you for a wonderful time,” She said, stopping at the door and turning to face him.

“You are most welcome,” Pherik replied.  “I’m glad to have you.  Thank you for choosing my ship as your official transport back to Lotaith.”

“Thank you for accepting,” She said, knowing how difficult it was to request a ship of the Second Fleet for such a routine mission.  “So, how long until we reach the Rheagent System?”

“Another sixteen hours,” He said.  “It’s not far, but my people are taking a long and safe route, trying to avoid neutral territory as much as possible.”

“I see,” Said Sharna.  “Well, I must get some rest before our arrival.”

“Of course,” Said Zail.  “Sleep well, Ambassador.”

She turned away and walked to the door, which slid open at her approach.  At the last moment she glanced back at him.  “If you aren’t too busy, though, Captain, I was about to have a drink before bed.  Care to join me?”

He smiled broadly at that.  “Of course,” Said Serpent, and followed her in.

By the time they both emerged, they were in orbit of Lotaith.

OOC:
1902 words.  The first part of my new personal story, following on the romance plot from Serpent Personal Story: Relics and Receptions.  Consul Sharna Denaron was introduced in that story, as was Zail’s new love of vibrorapier duelling.  This story will also see the Brilliant get a new First Officer, to replace Vagen Eosel, lost in VEN: Counterpunch: Death.  Indeed, some of the characters in this story (like Dev Mishima) are still recovering from that fiasco.

After Action Report:  Consul Sharna Denaron requests the Brilliant to be her official transport from Qualdeen 4 to Lotaith.  Serpent is delighted to have her on board and gives his romantic interest a tour of his ship.

“I’m ordering you to contact him!” Snarled the Brilliant’s Second Officer, Farish Quinn, looking over the crew pit on the Star Destroyer’s bridge.

“Oh no!” Said lippy Dev Mishima, flat out refusing his superior.  “The Captain has been in the Ambassador’s quarters for a long time, and I am not going to be the one to disturb whatever they are doing.”

“You are the Com Officer!” Declared Quinn in frustration.  He knew that Mishima had been down of late, but today the irksome man had come to the bridge doing his level best to be his usual annoying self.

“And you are the acting XO!” Countered Mishima.  “You want to tell Captain Zail that we have reached orbit, go ahead.  But whoever blows his alone time with the gorgeous Consul is going to be yelled at, and I am already in the CO’s bad books.”

“Trouble, gentlemen?” Asked Helmsman Ysanne Samasl, stepping to Mishima’s side in the crewpit.

“Miss Samasl,” Said Quinn, sounding exasperated, “Please explain to our Communications Chief that I would like him to communicate a message to our Captain.  Evidently he fails to understand why I have come to him with this job.”

Samasl, a hard woman from Bakura, looked over at Dev, who shook his head.  “The Cap will be angry,” Said the Com Officer.

“Oh you males are impossibly stupid,” Snapped Ysanne, and leaned over to the com station, shoving Mishima out of the way.  “Bridge to Captain Zail?” She said, typing in the CO’s comlink channel.

“Zail here,” Came Serpent’s calm voice.

“We have reached orbit, Captain, please come to the bridge.”

“On my way,” Said the other, and with a ‘click’ the line closed.

“Done,” Said Samasl, turning and walking off, leaving the other two staring in bemusement after her.

-----

Pherik ‘Serpent’ Zail reached the bridge a full ten minutes later, and when he emerged onto the command deck he could not help but notice that all eyes were on him.  Most of the male crewmen were looking at him with a new sort of respect, and he even saw Dev Mishima wink.

As he crossed the walkway to Farish Quinn, he said, “Eyes to your posts, people!” In a stern voice, and ended their stares.

“Good morning, sir,” Said the temporary XO.

“It is indeed,” Said Serpent, feeling good.  “We are in high orbit of Lotaith I see.”

“Yes, sir,” Said the Second Officer, who thankfully kept any comments he might have about the Captain’s private life to himself.  “When will Consul Denaron be shuttling down to the planet?”

“Within the hour,” Said Zail, and that news should have saddened him, but he was not ready to say goodbye to Sharna just yet.  “However, the Brilliant will remain in orbit for the next three days.”

