OOC:
Hello everyone. Seeing as in the competition officially begins on the 26th, I think it's time for a warm up exercise.

The task is simple: Tinker or I will write the first post on a generic combat mission. From there, you are to simply keep the story going. You all need to take turns at posting to keep the thing going, there shouldn't be a situation where someone might have to double post.

There is no overarching plot here, no hidden agenda, you simply have to write.

Rules are:

* Each post must move the story on, no more then 25% should be material relating to a previous post.

* Minimum of 700 words please, from everyone. The more you write, the more points you get as a general rule, but try to maintain the quality aspect as well.

* Keep it serious & sensible. The plot is pretty much in your hands with this one. Think of it like that game where everyone says one word of a sentance, so YOU have the power of where the story goes next. Keep it simple, keep it beleivable, and make sure who ever is coming in after you can follow on from it.

* I want one post on the story a day. It doesn't matter from who (although no double posting) but you have to get into the habit of checking regularly, and posting as soon as you see a gap.

* Post a placer when you're about to post, and then edit that when you've written it. If I see anyone posting a placer and then not posting, I will bitch slap them.

Any questions, just send me a PM. Don't worry, I'll be joining in on this too.

The first post will follow this one. Carry on.

Relax, Cadie. Its just a patrol mission.

Right, thought Cadie, when was the last time Viper's had 'just a patrol mission'. Tinker rolled her eyes in the cockpit of the TIE Interceptor. She could still make out the Suspense in her rear view port. There was little chance of there actually being an attack, but still something about everything lately just didn't added up.

This isn't like that, Cadie. Its just a bloody patrol mission.

Fine. Cadie could still hear the conversation from the hanger in her head. It was like Ibram was in the cockpit with her telling her to stop being paranoid at that very moment, instead of in the conversation they had about twenty minutes ago. Her mind almost drifted  to how cute Ibram looked when he cursed, and she would have slapped herself on the forehead if the helmet wasn't covering her head. Shaking her head Tinker brought herself back to the here and now, what should be a very boring patrol mission.

She glanced to her right and could see Roman, on her wing. Arthur's piloting skills had been improving lately, he was a good pilot to have as a wingman. Looking to her left she could see Dagger keeping pace. She seemed to be a natural pilot, and Cadie could tell she felt comfortable in the cockpit.

The others from Viper were spread out, scanning the area for anything other than simple space dust. Cadie really hoped they would find nothing more interesting. She could think of about twenty things she would rather be doing today other than shooting down stupid people who thought they could take on a squadron of TIE interceptors. Although she had to admit, if the tables were turned she wouldn't back down from a fight either.

Her private comm crackled to life. “Tinker, you picking up something at 2-2-7?”

Cadie leaned over and squinted at the radar, tapping the screen a few times after turning the knobs below to get a clearer picture of the area Ibram was talking about. Sure enough there was something there, heading their way pretty fast. The speed ruled out most benign sources. Fantastic, I hate being right all the time.

“Yeah Ibram, I see something. Move to intercept?” Cadie was already getting ready, flipping switches and checking her systems. She had to restrain herself from saying something sarcastic and just smirked under her helmet.

“As long as you promise not to say, 'I told you so'.” She could tell that Ibram was also getting his TIE ready for combat, she could hear him click on the main Viper channel and give the coordinates for the intercept course to the rest of the squadron.

Tinker turned the controls, angling the TIE interceptor towards the coordinates and who knows what kind of mess they were about to get into. Flipping to Ibram's channel one more time, Cadie smirked again. “You are no fun at all, lets get this over with so you can buy me a drink.”

She could hear Ibram laugh as she clicked off the comm and started to focus on the problems flying in their direction that were going to annoy her today.

As they approached, Cadie could make out nine A-9 class Starfighters and what looked like a transport vessel of some kind. The transport was still far off and the sensors were not picking up enough information to make a positive ID. But even from this distance Cadie could tell it was how the A-9s got here, they would have needed a ride since they lack hyperdrives.

