Grahim was with RB and Karash when RB saw a new guy.

“Whose the new fish?” RB asked

“He is Beta40 didn’t you see him when we geared up?” Jae said.

“No” RB and Karash said at the same time. Grahim didn’t even care what happend he was dug down in his own thoughts. “Thisa could be mesa burning down una forest on Naboo” Grahim said to himself as he pressed the trigger and started to burn down the forest. Grahim saw that Hav, Jae and Rae was also flaming the bushes but a little bit further down the road. Grahim saw the fire make everything to ash. Grahim had seen areas like these but then it was mother nature that had made them and a few years after the fire made all bushes to ash it was flourishing with life in those areas. So Grahim kept burn down the forest because he hoped it would grow back. Grahim was bored so he flamed a hole in a tree. What he hadn’t counted on was that the sap was easy ignited so the tree exploded but it didn’t damage Grahim. Except of the shock when a tree explodes in your face.

“Oi. Gungan punk, take it easy. We don’t want you to kill us you should kill enemies or trees not your companions” Beta40 said.

“Mesa has una name, itsa Grahim” Grahim said and started to flame the forest again. Grahim thought he saw something further in the forest. Grahim heard Rae scream and some blaster shots being fired.

Karash hurried over to Rogue, as the squad’s only medic it was his duty to attempt to bring a soldier into fighting condition and when that was not possible either to call a med evac or to load the soldier up with enough drugs that he never opens his eyes again. RB knew his injury could not be that serious; shortness of breath, pain in the abdomen short of those two there were no other symptoms.

“What happened to you?” Karash asked as he pulled off his medpack and began opening it.

“Bastard pierced my tank sent me flying into a rock, a couple of aches and pains nothing serious just need to catch my breath.” Rogue wheezed.

“Well when we get back to base I recommend you get a scan, never know if you broke a rib or something like that last thing you want is for that to pierce a lung and then...” Rogue’s signalled for Karash to shut up.

“Don’t paint me any lovely pictures, I don’t feel like taking an eternal nap just yet.” The platoon sergeant said as he forced a grin to lighten up his features.

Karash chuckled as one of the recruit’s voices came over the coms. “What are we standing around here for? Shouldn’t we be chasing that bastard? Let’s get some!” The exuberant youth said.

“Negative soldier, for all we know those three were supposed to skirmish with us and then retreat leading us into a trap. We’re here to finish our objectives and that’s to reduce this forest into ash.” Ron said before continuing. “What are you guys standing around for? Burn this shit down.”

Activating his com Rogue opened up a private channel with Ron. “Oi! Bossman I got a problem, my tank’s pierced in two places which makes it useless as all hell what would you have me do?”

“Just keep an eye on the woods, I don’t want them getting the drop on us again, there were three of them this time and we’re lucky we’re able to walk as if nothing happened, next time we won’t be so lucky. I’m going to request an airstrike to help us with the burning.” Ron said as he switched frequencies.

Rogue switched his frequency to the general army channel and listened in. “This is senior sergeant Ron, squad leader of Raiders. I am requesting a bombing run be made on co-ordinates Charlie three-Delta three. Over.” Ron said.

“Senior sergeant Ron that request is denied, we have stopped all bombing runs due to increased anti-air fire, the risk of casualties is too great, Over.” The nameless female voice said.

“What about the risk to my men? We just got ambushed for Palpatine’s sake!” A frustrated Ron yelled into the coms.

“That’s a negative, sorry but the orders came up from above.” The answer left Ron cursing everything under and above the sun.

There was a slight buzz in Rogue’s helmet as the comlink notified him that someone wanted to open a private com with him. Opening it soon revealed that it was Ron. “The airstrike was denied, RB I want you to watch our backs while we finish off this forest it shouldn’t take too much longer.”

Karash fired a few shots into the direction that the barbarian was running but none seemed to hit their target; the rest of the squad seemed to stand for a moment or two in shock of what had just happened. They had been caught off guard by another ambush by those giant freaks but luckily this time no one had been hurt or at least not seriously.

“Karash go take a look at him.” The Raiders SL said with reference to Platoon Sergeant Rogueboy who was leaning against a rock.

“What happened to you?” Karash gave the look all medics gave when enquiring what was wrong.

“Bastard pierced my tank sent me flying into a rock, a couple of aches and pains nothing serious just need to catch my breath.” Rogue wheezed slightly as he spoke.

“Well when we get back to base I recommend you get a scan, never know if you broke a rib or something like that last thing you want is for that to pierce a lung and then...” Karash was ready to go into full blown mortality explanation but Rogue stopped him in mid conversation.

“Don’t paint me any lovely pictures, I don’t feel like taking an eternal nap just yet.” RB said.

Karash gave a forced chuckle before whispering sarcastically “Why listen to me, I’m just a medic?”

There were voices going over the com link but Karash wasn’t really listening but got the occasional word, it seemed that someone wanted to follow the beast back into the forest. It was not really a good idea to walk into the enemies’ territory and this was reciprocated by what the Raiders SL was saying.

“You okay?” Karash asked Grahim.

“Mesa is ok. But mesas don’t like burning thesa forest because itsa look like Naboo.” The Gungan said looking down hearted.

“Grahim think of the enemy rather than the forest itself, if that doesn’t help… well just get on with it.” Karash said, the Gungan.

Ron was requesting help from the navy to burn the forest but the request was denied due to “too many casualties”. Karash could not but laugh at this because for once there seemed to be someone more pompous than himself, they were in great metal cases and still they wouldn’t help.

“The air strike was denied, RB I want you to watch our backs while we finish off this forest it shouldn’t take too much longer.” Ron ordered, visibly still annoyed with the woman who had just rejected his request.

As the squad began to burn away the forest for a second time Karash hoped that there would not be any more of those giant men coming from within it. As the flames turned everything to ash and then the ash blew into the wind, for once, the only sound was that of the flames and not of pain.

The squad had stopped firing blindly, and instead took a quick aim at the shadows and then opened up. They were draining clips fast. Slapping in a fresh one Joamer mumbled to himself, if they did not hit the edge of the forest soon they would never leave this place.

Suddenly a shadow reared up behind him, he noticed it a second to late, he went calm at the last instant, and instead of feeling the sharp edge of a huge axe slicing into his back he heard a dull thud as the barbarian slumped to the floor. Two blaster marks converged in the center of the creatures back, looking up he noticed a small opening in the tree tops, and off into the distance he saw the cliff face. Wanting to wave and shout thanks, he only turned around and ran again.

"Well, at least two of them can shoot." Anival said, they were all breathing hard now. A klick appeared to double in distance when you were running through a forest. The squad stopped almost at the same instant, they all opened fire on a barbarian who had just lept over a waist high bush. The combined power of the bolts threw the beast backwards into a tree. When the squad stopped firing, about three seconds later, the thing did not stand up.

"One down, a lot more to go." Helena said. The squad nodded and ran on.

No one spoke for a few minutes, only continued to fire and hope. They all looked ahead to any sign of the forest edge. They knew they had minutes remaining, already the creatures had closed the distance between them. You could see them now, they were no longer shadows. Another fifty feet and they would simply converge on the squad. Joamer wondered if it would be quick, he very much doubted it.

"So.." RK paused to take another breath. "Are we there yet?"

No one answered, only watched the distance separating the two forces shrink foot by foot. Suddenly the roars stopped, and the sound of pursuit ended. They emerged suddenly into bright sunlight, they kept running thirty yards and turned around. The forest seemed quiet and peaceful, the distant sounds of flamethrowers could be heard.

The only sounds the squad made was heavy breathing, for a long minute they let themselves begin to think they had made it. Until an ear piercing roar was heard, all around them it echoed in the valley. The forest seemed to come alive as barbarians poured out of it.

They did not take the time to count, only to turn and run. The sound of thuds filled the air as the snipers tried to keep up with the army emerging from the forest.

"I thought that if we made it into the open we would be free?" Anival half shouted.

"It was a safe assumption at the time. Looks like we hit a nerve." Joamer said, his breathing had become labored, the whole squad was near collapse, but the thought of death kept them moving.

"Let us hope our friends up there do not run out of ammo." Void said.

The squad only nodded, no one bothered to shoot behind them. There only thought was to run, and when they could not do that anymore, run faster.

Anival was frustrated and tired, not only that, he couldn’t remember the last time a meal was had.
The squad kept running and running, Anival suddenly became aware of the pain on his side, he figured it was from all the running.

“I don’t think I can keep this up” Anival said through gritted teeth. Anival felt something warm run down his side and legs.

Anival took out a grenade and let it fall as they ran, there was an explosion and some screams.
Anival was getting dizzier and dizzier by the minute.

Anival tripped, and rolled to a stop, he didn’t have the strength to stand up, but the will to live made him stand. A roar to the left as a huge figure came towards him, Anival raised hisE-11 just in time to block the axe, there was a crunch and his blaster was torn in two, the axe clipped Anival’s side, not do any real damage.

The squad opened fire, Anival was relieved they had come back for him, or just stopped and shot the creature, it all happened so fast, that when it was over Anival just stood their feeling like the dead.

Joamer dragged Anival to his feet.

“We have to keep moving.” he said, Anival barely heard him.

All he could think about right now was going to sleep, Joamer took off Anival’s helmet, and gave it to him, then looked into his eyes.

“WE HAVE TO KEEP GOING!” He barked.

Anival head him, and put his helmet back on, then he willed his feet to move, they did.

Slowly but surely the squad gained speed again, Anival felt like a nuisance, he had slowed them down, and the roars wouldn’t go away.

Joamer kept an eye on Anival.

“I think your hurt.” he stated.

“I think were all dead.” Anival replied morosely.

The thud of his boots was all Anival could think about, and that put him into a trance.

Thud.

He didn’t feel the pain in his side anymore.

Thud.

He wasn’t there running. He was in a nice cozy bunk.

Thud.

Anival snapped out of it as a metallic bolt flew near his helmets, leaving a scratch, that got his heart pumping and his body full on adrenaline.

Running faster was the only thing on wraith mind.
“I hope we make it out alive, if we do, Kand you owe us all drinks, and maybe a meal or too.”

Anival heard the agreement, but it didn’t matter, Anival didn’t think any of them would be going back home, and that was his way of saying goodbye to the squad.

Anival continued to force his body to go faster, but his will was leaving slowly, and all the energy was gone, all that was left was the raw adrenaline, and even that too was leaving.

Anival fell into the trance again, thud, thud, thud.