“Very well, sir,” Said Quinn.  “Shall I tell the men that shore leave is on the table?”

Serpent nodded.  “Exactly.  Our visits to the capital are too few.  Arrange time for everyone to get down and see the wonders of the VE’s premier world.”

“Very good, sir,” Said the XO.

“Excellent,” Said Serpent.  “Now, if you will excuse me, I will accompany the Ambassador down to high command,” And so saying he turned and marched off.

-----

The shuttle Shining Sun was comfortable, and Serpent and Denaron relaxed as they travelled down to Lotaith.  As their ship angled towards the planet’s main city, they took in the sights of the orbiting defence fleets and platforms, marvelling at the impressive ships of the Vast Empire Navy.

“Beautiful,” Zail breathed as they passed close to an Imperial-Class Star Destroyer.

“Puts your ship to shame,” Said Sharna with a smile.

“My ship is plenty big enough,” He retorted, sounding mock offended.  “And besides, someday I’ll have my own ISD.  Just you watch!”

“Always trying to climb the ranks,” Denaron observed.  “And are your subordinates the same?  I heard that Navy advancement and competition can get a little cut-throat, but they all seemed nice enough at dinner.”

Pherik shrugged.  “Vagen keeps them in line...” He said without thinking, and then suddenly trailed off.  He had mentioned his fallen XO by accident, still unused to thinking him as gone.  The sense of loss hit him suddenly, and Sharna was quick to notice that something had changed.

“Who is Vagen?” She asked carefully.

“My First Officer,” Said Pherik sadly, wanting to leave it at that until he saw her face silently urging him to share his pain.  “Vagen... died,” He said at last.  “Murdered on my own ship by an enemy infiltrator.”

Denaron laid a hand on his.  “I’m so sorry,” Was all she could think to say.

“Thank you,” Said Zail.  “It’s a recent wound and hasn’t healed yet.  I am slowly working through it personally, but professionally I don’t have time.  Somehow I need to find a new First Officer quickly.  I could promote Quinn, but High Command may have other ideas.  The Brilliant is an important ship in the Second Fleet, and the role of its XO may be coveted by some of the up-and-comers of the Navy.  It won’t be an easy choice.”

Sharna listened intently.  “Would... would you be averse to my input on the matter?” She asked carefully.

“Not at all,” He said.  “What do you have in mind?”

“I have no experience outside the Diplomatic Corps,” The Consul said, “And no right to interfere in how your ship works.  But a naval friend of mine, a Warrant Officer, has been looking for advancement.  If you wanted to talk to her...”

Serpent shrugged.  “Sure, it couldn’t hurt.  I’m not promising anything though!” He added quickly, still not having ruled out Farish Quinn.

“Oh course,” Said Sharna.  “I’ll make that clear to her.  Actually, she’s on Lotaith.  I was going to meet her this evening if you’d care to join us?”

“Sure,” Zail agreed, and by the time the shuttle landed on the Vast Empire’s capital world, the arrangements had been made.

-----

They spent most of the afternoon in the busy political centre of Lotaith’s capital city.  Massive palaces and offices were all connected in a constant hive of activity from which the Vast Empire was administered.  As Denaron went off to the Diplomatic Corps to spend the next three hours meeting her fellows, Zail spent time hobnobbing in one of the many officer’s bars located in the city.  Lotaith had a plethora of both Navy and Army officials in attendance, and any one of them were willing to buy a drink for the Executive Officer of the famed Second Fleet.

When at last he and Sharna met up again, he found her seated comfortably in a hover-limo with tinted windows.  He emerged from the bar and entered the open passenger door to sit beside her on the plush seats.

“So where are we headed?” Serpent asked as soon as he was seated.  He barely noticed the fine interior of the chauffeur-driven vehicle, knowing full well how rich and influential the Ambassador was and being somewhat accustomed to her extravagance.

“The outskirts of the city,” Said Denaron lightly.  “A friend of mine, Viscount Saitroni, is hosting a party at his mansion.  You and I have been invited.”

