This is a welcome story for White_Lightning. All Nazzies are welcome to join in, as are any other naval members who take an interest. If any other new pilots would like to incorporate their welcome story, feel free.

Note: This is not an official Nazgul story, just free posting experience for anyone who wants it.

Drac slumped into the chair behind his desk with a sigh and rubbed his eyes. All the typical end-of-mission stuff had just wrapped up, which would drain anyone. Not to mention the stress of the Anoat mission itself. On top of that, however, he'd gotten some of the worst news he could have expected. Both Mobarin, the new guy, and Albino, his trusted wingman, were leaving he squadron to pursue other activities. They weren't the only ones to go, but the combination was pretty devastating. As of right now, Three Flight consists of me...and me. It wasn't exactly the most encouraging thing, especially since it had been his first mission as a flight leader.

Leaning back in the seat, Drac reviewed the situation, Well, it's possible that I could get some new pilots. That'd be the best thing. On the other hand, there aren't a lot of recruits coming our way these days. Add that to the fact that I'm the most junior flight leader by far, and I have to seriously question whether I'll still be one in a few days...that'd be okay, I suppose. I could go back to being a regular flight member if I need to.

The console beeped, interrupting his reverie with a New Message alert. The Mon Cal pilot straightened in his chair and keyed in the code to pull up the message: The holopad began to glow brighter, then the sender's image coalesced. Drac saluted and was about to speak when Slasher did, "Drac. Don't bother talking back, this is just a recording." Slasher shifted in the image and winced, touching his side softly where he'd been wounded, "I need to talk to you about a few things in private...we'll talk soon, so keep yourself available." He paused and Drac almost shut down the projector, thinking the message was over, then the SCPO spoke again, smiling now, "Oh, by the way. Driver wants you to report to squadron HQ. There's someone there who'll need to speak with you. I think you'll find the topic to your liking." Slasher's image faded, still smiling.

Hmmph...that was odd. Well, one does well not to worry about next cycle's tides before this cycle's hit. The Petty Officer stood up, straightened his uniform, and exited his room. Turning down the hall, his steps faded away in the direction of the squadron's HQ area.

-----
When Drac stepped through the door into the foyer, he nodded to the secretarial droid at the desk, "I'm supposed to meet someone here?"

The droid nodded jerkily, "Yes, Petty Officer Mihawk. Leading Crewman Xan is waiting for you in the squadron lounge." The droid lifted an arm, holding out a datacard, "Ensign Atrasin requested that I give this to you, sir."

"Ah. Thanks." Drac took the card, then turned and walked through the hatch that led to Nazgul's "lounge." It didn't fit its name well, as it would probably class somewhere between a rec room and a bar, but the Nazzies liked that just fine. As he entered, the Petty Officer spotted a pale green Falleen female sitting at one of the tables. He nodded to her, and glanced at the datacard as he made his way over. The info it gave wasn't much, but it was all that was required.

After an exchange of salutes the two sat down again and Drac motioned to the datacard, "I see that you're my new pilot. Welcome to Nazgul. I'm Petty Officer 2nd Class Dracule Mihawk...call me Drac. I'll be your flight leader and your wingman. My designation is Nazgul 9, and yours will be 10. Our squadron commander is Ensign Atrasin, or Driver as we call him. Our XO is Senior Chief Petty Officer Hunter Morrell... I'd introduce you to the rest of Third Flight, but we're it at the moment..." He was silent for a second, then continued, "So, let's hear some about you. Feel free to ask any questions you have too."

White Lightning smiled nervously, and thought for a few moments before answering "Drac" as he liked to be called. After gathering both her thoughts and her wits, she answered him.

"My proper name is Qayla Xan, though I have taken the calllsign "White_Lightning" because of something that happened in my past. It's nothing bad. Let me explain."

She shifted position in the chair and crossed her long, dancer-like legs, and began to tell the Petty Officer about herself.

My callsign comes from when I was in school. In secondary school I was on the track team, and had the fastest time of anyone on the team. I ran so quickly that I looked like a blur to most of my team-mates and all of my opponents. That's what earned me the nickname "White_Lightning".

"However, I get too far ahead of myself. The reason why there is not much to tell about myself is that I lived in an orphanage until a few years ago. I only have a few assorted papers that mention my family, but do not give me any idea of there whereabouts or if they are even still on this side of the veil. "

She paused for a moment, to watch for a reaction as well as to gather her thoughts.

"When I was old enough, I signed myself out of the orphanage, and struck out on my own. Anything was better than the 2-bed room that I had. I rarely saw  the outside, unless I was walking to the transport to go to school, or out on the track during gymnastics. That wasn't the life I wanted so I got out while the getting was good. "

"I did lots of odd jobs until I met a ship owner/captain/pirate whatever you would style him, and he offered me passage in return for the services of ship-keeping (a bit like housekeeping, but shipboard) as well as being his interpreter, when the need arose. As this sounded like a good deal, I took it. "

She paused again, this time to quiet her nerves, as she noticed her heart was beating at a mile a minute.

"It seemed he knew someone in the Vast Empire's Academy, and after talking to them, he talked to me about it and I agreed to sign on. It was the best decision I ever made, and I still get communicque's from him now and again, asking how I'm doing. "

"After I get settled in, I'll send him a note letting him know I'm fine. I'm also going to ask him how in Rao's name he knew anyone in the VE? It does seem a bit strange that someone of his calibre could pull strings so easily. Maybe the rest of my training here will give me the knowledge I need to figure this all out. "

She stopped, and watched as the Petty Officer recorded a few things, before he met her gaze. "That's all there really is to tell....unless you have some questions for me?"

Drac considered for a moment, weighing her words, "Well, there's certainly no problem with your past. In fact, as things go it's pretty tame. More interesting than mine, but much smoother than those of the various pilots who used to be Mercs, pirates, bounty hunters, etc."

Qayla looked curious at Drac's comment, so he elaborated on his own history, "I'm from a relatively normal Mon Calamarian family on Dac. I grew up dealing with Imperial bias, much as you probably did, but decided that the chaos the Rebellion causes is worse. That's especially true now that the Emperor is gone. My family disagrees, especially my father, but there's little they can do about that now. And that, more or less, is the story of my life up to this point.