Running as fast as he could, Void was thinking back to his childhood with the thieves on CorelliaThis is nothing compared my nights of thievery on Corellia! He shoots an enemy as he pops up out of the bushes. "Not gonna be that easy!" He said as he ran some more, when suddenly he came up on a group of the enemy forces. He slowed down as he got closer, he activated and rolled a grenade amongst them.

They didn't notice it until it was too late. He collected anything useful from their corpses and continued running towards his goal. "I wonder where RK is?" Void asked himself as he ran. He continued to run as he thought about his friends. Hoping they were allright. As he was thinking, he nearly ran into RK. "Where the Hell have you been?" RK asked. "I got separated from ya'll. where are the others?" RK responded, " just over this rise!"  They ran and caught up with the others.  "What how Kand?" Void asked.

“Grahim think of the enemy rather than the forest itself, if that doesn’t help… well just get on with it.” Karash said, the Gungan.

“Hata hata, wesa going to flame some of disa barbarians” Grahim said and started to burn down the forest. Grahim, Beta and RB was taking one part of the forest while Hav, Rae and Ron was burning from the other side so if there were any more barbarians they couldn’t flee out of the wood. Jae, Beretz and Karash took another side. Grahim saw half the squad start spewing flames at one of the barbarians, Rogue, Beta and Grahim looked at each other before joining in. Rogueboy was a head of Beta and Grahim when a jumping barbarian landed behind RB, the barbarian took a swing with his large axe in an attempt to decapitate Rogue. Luckily for Rogue the slash hit the three canisters on Rogue's back sending the trooper forward. Rogue appeared to not be hurt however the barbarian was drenched in the tank's napalm Beta fired an E-11 shot on the barbarian, sadly for the barbarian Beta hit the arm and not a vital point so the barbarian was put on fire instead of killed direktly. RB had flown about 5 meters and landed on his stomach.

“Yousa should be glad yousa didn’t had thatsa on yousas back” Grahim said when RB looked were his flamethrower went away. They heard a explotion in the forest.

“There must have been some napalm left in the two side containers” Beta said. Grahim, RB and Beta started to laugh at the incident.

“But those bastards destroyed my flamethrower. I have an idea. Okay guys, I will watch your back and you keep flame the forest. Does that sound like a good deal to you?” Rogue said. Beta and Grahim noded and then starrted to flame the forest again.

“I think they should have brought beer when they put us on a BBQ mission” RB said.

“Yes a beer would be good right now” Beta said and burned down a couple of trees. Grahim and Beta heard that the others were getting closer.

“Theysa isa probably una klick away” Grahim said.

“Nah I think more like one and a half klick away” Beta said.

“Wesa will see if wesa burn down the forest isn’t thatsa right?” Grahim said.

“You are right, Grahim” RB said.

“Isa yousa noticing anyting weird?” Grahim said.

“Not yet I only see… lets see. Yes now I know a forest lower to the ground because of flames.” RB said with a ironic tone. Grahim and Beta kept on the flaming. Grahim started to see Karash between the trees.

“Hey Karash how is it going?” RB said.

“It is going fine we haven’t encountered any barbarians at all, what happened to your flamethrower?” Karash asked.

“It was destroyed by one of these barbarians it saved my life actualy. But you guys should keep on being hot” RB said. Grahim started to laugh silent for himself as he turned more wood to ash. Grahim saw Jae and Beretz now too. Now they just needed to find Ron, Hav and Rae then the squad would be gathered.

“Are you sure you are okay, Grahim? You aren’t worying for the forest still, right?” Karash asked.

“Yesa mesa isa fine, mesa know thisa forest will be back in about tenska years or so” Grahim said and looked at the forest with a smile “And mesa have to kill deysa barbarians thatsa isa delaying wesa.” Grahim didn’t like war to much he did like small squad missions better because they weren’t killing in such a large scale, Kalee had almost turned out in war. But wesa managed to escape. Grahim thought.

“I am starting to see a field on the other side of the trees, or rather a ash covered field” Karash said. Grahim was eager to have this objective done so they could move on. The tree that Karash just had lit on fire exploded it was aparently another one of those trees with easy ignited sap. Karash wasn’t prepared for it either because he jumped back almost a meter.

“We should take it easy with these exploding trees.” Karash said, everyone started to laugh.

“Its only this little piece of the wood left to burn, so come on now we need to get it done."Jae said.

Everyone pulled the trigger to their flamethrowers. They all flamed the last bit of the forest. They saw that there were coming flames from the other side and understood that Ron, Hav and Rae was here to.

“That took some time to complete.” Ron said.

“Yeah it did.” RB and Jae said at the same time.

“Lets head back for the vehicles.” Ron said. Everyone started to move towards the vehicles.

“Mesa want some rain, mesa isa dry.” Grahim said.

“I still want a cold beer.” RB said.

Painfully, slowly, the screams of their enemies died upon the subsiding wind.  The flamethrowers had made short work on the forest and surrounding countryside, turning everything that was combustible into ash and smoke.  What remained was a graveyard of trees, only the hard centers of stumps remained; projecting out of the ground like jagged, pointed teeth.  The thought of teeth, of further symbols of death, didn't help to calm the squad's nerves.

Ron found it impossible to walk without making some kind of noise, wherever he walked the charred ash below his feet was crushed into oblivion, sending ash and dust up into the air, and then spilling back to the ground.  He looked around at the carnage and death around them, at the burnt trees and dead, charred bodies of the ambush party that had nearly caught them unawares.  There was nothing to be heard, and this time the silence was expected.  It was the sound of death.

Ron turned back to his squad while slowly removing his helmet and flamethrower equipment from his back.  He was sore, tired, and emotionally drained; but as Squad Leader he knew his duty was to make sure that these men, his troopers, were well and able to move on should a call come in from Arnaut or Kanderin.

"StarFruit, Havock, Rogueboy." Ron said.  The three came promptly, some sooner than others as made obvious by some form of limping or sore movement.  Those who Ron had not called directly hung about ten feet or so from the small group, anxious not to be caught too far away from them in case of another ambush.

"Your thoughts on the situation." Ron said, in answer to StarFruit's salutation.  Ron knew the possibilities of further ambushes existed, but distrusted his own exhausted mind to examine the situation fully.  Perhaps his senior troopers had thoughts of their own, a chance to shine even.  Yes, that's what ambitious troopers like, a chance to prove themselves.

Rogueboy spoke first.  "There's no tellin' how many more of those freaks are still out there.  They've outsmarted us once, and I'm sure they could do it again.." he winced with pain for a moment before continuing.  "If you ask me, we need some more help to clear this place out.  We need air support."

The others nodded in agreement.  Ron shrugged and replied,  "It's probably the most effective way to go about it, and the simplest, but as I'm sure you've heard; we're not getting any more help than we already got."  here Ron hefted the flamethrower equipment that the rest of them had received as well.  Havock spoke next.

"That's the problem though, chief: we won't be able to burn for much longer- another hour or so of burning and we'll be out of fuel."  Ron grabbed the tanks to his own flamethrower to check its levels, but the action proved to be useless as he soon discovered.  Havock was correct.  If they were going to get any more use out of these flamethrowers, they'd have to do it in the next few hours.

Ron placed it down slowly, collecting his thoughts as he did so.  "As far as I know, we've completed our objective.  We've burned down the forest, and flushed out those who opposed us.  All we can do is wait and see if there are any more; and if there are, its up to us to stop them and hold the position until the rest of platoon gets here.

"Sounds good, Boss." Jaenna said.  "We can hold em."

The others nodded in agreement.  Satisfied with this, Ron called the other troopers over.

"Karash, Grahim, Raelene, Beta, Beretz!"  They came quickly, eager to hear what the plans for the future was, and how they would effect them.  Ron motioned to them to come closer in; and then prepared himself for what he had to say.  It was important that they were confident and ready for what lay ahead of them, and it was up to Ron to make get them to that point.

"You all know why we have been given this task." Ron started.  "It's because you are the fastest, the strongest, the smartest.  It's because they needed someone to get the job done, and you are the ones who can do it the best.  Because in the darkest hour of the darkest night, when all around you there are burning carcasses of friends and foes- you have the courage, and the ability to continue.  I know you would all fight to hell and back to see each other alive; I know you'd do it for the empire as well."

Ron looked around to make sure he had them, and from their looks he knew they were ready for the climax of his speech.  Ron searched his thoughts for the words of great men that he had heard.  Surely words of some kind of similar quality would give them courage and hope as well.

"But today, RAIDERS," Ron began again.  "Today we may not come out alive again.  We must stay here, in this graveyard of a forest, a graveyard that we made by our own power; and we have to defend it." Ron pointed into the charred woods to emphasize his next point.  "There were many, many men, women, and children who died in that forest!  We took out entire villages, homes, gardens, crops, killed their livestock, and animals as well.  Do you think they will just give up?  Would you?  I don't think so."  Ron shook his head with those words.  It was s depressing situation that they were in.  With the possibility of another ambush, and no way of knowing when the rest of the platoon would get there; the only way to hold the dead forest was to make sure that every trooper was fighting with everything they had.

"And so for the next few days and nights, you must all fight for the same reason.  We aren't fighting for each other, we're not fighting for the empire."  Ron paused for a moment.  "We're fighting to show these bastards that we have the power to give them life.. or death, and that if they choose to continue fighting we will send every single one of them to the fiery death that they have asked for.  RAIDERS, we fight simply because we have to."

OOC:
The origional RAIDERS objectives have been completed.  Further RAIDERS posting should be about short skirmashes and brief battles to hold our position until the other squads are ready to join us again.

Joamer did not remember pain, or exhaustion, the last hour, or day, or year, it was all a blur. He did not remember the planets name, and he was beginning to forget his own. They ran on, the single klick to the forest edge had turned into a cross country run, he stopped counting after six kilometers, his body was moments from dropping. He had to shout at Anival to get him on his feet again.

By some luck, or curse they had gained a short lead on the barbarians, they might be huge beasts, but they had limits. He wondered which groups limits would be reached first, the snipers had kept firing, but the things kept coming.

Joamer knew, he would not last one more kilometer. His legs were iron bars, his chest was a roaring fire, and his heart was thudding its last beats. He had ran out of ammo sometime back, half of the squad had stopped firing, from the looks on their faces they had run out as well.

"I see.." The voice was so weak, he had to think who had said it. The name did not come to him.

"I see something, up ahead. It looks like a.. " Helena said softly.

The squad, panting, made it over a hill and almost stopped. Everyone of them sucked in a sudden breath of air at the scene before them.