Zail raised a surprised eyebrow.  “Viscount Saitroni?  The ultra-rich Coruscanti exile?  You certainly have some interesting friends.”

Sharna shrugged with her small shoulders.  “He’s an old friend of my father’s.  It helps to have such a revered family.”

“And this Naval friend you wanted me to meet, she will be at this party too?” He asked, unsure about his ability to socialise with billionaires and feeling much happier with the prospect of a fellow member of the military to talk to.

“Indeed,” Said Denaron.  “Trust me, you’re going to get on great.”

And so saying, they continued on their way.

-----

It was dusk before they reached the edge of the city, and the limo pulled up to a wide squat mansion of three floors.  The blue marble facade of the building was all elegant curves and twists, giving the impression that the building had been lovingly sculpted rather than simply built.  Zail remembered such a design from school, and knew that it was popular back on Coruscant for a while.  This was undoubtedly the home of Viscount Saitroni.

A local security detail checked the limo as it entered the walled driveway approach to the mansion.  Once inside, Denaron’s driver parked the vehicle among a dozen other elegant and expensive speeders.  Serpent’s eyes bulged slightly at the sight.

“Quite the gathering of the VE’s A-list,” He observed, emerging from the limo and taking Sharna’s hand to help her out.  “Reminds me of the diplomatic party on Qualdeen when I met you.”

The Consul smiled at the memory.  “I remember,” She said, “You had no idea what to do then, either.”

“Hey!  I can handle high society!” Pherik said as they walked towards the entrance.  “I am a child of Alderaan after all.  My people practically invented culture!”

“Don’t say that too loud,” Sharna warned him.  “The Viscount is from Coruscant, and his wife is of the Kuati upper class.  They kind of think that they have the monopoly on sophistication.”

“And you are from Esseles,” Zail observed.  “Let none accuse the Vast Empire of being run by Core world elites.”

“Yeah,” She agreed with a lopsided grin, “We’re totally different from the old Empire.”

And with a shared chuckle on their lips, they passed some guards and proceeded inside the impressive mansion.

OOC:
1583 words.  Two more posts to go, in which I unveil my intriguing new XO!  Also, continuing on from the last post, the crew are still dealing with the loss of Vagen Eosel.

After Action Report:  The Brilliant has reached the planet Lotaith, and delivered the VE Ambassador, Consul Sharna Denaron.  Serpent and Denaron are involved, and he joins her planet side.  Denaron has business on the VE’s capital world, and invites her officer boyfriend to meet some influential friends of hers.

The ‘party’, hosted at the mansion of super-wealthy Viscount Saitroni, was a small affair.  When Consul Sharna Denaron led Zail into the main sitting room, he saw barely twenty people sitting about on richly upholstered chairs and sofas, sipping wine and eating delicate food off silver plates held by serving droids.  Most of those present were male, some were female, but Serpent quickly noted that all were human, and that only made him think more of the old Empire.

“Welcome, Sharna!” Said an old man with silver-white hair and goatee of matching colour.  As he rose from his chair to hug Denaron, Zail took note of the man’s fine dark crimson suit and regal bearing, and knew this at once to be Saitroni.

“Uncle!” She replied, hugging the old man warmly.  The rest of those in the room turned to take note of the new arrivals, but mostly stuck to their own private conversations.

Sharna broke the hug and smiled at the old man.  “Uncle, I want you to meet my paramour, Lieutenant Commander Pherik Zail of the VSD Brilliant,” And so saying she gestured towards Serpent.

“Pleasure to meet you, sir,” Said Zail, shaking the Viscount’s hand.

“A pleasure to meet you Commander,” Said Saitroni.  “Please, sit, drink, eat!”

Serpent and Sharna did as bidden, and once settled Zail asked his girlfriend, “Uncle?”

“Just a nickname,” Denaron told him.  “My father and he were like brothers.”

“I do miss your father,” Said the Viscount sincerely, “He would be proud of how you and your brothers turned out, Sharna.  So glad you could attend this little gathering,” He said, gesturing to the rest of those present, a few of whom raised their glasses in acknowledgement.

