Gurlanin: To be the best ...

Gurlanin was pushing himself harder than ever before. He was perfecting his aim on the range, trying to get a feel for his new rifle: learn its quirks.

So far he was doing ok. He was always hitting the target, but not always where he wanted to. 'ok' wasn't good enough. Not by a long shot. Not for a member of Strill Sqn. It was bad enough he had taken so long to get through training. It wasn't his fault that he was naturally talented at beating the instructors at their own games!

Gurlanin tried again. Deep breath, gently squeeze the trigger .... "Ooof!" he grunted, as the recoil knocked him back. Maybe he'd relaxed a bit too much? He tensed again. Time seemed to slow, as he looked down the barrel, through the iron sights. Something pulled inside of him: a whisper in his ear. Gurlanin fired, and looked around for the source of the voice. There was no-one there. He was alone.

When he looked back at the target, he gasped, and rubbed his eyes in disbelief. He'd hit the target dead centre! A fluke ... probably. Maybe.

He couldn't take that chance.

Gurlanin picked up his rifle, and listened for the voice again. Yes, there it was. Faint, but there. He tried to make out what it was saying .... BANG! BANG! BANG! He sent off a triple shot without thinking. Without really looking, either. Again, they were all dead centre.

A range officer walked over to see how the Leading Crewman was doing.

"Finding the target alright? S'ok if you're not. Most newbies don't ..." The R/O stopped mid-sentence as he saw what the pilot had hit. "No way. You're a natural, kid!"
"I ... I don't ...."
"Nonsense! Go on, do it again."
"I really don't know if I can, sir."
"It wasn't a question, LC."
"Yes sir."

Gurlanin hefted the rifle back into the firing position, trying to listen for the voice again. It wasn't there. Oh well, he thought to himself, Guess I'll just try to hit something. And he did, just off centre.

He spent the rest of the day on that range with the R/O giving him pointers, correcting his aim slightly every now and then. By the end, he was shooting like a pro, a few shots off every now and then, but his aim had improved dramatically. By the time he headed back to his bunk, the quiet voice had been all but forgotten.
Whether it be in space, or in the skies, I fight for the lives of my wingmen, and the security of the Empire. When they are safe, then I can save myself.