Tinker listened as Ibram attempted to get the fighters to respond on the comm. They seemed to be surprised to see a squadron of TIE interceptors heading right for them. The poor saps probably were in an old transport that broke down and they were patrolling themselves. Oh well, they really picked the wrong place to have hyperdrive problems.

They could have been smart and got out of there, but no, they decided to be cocky and try to take on the squadron. They sounded like pirates, which didn't mean they were bad pilots just meant they had a reputation to defend and that meant not backing down from a fight. That also gave them a reason to fight which meant this may not be as easy as one would think.

Opening the comm to her flight Tinker gave them a quick order. “Break. Take them one on one. This really shouldn't take very long guys, then we can deal with that transport.”

OOC:
Okay there you go guys. That's 9 A-9 fighter go get em'. Now have fun. And if I messed up Ibram will beat me and then i'll fix this Remember 700 words, my first draft of this post was about 556, I re-read it and fleshed out some of the paragraphs and now its well over 700.

Thanks for that Tink, remember the instrcutions folks, just keep the story going. If you want to bring in more bad guys for us to fight, feel free, although it has to be stuff we can handle. Conversely, you can also bring in good guys to help us out as well - it's up to you.

Just remember, 700 words, as little amount of filler or copied content as possible, and just have at it. I'll post when the rest of you have posted.

Uris Hogan heard Cadie's message over the comm and paused. Something about the loudness and intensity of the  message reminded him about his days as a mercenary, when he would  lead raids on bases, first jamming the opponent's comm then moving in for the kill. Having been the victim of frequency jamming himself, it made him shudder when he started recognising the signs of a com jam.
Something about that transport isn't right... none of the A-9s are large enough to carry a frequency jammer and the transport appears too old to be trusted with such valuable equipment. A cloaking device of some sort?

With a jolt Uris saw that he had wasted to much time thinking and not only were the rest of the squadron closing in on the A-9s quickly, Uris had also failed to alert the rest of the group to the opponent's advantage. He tried the comm again, and all he received was static, with no response to his messages. Grimacing Uris did the only thing he can -obeying the last set orders and watching helplessly as the others in his squadron found out about the jamming the hard way.
As soon as he finished this thought, he was plunged into the dogfighting between the two sides. Picking up a star fighter that had just broke right in attempt of a sandwich, Uris waited a few seconds for clearance before firing a missile at the A-9 and scored a direct hit, on the starboard side, completely obliterating the shield and calving off the starboard laser in its entirety. Smiling to himself, Uris cast a glance upwards to check the position of the transport. What he saw instinctively forced him to break right, just as bolts of laser fire passed through where he had been seconds before. Overhead was an A-9, in strafing position with its guns pointing 90 degrees downwards, narrowly missing Uris with its deadly fire-power. Even with the substantial shields of a Tie Interceptor, A-9 weaponry can reduce a star fighter to space junk in seconds.
The A-9 overhead had the advantage. It could effectively keep Uris pinned down while its damaged wing mate moved in for the kill.

By overloading his interceptor's ion engines, Uris gained some distance ahead of the A-9, and used it to angle 80 degrees upward, so that the A-9 was in close pursuit. Uris then cut his engines directly into reverse and back into forward motion once the A-9 overshot. This was a variation of “The Cobra” a tactic used long before star fighters and intergalactic travel, - now adapted to suit the new era.
The result was perfect, the A-9 was in firing range, not too close to Uris for a missile to be of no use, and with the A-9s wing mate too far away to be of assistance. Uris took careful aim and shot a missile, closely followed by a full spread of laser fire. This completely destroyed to A-9 and momentarily put the rest of the opponents on the same field as the Imperial forces, unable to use their comms. Speaking of the rest of the squadron, Uris thought, how are they doing?