“Glad to be here,” She said. “Shame Lucadis and Mekel could not make it,” Mused Sharna, naming the brothers that Zail was yet to meet.  “Speaking of people I used to cause havoc with as a kid, is Eylana here?”

“She is indeed,” Said Saitroni with a big smile.  “I’m sure she’ll be down any minute.  I’m sure she’d like to meet you, Commander!” He added, looking at Pherik.  “She read your book and loved it.”

“Always happy to meet a fan,” Remarked Serpent, curious to meet this woman.

They settled into some pleasant chat, mostly involving Sharna and the Viscount catching up.  Zail lurked at the periphery of the conversation, mostly observing his girlfriend and those around him.  They were a curious group, and he recognised nobles, business magnates, and even one or two military, but chose not to bother them.  Eventually a new figure entered, and Serpent’s interest rose instantly.

The woman was clad in a naval dress uniform, which she wore like a second skin.  She marched, rather than walked, into the room, her every movement measured and precise.  It was more like she was entering a parade-ground than a party.  Zail took note of the handful of awards on her chest, and while they paled next to his own impressive collection, they were a fine crop for a Warrant Officer in her late twenties.

The woman, who had short hair of rich and deep red, turned to regard Serpent and those he sat with.  Her face, harsh and sharp-edged, broke into a warm smile that seemed (though natural) oddly out of place on her features.  “Sharna!” She beamed, and crossed to give the rising Consul a hug.

Denaron returned it eagerly.  “Eylana!  How have you been?”  She asked her friend as they parted.

“Fine, fine,” Said the woman, and only then seemed to notice the Commander standing at the Ambassador’s side.  “Sir!  Warrant Officer 1st Class Eylana Saitroni!”

Zail did not miss the surname.  She was the Viscount’s daughter!  He was suddenly wary.  The child of a powerful noble on his bridge was not something Serpent was very enthusiastic about.  Carefully, he said, “Lieutenant Commander Pherik Zail.  At ease, Miss Saitroni, we are not on duty here.”

“As you wish, sir,” She said, and at this point he got a good look at her eyes.  They were a dazzling shade of brown, and when viewed with her lush red hair they took on an almost orange appearance.  “It’s a pleasure to meet the Captain of the Brilliant.”

“Thank you,” He accepted her comment graciously.  “But please, don’t mind me, you wanted to talk to your friend?” Zail said, gesturing to Sharna.

“I’m good here with your father,” Said Denaron to the Warrant Officer.  “Why don’t you two naval types chat while I sit and flatter the old man for a while?”

“Yes!” Agreed Viscount Saitroni, “You two hurry off and let the young lady rave about how great I am!”

“Very well,” Agreed Serpent.  “Miss Saitroni, let’s go grab something to eat.”  And so saying they headed over to one of the droids bearing a tray of Manaan Crabs Legs.

-----

The crab was delicious, and Zail instantly got hooked on a fine dip flavoured with spices from Thyferra.  As they ate, Serpent enquired about her past.  “So, Sharna did not tell me much about you.  Tell me about your career, your life.”

“Simple enough, sir,” Said Saitroni, who kept to military protocol despite Pherik asking her to do otherwise.  “I was an Imperial from birth, part of that generation who knew no other government.  My father, the rich Coruscanti sitting over there, married my mother, a Kuati noble of a minor house.  I was but the youngest of their children, and grew up with as fine as education as their combined wealth could afford.”

Zail nodded to show he was listening, though he frowned slightly at the somewhat dispassionate tone of her voice.  All business, the natural harshness of her features came back with vengeance, and the Warrant Officer spoke with a cold detachment, as if it were someone else’s life and not her own.

“I bounced between schools on Coruscant and Kuat, learning to be at home on both worlds.  I acquired a love of starship design and construction, as do many Kuati, but also enjoyed physical exercise and sports.”

“You don’t duel, do you?” He quipped, expecting a negative answer, but was surprised when she took the question seriously.

“Of course,” Said Saitroni.  “Many nobles did, and my closest friends, such as Sharna, were also fond of the blade, so it was something I took to readily.”

“Interesting,” Said Serpent.  “Go on.”