"I do have a few questions for you, though. I'll list them off: First, can you give me details about your piloting experience? When, where, type of craft, combat experience? That sort of thing. Secondly, what skills do you have in ground combat? Nazgul, being an elite unit, tends to be sent on missions most squadrons can't handle. That includes spying, infiltration, and running blasterfights. A good example is that I've got more ground kills than aerial kills." He shrugged, "You come to expect it. The only predictable thing about Nazgul is that it's completely unpredictable."

Slasher was walking into the Nazgul Lounge after a session with the medical droid. The bacta was doing its work, but it was taking time. It wasn't so much that Slasher minded being wounded, but he had been somewhat distracted of late.

Ever since the revelations that had taken place during the mission some of his squadron mates had been avoiding him. This didn't surprise Slasher that much, they had served together for a long time, but they had not known of his other side until during this most recent mission.

As he entered the room, Slasher could not help but overhear Drac's comment about how Nazgul was an elite unit. Slasher was one of only two people on active duty with the Unit who had been there when the unit won that honor. While Hunter had been serving at the time when Nazgul won the honor, he was serving in the old Kaph Squadron.

Seeing Drac sitting at a table talking to a young Falleen female, Slasher is walking over and is about to greet the two of them when suddenly White_Lightning jumps to her feet and snaps off a crisp salute.

Returning the salute Slasher says, "As you were,"

sitting down with the two of them he says, "So Drac, how are you and Qayla here getting along?"

"You know her already?" responds Drac in a surprised voice.

"Yes I know her," responds Slasher, "You forget, I'm the Chief of Staff at the Academy."

Realising that Slasher wouldn't have known what she and Drac were discussing, she got him caught up on things before answering the questions that had been posed to her. Then, she continued where she and the Petty Officer had left off.

"My only piloting experience was onboard the ship that eventually brought me to the Vast Empire. That ship was a very heavily modified YT-1300. This ship had modifications on it that made me think that the guy was either an engineering genius or had one Hell of a bullseye painted on him, because this thing was definitely armed to the teeth."

She paused for a few seconds when she saw the reaction on Drac's face.

"Oddly enough, the craft was painted in camoflage colours of the mottled green variety. To me, this hinted that he either was in the service, or would have liked to have been. In any case, I saw a little bit of "action" and did do my time as co-pilot as well as weapons control when we got into a scrape or two. I didn't have a lot of time-in when it came to those positions, as I was only with him for a little over a year and a half, but...it was enough to dry what was wet-behind-the-ears."

She chuckled and then continued.

"You've asked me what skills I have in ground combat? If you're looking for a highly-seasoned veteran, I have to admit, sadly, that I'm not the one for whom you've sought. However, if you're looking for someone who won't back down from a fight, and will give a rather rough beating to anyone standing within fist-range, you've got it. I'm not known to have a temper, but woe betide the person who threatens a squad mate. They soon find out I don't have reptilian blood for nothing. I can be colder than the vacuum of space when confronted that way."

The shock on their faces told her they didn't really expect that out of a female, and it made her smile, slightly. She'd surprised them.

"As for what types of skills I have that would back up any ground combat we might see, I can only list what I learned either at the military academy or when I was with the pilot who brought me here. My marksmanship earned me quite a few accolades when I was in the academy, as did my hand-t0-hand combat skills. My melee skills, though not as stellar as my marksmanship, would get me out of trouble, even though I'd take quite a beating myself. If you'd like, you can test me."

"As for spying and infiltration, which you did mention; my having light green skin would allow me to blend in to almost any surrounding, and would definitely give me an advantage when it came to stealth tactics."

Almost as an afterthought, she added...

"I could request a list of my accomplishments from the academy as well as transcripts from the schools I attended, if you desire. But, that's up to you."

As Eaglle approached the Atrus, He realized that he was quite nervous on what he would say to his new commanders. He did well on his exam, but he knew that that wouldn't mean anything when it comes to a real mission, and he has heard rumors about Nazgul being the elite, but nothing for sure.

Eaglle landed in the hanger bay, and exited the back of his fighter. He walked toward the entrance door, and entered the main area of the ship. He looked at his orders again to see were he was supposed to go. Hmm... 3rd Flight, Nazgul Squadron, he read again. As he was walking, he almost bumped into a droid that was waiting there for someone.

"Eaglle0100? I'm told to escort you to the Nazgul lounge for a meeting with your new flight" the droid said.

Ah well I guess the droid was waiting for me Eaglle thought. "Alright then," he said to the droid.

The droid leads him into what looks to be some type of bar, with a Mon Calamari, and 2 Faleens sitting at one table, with other people scattered around. "Your flight and commander are over there," the droid say's, pointing to the table.

Eaglle walks up to the table, a little unsure of what to say, and a little nervous about what his commanders first impression of him is going to be. Just as he gets close, the group stands up and leaves.

sigh... I guess i will just wait here and get something to drink till they come back he thought to himself

"That's alright. If I need to know anything I can ask Slasher quicker than I can pry it out of Ensign Bacredi anyway," he grinned, then stood. "If you'd like, I'd be happy to show you around the squadron's area here on the Atrus."

"It's my reason for being here, at least at the moment." She shrugged and stood.

Drac looked over at Slasher and said, "You can join us if you want, Chief. Either way works."

-----

The first place Drac took his new pilot was, of course, the hangar. He walked in, pointing out things of interest and introducing Qayla to the mechanics. Introductions made, they headed over to the fighter craft hanging in ranks on the launch racks. Drac pointed out Driver's ship, the newest looking of the lot. The Squadron Commander had lost his old fighter when an X-wing blew it away at the squadron's landing zone in the Anoat asteroid belt.

The second ship the Mon Cal pointed out was Qayla's. It hung in the middle of the formation, in the second position of the third row. It showed a little use, but was practically brand new as well. The fighter to the left of it, Drac's ship, was partially supported by a mobile repair scaffold. A rodian mechanic, his head and shoulders hidden in the depths of an access panel, was working on it. Qayla asked, "Is he doing routine maintenance?"

Frowning, Drac replied, "No...I got hit by an asteroid during the insertion on our last mission. It damaged my shield generator, but my shields held just enough, which is why I'm still here." Turning his attention back to the mechanic, he called out, "How's she looking, Andesh?"

The rodian pulled himself out of the access panel and turned to look down at the group, "It's going okay. It'd be going better if you didn't feel the need to bust your ship up every mission, Drac...another two or three hours and she'll be as good as new though."

"Sounds good, Andesh, thanks." The group finished their quick tour of the hangar, then moved on.