Arranged in front of them was the remains of Dagger Battalion. Somehow they had gotten in front of the squad, and set up a ambush. Seeing hundreds of soldiers pointing blasters at them made the Wraiths happier then they had ever been. Throwing themselves down the hill they rolled down the side to come to a sudden stop when they reached the bottom. To tired to move or care what happened, they all stayed where they had stopped. Joamer could not even move his arms to activate the wrist blasters hidden in his cybernetic arms, he was simply too exhausted.

Moments later the first barbarian crested the hill, instantly the sound of hundreds of blasters echoed in the air. His body went flying with the force of impact, three more made it over the hill before they were torn apart. A rough guttural cry filled the air.

For some reason Joamer thought it meant retreat, no other creatures came over the hill, and soon the valley was silent. The rough breathing and hacking coughs sounded around him. He thought he saw the soldiers running toward them, he was not sure. Exhaustion had won out, and darkness closed in around him.

The last thing Joamer saw, as he lost conscience was Anival laughing, he would have to remember to ask what could possibly be funny.

I’ll run till that tree up ahead, though Anival forcing himself to move on, making promises to himself, many of which he knew he wouldn’t keep.

Finally they made it to a clearing, Anival saw the sight, and felt like stopping, but he knew if he did, he wouldn’t start again, his momentum carried him down the hill.

Rolling down, Anival heard the sound of armor rattling on the floor, and crunches as they rolled over gravel, dust and rocks.

Coming to a stop Anival looked around, everything was blurry,  he couldn’t even tell if any of the squad had made it down the hill. He was to tire to care.

Anival summoned the last of his energy to take of his helmet yet again, the fresh air was welcomed, and it gave his face a better view, all the squad had made it.

He lay back down, savoring the end of their run through hell.

His lung burned, an icy burn. His eyes were dried. His body numb. His brain shut down.

“Wake up!”  It was a medic, Anival hadn’t even realized he had fallen asleep, he smiled at the medic.

Around him, there were others checking the squad, Anival tried to sit up but his side still hurt, a medic inspect him.

“You are alright, except maybe for a few bruised ribs, and a small abrasion, nothing a little bacta, and some rest won’t cure. You’re lucky you weren’t injured badly. So are the rest of your teammates.”

Anival smiled.

“Not luck.” managed Anival, the medic gave him a quizzical look.

“Years of honed skill.” Anival laughed. Anival looked at the sky, time had barely passed, Anival saw that most of the squad was taken on stretcher to their tents, to tired to walk.

Anival stared at the medic, and closed his eyes.

“You want a stretcher too?”

Anival thought about it, his pride would not allow it, but he didn’t have the energy to stand up, let alone walk.

“Just….don’t…tell….anyone….or else……..” was all Anival said before he fell back into oblivion, and darkness enveloped him.

Havock sat with her back against what was left of a tree. She had her helmet off, her eyes closed as she rested her head against the blackened bark. Today had been a busy day for the young trooper. They had managed to finished their objective and survive an ambush. Something told Havock the barbarians were not finished with the RAIDERS just yet.

Taking a deep breath she lifted her head to look around the area. The squad had spread out, but nobody was moving out of sight.

Havock rested her arm on her bent knee. Her shoulder still hurt from being thrown when the barbarian came up from the ground under her feet. At least she got one of them back. Havock smirked thinking about that.

Havock watched as Grahim walked up next to were Hav was sitting. He knelt down and touched a small weed...or possibly a single blade of grass...it was hard for Havock to tell. She looked at him, tired and throughly confused at what was so intriguing.

Her hand rubbed her eye, then ran through her hair. Hav breathed in through her nose and sat up straighter, turning towards the gungan. “Hi Grahim, something wrong?”

“The forestsa going to besa fine, methinks.” He was wistful, almost distracted as he continued to kneel by the small green sprout amidst all the ashes.

Havock snorted, “well yeah, I guess.” She shrugged, her hair falling over her eyes which prompted her to brush the brown strands back behind her ears.

Grahim finally tore his eyes away from the streak of green, turning his head to look at Havock. Then he squinted, “yousa hair down. Mesa never seen yousa hair down.”

“Really?” Havock looked at Grahim, her eyes were only half open. The girl was tired after this crazy day and it was becoming increasingly more difficult for her to stay awake. “Grahim, I need to take a walk. If I stay here I'm going to fall asleep for sure.”

She could hear Grahim say, “okeyday.” As she walked away from the tree. She forgot to put her helmet back on, but it was only a short walk around the area they were already in. Hav looked around at the rest of the squad, everyone was busy with some task. A few were talking, others were cleaning their weapons, she walked passed Ron who was looking at something on his datapad.

“Where you going, Havock?” Hav turned back towards her squad leader.

Taking the opportunity while she was stopped, Havock reached retrieved her hair tie and put her hair back before speaking. “Sir, just had to get up and walk around a bit. Staying in one place was lulling me to sleep.”

Ron looked past her to the charred forest, the darkness had covered the night which made it difficult to see very far. “Don't go to far Havock. Remember we need to stay close.”

Hav nodded then walked a few feet further into the darkness. Darkness. She wasn't used to it being so dark. If there wasn't still a few fires burning the darkness may have been too much for her. She grew up in a city, it was never dark no matter how late it got. You could walk the streets of Coronet City at any hour and find not only illuminating windows on buildings that reached hundreds of stories into the night sky, but often stores operating their lights as beacons to anyone who may be wandering nearby.

Havock shook her head, she was daydreaming. Wow I must be tired. Okay, maybe I do need to rest for a little while.

Hav turned to face the rest of the squad. Ron looked up, he put away his datapad with one hand, and motioned for Havock to walk over to him with the other. Hav shrugged and took two steps, she could hear the sound before her mind could register its origin or what was happening. One thing was for sure, there was no way Havock would have ever imagined what happened next.

Ron's face fell, he reached for his weapon. Havock frowned, what the hell?

Then she felt a muscular arm wrap around her chest and squeeze on her throat. She could hear the barbarians wet and raspy breath next to her ear. She kicked back, tried to move her arms, but he was too big. Her breathing was becoming ragged and she stopped fighting as she realized it was becoming more and more difficult to suck the air into her lungs. Her eyes closed, she had to focus.

One thought permeated in her brain. I will not die, panicking. Screw that. If I'm going to die I'm going to at least have some honor. She swallowed and almost gagged as her throat was being constricted. Her eyes were rolling back, she would not loose consciousness. She would not make this easy for the bastard.

I have to keep going. Just have to keep moving forward.

Jori had long since felt any pain whatsoever. All he knew at that point was that he had to keep running or he’d die a horrible death, probably by dismemberment which wasn’t good at all. He could hear the panted breaths of his squadmates but he mainly blocked those out. Every time he moved out of the way of a tree, he nearly stumbled and fell over. It took all of his will power just to keep going, and that will power was steadily decreasing. He had almost lost all hope and given up when he noticed a discernable change in the light. Looking upwards, he noticed patches of light penetrating the dense barrier of leaves above him. And with that, he knew they were close. His strength renewed, he pushed forward. Whereas he was running slowly before, he was now literally sprinting. As he dodged yet another tree, he glimpsed an opening ahead.

“We’re almost there!” Jori yelled at the top of his lungs.

A few more steps and he made it. Bursting into the sunshine, he felt immediately better knowing that he was safe, at least for the moment. Looking to his left and right, he noticed every one of his squadmates were right there with him, which made him feel even better knowing that no one had died a gruesome death. They continued to run until they got to the top of a hill. Looking down at the bottom of the hill, Jori realized that what looked to be the Dagger Battalion had set up an ambush for the barbarians.

“Woah…” someone said.

Sharply breathing in, Jori fell over and began rolling down the hill. From what glimpses he saw, he realized that he wasn’t the only one to think of rolling down the hill. As soon as he stopped at the foot of the hill, Jori doubled up, finally feeling the pain that had built up. Clutching his sides, Jori writhed around in agony, wheezing out ragged breaths.Slowly, the pain subsided and finally slipped away. Jori looked up to see a medic standing over him, holding an empty syringe.

"I gave you a dose of painkillers. You should be back to normal shortly." the medic said, standing up.

"Thanks." Jori replied tiredly.

Closing his eyes, Jori breathed in and out for a few moments before gathering his strength. Standing up, he rolled over on his stomach and sat back on his knees. Slowly, he stood up. Breathing a sigh of relief, Jori went to take a step only to stumble as his legs gave way. Hitting the ground hard, his breath whooshed out and the pain returned worse than ever. It was too much for him to handle and dark spots appeared at the edge of his vision and grew rapidly. Then, with a final cry of pain, he blacked out.

Ron saw the barbarian before Havock did.  A large muscular man, covered from head to toe in tattoos and the like grabbed her from behind, and pulled her back towards the rocks from whence it came.  Ron bent down and picked up his E-11 blaster and quickly (yet quietly) chased after the thing.

Although the man was big, he was quick.  His large muscles allowed him to carry Havock over his shoulder as if she was no lighter than a sack of potatoes.  Soon Ron realized he was gaining speed, and sought desperately for a way to catch him before it was too late for Havock.  Ron raised his gun to shoot, but realized the danger of hitting Havock.. it was a bad situation.

After a minute of this, Ron came to a gorge in the woods, a small embankment in the burnt forest where a stream had carved a meandering path.  Ron was careful to walk around some smoldering ashes as he slowly worked his way down the bank.  Some parts of the forest were still burning brightly, casting light upon some areas that Ron had to keep out of to prevent himself from being seen.  Finally reaching the bottom of the embankment, Ron sought for tracks, noises, anything that could lead him to Havock.  It was silent for a while, until Ron heard a stifled scream.  Havock.

Ron rushed down the gorge that the stream had made, carefully making sure not to splash in the water (or what remained of it) so that he would not be noticed.  Fortunately (for Havock as well as Ron), he did not have to go far like this.

The barbarian who had captured Havock had brought her to a large tree that had grown out of the side of the embankment.  Its roots spread up and down the cliff like steps, and it was this that allowed the barbarian to travel up and out of the gorge so easily.  It was also because of this that the barbarian had been saved from the fiery tempest earlier, he had probably hidden himself in the streambed.

Ron had come at not a moment too late.  When they came in sight, Ron threw himself up against the bank, to make sure that he had not been seen.  Havock meanwhile had been thrown up against the bank, near the bottom of the tree where the roots spread out to form a small cave; probably the residential home of the man.  As soon as he let Havock down, she pulled out a blaster pistol from her side and attempted to shoot the man down.  He was too quick for her.  He grabbed her shooting arm, and prepared to twist it back to break it, when suddenly he released her.