“Like any intelligent woman without fear of getting dirty, I contemplated a career in the Imperial Navy,” Continued the Warrant Officer.  “Alas, a friend of the family warned me off.”

Zail took a guess. “Sharna’s father?”

The other nodded.  “Indeed, sir,” She said, impressed by his quick and accurate reasoning.  “Governor Denaron deterred me, speaking of the Empire’s anti-female prejudices.  I was disappointed, of course, though privately I think my mother was grateful.”

“That changed with Endor, I take it?” Asked Serpent.  This was not an unfamiliar story from female officers of the Vast Empire’s armed forces.

Saitroni nodded.  “Once my family sought refuge here, I was granted more opportunities than I ever imagined.  The VEN was eager for young go-getters like myself, and I graduated among the top of my class in training.”

Pherik smiled, noticing the Star of the Academy award on her uniform, identical to his own.  “So you got off to a promising start.  Where did you serve after graduating?”

“I was a TIE pilot, originally,” She said with note of pride.  “Fighting border skirmishes with the Republic, I have 17 confirmed kills to my name.”

“Impressive,” Remarked Zail, and he meant it.  He was starting to see the potential here.  “And you have already made the transfer from cockpit to bridge, I take it?”

“Yes, sir,” Said the Warrant Officer.  “I am currently the Second Officer on the Dreadnaught Granite Hammer, an old but proud ship.”

“Ah, so you have command experience?” Serpent asked, growing even more intrigued.

“I do.  Mostly just night shifts, but I have served as XO during several battles,” Said Saitroni.  “I have enough experience to have developed a leadership style I am comfortable with.”

“And if you had to sum up your approach to commanding a crew, how would you?” Asked Pherik.

“Harsh,” She said bluntly.  “On a starship, organisation and efficiency are not only the key to winning, but to basic survival.  The crew must obey quickly and competently, without hesitation.  The only way to ensure such compliance is to be firm.  Do not break the crew, of course, but push them, make them sweat and keep them constantly alert and on their toes?  Yes, that is how I treat them.”

Serpent found himself smiling.  “I could not have said it better myself,” He said, agreeing with her most enthusiastically.  “Please, Miss Saitroni, go on...”

RE: Serpent Personal Story: The Brilliant’s New XO

From the crew pit of the Brilliant, Dev Mishima looked up to see the new arrival to the bridge.  Indeed, everyone else on the command deck had turned to get a glance at their new First Officer.  Captain Zail had announced her appointment just that morning, and though he had spent a day interviewing potential officers, his choice was the woman he had met first, Warrant Officer 1st Class Eylana Saitroni.

“That her?” Asked a crewman at Mishima’s side, following the stern-faced redhead as she strode boldly across the command walkway above them.

The Com Chief nodded.  “That’s her.  A friend of mine on her old ship, the Granite Hammer, says that they used to call her the ‘Scarlet Scourge’.  Apparently she is so harsh that she puts the late Vagen Eosel to shame.”

“The Blue-eyed Snake for a Captain, and the Scarlet Scourge as his XO,” Mused the other crewman.  “I think we are in trouble.”

Suddenly, the woman in question paused, and glanced down at the two whispering bridge officers.  “Yes,” She told them sternly, her eyes blazing with intensity, “You are!”

Mishima and his friend paled, and then quickly got back to their duties.

Meanwhile Saitroni continued on to the front of the bridge, where Captain Zail awaited her while trying to suppress a grin.  “That’s my infamous Com Officer, Mr Mishima,” Serpent told her.  “Best keep your eye on him.”

“Noted, sir,” She replied crisply.

“Welcome to the Brilliant, Miss Saitroni,” Said the Captain, gesturing to the view out of the massive forward viewport.  The long angular prow of the Victory-Class Star Destroyer was clear to see, a view of their ship that made Zail’s heart swell with pride.  “All this is yours,” He told her, “When I am absent, of course.”

“Yes, sir,” She said, but it was an automatic response.  Her voice sounded suddenly subdued, as if in awe of the sight and the thought of being second in command of such a mighty warship.