Turning his fighter around, Uris saw with dismay that very few shots were getting through to the  A-9s. Looking more closely, he saw that the A-9's speed and agility weren't the problem, all of the laser fire that would ordinarily have reached the A-9s were just skidding around them, never touching the surface -or the shield for that matter- of the opposing star fighters. Something was very odd here, and Uris had a strange feeling the old transport had something to do with it. An old transport carrying rare jamming equipment? Laser fire conveniently missing the support fighters? Something was very, VERY odd.

WHAM!! WHAM!!!

The damaged A-9 had caught up with Uris, and was now pounding on his shields. Corkscrewing to meet it, Uris had no choice but to meet it, full of dread about what is about to happen. Suddenly he heard the static on the comm lift as the transport turned to fire on some ships on the out skirts of the dogfighting before turning back to centre. This was all the opportunity Uris needed to alert the squadron to the mysterious goings on.

Ibram yet off yet another volley of laser shots at the A-9 he was trying to keep up with, again seemingly to no avail.

Something’s not right here, he couldn’t help but think as he brought his fighter up and about, matching the manoeuvres of his opponent.

He would have liked to have called in Cali or Cadie for help, but not only did it seem that they had their hands full with their own opponents, but shortly after Cadie informed them of the enemy’s presence, the com channel had become filled with static and white noise.

I hate it when they do that, he had thought at the time, and funnily enough the sentiment still held ten minutes later. He guessed it was the transport that was doing it, although it wasn’t like he had the time to do anything about it.

And these A-9’s...

There was definitely something odd about them. Ibram had never considered himself an ‘Ace’, as he believed those titles were earned as opposed to self-applied, and as of yet no one had used that term in relation to him. Still, he did consider himself a good shot, and yet none of his tracers seemed to be touching the A-9, or even scratching the shield.

An explosion off to his left brought him out of his train of thought so suddenly that he almost didn’t match his opponent’s banking manoeuvre. His radar showed that Uris had just defeated his bogey with a missile, which was something. Switching his own systems to missiles, he settled in a slightly different routine of trying to get a missile lock on his opponent.

He tried contacting Uris through the coms again, try to see what the newcomer had done, but the white noise was still there.

“Gshhhhh-kill-shhhhhhhhhh-ighter-shhhhhhhhhh-wrong-shhhhhhhhhh-sport-shhhh”

Ibram frowned, Uris seemed to be saying something about the transport, but with all the static it was hard to tell.

Is it the reason why none of my lasers are getting through?

He’d never heard of remote blocking technology, although a lot of technology and knowledge from the old days was lost, not only during the formation of the Empire, but during its collapse as well. With the state of chaos the galaxy was in, the various factions were also racing to develop new weapons and technology, anything that could give them an edge.

“If only we could tell the frakking others about it,” he cursed to himself.

Ibram continued chasing his opponent for a further five minutes before he finally got a decent missile lock. How, just as he was about to pull the trigger, the A-9 suddenly slowed and dived slightly, causing Ibram to overshoot.

“Frak!” He cried as he tried to bring his fighter about, but it was too late. The A-9 had already picked up his trail.

With superior speed and agility, the A-9 was more than a match for Ibram’s TIE Interceptor, especially with the VE modifications. Ibram was going to have to use every trick in the book just to stay alive.

In the meantime, he hoped someone managed to do something about that transport...

OOC:
There you guys. Remember, no matter what someone has said before you, just roll with it unless a superior steps in otherwise and straightens things out.

Personally, I'm not sure if the technology Uris describes exists in the SW universe, but since this is a non-canon exercise, we're just going to roll with it. Important updates to note are:

*Coms are now inoperable
* A-9's are being protected by some sort of remote laser jamming technology from the transport, although only Uris & Ibram have properly figured it out.

EDIT: After talking with Uris, I realise I misinterpreted what he's saying. He's hinting that the transport as some sort of shield generator inside it, that's projecting a strong shield around each individual A-9, that's stronger then normal fighter-strength shields (A-9's don't have shields anyway, as it turns out, but we'll gloss over that.)

Again, however, after talking with Doc, I don't think mobile shield projection around fast moving objects is possible, but again, we're going to role with it for now.