The man sneered for a moment, tottered back and forth as if he would fall, and then finally collapsed to the side.  Behind him stood Ron on the other side of the bank with his arm stretched out from the release of his knife, the very knife that was lodged in the back of the man's neck.

"Ron!" Havock said.  She was both pleased and relieved.  No doubt that Ron was the very person she had hoped to see at that moment.

"That was damned close, Havock." Ron said, crossing the stream.  "I told you to stay close!" Ron was concerned and worried; which usually made him to be patronizing.  Fortunately, Havock knew the quirky ways of her Squad Leader, and saw the concern he meant by it.

"You came not a moment too soon." she replied.

"Aye.  And its a good thing too." Ron replied.  "I've just had a call from Jaenna.. she's not sure, but we may have some more company back at the camp."

Ron shoved a blaster into her hands and threw himself up the ladder of roots out of the gorge.  With Havock close behind him, he called down to her to encourage her.

"Come on, Havock!  Quick's the word and sharp's the action.  Goodness knows what awaits us back at camp..."

Rogue was lying on the crisped grass rubbing his stomach where the pain was emanating from thinking that perhaps Karash had been right. Looking up Rogue noticed that Ron was standing before him asking if it was alright if he could take a seat. “Sure.” RB’s overly simple response seemed to surprise himself.

“Did you ever wonder why we are on this planet?” Ron asked.

“You mean in the physical sense? Or the never ending question one?” Rogue responded carefully.

“Better yet, don’t answer that. A question that I would like for you to answer is how do you feel about Jaenna’s promotion to assistant squad leader?” The senior sergeant’s eyes darted to Starfruit when he asked.

“I didn’t know that was SF’s real name.” Rogue said trying to hide his affection for the aforementioned. “I take it your asking if I am insulted as to being passed over?”

Ron nodded signalling that was his intent. “I’m not the least bit offended, Jaenna is a good assistant and would make a good squad leader. She’s very good at making friends, courageous, smart and professional; Jaenna is what this squad needs. Now if you’re referring to her combat record I’m definitely her senior and hopefully will continue to be.” Rogue stated his assessment of Star as professional as he could and hoped that his praise would not be misconstrued.

RB noticed that Ron had a faraway look for a few seconds before standing up and excusing himself. The watching Rogue saw Ron walk towards Hav and the two of them disappeared off into the remaining woods. “Where are those two going?” Jaenna asked.

“Ron said he needed to talk to Hav about something .” Rogue lied, covering up for an obvious sign of affection or at least that’s how RB interpreted it as.

An awkward silence passed between the two troopers which was broken by a loud thunk! As something sharp pierced the ground, Rogue instinctively dove for cover bringing Jaenna down with him. “What the hell are you doing?” The assistant squad leader shrieked loudly.

“What’s everyone’s status?” RB yelled into the comlink.

Surprised looks greeted him as no one had moved a muscle. “Or am I just crazy?” Rogue asked.

“No you’re not.” Jaenna said as she pointed at a javelin that had been shot from the forest. At the haft of the javelin rested a stormtrooper’s helmet.

“I guess there are no hidden meanings in that symbol.” Beta said.

“Quiet you!” Rogue snapped. “You three, cover me while I retrieve the javelin.” The platoon sergeant said as he motioned to Beretz, Beta, and Karash to fan out.

The likelihood of the javelin being a trap was exceptionally high and nothing symbolized that these barbarians were honourable. Carefully RB slung his rifle over his shoulder and approached the helmet, a black liquid slowly seeped out of it. “Rogue, what is it?” An impatient Jaenna asked. Rogueboy raised his arm to silence her.

Seeing nothing to indicate that the helmet was a bomb, and a quick scan of the tree line didn’t show any threats. Lifting the helmet revealed a severed head, not that Rogue expected anything different however he was still unprepared for the smell and sight of the tarred head.

Karash observed the charred remains of a once glorious forest and began to ponder what it had seen and what it had done in the centuries that it must have been here, protecting the enemy. It was quite a humbling thought to realise that around one day ago it gave life to so many and now it lay dead as did anything around or within it, Grahim was still wondering around looking for signs of life and Karash hoped all he would find would be blade of grass or two.

“What the hell are you doing?” The ASL shrieked as Platoon Sergeant Rogueboy pushes her and himself to the ground.

“Whatsa they dosin?” asked Grahim.

However it did not take any further explanation as everyone noticed that a fierce javelin that had punctured the earth and had a storm troopers helmet resting on the end of it. Karash quickly glanced over to the two now getting up off the floor just to make sure no one had been hurt, luckily Rogue had saved them both just in time.

“You three, cover me while I retrieve the javelin.” Rogue said as he motioned to Karash, Beretz and Beta.

“Rogue, what is it?” Jaenna asked with a sense of impatience.

The look on Rogue’s face was a better explanation than any words, “It’s a head.” He said in a matter of fact tone.

Karash moved over too look at the head, it had been covered in a tar like liquid and by the looks of it had been cut clean off and with excellent precision; Karash tried to get away from these thoughts as they were not pleasant. The rest of the squad look equally unnerved at the sight of this but what was really worrying was that it could be Ron or Havock; after all they still weren’t back.

“Is it…?” A familiar voice asked. Karash couldn’t be quite sure who though.

“No definitely not, it looks too old to either be Ron or Havock.” Karash said.

“Everyone keep you eyes open and stay close.” Jaenna ordered.

For the next five minute or so everyone stood in silence with there eyes looking over what would have been the tree line and waiting for anything to come into sight. Nobody knew what it would be but everyone knew that it would be something and they had to be ready for it. A few more minutes passed before the SL and Havock returned.

“What happened?” Asked Jae.

“Havock just got into a bit of trouble but nothing we couldn’t handle.” Replied Ron. “Now what’s been happening here?” he asked in turn.

Rogue pointed in the direction of where the head lay and that same look then grew on Havock and Ron’s face. After a moment or two the SL ordered everyone to keep their eyes open and to make sure that they stayed together.

“You alright?” Karash asked Havock, just to make sure there was nothing that he could do.

“Just a few bruises and nothing more than a pain in the neck.” Havock laughed slightly.

However as Karash was talking he did not noticed the ogre like figure that swung at him, luckily he managed to move so that it just knocked him over rather than to throw him in to the side of a boulder. The rest of the squad instantly opened fire on to the beast but once again any shots that hit arms, legs or torso just seemed to bounce off, Karash himself reached for his rifle before noticing that it had been knocked a few feet away.

“Karash, move!” a familiar voice shouted.

Once again the enemy was looming over him and about to strike down a massive fist on to him that would surely kill him. So Karash closed his eyes and hoped that it would be all over soon, as there wasn’t even any point at firing at pistol at this thing. But the blow never came however there was a large thud as the thing fell to the floor; apparently Grahim’s shot had hit the thing right in the head and killed it instantly.

“Oh great!” Karash said as he sat on the floor. “Not only have I been saved by Havock, now I have to thank the Gungan as well.” Karash hated this thought.

As Karash did get up he could see the figures of some other monstrous being run off back in the direction of what was a forest. The skirmishes were becoming ever more frequent and as the squad were getting more and more tired the enemies attacks seemed to get more and more effective.

It was dark. Havock looked up and she couldn't make out not one star in the sky. The smoke from the smoldering fires was blotting out all manor of celestial illumination. Havock walked over to where Rogueboy was sitting, she couldn't tell if he was awake or not they way he was propped up against a tree looking towards the center of their makeshift camp.

As she passed some of her newer squadmates, she could see the fear in their wide-eyed expressions. These guys had never really seen battle and here they were on some god-forsaken planet with barbarians jumping out of the darkness attacking them.

Finally reaching Rogueboy's location, Havock fell more than sat down on the ground next to him. Pulling her knees up, she rested her elbows and tilted her head to one side. Any other place but here and she would be asleep in ten seconds flat. But not here and not now.

After her way too close encounter with the barbarian, Havock was shaken. The beast grabbed her, dragged her, carried her away. Who knows what he would have done before he killed her, but thanks to Ron she would never have to know. At this point she was quite certain her imagination would do her the favor of filling in the rest of the story without Ron's arrival, just as soon as she closed her eyes to sleep.

“You didn't happen to pick up any beer while you were off with your new boyfriend?”

Havock snapped her head to look at Rogueboy, then grabbed her neck as the pain radiated down  her spine and left a searing pain in the front of her skull. She felt a hand on her shoulder. “Geez Hav, I didn't mean to hurt you. It was just a joke.”

Havock shook her head, softly, as not to damage her neck any further. “No, I'm fine. How are you feeling, you got banged up a lot worse than me.”

It was hard to see Rogueboy's face in the dark, especially now that he was leaning back against the tree again. But he seemed to think about his response very carefully. “I wouldn't be so sure about that. But to answer your question, I'm going to be fine. I've been banged up a whole lot worse than this before.”

It suddenly struck Havock how little she really knew about Rogue. He was a good soldier and always could be counted on, but his past was a complete mystery to her. Just then Jaenna walked up and knelt in front of the two of them.

Hav smirked, “Hey Jae, welcome to the RAIDERS infirmary. Don't eat the food, its awful.” Havock tried to laugh but it sounded more like a cough. When she was able look back up at her Jae had a worried expression as her eyes flicked from Hav to Rogue and back again.

“Why me, why did I have to be best friends with the two most accident prone people in this squad?”

Hav and Rogue exchanged a glance before they turned back to Jae and simultaneously shrugged. Then both of them groaned as pain radiated from the slight movement. Jae just shook her head at the pair.

Havock was about to say something, but the thought died on her tongue. She could hear what sounded like running coming from multiple directions around the camp. “What the frak is that?” Havock grumbled as she looked around.

Havock reached to her side and pulled out her blaster pistol, Jae was still kneeling in front of them, and Rogue had grabbed his blaster rifle and had it across his lap. Then they saw them, barbarians, they were running through the camp at full speed. They didn't bother to stop at all they just took random swings with their spears as they continued at break-neck speed.

Rogue and Havock both started to get up, and help the others taking shots at the stampeding barbarians. Just then one saw the three of them and seemed to pause, he twisted his body and threw his spear right at them.

Rogue and Hav both saw it, and they both saw that Jae didn't. Rogue grabbed Jae's right arm and Hav grabbed her left, throwing her to the ground as they all fell backwards together.

“Gah, what the hell is wrong with you two.” Jae managed as she was face down in the charred forest floor. Then she spun quickly to her back and saw what Rogue and Hav were staring at. The spear was only inches from her feet, the point buried in the ground. All three of them looked up and watched the barbarian...smile...before he continued along the path with his friends.