Ah, thought Zail immediately, So there is a sense of pride and wonder under that professional exterior after all.  Good.

He stepped in a bit closer to her, and dropped his voice to a whisper.  “Eylana,” He said, “I can’t thank you enough for transferring here.  The truth is that the Brilliant has been... different since the war with the Imperial Dominion.  We lost a lot of good people, including your predecessor, and we haven’t recovered.”

“I will help get this ship back to normal ASAP, sir,” Saitroni assured him.

“No,” Said Serpent firmly, “That’s not what I want.  What is past is past, and now gone.  I do not want this crew to feel like we are chasing the shadows of yesterday.  I want change, I want new ideas, new direction.  I want a renewal of this ship and this crew.  Am I clear?”

She nodded, focus and understanding lighting up her strangely orange-brown eyes.  “I will bring everything to the table, sir.  I will give it my all, I promise you,” Said Saitroni sincerely.

“Excellent,” Said Zail.  “Now, let’s take a tour.”

-----

What with Admiral Krazanr’s (somewhat disastrous) visit before the Battle of Sollamens, plus the arrival of Ambassador Denaron, and now with his new XO, it seemed to Pherik that he was offering a lot of tours of his ship lately.  Still, it kept the crew on their toes, and he enjoyed showing off the Brilliant.

However, there was a noticeable difference between introducing First Officer Saitroni to her crew and when he introduced Consul Denaron.  Where the latter was happy and jovial, really lifting the crew’s spirits, his new XO was anything but.  Saitroni met every bridge officer, technician and deck hand with cold distance, and made sharp enquiries as to their current activities.  She never once said anything that was actually negative, but she clearly made it known that she would be watching and evaluating them all in due course.

Though he would never admit it, Serpent found a bit of amusement in watching his new First Officer making the crew squirm.  This was just the sort of person he needed to keep them on their toes.

Eventually they reached the end of their trip through the decks, and Zail turned to his new XO.  “So, Miss Saitroni, what do you think?”

“Impressive ship, impressive crew, sir,” Said the Warrant Officer in a brief analysis.  “I look forward to getting to know both better.”

Serpent listened to her words, but again saw the gleam of cunning in her eyes.  Clearly Saitroni already had some ideas about changes she wanted to make, but was playing it close to her chest for now.  So be it.  “Very well then, if there is nothing else then I’ll show you to your new quarters.  Get a good night’s sleep and I shall see you on the bridge first thing tomorrow.”

“Actually, sir,” She said quickly, “There is one more thing.  I am accustomed to getting a workout as soon as I come off duty, and really can’t sleep without one.  Would you be averse to showing me to the training rooms?”

“Not at all,” Said Zail, “Right this way.”

-----

The training room that Serpent led her to was a large hall on one of the crew decks.  Complete with weight machines and running machines, the place was a fully functioning gym and about a dozen crewmen in shorts and T-shirts were working up a sweat.  A few gave nervous glances to the door when they saw the Captain enter, but Zail waved away any salutes or other attention, letting them get on with their workouts.

Several items of equipment were vacant, so Saitroni had her pick of what to use.  Pherik pointed out a few of the machines that he himself often used, and was all set to leave her to it when something else caught her eye.  “Sir?  Is that what I think it is?”

He followed her line of sight, which was fixed on a set of blue mats in one corner of the training room.  Beside the mats were a set of weapons racks, adorned with blunted vibrorapiers and sets of light, padded armour.  “Ah yes,” Said Serpent, “The duelling area.  You are fond of fencing, I recall.”

“I am indeed, sir,” Said the XO.  “I just need an opponent...” Mused Saitroni, glancing around the room for likely candidates.

Zail smiled and walked over to the mats, lifting one of the weapons and taking a few practice swings.  “I believe I have some free time,” He announced.

“You, sir?  You are skilled with the vibrorapier?”  The Warrant Officer seemed surprised.

“Oh yes,” Said Pherik, removing his top and donning some padded armour.  “Who do you think taught me?”

“Ah, Sarna,” Realised the First Officer, thinking of their mutual friend.  “Well then, sir, let’s see how well she taught you...”