-----

The next area they visited was the squadron's ready room, where they got all of their briefings and accomplished the bulk of the other work involved in keeping the squadron going. While they were there Drac pointed out the lockers that held everyone's gear, and Qayla's locker in particular.

As they wrapped up their tour of Nazgul's headquarters area, Drac checked the datacard one more time then turned toward the squadron's living quarters, "I'll show you your room, then you can decide where we go from there...wait, have you met Driver yet?"

She mulled over that last question, quite unsure of who 'Driver' was. After not being able to match a face with a name, she responded: "No. I don't think we've met. However, I'm sure I'll get to meet everyone in the squadron before we go on our next mission."

She smiled, and then said to Drac: "By the way, the one place you've not shown me yet, other than my quarters, is our mess hall. The lounge is nice for a quick snack and a drink, or to have some place quiet to look over your mission notes, but...one does have to have somewhere to get a decent meal."

Drac nodded, "Sure, no problem. By the way, Driver is the squadron commander's callsign. If you want to be formal, he's Ensign Geordi Atrasin. Anyhow, come along this way and I'll show you the mess hall. After we see that I'll take you to meet Driver." Turning, Drac walked out of the room...and nearly slammed into the 3PO droid that had handed him the datacard on Qayla earlier, "Sithspit! Watch it there, Poe, my skin's a little softer than yours is."

The 3PO unit's head tilted, somehow conveying uncertainty, "I apologize, Petty Officer. I will endeavor to be more careful in the future."

"It's fine, Poe. Did you need me for something?"

"Yes, sir. I was instructed to give you this..." the droid handed the Mon Cal pilot another datacard.

Skimming the card, Drac was pleased to learn that he'd gotten another pilot, "Eaglle, eh? Sounds good. Is he here yet, Poe?"

The droid's arms waved somewhat in excitement, "Yes, sir. As I was about to inform you, sir, Leading Crewman Eaglle0100 is awaiting you in the squadron lounge."

"Thanks, Poe," Drac tucked the datacard into a pocket, leaving his hands free again, "I'll go greet him now."

"It was my pleasure, sir." The 3PO's head jerked down then back up in a small, awkward bow.

Waving Qayla along behind him, Drac turned to the door leading to the lounge, "Looks like we've got another pilot for the flight. Let's go pick him up and we can continue on our tour." Opening the door, he entered and spotted a young human sitting at one of the tables. Approaching the man, he returned his salute and spoke first, "Senior Crewman Eaglle0100?"

"Yes, sir. I'm guessing you're my commander?" The man glanced back and forth, clearly getting confused by the fact that the male Falleen outranked the Mon Cal who had approached him first.

Smiling, Drac nodded, "More or less. I'm Petty Officer 2nd Class Dracule Mihawk. If you don't like titles, it's just Drac. I'll be your Flight Leader here in Nazgul's Three Flight. You'll meet our XO and SC pretty soon I should think. Meanwhile, the Senior Chief Petty Officer here is Slasher. He's the Flight Leader for Four Flight. The other is Leading Crewman White_Lightning, another new pilot in the squadron."

As Drac made the introductions each pair shook hands. When he was done Eaglle looked at him again, "So what's next, sir?"

OOC:
Go ahead and flesh out your first meeting, guys. We'll move on to the Mess Hall and meeting with the SC/XO after that.

As she shook hands with the newest member of the squadron, she introduced herself.

"Qayla Xan, aka White_Lightning or Naz-10. I'm glad to meet you. Welcome to the squadron. I hope your time here will be very rewarding."

She then played the part of hostess when she asked: "Might I get you a drink? I was just going to grab something myself."

With that, she walked over to the bar and got a glass of Bespin Port, then came back to the group to continue the rest of the tour.

However, since the tour wouldn't be for a few minutes anyway, Qayla realised it would give her time to get acquainted with her new squadmate.

"Since we've already been introduced, Eagle, why don't you tell me a little about yourself."

"Sure thanks, nice to meet you" Eaglle said as he orders a glass of whiskey. "Any way, my name is actually eaglle0100, believe it or not, but I am fine with Eaglle, and I dont get mad if anyone accidentally call's me Eagle It makes my call sign easier. Its pretty much an ancient family name."

"The entire time I was growing up on Kuat, I have seen Imperial ships being built and moving along in the sky, and I was fascinated with it. Because of this fascination, I was just a little upset when the 'New' Republic took over the fleet yards and they stopped building star destroyers." eaglle say's sarcastically. "Naturally, I got a ride to the Vast Empire, but I had to do a little piloting of my own, in which I found out that I wasn't half bad. That brings me to the Academy, and then to here."

Eaglle takes a sip of his whiskey, then adds, "Now that I said my story, why don't you tell me yours, and I will get you a drink next time we go here," and then listen's carefully as White Lightning recounts here story to him.

*whistles* I like you guys. Keep it up and you'll do very well here. One thing to note: Nazgul posts must be at least 500 words minimum, preferably 750. Since this is unofficial that doesn't strictly apply, but remember it. It's best if you practice now so it comes easier during a mission.

I'll go ahead and move the story along here in a few hours. Gotta go atm.

Qayla smiles warmly at her squadmate, who was very quickly becoming a friend.

"Actually, there isn't really too much to tell. I'm a 20 year old Falleen who was raised in an orphanage. When I left the orphanage I had a few odd jobs before connecting with a Corellian whose ship was docked at my last place of work. The place actually repaired and upgraded ships of all kinds, but I worked as their Public Relations Assistant."

She paused a moment as Eaglle took in the information. After he had digested the information, she continued.

"The Captain, after having spoken with me for a bit, had offered me passage in exchange for my help in piloting and communications. As we did also see some action, I had a hand in the weapons and tactical controls as well. I am also a very capable hand-to-hand combatant, even though I saw precious little of that type of action."

"I was with Captain Ross for a little over a year when I came to the Vast Empire's Academy. After completing the required courses at the Academy, I was placed in Nazgul Squadron. I've been with Nazgul since my placement on 05 May, having attended Academy from 30 April until my present placement."

"Hopefully, I'll not only be able to prove that Nazgul Squadron has a valuable asset in this Falleen, but also be able to find information on my real family as well. It would be nice if I could fit all the pieces together, but my life won't fall apart if I can't."