Updated notes:

* Coms are being jammed
* A-9's have a high strength shield being generated around them by the transport, that only missiles can get through at the moment. Only Uris, and partially Ibram have figured this out at the moment.

You guys also need to deal with your A-9 opponent before you even think about going for the transport, so let's get creative.

Feel free to write in any debris or environmentel features that may help, but again, keep it plausible.

Good work so far people.

Jolinar was just starting to grow bored when the A-9s and the transport came into play.  “You really need to be more careful about what you wish for, Jolinar” she muttered to herself.  She’d been wishing she had something to relieve the tedium of a patrol flight, but she had been thinking along the lines of two or three enemy fighters rather than almost a dozen and a transport to boot.  Her mind went briefly to a pair of human twins she’d worked with once.  Martouf and Lantash would have jokingly told her off for conjuring something for them to fight.  Jolinar forced her mind back to the present, refusing to go any further down that line of thought.  There were things to destroy that would end up destroying her if she didn’t focus.

“Break. Take them one on one. This really shouldn't take very long guys, then we can deal with that transport.”  Jolinar grinned at Cadie’s order, and broke formation when the others did.

“Ka’ta, schutta.”  Jolinar said, lining up what should have been a kill shot.  “Osik!” Jolinar was only partially aware of her switch to Mando’a.  She was already turning her interceptor away from the A-9, which fired at her.  The shots went through where she had been.  Jolinar reached for her comm just as it degenerated into static.  Years of flying had taught her that meant a signal jam.  “Oh, so you want to play that way, do you?  Your shebs is mine.”  Jolinar wheeled sharply around to face the A-9 she’d targeted, and fired a longer blast from her lasers this time.  The shots missed, the same as they had before.  This time, Jolinar watched the way the bolts were deflected, and cursed again.  The A-9 hadn’t even tried to dodge, and that was as tell-tale as the way the bolts had been deflected.  Some chakaar had added shields.  Jolinar was tempted to go for the transport, but on her own that would be a suicide run and accomplish nothing.  She’d have to focus on taking out the A-9 she was facing, then help the others.  The A-9 was slowly following her, clearly toying with her—probably waiting to see which way she’d try to go or if she’d make a run for it.  Jolinar made a couple of feints, none of which the A-9 went for.  She wished she were in one of her personal fighters.  They were easily a match for the A-9s.  Maybe she could convince Ibram to outfit the squadron with besu’liiks, or even something like her heavily modified hawkbat.  She grinned to herself at the thought, knowing that it probably wouldn’t happen due to the expense involved if nothing else.  If she could convince him to consider it, she might be able to pull some strings and get them a discount.  That was something to think about later, though.  Jolinar watched Uris’s missiles destroy the A-9, and made a mental note to buy him a drink for being the first to take one down.  Jolinar stopped abruptly and used the momentum to spin her Interceptor back around to face the A-9 that had been following her and gaining on her.  She could feel a manic grin forming as she fired a missile, not bothering to wait for a target lock.  The surprised A-9 caught the missile on the port side and spun out of control.  The A-9s forward momentum was carrying it right for Jolinar.  Reflexes honed by countless flights before, Jolinar was diving below the damaged craft.  She cut it a bit too close and part of the A-9 barely clipped the top of one of her solar arrays.  Jolinar spun crazily for a few precious seconds before getting her fighter back under control.  Luckily for her, the A-9 pilot was still trying to control his own craft.  Adrenaline going full speed now, Jolinar gave chase and fired another missile, waiting for a target lock this time.  The A-9 exploded, scattering shrapnel throughout their little fleck of space.

“Don’t bother with lasers, guys.  Hit them with missles.”  Jolinar yelled into the comm, forgetting for a moment that it was jammed.  She winced when her words were met with a loud burst of static.  Jolinar looked for another target, and she spotted the A-9 on Ibram’s tail.  Estimating an intercept course, Jolinar fed full power to her engines and readied another missile.  Time to pull her squadron leader’s shebs out of the fire.