-----

“The Cap is fighting the XO!” The words spread like wildfire through the training room and then the mess hall down the corridor.  Soon almost two hundred of the Brilliant’s crewmen were crowding the edge of the blue mats, watching their two highest ranking superiors cut and slash at each other ferociously.

As Zail and Saitroni lunged back and forth, in constant motion across the mats, the crew yelled their encouragement.  Serpent noticed that a large number of people were shouting out their favour for his opponent.  Have the crew taken a liking to her already?  He wondered.  Or am I just not that popular among the crew?

He had no time to dwell on it, or the fact that Dev Mishima had somehow already arrived on the scene and was taking bets.  His new First Officer was as skilled as she was aggressive, and it was taking all his effort just to keep up a solid defensive.  Zail turned aside the blows as best as he could.  They came in fast, sacrificing power for speed in order to land a telling blow that would count as a win in the mock battle.

He parried a blow and countered, striking as quick as he could.  The audience roared in approval, but Saitroni turned the attack at the last moment and then ducked low.  She tried to come in under his defence but Serpent stepped back out of range and they were back to equal footing.  The dance continued.

Zail would be the first to concede that he was far from an accomplished duellist, but since taking up the vibrorapier he had put in plenty of training.  If nothing else, he had stamina, and that was coming in handy now.  The fight had lasted an agonizing three minutes, and though he was tired, Saitroni was looking equally exhausted.  He just had to hold on and hope that she broke first.

That break came sooner than he expected.  The Warrant Officer came in with a sudden attack, but her sword arm was a bit low, a sign of fatigue.  Seeing his chance, Zail seized the initiative and stepped inside her guard, trying to strike at her shoulder.  Again the crew cheered in delight, but the Captain’s supporters’ elation was short lived.  Saitroni had suckered him in expertly and went for the kill.

As Serpent came in, the XO side-stepped and dropped low.  Her left leg shot out, catching him in the back of the knee, and as the Captain toppled she jabbed out with her blade, bringing it to rest upon his neck as he hit the floor.

The audience went silent as Zail glared up at her.  “That was a cheap trick,” He said.

“But I won,” Saitroni said firmly.  “In real life you would be dead, and that’s all that counts, right?”

He smiled.  Yes, this was just the sort of no-nonsense First Officer he wanted.  “Very true.  Well done indeed!”  And with that announcement the audience cheered.

-----

Later that evening, Eylana Saitroni had settled in to her new quarters.  She took time to unpack some of her belongings (sent across from the Granite Hammer that day), and then tried to relax a little.  Captain Zail had pushed her harder than she had let on, and she looked forward to many more fights with her new CO in the future.

Eylana decided to wash before bed, and stepped into the shower.  She stretched and let the hot water cascade across her body and sooth her aching joints.  When she was done, Saitroni stepped out, beads of water running down her nude body, and across the tattoo on her abdomen.  The symbol, black marks surrounding her navel, clearly showed her devotion to her God.

Going to her crate of possessions, she reached inside and lovingly lifted out a large box almost a foot in height.  Eylana placed the finely carved oaken box on her table and then opened it.  Inside was a figure made of rich onyx, shaped into the likeness of her fearsome deity, Psusan.

Saitroni bowed and said her nightly prayers to the destroyer.  One day, she knew, Psusan would return, and all the unbelievers would perish.  Only her and her fellow Zealots of Psusan would be spared in the apocalypse to come.  Vast Empire, Imperial Remnant, Republic, all the petty regimes would be swept aside by the tide.  It would give her no joy to see her friends and fellows annihilated, but she had made her peace with that a long time ago.

Until then she would serve the VE and the Brilliant as best she could.  Her religion entailed devotion, but also perfection.  She could do no less.

THE END

OOC:
1931 words.  And there it is!  The Brilliant has its new First Officer, a harsh yet skilled woman with a strange nihilistic religion!

After Action Report:  Warrant Officer Eyalan Saitroni arrives on the Brilliant and becomes its new First Officer.  Zail shows her the ship and they have a vibrorapier duel (which the young Kuati woman wins).  Later, in her quarters, she offers up prayers to her deity, Psusan.