Drac made small talk with Slasher while the two new pilots got to know each other. There was plenty for the two flight leaders to discuss, from maintenance and supplies to past battles and possible future actions. After a minute or two of talking he out a bottle of green stuff and sat at one of the tables with the Falleen, saying, "I don't think I'm going to use explosives so much from now on. I mean, they were effective enough at Anoat, but I don't like how it made me act...it's not good to enjoy causing violence like that."

"I think I know what you mean. On the other hand, we've got to be merciless in some cases. Sometimes the only way to neutralize someone is to kill them, and sometimes that can get messy."

Drac sighed, "You're right, there. It just doesn't seem to fit with the ideal of protecting civil order and the innocent."

"Something we all have to deal with for ourselves at some point..." Slasher mused. "By the way, how did it go with the demolitions side of things? We could hear and feel some of the explosions, but couldn't make out any details."

"Well, the first several blasts you heard were probably rocket munitions from the pirates. Fortunately, none of those hit anyone. Another would have been me creating a distraction to cover a flanking maneuver Hunter was leading."

"I do recall hearing several smaller blasts, but then there was one big one before some more small ones. What was that?"

Drac chuckled, "I had to hit the deck or get burned down by a pirate, and when I did I landed on a vent...that led straight into their main hangar. I opened it up for a look and may have dropped a couple of bombs into it. The results were rather spectacular.

"After we cleared that area we eventually found their comm center and armory. We disabled the comm, and piled all the weapons in the armory into one big pile, with a bomb on bottom. We started to clear the area, but a gang of pirates charged up. They ran into the armory to get weapons after seeing our effectiveness...as you can imagine, the results of that decision weren't good for them."

Laughing at that, Slasher nodded, "That would have been the really big blast we felt. For a second there thought the asteroid might break up."

"Imagine being only a hundred meters or so away from it." The Mon Cal shook his head, "Not long after that we got the message to return to the fighters. We chose a different route back, found the atmospheric generators, and wired them to blow as we passed through. They went up about the time we got to the fighters."

The two conversations lasted another couple of minutes, then Drac checked his chrono and stood, "Ten. Eleven. If we want to catch Ensign Atrasin or CPO Morrell in their office, we need to head over there now."

-----

The walk was a short one, but it looked to Drac like it was long enough to letthe new pilots get a little nervous. They had nothing to fear, though, at least as long as nothing had pissed Driver off. He'd seen Driver get mad before, and it wasn't anything to laugh at. That shouldn't be a problem today, though. While the mission to Anoat had not gone off perfectly, the squadron came away from it in better shape than they came away from the Ator mission.

When the group arrived at Driver's office they ran into Poe again. Drac flagged down the droid for a moment, "Poe, come over here for a second."

"How may I be of service to you, sir?" The droid sketched a jerky, splay-limbed bow.

"Do you know if Ensign Atrasin is in his office at the moment? Or Chief Hunter?"

Poe's head cocked to one side, "I believe SCPO Hunter-Morrell is in Ensign Atrasin's office, sir, along with the Ensign."

"Thank you, Poe. Dismissed."

Walking over to the door to the office, the Petty Officer knocked politely, saying, "Driver, if you have a moment I'd like to introduce our two new pilots."

Hunter had been pacing in front of Atrasin’s desk for a couple minutes. Sighing, he sat down in a chair and leaned back in it, bringing it onto just its back two legs. Atrasin just shook his head slightly and closed his eyes. The two had been sitting in Atrasin’s office for near on ten minutes, waiting for the new Nazgul flight members to arrive. If he knew Drac, they’d be arriving any moment.

“Should we possibly discuss something while we wait?” Hunter said, offering up something to break the silence.

Atrasin started to open his mouth when there was a knock on the door followed by a familiar voice.

"Driver, if you have a moment I'd like to introduce our two new pilots." Drac said.

“Come in.” Atrasin replied slowly.

“It’s about time.” Hunter muttered with a roll of his eyes.

He was quickly shut up when Atrasin shot him a nasty look which quickly turned into a welcoming one as the door shot open and the group of four piled in. After nodding to Slasher and Drac as they came in, bringing up the rear, Hunter watched the two recruits. He already knew who they were from the Naval Academy, although he didn’t have the opportunity to teach the two, he did watch them from afar. Both had caught his attention early on with their performances in exercises and on exams, especially eaglle who had achieved a perfect score on the Aviator’s Exam, which was required to be able to graduate out of the Academy

This ought to be interesting. Both are good pilots from what I’ve seen and both know how to handle themselves on the ground in case of a crash.

“This is Qayla Xan, also called White_Lightning.” Drac said, “and this is Eaglle.”

“Welcome to Nazgul Squadron you two. I hope you’ll enjoy it here. I’m Atrasin, the Squadron Commander of Nazgul, and this Hunter Morrell, the Executive Officer. I’m assuming you know him from the Naval Academy?” Driver said, looking puzzled at the confused looks on the faces of the two recruits after he had finished.

Laughing softly, Hunter said, “While I did see them from time to time in the Academy, I never was able to teach them. They were assigned to others.”

Atrasin nodded, turned back to the pair, and started talking again. It was mainly about what he expects from them, what he doesn’t want them to act like, etc. All of it but the first sentence, Hunter tuned out, him having retreated into the sanctuary of his own mind.

Qayla found her voice and spoke up.

"What Hunter says is correct, Sir. I was instructed by Ensign Bacredi. He was rather thorough, and I did learn quite a bit from him. However, I count each new experience as a learning tool, whether it be meeting other people, or learning how to pilot a new ship, or anything else. One can never know all there is to know, so there is always plenty of room to expand one's knowledge base."

She paused a moment, watching the Squadron Commander's features for a reaction. The fact that this was one person she found very hard to read, had her a bit puzzled. One thing she knew she was sure of was that she hadn't offended him.

Figuring that the Squadron Commander had her information, she didn't really need to call up any of that information on her datapad. However she did have some new information that she hadn't had added to her profile yet. It was this that she called up and handed to the Commander.

"Sir, I'm not sure if you have the information concerning my hand-to-hand combat training, so I have called up the information on the datapad for you to enter into my record. It also has my medical profile on there, if you wish to also have that information. It might be a good thing to have in case of injury befalling me during a mission. I'm not reckless, but neither am I perfect. "

Eaglle throat got a little tense when he saw both of his superiors officers in one room. He had to stand there, feeling like an idiot untill White_Lighting spoke up, then he was able to relax, feeling that he did not have to speak first after that long rant by Slasher.

