The Training Run (Drac & ZalaVE)

Drac looked around as he walked through the front doors of the Naval Academy. He knew where he was going already, but it was always good to get a peek at the next generation of pilots coming up. This group looked much the same as the others he'd seen, mostly humans with a scattering of other species throughout. Then again, appearances didn't make the pilot. He'd seen squadrons put together simply because the members meshed well in the holonews pictures...he'd also seen those squadrons get hammered because their skills weren't as good as their looks.

Continuing deeper into the Academy, the Mon Calamari made his way to a private staff room. From there, he planned to continue on to the office of the Naval Training Officer, 2nd Lt. StOrMz, who was his boss whenever Nazgul gave him enough of a break for him to return to the Academy. This, however, proved unnecessary. Lt. StOrMz was in the staff room at the moment. Saluting, Drac reported in, "Operator 3rd Class Mihawk reporting, sir."

The wookie returned the salute and got straight to business, "I have an assignment made up for you today, Petty Officer. One of our students, one ZalaVE, is looking promising. I'd like you to run some simulator combat with him and see how he fares. Suit up and meet him in Simulator Room Three in twenty standard minutes."

-----
-In Simulator Room Three-

Drac returned the salute from the human male who'd been waiting for him, "You are Crewman ZalaVE?"

"Yes, sir. Reporting for duty."

"Good. I am Petty Officer 1st Class Drac. We'll be running some simulator missions today. If you're ready, mount up and we'll begin." The two climbed into the simulator cockpits. Once they were strapped in, Drac activated a special number pad that controlled the simulators. Entering a certain code, he linked the two units and set them for a specific mission. Countdown timers appeared on each screen a moment later. 5...4...3...2...1...Mission Begins.

The two TIE Interceptors began their mission in empty space, patrolling between a large gas giant planet and a plains-covered moon. Drac activated his comm unit, "We're to patrol the area between our base on the moon and the planet. There are reports of pirate activity in the area."

As soon as he finished speaking six blips appeared on their sensor screens. Targeting data and information about the ships surrounded them. Thumbing his weapons control over to concussion missiles, Drac spoke again, "Looks like half a squadron of TIE-Wings. Let's see what you can do with a missile. Pick a target and vape it with a missile, then we'll go at this four on two." Suiting action to words, the Mon Cal banked his craft to starboard and dove toward the gas giant. Within a few seconds he entered missile range and settled his crosshairs over the far left enemy ship. A lock tone quickly sounded and he pulled the trigger.

The TIE-Wing tried to snap roll to dodge the missile, but the ungainly craft just wasn't up to it. The pilot had only managed to rotate it up on one side before the concussion missile slammed into the front viewport of the craft's TIE cockpit. It penetrated, then detonated, sending the Y-wing nacelles spinning off into space as the cockpit was vaporized. Satisfied with the kill, Drac watched to see the results of Zala's missile.

OOC:

Okay, some basic rules as promised. Some of these are pretty much unspoken and aren't taught at the Academy, so learning them here will help you a lot:

-Don't kill more than one enemy ship per post.
-Your post must be 250 words or more according to Naval standards. Most squadrons prefer 500+ words, though, so shoot for that mark.
-No double posting unless 24+ hours have passed since your last post.
-You have a little control of others' characters, but not much. It shouldn't go beyond writing out both sides of a conversation and some basic combat maneuvers. Let other members write out their own kills.
-Include some maneuvers in each ship vs ship fight. That means writing out what moves you make in your ship and your opponent's reaction to them.
-Remember to write in the third person (he, she, it, etc), not in the first person (I, we, etc)
-It's always a good idea to use Wookiepedia to research the ships involved in a fight to learn what their capabilities are. That'll help you know if you're faster or slower than your enemies, if you're more or less maneuverable, what weapons they have, etc.

There's more as we go, but this should get you off on the right foot. We don't expect perfection, especially not the first time. That's what training is for, eh?

Zala now had a missile tone lock on the enemy TIE Wing Fighter he then selected proton torpedoes to vape the enemy with.  He then pulled the trigger the missile then released from the TIE Intercepter's missile bay and flew at the enemy fighter.  The enemy fighter then performed a barrel roll to evade the missile that Zala had fired and then used its laser cannons to shoot it down which put a frown on Zala's face.  Now that the enemy had shot down Zala's missile Zala knew that the enemy had the advantage over him for the time being anyway.  The enemy fighter then began pursueing Zala to try and shoot him down with a missile lock of its own.  Zala then performed a Barrel Roll just like his opponet did before but then he performed a Lag Pursuit manouver to confuse the enemy.  Then the enemy fight er had lost track of Zala then Zala took the opportunity to fire his blaster cannons at the enemy fighter damaging its wing but unfortunatly the damage was not enough to cripple the enemy fighter.  Because the enemy figter was slightly damaged to could not manouver as well as before it would not be able to pursue Zala as good now Zala had the uperhand.  Knowing that he had the better advantage over the enemy fighter Zala then thought that it was time to use an offensive strategy to kill the enemy fighter.  Zala then put  on the throttle breaks of his TIE Intercepter and allowed the enemy to fly right past him this strategy would allow Zala to get a perfect missile lock on the enemy fighter.  Once Zala was in missile range of the enemy fighter a missile lock tone quickly sounded and then he pulled the trigger.  Unfortunatly for the enemy pilot he could not perform any manouvers evade the enevitable missile impact due to the damage to one of his fighters wigs from Zala's blaster cannons.  The missile flew at the enemy fighter at a high speed while the enemy pilot saying oh dear God no while on the other end Zala said I have you now and all of a sudden then missile penetrated the enem fighters titanium alloy metal structure klling the pilot instantly.

