  Echelon: Ancillary Skill Navigation

Petty Officer First Class Echelon stood at the back of the bridge observing the limited activity as it commenced. In front of him was Admiral Stormz, a towering Wookie who also stood surveying his crew. Intimidating at the least, he often would frighten a crewmate simply by speaking. However, Echelon looked upon the Commander of the Navy with a sense of admiration.

This man rose from a crewman to the Naval Commander. It just shows that hard work can pay off.

Echelon had been called up to the bridge to relieve a navigator. The shift was almost over, and Echelon would relieve him then.

A small buzzer sounded, and some of the bridge officers left. Others would stay for awhile longer. Double shift. Echelon proceeded toward the front of the bridge where the helms crew sat. He greeted the pilot and took a seat.

“Alright,” he said, “let’s take a look at where we are.” He flipped a switch and brought up the system map. Rolling several dials, he rotated the map and figured out his surroundings.

The ship was in a sparse asteroid field, and he confirmed the fact with a brief look out the view port. Particularly large asteroids were noted on the display. The Atrus was big, but so were asteroids. A collision with one could cause serious damage. Something Echelon would have to deal with as the Damage Control Officer of the ship.

Suddenly a series of roars, grunts, and moans were spoken out of the mouth of the Admiral. Echelon didn’t know Shri’wook, and neither did the pilot. Luckily, he had a translator.

“The Admiral requests that the helms crew pilot the ship beyond the asteroid field and commence a hyperspace jump to Tadath,” the translator stated.

“Alright, pilot, you ready?” Echelon asked, looking over to the man.

“Yes sir.”

Echelon took a look at his map. He searched Tadath on the system’s hyperspace catalogue. The computer quickly recognized the planet and noted a hyperspace route beyond the asteroid field.

Alright, I know where to get to now.

“Pilot, move forward at 600G.” The pilot reacted quickly and the ship sped forward. Echelon checked the display. There were only smaller asteroids for a few more clicks, but there was a big one coming up.

“Okay. There is an obstacle coming up. Pitch the ship at 50 degrees, and lower the speed to 500G.” The pilot, once again followed Echelon’s instructions, and the large asteroid was out of their path. He checked the map. They were almost out of the asteroid field, but the sensors were detecting a small nebulae up ahead. The gravity from it might hinder the jump into hyperspace.

“We’ve cleared that large asteroid. Pull her back up to 0 degrees and increase the speed to 700G, but in a few clicks, slow ‘er down. We’ve got a nebulae coming up.” The ship’s angle went back to normal, and moved forward a bit faster. When the pilot began slowing the ship down, he checked his display.

The nebulae was blocking there path. They would have to go around it before they could make the jump.

“Turn the ship 10 degrees starboard and maintain our current velocity.” The ship slowly began to turn, and soon it was rounding the nebulae.

“Alright, keep going for a few more clicks, so we can get away from that gravity field.”

Echelon went back to his console and input the hyperspace coordinates for Tadath.

“We’re clear of the nebulae,” the pilot stated.

“Alright. The hyperspace navigation system is in control now.” The hyperspace navigation system made small, minute adjustments to the ship, and in moments time a confirmation request appeared on his screen. Inputting the confirmation code, he pressed the ignition button. For a brief second, the bridge was silent, but then the stars out the viewport began to streak and the ship jumped into hyperspace.

Echelon leaned back in his chair, satisfied with his job. He looked over at the Admiral, and Echelon swore he winked at him.

Winking Wookies. Man, I’ve got to lay off Blaster puffs...

Word Count: 689. Ancillary skill navigation. I actually think the writing in the beginning of this is pretty good.

For how sparse the VENA wiki page is right now describing the mission for this Ancillary, this is fine, Echelon.  A couple things to keep in mind moving forward, though: it's Astrogation, not Navigation (I know, Han calls it a Navi-Computer, but he's a civilian; the official VE Navy term for "navigating" through space is Astrogation); and a singular cloud of dust and gas is spelled nebula, while the plural form is spelled nebulae.    Passed.
