So I saw that on Friday. It pissed me off.
... because Star Trek won't be winning any visual oscars.
The film was absolutely flawless in it's cinematography and cinegraphics. The range of motion on the faces of the Na'Bi was incredible. This film blowed me away, floored me, roofed me, etc etc. It gives me hope for cinema in an era of commercialism and cheap storylines to make a quick buck.
And don't even get me started on the political messages laced overtly and covertly throughout the movie. Good god, this was a brilliant work of art. ...Ehhh, looked great. Story was a fairly predictable romp. I got worried when it started drawing clearer parallels with real life events, even cringed on a few lines, but at least it had the tact to mention them, then move on unlike a lot of message heavy movies.
If you can sit through the first 2/3rds of the movie, the last act makes it totally worth it, if just for the visuals. But face it, its this or paranormal jump scares or The day after tommor-I mean, Deep impa- no wait, 2012.
District 9 was better in every aspect, in its message, its visuals and its story.
In the end it just goes to show, you make Titanic and Terminator 2 and they will let you do anything you want. [This message has been edited by Jager (edited December 19, 2009 8:12:14 AM)] |

So yeah, sorry for the double post but... Jager wrote:If you can sit through the first 2/3rds of the movie, the last act makes it totally worth it, if just for the visuals.
I agree with Decembrist, and not Jag, on this one: the movie was flawless. And not just because it had one of the greatest fighting scenes at the end of the movie, in fact, i consider the FIRST 2/3rds of the movie to be on the same parallel as the ending. Now I'm not overreacting or some shit, and I'm not a big fan of anything James Cameron has done before. I walked into the theater thinking it would be crap and walked away loving it. If you are a science fiction person (which you fail for being in this club if you aren't) this film is a must see. Let me repeat that in bold, red, capped, giant underlined font: MUST SEEI have nothing left to say, other than the fact that this film is amazing and makes Star Wars look like shit. Go ahead and challenge me on that one, you know it's true. Its dances with wolves/The last samurai/A dozen other movies about the evils of imperialism, but with Aliens and crammed with gratuitous amounts of wonderment and wimsey (The forest glows inexplicably, poorly explained flying mountains) to try and distract you from that fact.
I'm baffled by the fact that it has been in the works for ten years... you'd think he could have come up with a better story in all that time.
Now sure, it looked good, but that doesn't make up for the rather bland story that drags it arse around until the final act, and the final act got bogged down in parts as well. The acting from most of the supporting cast was hammy except for the marine commander, the one saving grace of the film. Oh sure, he chewed scenery like no other, but it was a good kind of chew. Worthington's role probably wont (Shouldn't) win him any awards. They had stereotypes in droves as well, for example, every god-damned marine in the film was a mouthful of tobacco away from a beer hat. Because not having a painfully clear distinction between the good guys and the bad guys would confuse people...
Frankly, there are better sci-fi movies out there which you could probably find at your local video store for half the price of the movie ticket. District 9 (Is that out on DvD yet?), Blade runner (A must see), Alien (Cameron at his finest), hell the original star wars trilogy. All far better films both in setting and storyline.
But face it. You'll see this film. Most people will. It'll win awards. But in the end what do we have?
Did it break new ground in the genre? No. Once again, anesthetics don't make up for a contrived storyline.
Was the story memorable and gripping? If you haven't seen Dances with wolves, or the last samurai or the slew of movies like them, then still not really.
We've simply retreaded old ground and given it a flash new coat of paint... [This message has been edited by Jager (edited December 24, 2009 7:17:34 PM)] |

Good graphics and not much else. I spent the film alternately wishing the alien scenes would end and anticipating the inevitable smackdown by the humans. The film made me root for the genocidal caricatures and hope they would win. Not a good sign.

What Rogueboy said.
Look, visually. I won't deny it. It was brilliant. I didn't even see it in 3d.
But seriously. I wanted to vomit at 40 min. And I think I spent 30 min somewhere of the movie in a giggle fit trying to surpress my laughter with my friends.
I mean, it was just waaay too sappy and romantic.
It was like Pearl Harbour and Titanic all in one but with blue-skinned aliens which could have been a bit more original and awesome graphics.