I wonder if all new recruits feel like this... Eaglle thinks.

"I do remember you teaching me some at the Academy, Sir" he say's to Hunter, "I believe you taught me the basics. Ensign Bacredi taught me the details for the final exam though."

A quick though of mentioning his performance on the test came to his mind, but Eaglle quickly dismissed it as he was sure they already knew, and did not want to seem like bragging.

Eaglle was about to continue, but then saw a look in Slasher's eye, something like he was upset over something that happened recently.

I guess something happened at the last mission I heard some commotion about as I came in... eaglle thinks to himself. interesting... I hope I didn't replace any of the deceased or badly injured from that last flight.

After Driver finished giving the new pilots the standard scare speech, or some version of it, Drac stepped forward and said, "Thanks for your time, sir."

"No problem, Nine. Where are you headed after this?" Atrasin leaned back in his chair, relaxing somewhat now that the formalities were over with.

Waving a hand in the general direction of the door, Drac replied, "I was planning to take these two to do some simulator work, see how they do. Better to become a team now, than when we're under fire."

"Good." Driver looked at each of the new pilots, "Good luck, Crewmen. Follow Drac's lead."

Drawing the Ensign's attention again, the Mon Cal asked, "Anything new from the top yet, Driver?"

The human officer shook his head, "Not yet, but it probably won't be long. That's a discussion for another time, though. Dismissed."

Drac returned the salute and led Qayla and Eaglle back out of the office and toward the simulator complex, "That wasn't too bad, eh?" Turning around, he saw they were both a little paler than before, "Well, he can be intimidating I guess. Don't worry, you'll be glad to serve with Driver once you get to know him. There aren't many officers in the fleet who do their job better, if any."

-----

Once the group arrived at the simulator complex Drac pointed toward the squadron's machines. Since Nazgul flew Avengers, rather than the standard Interceptors, their simulators were of a more advanced model as well, "Go ahead and suit up. Once we're all ready I'll outline the mission for you." As the two pilots went to comply, Drac approached a nearby tech and began speaking with him.

Once he finished talking to the tech, the Mon Cal quickly suited up and climbed into one of the simulators. His cockpit remained black for some twenty seconds, then resolved itself into a launch bay in a standard Imperial Class Star Destroyer, Mark II. He flicked his comm channel over to the squadron frequency, "Okay, Nazzies. We're using the designation 'Black Group' for this run. I'm Black One or Black Leader, White_Lightning's Black Two, and Eaglle's Black Three. Activate your engines, perform a system check, and report back."

While he waited, Drac performed his own checks. His engines came up smoothly, his lasers and shields powered up, and his missile tubes showed green, "Black Leader, two lit and all green."

"Leader, Two. Ready to go."

"Leader, Three. Everything's fine here."

"Good. Now comes the hard part. Our mission is to intercept a small rebel transport that's launching from the planet below. Intelligence reports that it's escorted by a full flight of snubfighters, so they'll have a four to three advantage on us. We're to shoot down all enemy craft and finish by vaping the transport."

Hitting a switch, the Petty Officer moved to the main comm channel, "Control, Black One. All green. Requesting permission to launch on intercept run."

"Black One, permission granted. Shoot straight and turn fast."

"Will do, Control..." The signal fizzed and popped as he flipped channels again, "Okay, Black Flight, we have a go. Follow me out, one on each wing." He suited actions to words, thumbing the button that detached his fighter from its brackets and pushing it forward into a dive down out of the hangar bay. As soon as he cleared the ship he activated his shields and examined his scanner for the objective. The transport was about ten klicks out, and coming straight at them. A moment later more detailed data began to scroll across his flatscreen, and he forwarded it to the others, "Blacks, here's what we're up against."

OOC:
Okay, guys. Go ahead and run through your preparation from the time we entered the simulator complex and begin to engage the enemy. This is a pretty good spot to rack up some impressive word counts.

Slasher watched on the viewscreen outside of the training simulators that showed what was taking place in the simulated mission that the new pilots of 3 flight were facing. Slasher crosses his arms and leans in closer, reviewing the specs of the fighters which they were facing. Which was really not necessary, since he himself had owned a Toscan, and had flown it in combat a couple times, giving him a good taste of the capabilities of that particular class of fighter. Turning to talk to one of the technicians, Slasher suddenly doubles over in pain, clutching his side where he had been stabbed during the last mission, and gasping for air.

One of the technicians, seeing the way in which the Senior Chief was holding his side, and remembering that he had been seriously injured during the squadron's most recent mission, immediately understood what was going on, and rushing over to Slasher's side the technician yells,

"CORPSMAN!"

Immediately there are several corpsmen in the room, rushing over to the Flight Leader, who had now collapsed to the floor. After checking his vital signs, and deciding that he is safe to move, the corpsman pick him up and carry him to the Atrus' sick bay. Where he is immediately examined by the current duty doctor when it is mentioned that the cause of the problem is thought to be a combat wound from his last mission. The doctor has Slasher put on one of the operating tables, because he is not sure exactly what they are going to have to do in order to deal with the cause of the current problem.

“What exactly happened?” asks the doctor,

“He was in the simulator room, watching one of the flights run through a simulation, and he turned toward one of the technicians, and then all of a sudden he was doubled over in what appeared to be pain, and then he had collapsed by the time the corpsmen got there.

“well let's take a look at that wound,” the doc thinks out loud, as he removes the tunic of the Senior Chief's uniform, and begins to remove the bandages from his wound. Immediately after he removes the bandage the wound begins to freely bleed again. Moving to staunch the flow of blood, the doctor tells the attending corpsman who is working as his secretary/assistant,

“This wound is having a hard time healing for some reason, we need to do some special bacta treatments, and he needs to stay off of his feet for a while.”

“what are the doctor's orders sir?”

“Let's get localized bacta treatments for the area of the wound, and he needs to be taken off the flight line for at least the next week. Until that time he is to be restricted to either Minimal duties at a desk, or be restricted from duty entirely.”

“Aye sir.”

Eaglle put on his suit while he thought about what he had seen of the squadron so far. He liked the seemed informality of the squadron, but was a little scared at some of the talks that were given about what happens if you dont report in or leave without permission.

Being killed never sounds fun he thought to himself on that topic as he finished getting his suit on.

He turned and looked at the simulators, and was a little surprised. erm... these are the newer models... this ought to be interesting as i dont have as much time on these as the other ones he thought.