Sam stood at the edge of camp taking in the landscape. He made mental notes about cleared paths, thickets, and sheered cliff faces. He was preparing himself for the task of scouting a path for the half-tracks to descend the cliff. He was snapped back to reality when a hand settled on his shoulder.

“It’s time. Take Brock with you,” Saphira said with a low tone.

“Right,” Sam said stepping off, “Brock! C’mon kid.”

“Sure thing sir!” Brock answered just barely holding back a squeal of glee.

“Let’s go,” Sam sighed reading his weapon, “Just keep your eyes sharp. Let’s not get any gnarly bolts stuck into us.”

“Make it quick boys. No time to lollygag,” Saphira stated as the two marched off.

Sam kept keen eyes taking notes every step of the way. Large amounts of underbrush here, loose sand there, and noted a few broken branches and crumpled leaves. The latter had nothing to do with finding a negotiable path for the trucks. It was a note about possible barbaric movements.

“Sergeant, snipers have you both covered,” a voice crackled over the com-link.

“Thank you for the heads up,” he replied and stopped dead in his tracks, “Brock hold up.” He pointed off to the distance. There was movement, not much, but a noticeable amount took catch the duo’s notice. The two pulled their weapons ready to fire. They had the higher ground, but that did not mean anything. Their foes knew this area and had to know it pretty well, which negates any advantage that they think that they have.

“This could get bad and fast,” Sam whispered to Brock.

“I know Sergeant. I’ve been around a bit,” Brock whispered with a slight chuckle.

A shot rang out startling both troopers. Without hesitation they both check their flanks with a few short bursts into the trees. If the enemy did not know their location before both troopers were certain that there position was compromised.

“Time to move!” Sam exclaimed. Both keep their eyes as sharp as they could while moving with haste down the path. Sam was still maintaining notes about the environment, yet with slightly less detail.

“Sorry about that sergeant. The snipers saw where you were looking and took the hint,” the same voice crackled in Sam’s helmet.

“You better keep that man’s name to yourself, because if I find out there is going to be a dead sniper! That crap isn’t going to fly,” snapped Sam quickly before flipping off his com-link.

The duo stopped against a large tree. “Give me a few minutes. There is a good view from this point to assess a quality path.” The Zabrak holstered his weapon, then pulling out his binoculars with one swift motion.

Scanning the landscape, Sam noticed that there were a few paths already made. They were by no means distinct from the landscape, but Sam had a relative knack for details; a trait that was of the utmost importance when dealing with terrain negotiation.

“Hmm, those must be barbaric trails. Should probably steer clear of those,” Sam thought to himself, “Remember this path could mean a lot of dead allies if you screw this up.” He always had the tendency to put pressure on himself. Though, there was no evidence to whether or not this makes him deliver better work.

Brock was scanning the local area for movement. His rifle never left the mount on his shoulder. “I hope that we get back to base soon. I’m getting the creeps out here,” he quivered.

“I am just about done here kid,” Sam replied.

Suddenly, Sam’s binoculars hit the slightly damp forest floor accompanied by a screech of pain. Neither of the two had taken note of the distant whistle that ultimately led to a bolt striking Sam in the left arm.

“Son of a…” Sam began, “That, arrghhh, is not coming out.”

“Crap, let’s go!” Brock said grabbing the zabrak by his non-injured arm and pulling him back towards camp. “Brock to base, we have come under fire. Sam’s been hit, though he’s still standing. We are heading back now. Have the eyes on us!” he said into his com-link not waiting for a response.

Day 02
Death Valley, 22.00 (Approx.)

They spent a night on the cliff peering down into the valley. It was oddly silent. After the noise of the day – the screams, the yells, the blaster shots – the silence was unnerving. There was a hush on the camp. Everyone felt the need to talk in whispers , to not raise their voice for fear of ...fear of something. Getting singled out, inciting the barbarians to attack. Something bad, that was for sure.

Wraith stayed up on night shift along with a few troopers from the Army side. By morning they were all dog tired. Not from staying up, but from not being able to calm down. Everytime they glanced into the valley, they said, they swore they could see shadows moving. Not just a few either. Hundreds of them.

Something big was going on down there, and it probably meant bad news for the Imperials.

As soon as dawn hit, Arnaut called in an airstrike on the valley, to no avail. They’d lost two pilots in the airstrike Raiders had called in and weren’t about to lose anymore. If there had been any doubts as to their objective, there were none now. The AAs were definitely still here.

They mortared the valley instead, razing trees, vaporizing dust, killing...well, not much. There weren’t even any woodland animals to kill. They mortared in silence – as silent as mortars could be – for the btter part of three hours before giving it up. There didn’t seem to be anything down there.

At noon on day three, they moved in. First Alpha Platoon, followed closely by the Corps and then the long train of Army trucks. The Army troops themselves were on edge. They didn’t fancy the idea of heading into the enemy that had terrorized them so thusfar into the mission. They’d heard what the enemy had done to the first platoons, though, for morale’s sake, they’d been separated as much as possible. Still, stories had a way of permeating through the ranks and it wasn’t long before everyone knew about each and every dead man’s name, or knew about what had happened to the scout Ficks. That seemed to crush them most of all. They looked up the scouts, however grudgingly. It’s what they aspired to become. To have one brutually maimed and tortured, even after death, broke the pristine image they had of the scouts as invinicible, undying warriors of doom and gloom. By the time the trucks rolled into Death Valley, as it would later be dubbed, morale was at an all time low.

Arnaut could feel this, hintingly, from his position in the command tank. It was the way that Marcus’ aides hung their heads, the way they let out dejected sighs every few moments. It screamed of despair. Despair didn’t win battles. Only little gold Imperial symbols next to your name on the roster, to indicate a KIA.

Arnaut expected to be attacked the entire length of the valley. The village they were after, the one believed to be concealing the AA guns, was at the far end, up quite a ways. It required them to cross through the valley, over a mile long, length-ways. Even with the forests broken and battered, they were just asking to be ambushed.

And yet, nothing happened. For a tense thirty minutes, the command tank shuddered along the bottom of the valley, following the natural stream there, without so much as a whisper of the enemy. Arnaut sat on edge for the first half of it but gave it up after a while. If he died, he was dead. That was that. He needed to save his energy now so that he could avoid that later. There was no time to worry about where the enemy could be hiding.

Even so, he let out a large sigh of relief once the command tank made it to the far end, once again under the cool shadows of the mountain’s peaks. As the tank began to rise, once again pushing up into he mountains, he was afforded a rare view of the entire convoy, front to back. It was...long. Longer than he’d expected, even though he’d seen it three times before. Just, in the valley, where it nearly stretched end to end, it somehow seemed longer.

He noticed, somewhat unsatisfactorily, that some of the troops had gotten out of their vehicles to run alongside the convoy. They should be inside, resting themselves, not outside running, jumping on the front of the cab and...

One of the middle trucks swerved sideways as the brute put a quarrel through the driver’s face. Arnaut’s blood ran cold. Crossbow fire began to pick up, just flurries of darkness from the distance, but Arnaut knew exactly what was happening. Troopers began to pour out of the vehicles, weapons up, firing at the enemy that had suddenly appeared all around them. There were tens, hundreds. Each one that fell seemed to be replaced by three more. They seemed to just pop out of the ground. The sporadic blaster fire laid down by the Army wasn’t enough to keep them back and, soon enough, two of the trucks were completely overrun with a third fighting to stay alive.

Worst of all, the only elements down there were the Army Regulars. All the specialists were up front, at the head of the convoy, completely useless.

“Turn us around!” Arnaut commanded, but the truck already was. At Sorin’s behest. Marcus’ new comm officer was trying to raise the embattled Army elements, but having no luck. Their radios were still out. Arnaut mumbled a few selective curses under his breath and thanked the stars that the short-range, Stormtrooper comlinks still worked.

Quickly, almost frantically, he began to get the Platoon turned around, facing toward the fighting. The trucks became entangled, backing into one another in their haste to turn around. Time was running out. Already the casualties on the ground below were piling up, and the waves just kept coming.

OOC:
A short (if somewhat...incoherent-ish) post to counterbalance my long, articulate last post.

Squad objectives are as thus:

Wraith: Take the mortar teams up the hill, avoiding outlying enemy patrols and rogue elements, and try to get some ehavy fire down on the forces below.

Iron Horse: Repel, repel, repel. Get down into the thick of the action and keep them off of the convoy. Rember, these guys are tough. They are uber-humans, much stronger, faster, and larger than regulars. Think wookie-sized except more awesome. Heavy weapons should be applied liberally.

Raiders: They’re coming from somewhere. Find out where and find a way to stop it, if able. If not, well, take as many as you can out and find a place to provide sniper cover on the convoy.

Remember, we’re in the thick of a battle. This should be a short, battlefield mission. That means not too many posts and such. Details on an end date are TBD.

Also, while I have my soapbox, might as well clear up some misconceptions:

Barbarians ARE human. They are extremely large humans. They are well-muscled, beyond normal human ability, and armed to the teeth (literally). Think...Germanic tribes. Celtish. Uhh...the guys from Braveheart without all the mooning the enemy stuff.

The Army Regulars are NOT stormtroopers. I saw this more in artwork than writing, but I figured a few people had confused it. This is the army. Clicky. (just look at the pictures)

More pics.

That’s all. Enjoy. As always, the discussion thread will have a copy of this AND a place to talk about the story with people...not that you've been DOING that. Pfft.

The next morning was rough, not because Rogue could not sleep because he had been able to with the use of some pills and the hours that he had been allotted to sleep simply were not enough for the pills. A look around the camp showed that almost everyone had bags under their eyes and some look like they didn’t sleep. So far desertion rates have been low, a report from the rear said that last night two army guys tried to desert and were caught and executed. While Rogue had once thought about deserting many years ago he knew in this atmosphere it would be pointless, there was simply nowhere to go.

Rogue stared at his ration bar, he wasn’t hungry but he knew he would need the energy and forced it down. Taking a sip from his canteen Rogue pondered about yesterday’s actions; the severed head, and stampede were both designed to strike fear in the Raiders and to lower its morale. The barbarians were becoming a problem, that much was certain and it needed to be addressed before the New Republic was. Reflecting back on what the squad dubbed “The Stampede” the barbarians simply ran past the squad as fast as they could go, there were perhaps fifty of them, some threw javelins while the rest ignored the squad signalling that they could be crushed at will.