With the enemy fighter pilot dead Zala could now focus on the other enemy fighter at hand.  The rest of the enemy squadron had been focusing on Zala more than Drac which ment Zala was in great danger.  Zala was being pursued by four other enemy fighters it was time for him devise a new strategy to defeat the other fighters.  While Zala was being chased by the other enemy fighters so he decided to perform a Barrel Roll to evade all the laser shots that were coming at him from the other enemy fighters.  Zala now had to get into missile range of one of the enemy fighters bit to do that he would have to get behind one of them.  So again he performed another Lag Persuit manouver which once again confused the enemy. Then finally Zala was finally behind an enemy fighter once more he had a missile lock on it the missile lock tone sounded and it was missile away.  The missile fkew at the enemy fighter at high speeds killing the enemy pilot instantly.  Now that Zala had gotten another kill the rest of the enemy squadrons morale had been weekend and they were disoriented.  Zala now only had to focus on the three remaining enemy fighters which was sort of a reliefe to him.

This isn't bad so far, Zala. Let's work on grammar and spacing (more or less just to make it easier).

Good job so far

Sorry for the gap in participation. Still finishing up at my old job while training at my new one, so time's been short today.

To clarify what the Lt. is talking about when he says spacing: Bascially, divide your posts into paragraphs. A good way to practice that is to have your character see or hear something and go on to have him think about it. That should be its own paragraph along with one or two paragraphs about the combat itself. You can use as many paragraphs as you want to in a post.

I promise, I will get on and write out a post here...but right now my brain is fried, lol. Good initiative in making a second post. Go ahead and post again if you want to.

Once the third enemy fighter was down Zala knew that he only had to focus on three more enemy fighters.  So he then Managed to shake off the remaining fenemy fighters and then did a break right turn to try and attempt to flank the enemy.  Zala then managed to get a missile tone lock on the enemy fighter Zala then pulled the trigger.  The missile then flew at a high speed but again it missed one of the three remaining enemy fighters completely.

After the missile had missed one of the three remaining enemy fighters Zala then had a huge fron upon his face. So then devised another way to take down the enemy fighter by to a flanking manouver.  The enemy saw him do this and began shooting at him with their blaster cannons that were equipped to their fighters.  Zala then took advantage of the fact that his TIE Intercepter had greater armorment, speed and manouverability which wpuld allow him to deliver a killing blow to the enemy TIE Wing fighters.

An enemy fighter had then fired a missile at Zala so he deployed his performed a manouver to get into the right position to shoot it down and he did so with his fighters four blaster cannons.  once the enemy missile was shot down Zala could then focus on the task at hand without worrying about beciming ash.  He then managed behind an eney fighter and used his his blaster cannons to damage t slightly.  The enemy fighter then tried to flee but its futile attempts were meaningless.

Once the enemy fighter was damaged Zala armed one of his missiles.  A missile tone quickly sounded and Zala then pulled the trigger on his yoke and it was missile away.  The missile then traveled at a high speed  and penetrated the enemy fighters cockpit as the missile began to detonate the pilot muttured oh no I am dead.  Then the missile detonated killing the pilot instantly and the fighters recage  began floating into space.

As the fourth enemy fighters debris drifeted into space Zala now only had to focus on the last two enemy fighters which were pursuing him like bees coming out of a hornets nest.  Zala was a bit more to have shot down three enemy fighters and only had to worry about the two remaining ones.  The remaining two enemy fighters were chasing Zala through an asteroid field which could be disasterous at any moment.  Then Zala decided to perform a Lag Pursuit manouver again to try and flank the the two remaining enemy fighters.

Zala then performed the manouverbut was sort of unsuccessful because the two remaining enemy fighter pilots were now out for Zala's blood and to avenge the death of their four lost comrads.  Zala had now managed to get behind one of the two remaining enemy fighters and fired his blaster cannons at it but missed.  When the two enemy fighter pilots realised that Zala was trying to pul a flanking manouver and trying to shoot at them they then did a manouver of their own and surprised him.