He saw Drac get in to the first simulator, and then got into the 3rd one down as he was the third person in this flight. His cockpit was inside of a hanger, ah... that an ISD m2 he recalled from his training. He then got a tad startled as he heard over the comm, "Okay, Nazzies. We're using the designation 'Black Group' for this run. I'm Black One or Black Leader, White_Lightning's Black Two, and Eaglle's Black Three. Activate your engines, perform a system check, and report back".

Eaglle flicked on the engines, and ran a system's check, and finding everything good said, "Leader, Three. Everythings fine here"

When Drac replies, "Good. Now comes the hard part. Our mission is to intercept a small rebel transport that's launching from the planet below. Intelligence reports that it's escorted by a full flight of snubfighters, so they'll have a four to three advantage on us. We're to shoot down all enemy craft and finish by vaping the transport," eaglle feels a little apprehensive about the odds, as he didn't know what snubfighters they were.

Lets hope its not those A-wings, or worse he thought to himself. When Drac gave the squadron the go, eaglle pushed one button, detaching the fighter, then waited a second to get on Drac's left wing, then eased the stick forward into a dive, and flicked another switch that turned on his shields, activating a row of LED's indication his shield strength left. He immediately spotted the freighter on his scanner, and saw Drac start to approach closer to the target.

Just then, he received a comm message from the main base, "All Blacks, just a heads up, Slasher is having medical issues and will not be able to watch this mission right now"

Thats not good at all. I will have to find out what happened on that last mission, Eaglle thought to himself

When Drac sent the data of the fighters to him, he felt a little better. Those fighters are pretty outdated, so we should be able to counteract those odds. We will have to watch out for the freighter though, that is more modern with some significant armament.

Eaglle flicked a switch with his left thumb, activating his missiles as he wouldn't want to have them not launch, and then switched his blaster to linked burst. As he approached, he turned a nob in the center the the third fighter down, which still hadn't spotted him for some reason.

A there we go He thought to himself as he saw 3 of the fighters turn toward the flight, and a light on his LED showed that they were trying to get a lock. his missiles locked on and he got ready to fire as soon as Drac gave the order, or fired, whichever one came first

OOC:
Good combat post, eaglle. The control details are very nice.

Just so you both know, we're running with proton torpedoes rather than the standard concussion missiles (Our Avengers can hold 4 missiles).

This'll be a short post on my part.

Drac bit back a concerned curse when Control came over the comm channel with news of Slasher's collapse. Maybe I should end the sim and go check on him...no, I can't do anything for him right now and sitting around doing waiting is no good option.

The Petty Officer turned his attention back to the task at hand, focusing on the oncoming ships. Switching to proton torpedos, he settled his targeting reticule over the Toscan closest to center. A moment later a lock tone sounded and the reticule turned green.

Rather than firing, Drac flipped his comm unit back to Control's channel, "Control, this is Black Leader. Activate the Training Protocol thirty seconds after my mark...Mark."

"Training protocol activation order confirmed, Black Leader."

Drac switched back to the squadron channel, confirmed his lock, and activated his comm unit again, "Blacks, use on torp on the snubbies. Save your other three for that freighter. Do you have locks?" The others confirmed that they did, "Fire on my mark...Mark." Drac thumbed the button that controlled his missile launcher, sending a proton torpedo on its way toward the enemy formation as two other torpedos flashed out from the other Avengers.

Even the torpedos, fast as they were, could not cross a distance instantly. When they were halfway there space boiled off the bow of the freighter as four more Toscans jumped in from hyperspace. Let's see what they think of this. "Blacks, we've got four more unfriendlies out here. Watch each others backs, coordinate, and we'll get through this."

Qayla watched as the "unfriendlies" as her leader called them came into her range. "Cover me!" she said over the comm, as they came toward her. She waited until she had the enemy right where she wanted him, and fired. She hit her intended target, smashing it to bits, and cooking his partner.

Realising she'd gotten her quarry, she nearly let out a battle yell, but thought better of it. There were till two more out there, and she had to keep her wits, or she'd still be behind the eight-ball...or worse.

Dropping back to keep an eye on Eaglle, she kept an eye out for the other two enemy craft that were left. Lightning bolts they were not, but they could definitely come in fast enough to surprise you if you were careless about keeping an eye on your scope.

She watched as Eaglle vaped one of the enemy craft, and that meant that there was only one more left. "Good shot!" she yelled "Now don't get cocky!" She chuckled to herself, as she thought back to what the captain of the other ship had said to her. She never thought that the day would come that she'd be in the "driver's" seat with someone who didn't have the same experience level as she did. He was good, none-the-less, and she had to acknowledge that he did seem to have a natural sense of control.

They both saw the last one, but he was closer to it, so she let him fire at it, and she provided cover. When it was apparent that the last one had been vaporised, she took her fingers off the firing controls. "Good job!" she said. "I hope you're that good in an actual situtation. It would be an honour to have you as a partner out there."

== Right after we launch the missiles ==

Eaglle was shifting his target to the fourth star fighter when he also saw the bow of the freighter shimmer as the 4 snub fighters jumped out of hyper space. When Drac gave the warning to watch people back, eaglle was a bit worried as he didn't have an assigned wing, so would be a little less safe, but he decided to stick with the other 2 and be a 3rd wing.

Eaglle glanced at his monitor as he saw his torpedo hit soundly, destroying the fighter. He was about to shout "One!" when he heard Qayla say, "Good shot! Now don't get cocky!"

Oops, thats right... It is only a sim eaglle thought. Now its time to focus on the 6 that are left Just then, he saw drac's missile slam into another fighter. um... make that five.

Eaglle realized that in the frenzy he had gotten a little ahead of the formation, when he saw the 4th fighter trying to get behind him, close to him. Hmm, this ones closer to me, I'll get it then form up Eaglle let it get around his 5:00, then cut his throttle back to the minimum and pulled the stick back, gaining altitude letting the snub fighter overshoot. As soon as it was past him, he pushed the stick forward, diving, and lined up right behind the other fighter, then pushed the firing stud, blowing up the snubfighter. As soon as it exploded, he jammed his stick down, diving, then turned back into the formation, just in time to see Drac fire off a proton torpedo hitting the fighter that had lined up behind him.