The makeshift camp that Wildcard shared was quickly being torn down; bags of waste were being transported back, and tracks were being wiped in an attempt that the enemy would not see where they were. Truth was it made little difference as Rogue was positive the enemy had been watching them all along. RB saw Ron mustering the squad in a vacant area.

“Alright guys we have new objectives; we’re to locate the source of the barbarians and eliminate it.” Ron said.

There were slight gasps amongst the squad and Rogue heard someone murmur about desertion, while another murmured how it was always Raiders that got stuck with the shit jobs. Rogue simply had one question. “How are we to locate an enemy that even the Alphas can’t? I mean it’s not as if they are going to show us where their main base is.”

Ron looked proud that Rogue asked the question. “I had been given these.” He said as he pulled out a small box of ammo and a sniper rifle. “Each of these “slugthrowers” contains a small chip that transmits a signal, all we have to do is shoot one and let him get away, and then we follow the signal.”

Nodding his head in approval Rogue liked the plan, wondering if the barbarian would even feel the sting when he was shot. The idea definitely came up from someone intelligent in the army, and the weapon must’ve come in with the supply truck that carried; weapons, ammo, rations, medical equipment for those that were used, and most importantly the small tents the squads used to bunk down for the night.

Since landing on this godforsaken planet Rogue felt that the army finally might have the upper hand.

"SithSpit.. We need to go Now!" Cried Riq's voice as troopers woke up. The sound of fighting was off in the distance as Saphira came wide awake. Instantly there was a scramble as troopers woke and readied.

"Alright. We need to get down there as fast as we can. Casualties are already up for everyone. The Brutes are attacking and attacking hard. Repel as fast as you can. They shouldn't see us until we are right on top of them." Riq replied again. "Striker.. take half of them and go..I'll take the other half and we'll split into two groups and try and flank them. Just be careful."

"Yes Sir!" Came her reply as Saphira ran towards the group and took Brock, Sam, and Jelly, along with some others.

"Alright. We need to move fast. Heavy weapons should be enough to take these guys down. Just be alert and careful. Our Snipers should help, but don't count on them all the time." She replied as they hooked grapples and stood on the edge.

"Yes Ma'am!" Came about a jumble of voices. Her lek flicked with annoyance at being called that. Yet there was no time as they all started to repel downward. Each repel looses some rocks as they crumbled down to the ground below. With helmets on she kept a com open for Doc in case things went sour. They better not..
She thought as they reached the ground and released the ropes from their armor. Instantly some bags followed that carried a few heavy weaponry and her favorites... Thermal Detonators. Brock saw the bag and a few of it's contents.

"You gonna cook a few today?" he replied.

"Ya know it.. Now lets move... and here.." She tossed a couple to Brock and Sam. "Use them carefully."

They all nodded and then took off at a near run to head into the fight....

Joamer was snoring quietly inside the truck, after the long night being chased by barbarians he found the trucks oddly peaceful. Though, it could be from the scouts being assigned a different truck. Without them life was relaxing again no need to uphold a image, no snide comments or remarks going back and forth, just peace. Now Wraith sat back and enjoyed the ride, snoozing, reading, thinking dark thoughts about high command, but mostly wanting to go home.

They had had enough of this planet, Joamer did not know if the other squads felt the same, but Wraith did. They worked alone, this was not their style.

A sudden lurch in the truck caused the squad to instantly make the transition from rest to alert, they all grabbed rifles and looked around. One by one their eyes locked onto Anival, who was peering out the back of the truck. When he turned around his face was pale white, the look in his eyes was horrifying.

Off in the distance they could make out a what looked liked people running a long side the trucks. Suddenly one exploded, the concussion reached them a second later. It looked like an ants nest had just been kicked over, that one explosion brought the whole convoy to full battle alert.

Not even static came from the long range comlinks. Just silence, in odd contrast to the mayhem that was happening down below them.

"Alert command." RK said, his eyes still fixed in the scene below.

"They already know." Joamer said quietly.

The front of the convoy had begun its slow turn. The faster vehicles racing a head of the lumbering trucks.

Joamer stared straight ahead as the truck made its turned and increased speed, the driver began veering left and right, avoiding the slower trucks. It was still a slow ride though. Picking up his DLT-20a he clicked the safety off and zoomed in on the battle below, they were still out of range but not by much. Another thirty seconds and he would open fire. He felt someone come beside him, but did not look up from his scope to see who it was.

"Secure comms six-eight, Wraith Squad." The comlink buzzed.

One by one they hit keys causing their comlinks to access secure channel six-eight.

"Secure comms command." Kand said into his comm.

"Mission objectives, rendezvous with mortar teams, provide escort and cover up the hill. Avoid patrols and rogue elements, secure for mortaring of valley. When at destination open fire." The voice was not familiar, just a command assistant relaying mission objectives to various squads.

"Mortar teams, mission critical. Rendezvous, half klick north northeast." Kanderin said after he keyed a open frequency.

The driver said not a word, only turned the truck in a north north east direction and set out. Being away from the convoy allowed him to increase speed, but it also showed how bad the suspension was in this old lunker.

"Next time.." Joamer tried to say, a sudden large bump cut him off, "We tank one of the full treds!"

"Agreed." Helena said.

Everyone was bouncing around erratically, they had a death grip on anything that appeared solid. Whooping and woohooing came from the front, the driver was apparently enjoying this.

Vehicle crewmen are all psycho, Joamer thought, Every single one of them.

Havock's hands were sweaty as she held the sniper rifle Ron had given her. They were walking, scanning the forest for the barbarians. If what Rogue was telling her was right, they needed only one to wound and that one would lead us to the others. Havock had already had quite enough of these barbarians.

After everything that had happened, Hav was not able to sleep the night before. She tried, but every time her eyes closed another barbarian was in her tent grabbing her, and she would wake up and they were gone.

Havock walked up next to Ron. He glanced over at her as he walked, “Problem, Havock?”

Multiple thoughts ran through Havock's head. The sheer amount of them threated to give Hav a migraine. “I'm not good with sniper rifles. Not good with rifles, in general. Always was better with pistols. You know?”

They were a few steps away from the rest of the squad, which gave Ron the opportunity to pause and look at Havock. “Your nervous, thats normal. Just relax, your doing fine Havock.” He patted her on the shoulder lightly before continuing. “So tell me, what do you think about the new objectives?”

“I think they haven't attacked us when we're looking for them...so we need to stop looking for them. Bah, sorry.” Havock shook her head, she knew she wasn't making much since. “I mean, what if some of us hid in the trees and the rest of us acted like we were distracted, not paying attention. Then our snipers could get them when they try to get us.”

Ron looked at Hav for a few minutes then nodded. “That's not bad, I like it.” He turned towards the rest of the squad and called for Jaenna to come over. She hesitated for a second then trotted over. “Jaenna, we're going to take a break...here. I want Rogue and Grahim to cover us from the trees, tell them to take opposite positions so they can cover the area.”

With an immediate, “yes, sir.” Jae was off giving orders.

Hav smirked slightly, as she cocked her head to watch Ron walk away. She was nervous. This mission she seemed to just keep getting herself into trouble. Hav needed to focus, and eventually she really needed to sleep.

Havock walked up to a near by tree and set her sniper rifle down, leaning it against the trunk. Clicking the snaps on her helmet, she slid it off her head and let it rest next to the rifle. As she turned around she took a long drink of water, her throat was still pretty sore and water was the only thing that helped. Hav swallowed which made her grimace, then smiled as Jae walked up to her.

“Hav, are you okay?” Jae looked very concerned, as she approached the young girl.

Havock looked over at her friend and smirked. “You know you have already asked me that same question at least three times today, right?”

Jae's expression did not change. “Well if you would answer the question I wouldn't have to keep asking it.” She crossed her arms, and her body language made it clear she was not going to let this one go.

Hav let her smile drop, she looked at her feet and shuffled the dirt before making eye contact with her friend again. “I'm still breathing, and I have no desire to stop. But you want to know how I'm feeling don't you?” Jae nodded and waited for Hav to continue. “I'm tired, sore, terrified, numb, totally confused about a lot of things, and pretty sure I'm going nuts.” Havock was breathing pretty hard after her short rant, she just looked at Jae who still hadn't moved a muscle.

Hav was shocked when Jae laughed shook her head and grabbed Hav by the shoulders. “Its about time, you've been acting like a zombie ever since the stampede. You we're scaring the crap out of me, Hav.”

“Oh, heh.” Hav chewed her lip. “Sorry about that, I'll be more myself after some sleep. Don't know when I'll be able to sleep again, but yeah.”

Jae still looked concerned, but she seemed satisfied with Havock's well being...for now. “We should join the rest of the squad, come on, RB and Grahim are set.”

The trucks passage was painfully slow but made all the more worse by how visible it left the battle below. They had no choice but to sit and watch hundreds of people die below their feet, while they were safe in a truck several hundred metres away. Even though he was scared beyond belief, running away felt wrong. It was his job to help in any form, to save as many people as he could. Under normal circumstances he would of demanded Arnaut allowed him to  dive headfirst into the battle, to take a more active role. But the fear prevented the outcry, and the fear made him settle for the casual mission they were now on. It was better than being the decoy, afterall.

The truck hit a particularly large rock and Kanderin took off two or three inches into the air before landing back down on the seat. And upon his ankle, which suddenly shot pain through him. He reached down and rolled his trousers up,  cringing slightly at the dark purple colour that had engulfed it up to nearly his kneecap. It hadn't posed him much trouble since the morning, it was an eyesore but very little on their mission wasn't anymore. Suddenly however, it was back for vengeance. Every test step he took, every curve in his foot made it scream out in agony. It was the only reason he wanted the squad to stay in the truck, he was concerned he wouldn't be able to walk.

"Activity up front boss" The driver called back, slowing the driver to a crawl.

Kand sighed, before pushing up off the wall. Typical. He put as little weight on his foot as he was able to, but it held up surprisingly well. It hurt, it hurt real bad, but it didn't stop him from being able to use it. He was no stranger to pain, he could manage.

"Please say they're friendly" Kanderin asked, leaning forward over the passenger seat of the truck.

"Yeah. Tis a real shame" The man smirked, pointing towards a large rock formation coming up on the right side of the truck. Kanderin followed his finger, and found a a timid looking man in full Army uniform waving at them.

"You're fricking insane, you know that?" Kanderin shook his head before walking gingerly over to the back entrance of the truck. He waited until the driver rolled the car to a stop, before jumping out the back and around to where the man met him. He was accompanied by six other men, one of which caught his eye. He was wearing different uniform for one, the bright white uniform of the Corps that his squad wore.