The last two enemy fighter pilots had put Zala into a dangerous scenario.  Zala had to think of what to do next for instance if he tried to fly right at the two enemy fighters he would probably be immediatly shot down.  So he decided to try and do another Barrel Roll.  Zala then executed the Barrel Roll which actualy worked and it surprised the enemy pilots.  Now that Zala had broken free of the enemy fighter pilots he now could plan a new strategy to try and take down at least one or both of the enemy fighters.

Zala now thought to himself that the here and now would be the perfect time to hit the enemy hard, so he then managed to pull another flanking manouver to confuse the enemy.  Zala thought that if the enemy was confused and  disorianted he would be able to shoot at least one or  both of them .  Zala then managed to get right behind one of the two enemy fighters.  He then armed one of his missiles and set his crosshairs on of the last two enemy fighters pulled the trigger and it was missile away.  The missile then flew at high speeds and flew right into the one of the enemy fighters penetrating its titanium metal structure killing the pilot instantly.  The only thing that Zala had to do now is wait for his CO Drac fire the last shot and the battle would be over if he didn't Zala would have to do it himself.

OOC:
Good stuff, Zala. Just a few things you might work on, but on the whole you've done an excellent job:

-Aim to get a little higher word count. You're already getting close to 500 words per post, which is great. Getting to 500+ on every post (but writing good stuff) can really be helpful as you continue in the club. Making quality posts increases your chances for promotion, etc.

-You may want to slow down a bit when you type. There're still some spelling and grammar errors in there that could be taken out. One thing you can do to work on that is to write in Microsoft Word or another application that has a spellcheck. Then copy/paste the posts into the box to submit them.

-Include references to your wingman and anyone else in your unit. You don't have to mention everyone, but adding them into your posts will allow them to work off of your post more easily. For example, your last several posts leave no room for me to act as a wingman really should. You'll see what I mean below.

-Later, when you're in a squadron, try not to advance the story too far by posting back to back. That can make it hard on your squadron mates by shutting down posting opportunities. A lot of time is spent just being patient here in the VE. People can have a hard time getting on, so it can sometimes be several days before someone else posts in a thread. It can't be helped though.

Drac pulled back on his throttle as he saw Zala going after the ship he'd missed. Kid's gonna get himself shot to ribbons dashing off after one target like that...still, that's not the lesson he needs to learn today. Dropping back, Drac settled in behind and to starboard of Zala's fighter, "Two, I'm your wing. Take it from here and I'll back you up."

Following the rookie through a variety of maneuvers as he engaged the enemy, Drac nodded to himself. He's doing pretty good for a trainee. Still pretty rough around the edges, though. Several times throughout the battle, as Zala targeted one enemy or another, Drac found himself turning to engage and drive off another enemy snubfighter that had managed to get in behind them. He was careful not to kill the simulated TIE-Wings, though, since he wanted Zala to get as much experience as possible.

Seeing yet another missile streak off into the beyond, the Mon Calamari shook his head. Activating his comm, he said, "Crewman, take it easy on the missiles. These birds don't carry very many of them. In a real battle you'll have between four and six missiles to fire depending on the ordinance being used for that mission. Using one or two is okay, but the rest need to be saved for possible use against larger ships."

Eventually only one enemy ship remained. The other TIE-Wing blew apart, spewing shrapnel all over the place...including into its wingman. A shower of sparks flew from the ugly craft's right engine nacelle and Drac was sure that it would have begun smoking had there been any atmosphere to fuel a fire. A telltale flickering of that engine's energy cone coincided with a sharp drop in its speed, about 33% total.

Taking the lead, Drac looped up and around to come in on the enemy ship from above and to port. As crippled as it was, there was no chance the simulated pirate could escape. It tried to run anyway, but only ended up presenting the Mon Cal with the shot he'd wanted in the first place. Coming in from the side, rather than behind, he aimed in front of the fleeing enemy and fired a single burst from all his laser cannons. Flashing out, the bolts came together and drilled the TIE-Wing's ball cockpit. Half melted slag drifted from holes on both sides of the sphere a moment later and its flight became ballistic. The simulated craft and its dead pilot would continue on course forever, drifting through sim-space...or for the next few seconds at least.

Moments later Drac's cockpit went black.

-----
Three minutes later.

Reaching out, Drac offered the Crewman a handshake, "Good work out there, Trainee. Keep practicing your maneuvers; your turns and banks are a little jerky. Beyond that, remember what I said about not using too many missiles. Along those lines, I'd recommend you practice making kills with your lasers. Do a few runs with no missiles at all for the best results."

After signing out of the simulator room, Drac sent the Crewman on to his next class. Going to his own small office, he wrote out a quick report on the simulator flight. Once he'd submitted it the Mon Cal pulled up a lesson on his holopad and began to review his notes for the next class he was to lecture.

OOC:
Thread's over, my friend. You ought to be assigned to a squadron within a day or two. Great job!