"Oops... thanks for saving my skin there... next time I should follow your advice a little better Qayla" eaglle say's as he realizes that the expanding cloud of debris could have been "him" as far as the simulator can make it. "I'm going to say that was my one rookie mistake..." eaglle continues as he remembered that most people make at least one mistake as a fighter, but very few survive the second. even though this is only a sim.

"Good job Drac!" Qayla said over the comm as she fired at two more 'uglies' that had entered her crosshairs. Watching them both explode like miniature fireworks on the fourth of July, she found a feeling of satisfaction crawl up her spine. Realising that she'd left Eaglle without protection again, she dropped back to give him some cover in case the remaining uglies tried any tricks.

Scanning her instrumentation for more targets, she didn't see anything until.... "Incoming at 3 o'clock!" She watched as Drac vaped the enemy, and then looked for more. This time, she got the shock of her life as one of them had gotten behind her and Eaglle and had her directly in its crosshairs. As the shot was fired, she instinctively banked the fighter to starboard, the torpedo hitting a stabiliser.

She spun wildly out of control, and immediately cross-patched the right servo with the left one in order to stabilise the craft. As she leveled out, she said: "Damn! I should be more careful whom I leave get behind me! Got a little cooked, but I'm ok. Anyone like broiled Falleen?"

Drac kept a light hand on his stick, jumping and juking his Avenger around. His moves showcased the fighter's agility and speed. He couldn't help but smile as the trio mowed down the enemy snubfighters, with three of the eight falling to his guns alone.

As the flight circled back out after killing the last of the snubfighters Eaglle's ship suddenly jerked hard and Drac heard the pilot's strained yelp at the sudden impact. He'd been fired on by the transport, whose shots had taken down his shields and left black scorch marks on the left side of his cockpit. Drac thumbed the comm switch again, "Tighten it up, Blacks. The freighter's guns have a hard time hitting us, but they hurt when they do.

The other pilots acknowledged his order and got into position on his flanks. As they banked back toward the larger ship, all three began dancing their fighters to confuse the freighter's targeting. When they closed to a klick and a half the Mon Cal switched over to proton torpedoes again and instantly got a lock tone on the freighter, "Blacks, key your torpedos to targeting frequency 749 and prepare to fire on my mark."

The Petty Officer listened until both pilots confirmed his command, then turned his attention back to the freighter. He quickly swung the targeting reticule over the ship, settling it on a spot just aft of the bridge on the starboard side of the ship. He waited a beat, then apoke again, "Get ready...Mark."

Three proton torpedos flashed out toward the freighter, slamming into its shields and detonating in a brilliant ball of fire. The ship's shields flared for a moment under the stress, then gave out. When the explosion cleared the Nazgul pilots could see a hole in the hull of the freighter, about a meter by a meter in size, with flickering flames dying out as the oxygen depleted. Molten metal from the hull froze into perfect spheres or trailed out behind the ship as the cold of space froze it again, "Good shot, Blacks. One more should do it."

The freighter rolled over, presenting its other side to the Avengers, along with its intact port shields. Again Drac targeted the ship, this time aiming directly at the bridge, "On my mark...mark."

A second salvo of torpedos shot out at the stricken ship, crashing into the forward deflector shields. As weakened as they already were, the shields gave out more quickly than before. Dying as soon as they did, they allowed the last torpedo to impact unmolested. It slammed into the bridge viewport, bored through it, and hit the bulkhead at the back of the bridge before exploding. The ship's hard lines softened around the bridge as the expanding fireball inside metled and warped the durasteel. Finally the much-abused hull plates could take it no longer and the bridge blew out in a satisfying spectacle.

The freighter immediately stopped firing as escape pods jettisoned from the doomed vessel. A moment later it went completely dark, threat index zero. The Black Flight flyers cheered their victory, then the simulators went black.

-----

Twenty seconds later their viewscreens lit up again, showing an asteroid belt. Drac chimed in on the comm, "Okay, Blacks. This one's a little tougher. It's based loosely on the squadron's last mission, to an asteroid belt in the Anoat system. The New Republic was involved, and reports say that a Rebel force of unknown strength has moved into the system since the destruction of the asteroid base. We're to find them and kill them if possible. If not, we're to do our best to escape with the proper information. Understood?"

"As ordered, sir."

"Got it, Nine."

"Good deal. They should be somewhere in the belt ahead of us, so let's find them. Move out, Blacks."

Qayla remembered the last asteroid belt she had had to navigate, and it wasn't exactly the most fun she had ever had. Depending on how much space you had to work with, one wrong move and you were in serious trouble, to say the very least. Putting her instrumentation on wide scan mode, she cautiously entered the asteroid field.

Just like the last asteroid field she'd encountered, the asteroids were of various sizes. Most of them were too small to be of any trouble, but there were a few that were big enough to hide a waiting attack force. That made the Falleen uneasy as she realised that Eaglle didn't have the same level of expertise that she had had when entering the Vast Empire's Academy. She had come in with a little bit of experience already under her belt owing to the time she had spent onboard a Corellian Freighter.

She was jolted back to reality when her instrumentation started to light up and flash wildly. "Black Lead, this is ten. We've got a magnetic field ahead of us, and from what I know, asteroids don't make that strong of a field. Assessment: Enemy ahead. Putting shields on full as a precaution. Ten out."

=== Right before the freighter attacked ===

Eaglle was really enjoying himself as the last of the fighters were shot down. He had gotten a few of them himself, as was starting to get a little confident, when his shipped jerked, a siren started wailing, and his shield indicator LED's all turned off. He couldn't help but yell from the impact, and could see the left side of his fighter was blackened. That was way way to close, he thought to himself as he straitened out his fighter to Drac's orders, then started dancing around as a few shot were still coming in too close for comfort.

He was waiting for the order to target the freighter to get revenge for the damage he had taken. As soon as the frequency was given, he changed to it, and responded, "All set, Nine."

"Get ready... Mark," Drac said, and Eaglle fired his torpedo. He was pleased to see the damaged done to the freighter, getting his revenge for the damage done to his fighter. "On my mark... mark" Drac said again, and Eaglle fired his torps again, and someone's torp, he couldn't tell whom, slammed into the bridge, and then the bridge detonated in an impressive fireball. As the escape pods ejected, Eaglle was considering hunting them down, but then as he was yelling out his victories, the simulator went black, and eaglle realized that he had gotten so into it tha he had forgotten it was a Sim. Well that was fun... I wonder if Slasher is doing any better, he thought, and then the sim lighted up again.

hmm... an asteroid belt... I don't have much experience fighting in these... this ought to be interesting.... Oh, and it seems that just to make it more interesting, we dont have full info on the enemy this time... great, he thought as Drac relayed the sim info to them.