"This one's a special delivery for you guys" The frail man said, obviously noting Kanderin's attention. The man stepped forward before offering out his hand.

"Private Ananzi Sir, fresh out of training and assigned to Wraith. It's an honour to be working with you"

Kand took his hand and shook it firmly. "Nice to have you onboard Private. I warn you however, you picked a hell of a mission to break your virginity on. Helena, introduce our new friend to the rest of the squad while I deal with the details"

Helena ran up to his side and nodded, before taking the mans hand and dragging him off behind the truck. He looked terrified, but he didn't blame him. Helena could be pretty intimidating if you hadn't met her before. He waited until it got a little quieter before proceeding.

"Where's the rest of you guys? I expected more than one squad" He asked.

The man grimaced, before taking a large breath. "The other squad got tired of waiting for you and left on their own. They tried to be fat headed, but if I'm honest it looked more like they just wanted to get away from the battle"

"How long ago did they leave? There's groups of those things hiding out all over the place, and you guys wont last long if you don't know what you're doing"

"About twenty minutes ago" The man responded "If we move quick we should be able to catch them up"

Kanderin nodded "Then that's exactly what we'll do. Helena!"

His ASL'd head popped around the corner.

"Change of plan, we have time for a meet and greet on the way their. Get everyone unpacked and ready to move, we leave in five minutes and we carry on on foot"

Anival was happy to have been assigned a babysitting mission, another any other circumstances, he was sure no one would want to escort anybody, but since their last mission, Anival was glad to take it easy, although he suspected it would be anything but.

“Alright, ladies, get your stuff and let go!” came Helena, suddenly.

Anival looked around, nodded at the driver, and jumped out.

“So who’s got diaper duty?” asked Anival, trying to lift up spirits.

There were chuckles,

“I say we put Joamer or Jori” replied RK.

Anival laughed, he could just imagine Joamer changing a diaper.

Anival stopped when he saw a trooper in fresh armor.

“And what do we have here?” asked Anival to no one in particular.

“This is private Ananzi” replied Helena.

The Squad nodded at him.

“Corporal Anival Velasquez”

“Senior Sergeant Joamer Restlin.”

“Senior Sergeant Ryan Karrax.”

“Sergeant Jori Lekrif.”

Anival looked around, he was hoping they would have more fresh recruits. They were needed badly, especially for the regular army, but they were lucky to have gotten just one more.

“You should have picked a better time to join Ananzi” said Anival when Helena had left to talk with Kand.

“Now you get to die here with the rest of us.” RK snickered. Someone tapped Anival on the back, he turned around, only to see Kand staring at him.

“I-I thought…..how’d you get over here so fast?” asked Anival.

“I flew” said Kand calmly, hitting Anival on the head. “Don’t scare our new recruit, has any of  us died?”

“Close to it.” muttered Anival.

“What”

“No.” stated Anival defeated

“Exactly, now let‘s get moving we want to finish this as quickly as possible.”

“Heard that!” exclaimed RK.

Anival checked the new gun he had gotten from their brief reprieve, it was salvaged from some of the dead bodies. Anival wasn’t superstitious or religious but something about holding a dead man’s gun, was sending shiver down his spine.

“Ok ready guys? Let’s move out!”

Ron slumped down wearily at a the base of a large stump of a tree, only about fifty feet or so from the rest of the group.  Havock had brought a fantastic approach to light, taking a stance of nonchalance, and Ron was glad to use it.  He was starting to feel a bit light headed, was quite sore in the knees and lower back; it had been a very long second day of this campaign.

He unslung the knapsack from his shoulders and opened it, extracting some rations from inside.  "Meatloaf." Ron sighed with pleasure, it wasn't the best meal in the world, but as Squad Leader he could afford to purchase some of the better meals.  This was (by Ron's standards) one of the army's better choices.  So Ron removed fork and spoon from the package, made sure that the heating packets were sealed- and shook the package.  Within minutes it was piping hot.

Taking a swig of cheap brandy (water tends to spoil on long campaigns), Ron dug his fork into the food, cutting away a sizable piece and offered it to himself..

He stopped suddenly.  A small red dot appeared on the bit of meat on his fork.  The dot wavered for a bit, and then slowly crawled up his fork.  Ron didn't wait for the dot to reach his hand; he immediately leaped to the other side of the stump; narrowly escaping a piercing shot from an unseen foe.  As the shot rang out, two more answered it, one from Rogueboy and the other from Grahim.  Shortly afterwards, Ron was greeted by Grahim.

"Wesa was uppin trees." he started.  "Just like yousa say, Ronnie, sah.  And then alla sudden, wesa sees thems barbarosa with gun just like wesa!"

"Woa, hold on soldier." Ron said.  "You're telling me that there are barbarians out there who are using our weapons?"

"That's whats mesa sayin'!" Grahim confirmed.

"Impossible!" Ron said, more to himself than to Grahim.  He was about to question Grahim further, when he saw Rogueboy coming towards them- dragging a large body behind him.

"Oi Ron." he said.  "We got a problem."

"So I've heard." Ron groaned.

"Me and the gungan here both had a shot at this guy, looks like only one of us hit him though.  Found this, one of our kind of snipers on him." Rogueboy said.  He handed the rifle to Ron, who inspected it thoroughly.  It wasn't a RAIDERS gun, thank goodness, but it was Imperial make.  Ron turned it over on it's other side, where his attention was directed to an imperial emblem with the letters VEA.

"I don't understand it." Rogueboy said.  "I've counted us all out, and there's no one missing... so where did they get these from?"

Ron looked up from the gun.  "Rogueboy... have we searched the entire area for signs of conflict?"

"Only about thirty yards on each side." Rogueboy replied.  "It was understood that this was only a resting point in our mission to find the location of them barbarians."

Ron nodded.  "We better spread out.  These rifles aren't RAIDERS guns, but they are of Imperial make..."

"But that would mean..." Rogueboy started.

"That some poor army bastards got wiped out." Ron said grimly.

Rogueboy motioned for Grahim and StarFruit, and the three of them spread out and searched the area.  It was dangerous, for there was no telling what was hiding out in the woods, but fortunately there were no accidents.  Soon Ron was called for over the comlink.

"Ron."  came Jaenna's voice.  "Ron... there's somethin here you gotta see... it's terrible."

Ron came as quickly as he could.  He had to walk another 300 feet directly east of where they had stopped, over a stream and up a small hill before he finally found what had given the barbarians those weapons.

Beyond the hill in the forest was a dip in the woods, which at its lowest point was about ten feet lower than the rest of the surrounding area.  In that depression were the scattered remains of a large group of Imperial Army Soldiers, all of them slaughtered mercilessly.

"Poor devils." Ron heard Karash say.

"So this..." Rogueboy started.  "This is where they got those weapons."

"Yeah." Ron replied.  "It looks like our mission just got a lot harder.  We had the advantage with the snipers, we were going to be picking off these guys one by one.  But now... now we're going to have to snipe the snipers..."

It was a hard thing to say, mostly because of the strange way that the mission had turned out to be.  Snipe the snipers.

"Right." Ron said at last.  "Everyone back to the break spot, I want Rogueboy and Grahim and any others who are good with snipers to lead our group.  From now on, we're going to have to place our trust in the fine marksmen in our squad."

They arrived at the spot, and were greeted by Raelene, Baretz, and the others.  Everyone... except one person..

"Who are we missing?" Ron said.  "Who isn't here?"

Rogueboy answered his question.  "When I came back to report to you, I left Havock to guard our position..."

Ron took off towards the tree in which Havock was in immediately.  One inexperienced sniper up against goodness knows how many barbarians... it was important to get her out of there as soon as possible.

"Damn it all." Ron said to himself.  This was the second time today that Havock was in danger of losing her life.  He just hoped that he wasn't too late.

OOC:
A bit of a twist on our lil mission.  The barbarians have the same weapons that we do; we still have the advantage of ammo and experience, but the odds are admittedly growing in their favor as time goes on.  Those of you who are good with snipes will lead the group, the rest of us will follow you and provide a rear guard.  We will then slowly follow the scattered path of the enemy snipers (takeing them out as we go) until we reach their villages.  More on that later- for now, save Havock.

Your turn in the tree, Havvy. Guard the camp while we're gone. “Fraking fantastic.” Havock muttered as she fidgeted her shoulder for the hundredth time since she climbed in nature-made deathtrap, as she had started to call it. She could swear there was something crawling on her, under the armor. It was really starting to annoy her.

Pulling the sights up to her eye, Hav scanned the surrounding area. She wasn't sure what they found that got everyone so excited, but half the squad was off looking for something. Havock pulled the rifle away and checked the safety again. She never was any good with rifles, frankly she was more likely to fall out of the tree than actually hit anything.

Turning she glanced back the way the others went. Gah, I hope they get back soon. I am really sick of being up in this fraking tree.

When she turned back, she saw something move. What it was, now that was another question. The last thing Havock needed to do was just start shooting, especially if it was nothing more than a small woodland creature. Pulling the rifle up she looked through the sight at the brush that had moved a moment before. Only to find there was nothing even remotely special about it.

Exasperated, she jerked the rifle down. Then jumped as a shot whizzed by her helmet and slammed into a branch behind her head. “Son of a bitch.” Havock jumped to another branch and fired off two shots in the direction of the brush she saw move before. Then there was silence.

The only sound was Havock's rapid breathing as she looked everywhere for the unknown shooter. Her eyes were dancing wildly around the forest floor, she swallowed and prepared to use the com. Then she saw him. A barbarian, he was running full speed from behind the brush. Tattoos covering his face and arms, he threw the sniper rifle to the ground as he approached the tree Havock was in. She pulled the gun up into firing position, an obvious action, but one none the less one that left her horribly off balance. When the barbarian slammed himself into the tree, it shook violently sending Hav sprawling to the ground. Her back hit the ground first, forcing the air out of her lungs. She coughed so violently she ripped her helmet off in a vain attempt to find more air.

She was pretty far away from the camp, far enough that they wouldn't have heard the commotion. But they may be able to hear her yell, if only she could stop coughing. Unfortunately she would never get the chance.

Hav felt the rough hand clamp down on her throat as it lift her up in the air, with no difficulty. She opened her eyes and looked at him, as she gagged under his tight grasp. The barbarian cocked his head to the side, looking at Havock the way an old woman would pick out a new pet for her granddaughter. Then he threw Havock on the ground, picking up her sniper rifle as he stepped towards her.

Shuffling her feet on the dried ground she tried to get up, but succeeded only in scooting back away from the barbarian. He shook his head sadly at the girl then slammed her in the forehead with the butt of the rifle.