Lining up the damaged A-9, Uris quickly gained a lock and fired off a missile, breaking upwards immediately after to avoid the powerful lasers raking where he had been seconds before. I only hope the rest of the squadron heard my message, Uris thought, we need a coordinated strike on that transport, but with the comm jam, we're no more than an armed mob. He smiled as he saw the damaged A-9 get destroyed, and set about looking for new targets. Suddenly, Uris remembered that when the fore of the transport turned away from the main dogfighting, -if only for a few seconds- the comm jam was lifted. If only he could bait the transport to turn away from the dogfight, the rest of the squadron would be able to organise.

Uris suddenly felt a shudder as the remnants of the damaged A-9 collided with his shield, bringing him back to himself. Uris angled his Tie towards the transport and fired a spread of laser fire at it, as  much to attract it's attention, as to hope damaging it. Completing a pass, Uris made another round, this time with more success. As Uris finished firing a missile at the transport, it began to turn, in order to fire on Uris with its powerful forward mounted lasers. Uris wasn't certain about how many degrees rotation the forward lasers had. During the battle the lasers hadn't moved more than 5 degrees in any direction, but Uris was certain that the transport would have at least 10 degrees in either direction. Staying on its starboard side, Uris constantly strafed the ship, steering clear of the four turbo lasers mounted on its side. Constantly weaving, constantly diving, though no more than 10 minutes passed, it seemed an eternity before Uris managed to coax the transport into a position sideways to the dogfighting. Come on guys, use the comm already! The transport will turn back any minute now! But surprisingly, the transport didn't turn back. Uris frowned, and ran a scan for life. Very few scans penetrated shields, but fortunately scans for life were not blocked by shields yet. His console beeped and the words on the screen read, “No life signs detected, Scan was unable to run properly. Please try again.” Uris's frown deepened as he preformed another dive to shake off some laser bolts, its either that I'm too old, or this transports too new, Uris thought, Or maybe this transport is crewed by droids? Unlikely but still a possibility...
A shudder ran through his Interceptor as some turbo lasers were blocked by the last of his shields. Red lights ran through his cockpit as half of his starboard wing was sheared off by a laser. Uris only had time to grab a kit he had prepared for times like this before hitting the eject button, sending him off into space.

Uris played dead for several minutes, breathing what oxygen was left in his suit,  making sure he was not a target before getting out an oxygen tank and mask. Instead of attaching the tank to his suit, Uris held it in-between his knees, using one hand to turn the valve and the other to hold the mask, strapping the kit to his chest. Letting out a burst off gas directed away from the transport, Uris managed to propel himself towards the transport at a high velocity because of the frictionless vacuum of space. He checked the time, and saw to his dismay that in 2 minutes, he would slip out into unconsciousness, not even his classic Mon Calimari ability to breath in a foreign atmospheres like space would be able to save him. In the course of one minute, Uris managed to propel himself to the sides of one of the turbo lasers, before attaching the oxygen tank to his suit, buying him an extra minute of time. Rummaging in his kit, Uris brought out a detonation pack and placed it where he judged the weakest point of the cabin to be. Climbing clear, he discharged the pack and climbed in, entered the airlock, past the floating corpses of human controllers -presumably dead from the vacuum of space-, and sealed it behind him, and breathing fresh air again. Any second now a security team will wonder why this turbo laser had stopped firing and send down a man to investigate... But Uris had a solution for that too. He brought out a standard issue DL-44 blaster pistol from his kit and primed it. Nothing happened for several minutes, Uris stood there, patiently waiting for security to come and investigate. The rest of the squadron must think I'm dead... Uris thought sullenly.
A plan was forming inside his head. If he could get to the engineering sector, he could sabotage the Comm Jammer, allowing himself and the squadron communication with each other. Uris was well equipped for such a task. He had stashed his  kit with large amounts of explosive, and some other nifty gadgets. He had just finished this thought when the door slid open...