Eaglle decided to just stick in formation till the enemy sighted them, and to try and stay away from flying to close to the 'roids. All of a sudden, Eaglle instrument panel lit up, and he heard Qayla say, "Black Lead, this is ten. We've got a magnetic field ahead of us, and from what I know, asteroids don't make that strong of a field. Assessment: Enemy ahead. Putting shields on full as a precaution. Ten out"

Eaglle reached down to crank up his shields, then realized that they were already on max. He had subconsciously turned them up when he was thinking about flying close to the asteroids.

The 3 Avengers dropped down underneath the asteroid to try and sneak attack the force, staying close, preparing to engage whatever was awaiting on the other side. Eaglle flicked on his torps, and got his hands ready to fire, then realized he was shaking a little. I hate not knowing what the enemy is, he thought.

Whoops. Knew I forgot to add something in there.

WL: Let's try to get your word counts up into the 500s range, please. You're good at writing in some details, so I'm confident you can handle it easily.

Both: One thing I need to mention is that during dogfights the standard operating procedure is that one enemy snubfighter dies per post. That can be you writing about you shooting one down, or you writing about another member of the squadron scoring a kill. Doing this helps flesh out the battle.

Also: At some point I'm going to throw overwhelming numbers at us. When I do, get some practice at writing in different types of damage. And since it's a sim, your character can learn a lot from being shot down too.

As the flight headed into the asteroid field Drac suppressed an involuntary shudder. The sim was accurate about the location, and remembering the asteroid that'd nearly vaped him last time was not an extremely pleasant experience. He watched eaglle dodge around an asteroid, then flinched as the pilot let out a whoop over the comm unit, "Let's cut down on the chatter, Blacks. If you have to make a personal comment, do it off the air. The frequency needs to stay clear for tactical information."

The pilots weaved in and out between the huge rocks, nimbly dodging the dangerous obstacles. Then something lit up the scopes ahead of the flight and Qayla's voice came over the comm channel, "Black Lead, this is ten. We've got a magnetic field ahead of us, and from what I know, asteroids don't make that strong of a field. Assessment: Enemy ahead. Putting shields on full as a precaution. Ten out."

"Agreed, Ten. All Blacks: Shields up. Set your lasers to quad-fire. This is going to be a twisty/turny fight, so when you do get shots they need to have maximum punch behind them. Don't use torps unless you can guarantee you won't blow an asteroid and fill us all up with shrapnel."

The Avengers closed on the anomalous reading, spread out so they wouldn't slam into each other during evasive maneuvers. When they entered range to get more detailed sensor data Qayla made a confused sound, "Leader, Ten. My scanners show that field to be coming from that big asteroid ahead of us. What's going on?"

Eaglle piped up, "You'd think they'd put a new base in there, but the asteroid's spinning too fast for that. I don't get it either."

"I'm not sure. I never got a chance to go over this sim's overview, since they just finished making it. But I'm thinking that's a..." Drac's scanner started beeping an alarm as six new blips registered on it. "...distraction! We've got enemy fighters in pairs at our one, five, and nine o'clock positions." Tilting his ship, he swung around the large asteroid and got a visual scan on the enemy, "Looks like X-Wings. On me, Blacks. Let's take the group at our one o'clock first, then deal with the rest."

Pushing his throttle forward, Drac accelerated toward the oncoming X-wings. He centered the reticule on the lefthand ship, waited a beat for a lock, then shot three bursts at the enemy ship before they passsed each other. The X-wing fired too, prompting a warning tone to sound in the Mon Cal's cockpit as his forward shields dropped to 33%.

Wheeling around to face the enemy again, the Petty Officer found that his own shots had been more productive than the Rebel fighter's. The first two volleys of four shots had taken down its shields, leaving the last volley to core out the cockpit of the fighter. The enemy pilot had vaporized and his cockpit was a blackened hole in the fighter as it went ballistic and slammed head on into an asteroid. It detonated, along with its proton torpedos, blasting the rock apart as well. Well, that went well. Now to deal with the rest...

=== Right before enemy fighter attack ===

Eaglle was very confused... He was expecting the enemy force to be right behind the asteroid, but nothing seemed to be there. Just an Asteroid spinning very quickly. "You'd think they'd put a new base in there, but the asteroid's spinning too fast for that. I don't get it either." He added on the the current conversation.

Wait a sec... Drac never went over the sim overview... that could be a problem he thought. All of a sudden, his sensors started beeping, and he almost jumped out of the cockpit for his nerves. He saw Drac zooming around an asteroid, and then looked down at his scanner. Oops... six fighter huh? he thought to himself as he turned around the asteroid behind Drac, with Qayla just behind him this time. Just as he accelerated around, he saw Drac's ship jerk as fire hit him, then saw an asteroid explode.

so much for not blowing up asteroids eaglle chuckled, making sure his com was not receiving the message. Just then, the second fighter in that pair started descending on Drac's stricken fighter, and he turned up to stop it, firing before he had a lock. Naturally, it missed completely, but it did it's job. The X-wing pulled up to see who it was shooting at, then turned toward Eaglle's Avenger.

Just as the fighter pulled close, Eaglle inversed his planed, pulled back on the stick, and did a 3/4 loop, so that he was pointing right underneath the fighter, then fired a quick burst. He could see from his sensors that it was just enough to bring down the shields, but before Eaglle could fire another burst, it also dove down, and as the Avenger tried to compensate, it overshot the X-wing, and Eaglle shuddered as he could see his shields drop to 25%. Eaglle turned to the left, just getting inside of the X-Wing, then quickly rolled to the right, and then mid-roll reversed the turn direction on the stick, and cut throttle, so he was able to line up right behind the enemy Fighter.

Bye, bye, sucker, he thought as he fired another quick burst, getting a satisfying explosion from the ship, then broke down, and accelerated again to realign himself with the other Black's. Just then, his fighter shuddered as the debris from an exploding asteroid collided with his ship, and his shields dropped to 20%.

So that's why Drac and Qayla hate asteroids... he thought as he exited the debris field, falling behind Qayla this time.

OOC:

word count: 426... ARG why does 500 seem like a ton of words to do...

1 fighter this time.