The world became dark.

- - - - - - - - -

Havock was sitting on her speeder bike. She had a hydrospanner in her hand. She looked out the main entrance of the hanger on Tadath, to a brilliant and sunny day. Hav looked down at her hand holding the hydrospanner then to the control panel of the speeder bike. She had no clue what she was supposed to be doing.

When she looked up again, Jae was standing next to her. “Hey Hav.”

Havock was totally confused, she blinked as she looked at Jae. “I...this isn't right. I'm not supposed to be here.”

Jae nodded, sadly. She put one hand on the handle of the bike and the other on Hav's shoulder. “I know, hun. That's why you need to wake up.”

Hav kept blinking, then turned her head to look behind her. She could see the forest burning in the distance.

Havock took a deep breath then looked back at Jae. “I don't think I want to.”

Jae grabbed Hav and shook her. “Wake up, Havock.” Drums. Sounded like drums, off in the distance. What is that?

“Damn it, Hav. Wake...UP!”

- - - - - - -

“Gah!” Havock coughed and spit, she could only taste blood. Her head hurt like hell, she could barely open her eyes. Once the coughing ceased, Hav looked around. She was tied up with some kind of rope. Her legs were bound together and her arms were tied behind some kind of support poll for the structure she was in. The walls looked like mud and the roof seemed to be made of dried grass. She was alone for the moment, but could hear voices outside in some dialect she couldn't understand.

She could see her trooper uniform piled up in a corner, which left her in a black shirt and shorts.

Havock rolled her head against the poll. Her thoughts were jumbled, she felt like they stuck her head in a blender.

Then she saw them walking by the entrance to the hovel they had put her in, so far nobody had noticed the fact that she had regained consciousness. She decided it was for the best, she was in no shape to deal with them right now.

All she could do now was stay conscious and wait for the RAIDERS to rescue her.

After the brief introductions to the rest of the squad, Ananzi was eager to get to the task at hand.  He always believed actions spoke louder than words, and felt a good performance would put his squad-mates at ease about his abilities.  Realizing the rest of the squad had been in heavy action for days with little or no rest, he knew he would have to step up.

"Okay,Wraith Squad, pair up and let's get moving up this hill"  Kanderin said.  The mortar team was in the center, with the squad members separated around them.  These soldiers looked exhausted and had a glazed, vacant look in their eyes.  Clearly, they were scared out of their wits.

Ananzi was paired up with Anival, and the two of them were the rear guard for the squad.  The hill sloped upward gradually, small scrub trees were the only real feature of the landscape.  Aside from the chattering of birds, the area had a sort of oppressive, eerie silence.

"Hell of a time to join the squad, this mission has gone completely pair shaped" remarked Anival.

"Looks that way, but in this kinda situation the only thing you can do is shit in yer pants an' dive in and swim!"  Anival chuckled, but then gave the hand signal for quiet.

At the front of the column, Joamer had spotted something.  Kanderin held up a fist, signaling the column to stop.  There was a rustling in the brush further up the hill, and then suddenly blaster fire broke the silence.  Ananzi finally got a look at one of the hostiles.  The barbarian was probably one of the tallest men he had ever seen, and definitely one of the dirtiest.  His face was painted in blue and white, and he had long brown dreadlocks and a necklace of what looked like human teeth around his neck.  He was firing on the column from a crouched position.  The squad members closest to them returned fire.  The barbarian was holding the rifle in an awkward way which seemed to suggest he wasn’t exactly an expert marksman.  He did however manage to hit one of the mortar team soldiers, who slumped over on the ground.  A blaster shot hit the ground near Joamer, who rolled out of the way and landed a shot to the barbarians shoulder.  He staggered backward, nearly dropping the blaster rifle.  Before he could fire again, Kanderin nailed him in the head.  Helena matched his shot, sending the man to the ground, a smoking hole bored through his head.

Another barbarian popped up out of the brush on the squad’s left flank and began firing.  At the same time, another one advanced on the rear guard.  This looked like a small patrol or scouts. Anival fired, hitting him in the chest, but he continued to advance.  Ananzi fired but missed, and the barbarian was close enough to leap forward and grab onto him.  The other members of the squad were trying to fire on the hostile, but the two were too close together.

The barbarian, who was easily 7 feet tall and outweighed Ananzi considerably, tried to swing a stone headed axe.  He blocked the swing with his forearm shield plate and punched the man in the nose as hard as he could.  This hardly seemed to faze the barbarian at all, and he landed an elbow stunning Ananzi. His vision cleared just in time to see the head of the axe swinging down at his face and the barbarian’s crazed expression.  He grabbed a thermal detonator from his belt, triggered it, and stuffed it into the hostile’s belt.  Kicking with all his might, he sent the barbarian back into the brush.  The detonator exploded in a brief but intense flash, vaporizing the enemy.

“You all right, man?”  asked Anival.

“Yeah, I’m fine.  That was too close though” replied Ananzi.  Sweat was burning his eyes inside his helmet and he had to concentrate to slow his breathing.

At the front of the column, the other squad members were examining the corpses of the other two barbarians.  RK and Jori were examining the body of the other barbarian they had taken out.  Like the other squads, they had discovered the barbarians now had Imperial weapons.

“ We need to keep moving. It is critical we get these mortar teams up hill and give the other units support.  These guys might have Imperial weapons, but they don’t have your training or experience.  Now let’s get moving Wraith squad.” said Kanderin.

The column re-organized itself and continued up the hill, leaving two of the mortar team who had been killed in the fighting behind.  There was no joking around now, and everyone moved more carefully, their eyes trained for further attacks.

"How high is this mountain?" Joamer shouted back.

"Not that high really" Kand smiled back. "Why? Altitude getting to you?"

"No!" Joamer shouted back. "Just fed up, that's all!"

He spun back around and visibly sped up. Kand smiled and glanced sideways at RK, who was chuckling to himself. "He's tired"

The three squads continued single file up the hill for the next half an hour or so, the Wraiths covering the flanks of the two mortar squads. It was clear that they were uncomfortable being in the middle of a battlefield, although they like Joamer were unwilling to show it. Mortar squads were typically cowardly, the range of their weapons allowing them to be no closer than a mile from the action, meaning they very rarely saw the colour of their enemies eyes. Here, on a mountain a stones throw away from a battle they were rapidly losing, you could see how many dilated veins there were in each one of their eyes. Twelve normally, but he'd seen as little as eight a few times.

He was still wondering when exactly he had counted when they hit the first level ground they'd encountered for a long time. It carried on for about a hundred feet before the mountain began once again, more than enough space for the mortar teams to set up.

"You guys happy with this?"

The Mortar Leader shook his head,  clambering on top of a rock to look over the space properly. "Not at the moment no"

"What's wrong with it?" Helena sighed.

The man pointed, and Kanderin clambered up onto the rock alongside him to check. There was a large cave opening, stretching about half the width of the plain and reaching for quite a ways in. in front of it was the ashes of some sort of campfire, the discarded meat of a dead animal still lay around it. Sunlight bounced off two or three metal objects lying on the ground that Kanderin recognised instantly - Crossbow bolts.

"We don't have any more time to waste looking for a better spot" Joamer snarled, looking as if he was about to beat the nearest man with his own mortar.

"Well we cant risk getting jumped on while reloading!" The man spat back with equal venom.

"You're both right" Kanderin responded "You guys set up and do your thing, I'll take the Wraiths into the cave and we'll clear out"

"You cant be serious Kand...Look how much difficulty we had taking just one of them down! And you want to take us into a hive of the things?"

"I don't expect to see that many of them, the focus would be on the battle. But yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Now move"

The squad exchanged nervous looks, then readied their weapons.  They were all hoping there wouldn't be any more than a small patrol.  The mortar team leader began directing his troops to set up their equipment, his eyes darting around the cave and the surrounding areas.

“If we have to fight these guys in close quarters again, I’m not sure we will get the better of it” said Anival.

“We’ll clear out the cave with explosives, then sweep up anything that’s left over” replied Kand.

Ananzi assembled his M13 semi-automatic shotgun from his pack and loaded it.  It was the best weapon he had for close encounters.  The squad took positions around the opening of the cave while RK tossed a fire grenade inside.  The grenade lit up the cave and there was a horrible moaning, howling sound.  Joamer and Helena exchanged glances and sniggered.  A blur of flame burst out of the opening of the cave.  The barbarian was waving his arms wildly, which were on fire, and screaming at the top of his lungs.  His long hair was aflame and he charged forward towards Ananzi.  He leveled his shotgun, but was pushed back and the shot went off into the sky harmlessly.  The barbarian was hit with several blaster shots that seemed to stun him momentarily, but he kept moving.  He had a crazed look in his eyes and seemed to be in some kind of berserker rage.

The mortar team stopped shelling and moved back from their equipment.  The crazed, flaming barbarian was knocked to the ground by two simultaneous blasted hits to the head.  His head was smoking, and his left leg was still twitching.

“Is he dead?” asked Helena, her rifle still trained on the smoldering body.

“These are some tough cavemen” said Jori, while moving over to the body.  He put two more shots in what was left of the head to make sure.

“There are probably traps in there, so look alive” said Kanderin, looking at each of the squad members in turn.

Joamer took point and moved into the cave slowly.  The squad shuffled forward behind him, scanning the darkness for further attackers.  He stopped, pointing to the ground where a thin string had been stretched across the cave.

“Kinda clever too, aren’t they?” said Joamer, bending down to get a better look at the trip wire.

A barbarian jumped out of the darkness, tackling Joamer to the ground.  He had a curved blade and was moving to draw it out of the scabbard at his waist.  With his other hand, he had pinned Joamer’s arm to the ground.  The rest of the squad was trying to get a clear shot, but the two of them were just too close together.  Joamer hit away the man’s sword and it clattered to the cave floor.  Using his uncanny strength, the barbarian now pinned Joamer’s other arm and gave him a savage head butt.  Joamer remembered one trick he had left up his sleeve.  He began to extend his cybernetic arms, the sound of the servo motors seemed to confuse the barbarian.  The look on his face was priceless as Joamer flung him towards the cave wall.  The rest of the squad opened fire, and he was hit by multiple rounds at once.

The squad moved through the cave, satisfied that it was clear.  They moved back out into the clearing.  The mortar team moved back to their equipment warily.  One of them was standing over the burnt body of the barbarian, his eyes as big as saucers.  Everyone seemed to breath a sigh of relief, but in the distance there was a repetitive, rhythmic sound.

“Is that drums?’ asked Ananzi.  A line of what looked like torches was coming up the other side of the hill.
